Allianz Travel Insurance

The plan you have already been offered — at an airline checkout, a cruise booking page, a membership club. Its evacuation limit is among the best in this series. Its top-plan medical limit is the smallest in it. Both of those are worth knowing before the box is ticked for you.

The 30-second answer

Allianz is among the best-known names in travel insurance and its emergency transportation cover is outstanding — up to $1,000,000 on OneTrip Premier. But its highest medical limit, $75,000, is significantly lower than several competitors. For domestic and Caribbean cruises that is usually enough. For longer international sailings it is worth comparing against carriers offering $250,000 to $500,000 of medical cover.

Who is actually behind it

Two companies, and which one you get depends on where you live. Jefferson Insurance Company is rated A+ (Superior). BCS Insurance Company is rated A (Excellent). Your state and your plan decide which underwrites you.

Allianz publishes that distinction plainly. It even adds that those grades are the second and third highest of AM Best's thirteen — more precise disclosure than most of this market bothers with. Credit where it is due.

The selling entity is separate again. AGA Service Company is the licensed producer and administrator, and an affiliate of Jefferson. Allianz discloses that affiliation, and notes it brings you no special advantage.

One caution about ratings generally, and it is the recurring lesson of this whole cluster. At least one distributor page still lists both underwriters a full grade below where they now sit. Read the rating at AM Best, and read the underwriter named on your own certificate — the two companies here do not carry the same grade.

Three single-trip plans

Basic, Prime, Premier. Step through and read the two columns against each other. The transportation figure climbs to a million. The medical figure does not climb nearly as far.

OneTrip BasicThe budget plan

Evacuation

What to know

Departure-delay benefits start after six hours and baggage delay after twelve. Note the evacuation wording: this is transport to the nearest adequate facility, not a hospital of your choosing.

Evacuation

What to know

Allianz calls this its most popular choice and designs it for trips up to 180 days. It is also the cheapest tier carrying the free child cover — see the family row in the scorecard for the conditions.

OneTrip PremierThe top of the single-trip range
Emergency medical

Up to $75,000 emergency medical and dental ($750 dental)

Evacuation

Up to $1,000,000 emergency medical transportation

What to know

Allianz says Premier doubles most of Prime's post-departure benefits and suits trips up to 366 days. It is also where the shape of this carrier becomes clear: an evacuation limit among the best in this series sitting on top of the smallest top-tier medical limit in it.

Premier is the plan to want here. Allianz argues for it in its own words: the more remote your destination, the more emergency transportation costs.

Sound advice. It is also worth reading closely for what it emphasises. Getting you to care is covered to a million dollars — and if you are not sure what an emergency evacuation benefit actually pays for, the pillar guide breaks it down. Paying for that care tops out a good deal lower.

Which only means something in comparison. So here is the comparison.

03

Where that medical limit sits

Every carrier reviewed on this site, ranked by the emergency medical limit on its top single-trip plan. Same measure, same question, eight companies.

Seven Corners$500,000Trip Protection Choice, primary
IMG$500,000iTravelInsured Travel LX
Travel Insured International$500,000Worldwide Trip Protector Platinum, primary
Travelex$250,000Ultimate, with an optional $250,000 upgrade
WorldTrips$250,000Atlas Journey Elevate, primary
Faye$250,000One plan, fixed
Berkshire Hathaway$100,000–$150,000LuxuryCare — their own pages disagree
Allianz$75,000OneTrip Premier, their top single-trip plan

Allianz is the largest name on that list and the smallest number on it. The three above it — Seven Corners, IMG and Travel Insured International — all reach $500,000 on their flagship plans.

That is not a scandal, and not a reason to dismiss the company. A $75,000 ceiling is a real cushion. On a domestic trip, or a Caribbean week where you could be flown home quickly, it will very likely never be tested.

It matters on the other kind of trip. A cardiac event or a stroke in a foreign port can mean days of intensive care before you are stable enough to move. Those days are billed at rates that make $75,000 look closer than it sounds. Six carriers on this page reach $250,000 or more.

So the question is not whether Allianz is good. It is whether your itinerary is the kind that tests the ceiling.

04

Scored on the eight that vary

The same eight dimensions every policy on this site is measured against. Compare carriers on anything else and you are comparing brochures. Scored across the range, because here the range is the product.

How these scores work

Each score is Seabound's judgement, not a figure published by any insurer. The underlying limits are researched from the carrier's own materials and stated as they appear there. The score answers one question: how well does this dimension serve someone booking a cruise? Ten means best-in-class for cruising. Five means adequate. Below five means a gap worth planning around. Where a benefit exists but only on one plan in a range, the score is marked down, because a benefit you cannot buy at your price point is not a benefit you have. Limits vary by state and the certificate you are issued is what governs.

Emergency medical limit4/10

The lowest mark on this page and the lowest top-tier medical figure in this series. Up to $75,000 on OneTrip Premier, where six other carriers here reach $250,000 or more on their flagship plans. For a domestic trip that is ample. For an international sailing, where a serious hospital admission can run past it, the ceiling is the thing to weigh.

Evacuation limit10/10

Up to $1,000,000 emergency medical transportation on Premier — four times the figure commonly cited as a sensible minimum, and level with the strongest in this series. Allianz makes the argument itself: the more remote your destination, the more this benefit matters.

Cancel for any reason7/10

Allianz sells Cancel Anytime rather than a conventional cancel-for-any-reason benefit. It reimburses up to 80% — higher than the 75% most of this market offers — for almost any unforeseeable reason the plan does not already cover. Two caveats keep it off a higher score: it is not offered in all states, and it is a different product from standard CFAR, so compare the wording rather than the percentage.

Family value9/10

Children 17 and under travel free with a parent or grandparent on Prime and Premier. Including grandparents is genuinely uncommon, and on a multi-generational cruise it can be the biggest saving available. Two conditions: published sources differ on whether it covers one child or several, and Allianz excludes policies issued to Pennsylvania residents.

Pre-existing condition waiver6/10

Available, gated at 14 days from the initial trip deposit. That is the tighter end of this market, where much of it allows 21 — and it is the fourth carrier in this series to use a fortnight.

Underwriter financial strength8/10

Two underwriters, and which one you get depends on your state and plan. Jefferson Insurance Company is A+ (Superior); BCS Insurance Company is A (Excellent). Both are strong, and Allianz spells the difference out on its own site rather than rounding it off — more precise disclosure than most of this market bothers with.

Range and availability9/10

Ten single- and multi-trip plans, plus annual policies, a rental-car product and a business-traveller plan. If your travel does not fit a standard single-trip shape, this is the widest shelf in the series.

Cruise-specific benefits7/10

Missed cruise or tour connection cover is a named benefit on Prime and above, and an epidemic endorsement adds covered reasons for cancellation, delay and medical care. There is no dedicated cruise plan, and the evacuation wording on the entry tier points to the nearest adequate facility rather than one you pick.

Limits verified July 2026 and stated as up to figures. Allianz states that benefits and coverage vary by state and that sublimits may apply, that free child cover is not available on policies issued to Pennsylvania residents, and that Cancel Anytime is not offered everywhere. Which of its two underwriters carries your plan also depends on your state. The plan document issued to you is what governs.

05

Who it suits, and who should skip it

Two dimensions score at the top of this series and one scores at the bottom. That spread makes Allianz harder to summarise than most carriers here.

Multi-generational cruises are where Allianz wins outright. Children 17 and under travel free with a parent or a grandparent, on Prime and Premier. Almost nothing else in this market extends that to grandparents, and on a family sailing it can be the largest single saving available. Pennsylvania is the one state Allianz carves out — one of several cases where benefits vary by state.

The evacuation cover is genuinely first-rate. A million dollars of emergency transportation on Premier matches the strongest here, and it is the benefit that turns a catastrophe in a remote port into a logistics problem rather than a financial one.

The medical ceiling is the reason to think twice. $75,000 on the top plan, where six other carriers on this site reach $250,000 or more. On a domestic trip that is ample. On a long international itinerary it is the smallest cushion in the series, and it is worth checking your own itinerary against it rather than against the brand name.

Read Cancel Anytime as its own product. Eighty per cent beats the seventy-five most of this market offers, and that is a real advantage. It is also not standard cancel-for-any-reason, and it is not sold in every state — so compare the wording rather than the headline percentage. Our third-party guide sets out the eight dimensions worth comparing on.

And know why you were offered it. Allianz discloses that it compensates suppliers and agencies for the right to put its plan in front of their customers. That is ordinary commerce, openly stated. It is also the reason this is the plan you meet at checkout, and not evidence that anyone matched it to your trip. The companies page explains how that shapes the rankings you read elsewhere.

06

Straight answers

Why is Allianz the plan I keep getting offered at checkout?

Because Allianz pays for that position, and says so. Its own disclosure reads that AGA compensates their suppliers or agencies for allowing AGA to market or offer products to customers of the supplier or agency — meaning the airline, cruise line or membership club is compensated for putting that box in front of you. That is a normal commercial arrangement and it is disclosed. It is simply not the same thing as the plan having been chosen for your trip.

Is $75,000 of medical cover enough for a cruise?

It depends entirely on where you are sailing. For a domestic or Caribbean trip where you could be flown home quickly, $75,000 is a real cushion. For a longer international itinerary — where a stroke or a cardiac event can mean days of intensive care in a foreign hospital before you are stable enough to move — it is the smallest top-tier ceiling in this series by a distance. Six other carriers here reach $250,000 or more. Weigh it against your itinerary rather than against the brand.

Who actually underwrites an Allianz travel policy?

One of two companies, depending on your state of residence and the plan you buy: Jefferson Insurance Company, rated A+ (Superior), or BCS Insurance Company, rated A (Excellent). AGA Service Company is the licensed producer and administrator, and is an affiliate of Jefferson — which Allianz discloses, along with a note that being insured brings no special advantage from that affiliation. Check the underwriter named on your own certificate; at least one distributor page still lists both companies a grade below their current ratings.

Is Cancel Anytime the same as cancel-for-any-reason?

Not quite, and the difference is worth reading. Cancel Anytime reimburses up to 80% of unused, prepaid, non-refundable costs — more than the 75% standard elsewhere — for almost any unforeseeable reason your plan does not already cover. Standard CFAR typically asks no reason at all. The wording matters more than the percentage, and Cancel Anytime is not offered in every state.

What is the deal with free coverage for children?

It applies on OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier, and the detail that matters is who can be the accompanying adult: a parent or a grandparent. Most of this market stops at parents. Check two things before counting on it — whether your quote covers one child or several, since published sources differ, and whether you live in Pennsylvania, where Allianz excludes the benefit.

Which Allianz plan works for a cruise?

OneTrip Premier, if you are staying with Allianz — it carries the $1,000,000 transportation limit and the higher medical ceiling, and Allianz itself argues for it on remote itineraries. Prime is the sensible middle for a mainstream sailing with children in tow. Basic is a domestic-trip product; its evacuation wording points to the nearest adequate facility, which on a Caribbean itinerary is rarely the hospital you would choose.
