Apia in brief
Apia is Samoa’s capital, a harbor town on the island of Upolu, and the ship day here splits cleanly in two — town on foot, the island by road.
You usually dock, not tender.
Ships come alongside at Matautu, which Cruise Critic describes as a working container port that has had a wharf extension and navigation upgrades.
Don’t expect a terminal building — passenger facilities are temporary marquees on the dock, with toilets about 200 yards (180 m) from the berth near a small retail center.
Celebrity notes a tourist information point with maps at the wharf, and Cruise Critic says shuttles to the Visitor Information Centre are often laid on — often, not always, so check the daily program.
Town is a flat walk.
It’s about a mile (1.6 km) on flat pavement to the main shopping area, by Cruise Critic’s count, and Samoa Tourism puts it at about 20 minutes on foot or five by taxi.
The Information Fale is on Beach Road by the harbor, and the Samoa Cultural Village is next door.
Sunday is the day that rearranges things.
Most businesses close on Sundays, Cruise Critic says, and Holland America and Seabourn both note that their Apia highlights tour doesn’t run that day. Celebrity lists the Papaseea Sliding Rocks as open Monday through Saturday.
The fish market goes the other way. Samoa Tourism says Sunday brings its widest range of seafood — an early alarm, not a lost day.
Which tours earn their fare, and which just drive you around the harbor, is the job of our Apia shore excursion guide — read it before you book a seat on a coach.
On foot from Matautu Wharf
A working container port with marquees for passengers, so you walk down a gangway — no tender queue.
About a mile (1.6 km), and flat the whole way. The sun, not the distance, is what slows people down.
Samoa Tourism’s fale sits by the harbor and books tours; the Cultural Village is next door.
Samoa Tourism says go before 9am for the catch. On Sunday the range is widest, cooked fish and chips included.
The main market, by the Apia bus station. Siapo, carvings and lava-lavas, plus umu food from about 11:30am.
A short walk from town by Samoa Tourism’s count. Snorkel it near high tide, and use the basic showers after.
What's nearby, broadly
The first eight are in or just outside town, and the Museum of Samoa, which takes donations instead of a ticket, is about a five-minute drive.
Vailima and the Mt Vaea trail to Stevenson’s grave are about 5 km from town. Papaseea is roughly 15 minutes by road, Piula’s cave pool about 45, and To Sua is on the south coast near Lotofaga — that last one is a day trip, not a quick hop.

Planning your Apia day
Tours, do-it-yourself plans and the trips to pass on have their own guide, so this page sticks to the wharf, the cash and the calendar.
If you’re booking with a third party, our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator explains which suits which kind of port day — and when the ship’s own tour is the safer buy.

Tala, and carry cash.
Samoa uses the tala, split into 100 sene. Celebrity warns that cards are unreliable outside town, so take cash for markets, taxis and the swimming-hole fees.
Celebrity also suggests hitting an Apia ATM early in the day, before the notes you want run short. Tipping isn’t customary, though about 10% is appreciated at upscale restaurants — a thank-you, not an obligation.
Taxis: agree the fare first.
No published taxi fare table turned up in our checks.
Cruise Critic says cars are in high demand on ship days and fares should be settled before you get in. Celebrity notes one driver can cover several stops — useful when you want Vailima and Papaseea in one go.
The calendar matters more than the clock.
On a Sunday call, expect closed shops, no Papaseea and fewer tour options. The fish market is the exception worth getting up for.
Entry paperwork.
Samoa Tourism says all visitors on board need a passport valid at least six months beyond the intended stay. For visa rules, check your cruise line’s documents notes — the State Department’s Samoa page wouldn’t load for us.
The U.S. advisory is Level 1.
The U.S. Embassy in Apia shows Samoa at Level 1, exercise normal caution, and calls it generally safe for travelers. The embassy page carries no issue date, so look again before you sail.
Respect the village rules.
Dress modestly, ask before photographing people, and expect a small fee at natural sites — Samoa Tourism says swimming at them needs permission and payment.
Petty theft exists here.
Cruise Critic flags bag-snatching. Leave the good phone in a zipped pocket at the market.

Yes. It’s about 20 minutes, roughly a mile on flat pavement, and shuttles to the Visitor Information Centre are often provided — check your daily program.
How far is the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum from the port?
Samoa Tourism puts Vailima about 5 km from Apia, so take a taxi. Celebrity describes a 45-minute guided tour of the house, and a hiking trail climbs Mt Vaea to the grave.
How do I get to To Sua Ocean Trench?
By road to the south coast — it’s on the Main South Coast Road near Lotofaga. Local operators sell it as a full day from the wharf, about 6 to 6.5 hours with entry fees included.
Is Apia open on Sundays?
Much of it isn’t.
Cruise Critic says most businesses close, and Papaseea is listed as Monday to Saturday. The fish market has its widest seafood range on Sunday, by Samoa Tourism’s account.
What currency does Samoa use?
The tala. Carry cash for markets, taxis and site fees, since cards are unreliable outside town.

We found no published fare table. Agree the price before you ride, and ask for one driver to cover several stops if you’re doing a loop.
Do US citizens need a visa for Samoa?
We couldn’t load the State Department’s Samoa page, which carries the visa rules, so check it and your line’s documents notes before you sail. Samoa Tourism says passports need at least six months’ validity beyond the stay.
