Belize City in brief
The first thing to get right in Belize is arithmetic, not geography.
This is a tender port. The water inshore is too shallow for a ship — local boats run you in to Fort Street Tourism Village.
The Belize Port Authority's own facilities page places the Village at the mouth of Haulover Creek, which puts your landing at roughly 17.4986 north, 88.1886 west.
How far out the ship sits is a number nobody official publishes.
Four independent port guides put it at about two miles, or 3.2 kilometres, and all four give the same reason — shallow water.
That is a real consensus, not a published figure — and this page treats it as exactly that.
The duration is better sourced. The Belize Tourism Board's own cruise page calls Fort Street "a tender port– approximately 15 minutes ship to shore."
Independent guides run longer. cruisemapper and adventourbegins say 15 to 20 minutes each way, cruisealert says about 20, iqcruising says around 20, and cruiseportadvisor calls it "about a 20-minute, often choppy, ride."
Our own Caribbean hub tags this port "Tender · long ride," and we are going to disagree with ourselves in public.
Fifteen to twenty minutes over two miles is an ordinary Caribbean tender, not a long one. Grand Cayman's is four to ten; St. Thomas and St. Maarten have piers.
What is long here is the chain, not the ride. The ride is fine — genuinely.
You queue to board a tender in the morning. You cross for 15 to 20 minutes. You cross back for 15 to 20 minutes. And cruisealert says the return queue at Fort Street can run 30 minutes or longer when several ships are in.
Add those up and the water costs you something close to an hour and a half of a port day before a single wheel has turned on a road. That is the fact people underestimate, and the hub entry is pointing at it from slightly the wrong angle.
cruisealert's own advice is to budget a minimum of 45 to 60 minutes before your ship's last tender time. That is a guide's number rather than the port's — and we would not shave it.
The landing itself is a gated complex, and the gate is the important part.
cruisealert gives the Fort Street Tourism Village Tender Pier at 8 Fort Street with four tender docking points and a secured perimeter. adventourbegins names four terminal areas — REEF, JAGUAR, MAYA and PIRATE — and tells you to remember which one you came in through.
On a multi-ship day that is not trivia. It is how you find the boat back — nothing else.
Inside the fence is the Tourism Board's open-air mini-mall: courtyards, snack bars, duty-free, restaurants and the tour meeting points.
Outside it, the core is small. cruisealert puts the Swing Bridge about 600 metres from the gate, roughly a ten-minute walk, and cruisemapper says about 0.6 kilometres.
The Belize Marine Terminal, where water taxis leave for Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, is a short walk along the waterfront — 111 North Front Street, on our Belize shore excursion guide's reading.
The advisory draws a line through this city, and it is worth knowing exactly where.
The State Department has Belize at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, issued March 12, 2026, and carves out one area by name: reconsider travel to Southside Belize City due to crime.
The advisory draws the boundary itself, and you can quote it at a driver: reconsider travel to Southside Belize City from the Haulover Creek Canal to Fabers Road. It adds that US government employees are strongly discouraged from going there.
That is a geographic instruction, not a general one — the advisory does not caution against the city as a whole. Know where the line is, stay north of it, and treat the colonial centre as the normal half-day that the lines' own four-hour coach tours say it is.
Now the part that actually decides your day.
Belize's headline excursions are inland, and they are far. Carnival publishes about 75 minutes each way to cave tubing at Caves Branch, and about two hours each way to Xunantunich or Lamanai.
Put a seven-hour tour on two tender crossings and a nine-hour call, and you have spent the day getting there, not being there — a clock problem, not a quality one.
That is why this is the one Western Caribbean port where we lean toward the ship's version more often than not. The coach meets the tender and the ship waits for its own tour — you are buying the clock, not the guide.
One correction before you book. Harvest Caye is not this port — not the same place, not the same day.
It is a separate Belize facility with an actual docking berth, serving Norwegian Cruise Line, in the Stann Creek District. The Port Authority lists it among eight separate port facilities. None of this page applies there.
Which inland trip is worth the drive, and which one you should refuse outright, is the job of our Belize shore excursion guide.
On foot from the ship
The Belize Tourism Board's own page says approximately 15 minutes ship to shore. cruisealert, iqcruising and cruiseportadvisor all say about 20, the last of them adding "often choppy." You pay it twice.
No official source publishes the distance. cruisehive, iqcruising, cruisealert and profmelissa independently put it at about two miles, or 3.2 km, and all four give shallow water as the reason. Four guides agreeing is not a published figure, and we are not treating it as one.
cruisealert puts the Swing Bridge about 600 metres and roughly ten minutes from the Tourism Village gate; cruisemapper says about 0.6 km. That is most of the walkable tourist core, and the Haulover Creek line the advisory names runs right there.
The water-taxi terminal for Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye sits a short walk along the waterfront, at 111 North Front Street, on our Belize guide's reading. Its operator publishes the timetable as an image that will not render, so confirm departures before you build a day on one.
cruisealert's own figure, and on a multi-ship day it says the return queue alone can run 30 minutes or longer. It is a guide's number rather than the port's — nobody official publishes a buffer here.
Carnival's own listings put cave tubing at Caves Branch about 75 minutes each way and Xunantunich or Lamanai at about two hours each way. Altun Ha is the close one at 31 miles. None of that starts until you are off the tender.
What's nearby, broadly
The first six of those sit inside a short walk of the gate, and everything after them is a road or a boat and a serious piece of your day. That split is the whole port. Belize City gives you a small, walkable colonial core and then asks you to choose between it and a country that starts an hour inland — and the honest answer for most callers is to pick one, not both.
Commonly reached from
Royal Caribbean and Carnival are the regular callers here, with Princess and Margaritaville at Sea seasonal, per our Caribbean cruise guide. Western Caribbean loops carrying Belize very often also call at Cozumel and Roatán, which is worth checking before you book three water days in a row. Norwegian's Belize call is Harvest Caye instead, a different facility with a berth. The ranked tour decision for this port lives in our Belize shore excursion guide.
Planning your Belize City day
The specific picks — which paid excursion is actually worth it, what to skip, and why — already have their own dedicated guide, built and kept current on its own schedule. This page stays at the port-identity level on purpose; that one goes deep.
Booking a tour yourself? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator covers which of the two suits which kind of port day — and when the ship’s own tour is still the better buy.
Best Belize City shore excursions
Belize City still tenders, and everything good is 75 minutes to two hours inland. Durations, transfer times and the arithmetic that picks your day.

The money trap here is the peg, and it catches people every single call.
The Belize dollar is fixed at BZ$2.00 to US$1.00, a peg the Central Bank of Belize says was adopted on 11 May 1976.
The same bank fixed the buying rate for all United States monetary instruments at BZ$2.00 to US$1.00 with effect from 1 June 2023.
So every price you are quoted is either half or double what you think — depending on which dollar the seller means.
Ask which dollars, out loud. Do it before you agree — not after.
A BZ$60 tour and a US$60 tour are not the same tour, and the gap is the peg rather than the seller.
Entry is straightforward, and the State Department spells it out.
US citizens need a passport valid for the length of stay and at least one blank page — and no visa at all for 30 days or less.
Our Caribbean hub says the same thing in one line: visa-free for US citizens up to 30 days.
As a cruise caller you are cleared through the ship, so carry what your line asks for and keep the passport aboard if that is what it tells you.
The advisory is Level 2, and the useful part of it is geographic.
It was issued March 12, 2026, for crime, and it carves out Southside Belize City by name — reconsider travel there.
The line itself is on the advisory, in its own words — Southside Belize City from the Haulover Creek Canal to Fabers Road. US government employees are strongly discouraged from travelling into it.
The advisory also says gangs drive most of the violent crime — with isolated incidents even during the day and in tourist areas.
Set against that, the lines sell the colonial centre as a rated-Easy four-hour coach product. Both things are true, and the boundary is what reconciles them.
Stay north of the creek, keep valuables out of sight, and do not wander past the tourist core alone. That is ordinary city advice — not a special Belize rule.
On the water, the advisory is blunt enough that we are quoting it rather than paraphrasing.
Boats may lack life jackets, radios and tools to make repairs.
It asks you to make sure your operator carries safety equipment and accident insurance, and to select a reputable and certified operator for water activities.
Pair that with the Tourism Board's licensing rule and you have something concrete to do at the pier. Every guide and operator must carry a valid licence and photo ID — ask to see it.
A licensed operator will not mind.
An unlicensed one will. That is the test.
Getting around, and why you probably will not.
Taxis carry green licence plates, and some have roof ornaments or TAXI on the doors. That rests on our Belize guide's secondary sourcing rather than a government page — treat it as a strong indicator, not a legal test.
Very few taxis use meters. Agree the fare, and name the currency — before you get in.
City rides run roughly BZ$6 to BZ$14, about US$3 to US$7, on that same secondary sourcing; cruisealert says standard fares to the city centre run about US$10. Both are reported figures, not a tariff.
There is no metropolitan bus system in Belize City, though intercity buses are extensive. Car rental runs roughly BZ$120 to BZ$240 a day with insurance, and most agencies sit at the international airport — which is a round trip before your day starts.
We could not confirm whether ride-hail operates here — so we are not telling you either way.
The berth that is coming, and what we could and could not check.
Our own excursion guide reports the long-running Stake Bank project relaunched as Olo Caye in April 2026 under new leadership — pre-construction rather than operating, with island completion targeted for early 2028 and a two-pier design.
We could not re-verify any of that on September 21, 2026. The project's own site was disallowed by its robots file, one Belizean broadcaster's site failed TLS verification on an expired certificate, and searches of three other Belizean outlets returned nothing under the name.
We do not route around a blocked fetch, so that stays carried from our own guide rather than freshly confirmed. The operative conclusion is unchanged: plan on tendering through 2027.
Season, water and health.
Carnival's own listings say mosquitoes are common from June to November, with rain possible in both seasons. That is the only officially sourced seasonality anybody could find for this port.
The State Department says that in many areas tap water is not safe to drink — many, not all, and it does not say which.
Buy sealed bottled water. Check the seal.
We found no official sargassum reporting for Belize, so there is nothing about it here we would stand behind.
Hurricane season runs June through November across the region — and a tender port loses calls to sea state faster than a pier does.
Accessibility, and the gap at the worst possible point.
No official source publishes anything about boarding a tender here with a mobility aid. That is the single most consequential unknown on this page — and we cannot close it.
That guide found the four-hour city coach tour the only Belize excursion with a positive accessibility rating — ambulatory accessible, collapsible wheelchairs allowed.
Cave tubing, Altun Ha, Xunantunich, Lamanai, the reef trip and even the two-hour river cruise all carry the same exclusion for wheelchairs, canes, rollators and other mobility devices.
Ask your line's access team before you sail. Not at the gangway.

Belize City FAQ
Does Belize City still tender, or is there a pier now?
It still tenders, and you should plan on tendering through 2027.
Ships anchor off the city because the inshore water is too shallow for them, and local boats run you in to Fort Street Tourism Village at the mouth of Haulover Creek.
Our Belize guide reports the long-running Stake Bank project relaunched as Olo Caye in April 2026 — pre-construction, with island completion targeted for early 2028. We could not re-verify that on September 21, 2026 — the project site was disallowed by robots and a Belizean broadcaster's site failed TLS verification — so treat it as carried forward rather than confirmed.
How long is the tender ride in Belize, really?
Between 15 and 20 minutes each way, and the spread is genuine.
The Belize Tourism Board's own cruise page says "approximately 15 minutes ship to shore." cruisemapper and adventourbegins say 15 to 20 each way, cruisealert says about 20, iqcruising says around 20, and cruiseportadvisor calls it "about a 20-minute, often choppy, ride."
The ride is not the expensive part.
The queue at each end is, and it is the part nobody can publish. Budget for both.
How far offshore does the ship anchor?
About two miles, on four guides' agreement rather than on anybody's published figure.
cruisehive, iqcruising, cruisealert and profmelissa all put it at roughly two miles or 3.2 kilometres, and all four give shallow water as the reason. No official Belizean source we could read publishes the anchorage distance at all.
So we print the consensus and label it. It is four guides saying the same thing, not a harbour chart.
Our own hub calls this a long tender ride. Is it?
Not the ride. The chain.
Fifteen to twenty minutes over two miles is an ordinary Caribbean tender. Grand Cayman's is four to ten minutes, and plenty of Eastern Caribbean ports have piers.
What is long in Belize is everything wrapped around it — a morning boarding queue, the crossing out, the crossing back, and a return queue that cruisealert says can run 30 minutes or longer when several ships are in. Call it close to an hour and a half of the port day before you reach a road. Our hub entry is pointing at a real cost from slightly the wrong angle, and this page says so rather than quietly agreeing with it.
How much buffer should I leave for the last tender?
cruisealert says a minimum of 45 to 60 minutes before your ship's last tender time, and we would not shave that.
It is a guide's number, not the port's. Nobody official publishes a buffer for Belize City.
Work to the last tender time in your daily program rather than to all-aboard. Those are different times, and the tender one is the one that binds.
Where exactly do the tenders land, and what is there?
At the Fort Street Tourism Village Tender Pier, which cruisealert gives at 8 Fort Street with four tender docking points and a gated, secured perimeter.
The Belize Tourism Board describes the Village itself as an open-air mini-mall with several courtyards, snack bars and local stores with duty-free shopping, plus restaurants and live local entertainment.
adventourbegins names four terminal areas — REEF, JAGUAR, MAYA and PIRATE. Remember which one you came in through, because on a multi-ship day that is how you find your boat back.
Can I walk out of the Tourism Village into Belize City?
You can, and the core is small enough to be worth it. cruisealert puts the Swing Bridge about 600 metres and roughly ten minutes from the gate, and cruisemapper says about 0.6 kilometres.
The Belize Marine Terminal, for water taxis to Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, is a short walk along the waterfront at 111 North Front Street.
Know where the advisory's line is before you wander. The State Department's March 2026 advisory tells travellers to reconsider travel to Southside Belize City, and it draws the boundary itself — from the Haulover Creek Canal to Fabers Road.
Is Harvest Caye the same as the Belize City cruise port?
No, and the difference is total.
Harvest Caye is a separate facility in the Stann Creek District with an actual docking berth, serving Norwegian Cruise Line. The Belize Port Authority lists it as one of eight separate Belize port facilities.
If your itinerary says Harvest Caye, nothing on this page applies to your day — no tender, no city, no Swing Bridge. Read our Harvest Caye guide instead.
Should I book through the ship in Belize?
More often than anywhere else in the Western Caribbean, and it is about the clock rather than the content.
Carnival's own listings put cave tubing at about 75 minutes each way and Xunantunich or Lamanai at about two hours each way. Stack a seven-hour tour on two tender crossings and a nine-hour call and the margin disappears.
What the ship's version buys is a coach that meets the tender and a ship that waits for its own tour. It is not better access and it is not a better guide. Close to the pier — the city centre, a short river trip — independent works fine, and the Tourism Board requires every guide and operator to carry a licence and photo ID, so ask to see it.
What currency should I carry, and what will things cost?
Either, so long as you know which one you are being quoted.
The Belize dollar is fixed at BZ$2.00 to US$1.00, a peg the Central Bank of Belize dates to 11 May 1976, with the bank's buying rate for US monetary instruments fixed at the same 2:1 from 1 June 2023.
Taxis are the place it bites. Very few use meters, city rides run roughly BZ$6 to BZ$14 on our own guide's secondary sourcing and about US$10 on cruisealert's, and the fare is whatever you agreed before the door closed.
Is Belize City safe for a cruise passenger?
The advisory's answer is geographic, which makes it usable.
Belize is Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, issued March 12, 2026, and the one area it names is Southside Belize City — reconsider travel there due to crime. It says gangs drive most violent crime, with isolated incidents even during the day and in tourist areas.
The tourist core north of the creek is sold by the lines themselves as a rated-Easy four-hour coach tour, which is the fairest evidence available that it reads as a normal half-day. Know where the line is and stay north of it.
Can I do this port in a wheelchair?
We cannot tell you about the tender, and that is the honest answer at the worst possible point in the day.
No official source publishes anything about boarding a Belize tender with a mobility aid.
Ashore, our Belize guide found the four-hour city coach tour the only Belize excursion with a positive accessibility rating — ambulatory accessible, collapsible wheelchairs allowed. Cave tubing, Altun Ha, Xunantunich, Lamanai, the reef trip and the two-hour river cruise all exclude wheelchairs, canes and rollators. Ask your line's access team before you sail.
