Airlie Beach excursions, from the free Lagoon to the outer reef
Each boat trip here is measured against one question: does it leave after you land and get back before you sail?
Most of the island timetables we checked suit people staying in Airlie, so many don’t pass. The cards say which ones do.
Landing points, walks and paperwork live on our Airlie Beach cruise port guide. If your sailing also calls further north, our Cairns shore excursion guide covers the other big reef port.
Free · from the tender
The Airlie Beach Lagoon and the main street, on foot
The easy Airlie Beach day costs nothing and starts almost at the tender steps.
From the Port of Airlie marina, the main street is roughly a 5-to-10-minute walk. The Lagoon is right in the middle of town — a council-run swimming lagoon by the foreshore.
Carnival calls it free and stinger-safe. That second part matters more than it sounds, because the open sea here carries box jellyfish and Irukandji for much of the year.
Add lunch and a coffee on the strip, and you’ve had a gentle tropical half-day without a single booking.
- Time commitment
- As long as you like — two to three hours is a relaxed visit.
- Getting there
- On foot from the Port of Airlie. From Shute Harbour, take a bus or taxi first.
- Suits
- Families, short calls, budget days, anyone who doesn’t want a boat.
- Ship or independent
- Independent. A tour would add very little here.
Why it's worth considering
Swimming in the tropics without a stinger suit, a few minutes from where the tender lands.
The council posts lifeguards from 5:30am, with the evening finish an hour earlier in winter (May to August).
The catch
It’s a town pool by the sea — not the Whitsundays you saw in the brochure.
Bring your own towel and shade — we found no published details on lockers or rentals.
Verify before you book
- Your landing point — Port of Airlie or Shute Harbour
- Lifeguard hours for your month
- Last tender time back to the ship

The Bicentennial Boardwalk to Cannonvale, plus Saturday markets
If the Lagoon is the swim, the boardwalk is the walk.
The Bicentennial Boardwalk follows the shore between Airlie Beach and Cannonvale. Published lengths disagree by a factor of two, so set your own turnaround and don’t trust either number for timing the tender.
Land on a Saturday and the Airlie Beach Markets run in the morning too. That turns a free walk into a free walk with stalls.
- Time commitment
- Up to about 2 hours of walking for the full route, per CruiseMapper — less if you turn back early.
- Getting there
- Start in town, a short walk from the Port of Airlie.
- Suits
- Couples, walkers, budget days, anyone in on a Saturday.
- Ship or independent
- Independent.
Why it's worth considering
Water views the whole way, at no cost, and you set the turnaround point.
It pairs easily with the Lagoon. Walk first, swim after — not the other way round.
The catch
The sun is the hazard here, not the distance. Go early, carry water, and wear a hat.
The markets are a Saturday thing. Any other day, it’s just the path.
Verify before you book
- Your call day, if the markets matter
- The midday heat forecast
- Time back at the marina for the tender queue
This is the tour most people picture when they book an Airlie Beach call — and on a typical port day, it’s the one that fits.
Carnival’s Beautiful Whitehaven Beach runs 6 hours, from US$324.99. You board a two-level, high-speed catamaran directly from the ship, so there’s no tender queue first.
It’s about 75 minutes of cruising through the islands to get there, then roughly two hours on Whitehaven’s white silica sand. Lunch and drinks, alcohol included, come on the way back.
Snorkeling isn’t part of it. This is a beach day, not a reef day.
- Time commitment
- About 6 hours.
- Getting there
- The catamaran collects you from the ship.
- Suits
- First-timers, families with confident walkers, couples.
- Ship or independent
- Ship. The timing is built around your call, which the public boats’ timetables aren’t — see the next card.
Why it's worth considering
It’s matched to the ship’s hours, not a hotel’s, and it skips the tender entirely.
Two hours on Whitehaven’s sand, with lunch handled.
The catch
Carnival says it isn’t suitable for guests with limited mobility or wheelchair users. The gangway can be steep at some tides, and you step off a small boat onto the sand with wet feet.
At some times of year stinger suits are recommended. Carnival says they may be provided — confirm before you go.
Verify before you book
- That your line sells a version and its exact duration
- Whether stinger suits are supplied in your month
- Mobility requirements with the shore excursions desk
Cheaper than the ship’s tour, and it leaves from the same marina your tender uses. The problem is the clock, not the boat.
Cruise Whitsundays runs its half-day Whitehaven trip from its Maritime Terminal at the Port of Airlie. The listings show two departures: 7:15am, back at 2:15pm, and 11:35am, back at 6:05pm.
Adults paid AUD 155 on a deal price when we checked, against AUD 159 standard, with children at AUD 63. You get up to two hours on the beach, plus morning or afternoon tea.
Now hold those times against a ship that drops anchor at 8am and sails at 4pm or 5pm, as the Carnival calls on CruiseMapper do. The morning boat has gone before you’re ashore. The afternoon boat gets back after you’ve sailed.
- Time commitment
- About 7 hours, by the operator’s own estimate.
- Getting there
- Walk from the Port of Airlie tender landing to 24 The Cove Road. Check-in is 30 minutes before departure.
- Suits
- Budget travelers on an unusually long call.
- Ship or independent
- Independent — worth considering when your times line up, and not otherwise.
Why it's worth considering
A lower ticket for the same beach — AUD 155 against Carnival’s US$324.99, in two different currencies — with up to two hours on the sand.
The morning trip includes stinger suits and the southern Whitehaven lookout.
The catch
On a standard 8am-to-4pm or 5pm call, neither departure works. One leaves too early, the other returns too late.
It also stops at Daydream and Hamilton Islands on the way back, and one reviewer on the Air New Zealand listing reported less beach time and a later return than planned.

If you want the Hill Inlet lookout plus a snorkel, this is the trip built for it.
Ocean Rafting’s Southern Lights tour leaves Coral Sea Marina North, next to Sorrento Restaurant & Bar, at 10am, with check-in at 9am. It returns at 4:30pm.
The day includes one snorkeling stop with gear and a guided bush-walk up to the Hill Inlet Lookout — the view, not just the beach. Lunch is a $20 add-on, and a sunsuit or wetsuit costs $8.
Coral Sea Marina is a short taxi ride from the Port of Airlie — build that into your morning.
- Time commitment
- About 7.5 hours from check-in to return, on the published times.
- Getting there
- Taxi from the Port of Airlie to Coral Sea Marina North.
- Suits
- Active couples, confident swimmers, repeat visitors.
- Ship or independent
- Independent, if your call is long enough to absorb a 4:30pm return.
Why it's worth considering
Hill Inlet from the lookout, which the beach-only trips don’t include.
A snorkel stop, so you see the water, not just the sand.
The catch
A 4:30pm return at a different marina leaves no room on a 4pm or 5pm sailing. A third-party boat won’t hold the ship.
We didn’t find the base price, a duration or any health restrictions on the listing — ask Ocean Rafting directly before booking a fast boat.
Verify before you book
- All-aboard time against the 4:30pm return
- Base fare and what’s included
- Back, pregnancy or health limits for a fast boat
On a short call, this is the way to see the Whitsundays and still be back for lunch.
Carnival’s Airlie Beach page lists a scenic flight over Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and Heart Reef. Local listings put the flight at about an hour.
Heart Reef is the one named for its shape. The shape only reads from above, and the listings we found sell it as a flight.
The package we checked departs from a small airport close to the main street.
- Time commitment
- About an hour of flying, plus transfers and check-in.
- Getting there
- A short drive from town. Ask the operator about pickup from the marina.
- Suits
- Couples, photographers, short calls, anyone who’d rather not spend six hours on a boat.
- Ship or independent
- Either. Independent works well, since the flight is short enough to leave you a big margin.
Why it's worth considering
The reef and the islands in one sweep — an hour, not a whole boat day.
It’s short enough to fit even a tight call, with the Lagoon afterward.
The catch
Passengers are weighed, with a 120 kg (about 265 lb) per-seat limit on the package we checked; ask what the operator needs at booking.
Scenic flights depend on the weather, so ask what happens if yours is called off. We didn’t find a published price for the stand-alone flight — get a quote first.

This is the Great Barrier Reef proper — and from a cruise call, it’s a long reach.
Cruise Whitsundays’ Great Barrier Reef Adventure to Reefworld is listed at 9 hours from Airlie Beach, departing at 8am after a 30-minute check-in.
The day includes a semi-submarine tour, the underwater observatory, a buffet lunch, morning and afternoon tea, and snorkel gear with stinger suits.
Expedia showed the adult ticket at US$231.25, taxes and fees in. The reef charge for a full day is $8.50, collected by the operator.
- Time commitment
- About 9 hours, plus check-in.
- Getting there
- Check-in is at the Maritime Terminal at the Port of Airlie.
- Suits
- Snorkelers and families on a long call, if the times work.
- Ship or independent
- Either — but buy it from the ship if your line sells it, because the public departure assumes you’re already ashore by 7:30am.
Why it's worth considering
Coral and fish on the outer reef — with a semi-sub and observatory for anyone who doesn’t snorkel.
Lunch, tea and the gear are included — the ticket price is the day’s price.
The catch
An 8am departure and a 9-hour day don’t fit an 8am anchor time. You’d still be at sea when a 4pm or 5pm ship sails.
If the reef is the reason for this cruise, look hard at Cairns too, if your itinerary calls there.
Verify before you book
- Whether your line sells a reef day timed to the ship
- Your call length, honestly
- That stinger suits are included in your month

Airlie Beach with the ship or on your own
In town, go it alone
The Lagoon, the main street and the boardwalk need little more than sunscreen. You’re walking from the tender landing, and you set your own return.
A scenic flight also works independently. It’s short, so a delay costs you minutes rather than the ship.
On the water, the ship’s timing earns its fare
Carnival’s Whitehaven catamaran collects you from the ship and runs about 6 hours. That’s the difference that matters, not the lunch.
The public boats run 7:15am to 2:15pm, 11:35am to 6:05pm, or 8am for nine hours. On an 8am-to-4pm call, none of those fit.
Where the prices stop
Carnival prints US-dollar prices. The Cruise Whitsundays listings show Australian dollars, and the reef charge comes on top unless the listing says “includes levy.”
For the stand-alone scenic flight and Ocean Rafting’s base fare, ask for a quote first.
How each option compares in Airlie Beach
| Excursion | Lean ship excursion when… | Independent works when… |
| Lagoon and main street | Rarely worth it | Yes — a short walk from the Port of Airlie |
| Bicentennial Boardwalk | Not needed | Yes — free, on foot from town |
| Whitehaven Beach | Yes — the catamaran boards from the ship | If a public departure fits your call — rarely |
| Hill Inlet and snorkeling | If your line sells a timed version | With a call long enough for a 4:30pm return |
| Scenic flight | If you want transfers handled | Yes — it’s about an hour |
| Outer reef at Reefworld | Yes, if it’s offered | Rarely — the public trip runs 9 hours from 8am |
Short answer
Book the ship’s Whitehaven catamaran if the beach is why you came — it’s the island trip that matches your hours. On a short call, take a scenic flight instead. Either way, finish in the Lagoon. Leave the public boats and the reef day for a call that runs well into the evening.

Airlie Beach port logistics: the tender, the marinas and the paperwork
From the ship into town
Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers in, usually to the Port of Airlie marina. Some calls use Shute Harbour instead.
From the Port of Airlie, the main street is about 5 to 10 minutes on foot. Cruise Whitsundays’ Maritime Terminal is at the same marina, at 24 The Cove Road.
More landing-point detail is on our Airlie Beach cruise port guide.
- Shute Harbour is about 10 km east, roughly 15 minutes by road
- Coral Sea Marina, where Ocean Rafting departs, is a short taxi ride
- No published taxi fare — agree it first
Two marinas, two departure points
Cruise Whitsundays leaves from the Port of Airlie, where your tender usually lands. Ocean Rafting leaves from Coral Sea Marina North.
Check which marina your boat uses before you walk off. Getting it wrong costs you a taxi — and maybe the departure.
The reef charge
The Reef Authority’s charge runs $8.50 a head on trips of three hours or more, $4.25 on shorter ones.
From April 1, 2027, those go up to $9.00 and $4.50 — check which rate your ticket assumes.
Safety and paperwork
The State Department’s national advisory for Australia is Level 1, exercise normal precautions (issued August 18, 2026; checked October 29, 2026).
US passport holders need a visa or an approved ETA before arrival. Apply in the AustralianETA app well before you fly.
