Laem Chabang excursions, from Pattaya taxis to a night in Bangkok
Ranked on one test: does the booking make the miles worth it? Judge the road time first and the stop list second, because on this call the road is the expensive part, not the tickets.
Four of these head for Bangkok or beyond, and the other four stay on the Pattaya side — which matters more than it sounds on a short call.
Berth, taxis, baht and the arrival card are on our Laem Chabang cruise port guide. If the ship sails on to Vietnam, our Ho Chi Minh City excursion guide picks up the story there.
This is the tour most people mean when they say they’re “doing Bangkok” from the ship — three temples and the palace, with someone else driving.
Shore Excursions Group’s Full Day Cultural Bangkok From Laem Chabang lists 6 hours at $217.99. It visits Wat Traimit’s Golden Buddha, the Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha, then Wat Pho’s Reclining Buddha, with Wat Arun as a pass-by or photo stop.
Lunch is a stop or a boxed meal, “time permitting.” Read that as a hint about how tight the day runs.
The palace’s own site charges foreigners 500 baht, which covers Wat Phra Kaew, and stops selling tickets at 3:30 PM.
- Time commitment
- About 6 hours on SEG’s listing. With a drive of 1.5 to 2.5 hours each way, ask whether that figure counts the road.
- Getting there
- Vehicle from the port.
- Suits
- First-timers who want the palace and the big temples in one go.
- Ship or independent
- Either — the ship’s version carries the line’s return-to-ship backing; for SEG’s, read its missed-ship terms before you pay.
Why it's worth considering
The palace, the Emerald Buddha and the Reclining Buddha are the headline sights of old Bangkok, and this hits all of them. The palace stops selling tickets at 3:30 PM and enforces a strict dress code, and a set program is built around both.
The catch
Six hours with three or more hours of driving leaves little time inside each temple, so expect to be moved along — this is a highlights run, not a slow look. Wat Arun is a photo stop on this one. If the riverside temple matters to you, pick a tour that actually goes in — AAA’s private listing and Holland America’s overnight both name it.
Verify before you book
- Whether admissions are included in the price
- The return time against your all-aboard
- What happens if the palace closes that day
For a family or two couples, a private car makes the long drive tolerable — you leave when you’re ready, and you skip the coach headcount at each stop.
SEG’s Private Highlights of Bangkok runs 8 hours from $131.99 per person, lunch included. Its Private Bangkok Orientation runs 9 hours from $203.99 per person and adds a long-tail boat from Tha Chang pier, Chinatown and the flower market if time allows.
A private listing on AAA’s TripCanvas site runs 6 to 8 hours with a long-tail boat, admissions and water, and swaps in Wat Traimit if the palace is shut.
- Time commitment
- About 8 to 9 hours, by booking.
- Getting there
- Pickup at the cruise terminal.
- Suits
- Families, small groups, anyone who wants the river and Chinatown as well as the palace.
- Ship or independent
- Independent — put the return time and a backup contact in writing before the day.
Why it's worth considering
You can trade one temple for a river ride or a long lunch, which a coach won’t let you do. SEG’s private prices are per-person “from” figures that depend on the party, so a group is where they look best — check your exact headcount.
The catch
Nine hours plus a return buffer needs a long call, and on a day stop of 10 hours or less it’s too tight — take the 6-hour group day or Pattaya instead. The listings show “from” prices only, so confirm the total for your party before you pay.
Verify before you book
- The total price for your group, not the “from” figure
- Whether temple tickets are included
- A named contact if the car runs late
When your ship stays overnight, this is the calmest way to see Bangkok properly — one drive each way, and a bed in the city between them.
Holland America’s Bangkok Overnight Silver Package lists about 27½ hours from $549 per person, double occupancy. The listing we read showed no single price. The program includes a canal-launch visit to Wat Arun, a Thai dinner with a dance show, Chinatown, the flower market, Wat Po, the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew.
It must be booked before you sail, and if you cancel inside 60 days of the call you pay in full — this is a commitment, not a whim.
- Time commitment
- About 27½ hours on Holland America’s listing.
- Getting there
- Transfer from the ship, with a canal launch to Wat Arun.
- Suits
- Couples and first-timers on an overnight call.
- Ship or independent
- Ship — the line handles the hotel, the dinner and the ride back.
Why it's worth considering
One round trip of driving covers two days of sightseeing, so the city isn’t a sprint against the clock. By our count of CruiseTimetables’ 2027 times, more than half the calls here look like overnights — so ask your line whether it sells a version.
The catch
Holland America rates it strenuous and not wheelchair accessible, with a minimum age of 6. The 60-day cancellation rule bites if your plans shift, so be sure of the dates before you book.
Verify before you book
- Your own line’s version, price and hotel
- The cancellation window
- Whether your ship’s call is a true overnight
If the Bangkok drive sounds like too much, Pattaya is the short answer — about half an hour from the berth.
SEG’s Cultural Pattaya Discovery and Sanctuary of Truth runs 5 hours, on sale at $268.99 (down from $292.99) when we checked. It covers the Big Buddha, the Pattaya View Point and the Sanctuary of Truth.
Forever Karen reports that visitors wore hard hats at the Sanctuary when she went.
- Time commitment
- About 5 hours.
- Getting there
- Small-group vehicle from the port.
- Suits
- Short calls, repeat visitors, anyone who’s seen Bangkok before.
- Ship or independent
- Either — the drive is short, so a third-party tour carries less risk than a Bangkok one.
Why it's worth considering
The drive is a fraction of the Bangkok run, so more of the five hours goes to sights. There’s no Bangkok traffic gamble between you and the gangway.
The catch
At about $269 for 5 hours, it’s a pricier hour than the Bangkok day. Pattaya is a beach resort, not a royal capital — if the Grand Palace is why you booked this cruise, this won’t scratch the itch.
Verify before you book
- Sanctuary of Truth entry and dress rules
- Group size
- Food arrangements, since none is included
The Pattaya-side day with the most in it, and the one where the private price beats the group one by a long way.
SEG’s Private Culture, Gardens and the Sanctuary of Truth runs 8 hours from $122.99 per person, lunch included. The listing we noted doesn’t say which gardens it visits or whether a show is part of the day.
SEG’s group Nong Nooch Garden and Thai Cultural Show with Lunch also runs 8 hours — at $428.99.
- Time commitment
- About 8 hours.
- Getting there
- Vehicle from the port; the private version is yours alone.
- Suits
- Families and couples who want a full day without the Bangkok drive.
- Ship or independent
- Independent and private — compare it with your line’s Pattaya tour first.
Why it's worth considering
The gardens and show suit mixed ages better than a run of temples does. Both stay on the Pattaya side, away from the Bangkok highway.
The catch
The $122.99 is a “from” price; the total depends on your group size. A staged cultural show is entertainment, not anthropology — go for the gardens if that doesn’t appeal.
Verify before you book
- The total for your headcount
- Whether the private day includes Nong Nooch and a show
- What lunch includes
This one trades Bangkok’s palace for ruins — for repeat visitors, it’s the fresh day out.
SEG’s Private Ayuttaya Day Trip (its spelling) runs 9 hours from $169.99 per person. It stops at the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace, then takes a tuk-tuk to Wat Phra Sri Sanphet in the old capital.
- Time commitment
- About 9 hours.
- Getting there
- Private car from the port.
- Suits
- Repeat visitors and history lovers on long or overnight calls.
- Ship or independent
- Independent and private — confirm the return time in writing.
Why it's worth considering
If you’ve already stood in the Grand Palace, this shows you a different Thailand — and a quieter one.
The catch
Ayutthaya lies north of Bangkok, so expect a longer drive than the Bangkok tours — ask the operator for the time, because a delay on the way back has nowhere to go. Food isn’t included, so agree a lunch stop with the driver before you set off.
Verify before you book
- Your exact arrival and all-aboard times
- Drive time as the operator quotes it
- Entry fees at each site

Khao Kheow Open Zoo
For kids who’d mutiny at a third temple, the open zoo is the honest alternative.
SEG’s Private Pattaya Adventure at Khao Kheow Open Safari runs 9 hours from $169.99 per person, food not included.
- Time commitment
- About 9 hours.
- Getting there
- Private car from the port.
- Suits
- Families with younger children.
- Ship or independent
- Independent and private; your line may sell a version too.
Why it's worth considering
It gives a family a day built around the kids, without the Bangkok road.
The catch
Nine hours is a long day for small children — ask the operator whether you can cut it short. SEG lists no lunch, so pack snacks or plan a stop.
Verify before you book
- Whether zoo entry is in the price
- A shorter option if the kids fade
- Car seats, if you need them
DIY · shuttle or taxi
Pattaya on your own
The lowest-effort day ashore, if all you want is a beach, a massage and lunch.
Forever Karen reports a ship’s shuttle to Pattaya at US$69 per person on her sailing. She lists a small-car taxi at 1,400 baht one way, or 3,850 baht for a sightseeing hire.
Ride-hail cars can’t reach the terminal, in her account, so getting back means a taxi or a shuttle with a fixed time.
- Time commitment
- As long as you like, inside your all-aboard.
- Getting there
- Ship shuttle where offered, or a taxi from outside the terminal.
- Suits
- Budget days, repeat visitors, anyone who wants an easy afternoon.
- Ship or independent
- Independent, with the ship’s shuttle as the safer return.
Why it's worth considering
Pattaya is close, so a delay costs less here than it would on the Bangkok road.
The catch
Those prices are one traveler’s figures, not a tariff — your line’s shuttle may cost more, less or not run at all. Agree the taxi fare and the pickup time before you go, and carry the driver’s number.
Verify before you book
- Whether your ship runs a Pattaya shuttle, and its last return
- A fixed taxi price both ways
- Baht in small notes

Laem Chabang with the ship or on your own
Third-party Bangkok tours price well
SEG’s private Bangkok highlights day starts at $131.99 per person with lunch, and its full group temple day at $217.99.
Unless the booking says otherwise, a car stuck on the motorway is your risk, not the ship’s — read the return terms.
The ship sells the return, and the overnight
We didn’t find a line’s Bangkok day-tour listing we could read and price, so we can’t compare it with SEG. Still, on a day call the ship’s own coach can be the safer buy — you’re paying for the return, not the stops.
On an overnight, the ship’s hotel package is hard to beat for ease — book it early, because Holland America’s turns non-refundable 60 days out.
Pattaya is where independent shines
The drive is short, so a late car costs you minutes, not the ship.
Here, the private SEG garden day at $122.99 per person undercuts the $428.99 group one by a wide margin — price private first, then compare.
How each option compares in Laem Chabang
| Excursion | Lean ship excursion when… | Independent works when… |
| Grand Palace temple day | You want the line’s return backing on a 10- to 12-hour call | You have a long call and a confirmed pickup |
| Private Bangkok car | Ask your line | Worth pricing for a group — confirm the total |
| Bangkok overnight | Worth asking your line about on an overnight call | Only if you’ll book your own hotel and transfers |
| Sanctuary of Truth half day | If your line’s version is close in price | Low-risk with a third party |
| Nong Nooch and the gardens | If you want the line backing the day | Private SEG version, priced well |
| Ayutthaya | If your line runs it on an overnight | Private car, long call only |
| Pattaya on your own | Ship shuttle, where offered | Fixed-price taxi, both ways agreed |
Short answer
First visit on a long day call, 10 to 12 hours by Cruise Deals, Tips & Tricks’ reckoning: book a Bangkok temple day, through the ship for the return backing or privately for the pace. On an overnight, take the hotel package. Shorter call, or seen Bangkok already? Go to Pattaya and enjoy having time to spare — it’s a better day than three rushed hours in the city.

Laem Chabang logistics: the drive, money and the arrival card
From the berth to Bangkok
Ships dock inside the container port at the Laem Chabang International Terminal, per CruiseMapper. Ship tours load at the terminal; confirm the meeting point for anything booked outside the ship.
Holland America’s tour notes put Bangkok about 2 to 2.5 hours away. Full terminal detail is on our Laem Chabang cruise port guide.
- Confirm tour meeting points in writing
- Taxis outside the terminal area, per a reader report
- Ride-hail can’t enter the port, per one blogger
Money
Bring Thai baht for temple tickets, toilets and tips — small notes, not just a card. The Grand Palace charges foreigners 500 baht; The Better Vacation lists Wat Pho at 300 baht and Wat Arun at 200.
Check whether your tour includes admissions before you count your cash.
Timing
The palace sells tickets until 3:30 PM, per its own site. Wat Arun’s last entry is about 5:30 PM, says The Better Vacation.
Work backward from all-aboard: the drive, then an hour of slack, then your last temple.
Paperwork and safety
File the Thailand Digital Arrival Card in the three days before arrival, per Universal Weather’s summary of the rule. The State Department rates Thailand Level 1, exercise normal precautions, nationally (issued July 7, 2026; checked October 29, 2026).
Carry your passport ashore if your ship says to — Holland America asks for it on its Bangkok overnight.
