Nawiliwili excursions, from the free beach to the long north-shore drive
Ordered by the question Kauai is asking this autumn: is it running?
The beach, the helicopters, the riverboat and Kipu Ranch are a yes, and Hāʻena is a yes with a reservation.
The Nā Pali boats come down to the hour you sail — and Waimea Canyon is on hold, not cancelled.
Berth details, rental-car shuttles and the bus are on our Nawiliwili cruise port guide; for the week’s other stops, see Kahului, Hilo and Kona.
Kalapaki is the plan that works whatever else falls through — and on Kauai this autumn, things fall through.
The beach sits next to Nawiliwili Harbor, in front of the Kauai Marriott. The state tourism board lists bodysurfing, paddleboarding, surfing and swimming as the draws.
Add the Harbor Mall and Anchor Cove shops for lunch, and you have a gentle half-day without a single reservation.
On Pride of America it does double duty. Do Thursday’s big excursion, then spend Friday morning here before all-aboard — earlier than the reported 2 p.m. departure, so check your app.
- Time commitment
- An hour to a morning — your call.
- Getting there
- On foot. Roughly ten minutes by our estimate; no official figure is published.
- Cost
- Free.
- Ship or independent
- Independent. There’s nothing to book.
Why it's worth considering
It costs nothing and uses none of the hours you need for a longer trip.
It’s the low-stress fallback if a boat, a flight or a park reservation falls through.
The catch
It’s a harbor-side resort beach — pleasant, not the wild north-shore scenery people fly to Kauai for.
Verify before you book
- Surf and water conditions on the day
- Your ship’s all-aboard time if you’re fitting this in on Friday
With Waimea Canyon State Park closed, flying over it is the way to see the canyon this month — and the same hour covers Nā Pali.
Blue Hawaiian’s Kauai Eco Adventure runs 50 minutes from the Līhuʻe heliport. Its listed route takes in Manawaiopuna Falls, Waimea Canyon, the Nā Pali sea cliffs and Hanalei Bay.
Jack Harter’s doors-off flight runs 60 to 65 minutes from its own Līhuʻe helipad, for $460 including a $50 fuel surcharge.
Blue Hawaiian says every sight on the route depends on the weather. Clouds can reshape the flight, or delay it.
Both heliports are on Ahukini Road in Līhuʻe — 3730 for Blue Hawaiian, 4231 for Jack Harter — a short ride from the pier by our reckoning, not a cross-island trek. That makes it the easiest big-ticket tour to fit around Pride’s hours.
- Time commitment
- About 50 to 65 minutes of flying, plus check-in — Jack Harter asks for 45 minutes before the flight.
- Getting there
- Taxi, rideshare or rental car to Ahukini Road, Līhuʻe.
- Cost
- From $409 per person (Blue Hawaiian); $460 per person (Jack Harter doors-off).
- Ship or independent
- Either. The operators publish their own prices and weight rules.
Why it's worth considering
It shows you both of Kauai’s headline sights in one go while the canyon road stays shut.
Short and close to the port, so it fits a Thursday afternoon or an early Friday.
The catch
It’s an expensive hour — $409 is the starting price, not the average.
Weight rules are strict: Jack Harter charges an extra seat for passengers over 250 lbs, and Blue Hawaiian caps front-row passengers at 240 lbs.
Verify before you book
- That your flight time leaves a buffer before all-aboard
- Weight and seating rules for your group
- Jack Harter’s minimum age of 10
From the water, the Nā Pali cliffs are the Kauai picture — but on Pride of America the classic morning sail is a scheduling problem, not a sure thing.
Capt Andy’s shows the problem. On the winter 2026–27 schedule Cruise Hive reports (sailings October 3, 2026 to March 27, 2027), Pride arrives Thursday at 8 a.m. — but the Star Snorkel BBQ Sail checks in at Port Allen at 7:15 a.m. and the Star Scenic Sail at 8:15 a.m.
Friday doesn’t rescue it. The snorkel sail is back at Port Allen at 1:30 p.m., 30 minutes before the reported 2 p.m. departure, and all-aboard is earlier than departure. Check your app; that boat won’t fit.
The Star Dinner Sunset Sail is the one that fits. It checks in at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, runs about 4.5 hours, and costs $260 for adults.
Lowell hit the harbors too. As of October 3, Port Allen’s small boat harbor had its launch ramp back but its slips and moorings shut.
Capt Andy’s, Holo Holo, Blue Dolphin and Kauai Sea Tours sail from the main Port Allen Harbor, not the small boat one. Capt Andy’s site showed no suspension notice on October 19; we couldn’t load the other three, so ask them directly.
- Time commitment
- About 4.5 hours on Capt Andy’s sunset sail, plus the drive to Port Allen each way.
- Getting there
- Rental car or taxi to Port Allen, on the south-west coast near Eleʻele.
- Cost
- $260 adults (13+), $240 children 3 to 12, on Capt Andy’s sunset sail; the snorkel sail is priced the same.
- Ship or independent
- Independent for now — we didn’t see a Nā Pali boat in the NCL listings we could read.
Why it's worth considering
It puts you at sea level under the cliffs, a view the trail and the helicopter don’t give you.
On a long single-day call from another line, the timing can work.
The catch
The morning sails clash with Pride’s Thursday arrival and Friday departure — and the sunset sail eats the luau night.
Sea state rules the day; Capt Andy’s says swells are more common in winter and spring.
Verify before you book
- That your operator is running after Hurricane Lowell, and from which harbor
- The sunset sail runs on your Thursday
- The refund policy for a weather cancellation — Capt Andy’s offers a refund or reschedule if it cancels
Running, with limits
Wailua River and Fern Grotto
This is the classic Kauai tour still running in its usual form, which counts for a lot this season.
The Wailua River reopened September 21 with restrictions. DLNR names Smith’s Motor Boat Tours as cleared for the Fern Grotto landing, and keeps individual kayakers out of the grotto.
Booked direct, Smith’s round trip takes 1 hour 20 minutes, with boats at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. It’s $35 for adults and $17.50 for children, plus the state’s $5 entry and $10 parking for non-residents, card only.
NCL’s Wailua Riverboat, Fern Grotto & ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls tour wraps the same river in about 3.5 hours, transfers included.
If you’d planned to paddle the river to Uluwehi, known as Secret Falls, drop that plan. DLNR has it closed, and hiking past the trailhead is prohibited.
- Time commitment
- 1 hour 20 minutes on the boat; about 3.5 hours on NCL’s tour.
- Getting there
- The Wailua River is on the east side, a short drive north of Līhuʻe.
- Cost
- $35 adults, $17.50 children with Smith’s, plus state park fees. NCL’s US-dollar price wasn’t on the pages we could read.
- Ship or independent
- Either. The ship tour handles the transfer; with a car, Smith’s sells seats direct.
Why it's worth considering
It’s open, short, and gentle — a boat ride, not a hike.
Half a day leaves room for the beach or a luau on the same Thursday.
The catch
It’s a gentle riverboat ride, not wilderness — and NCL warns the grotto paths can be slippery.
Verify before you book
- That the Fern Grotto landing is open on your date
- Whether your tour substitutes a garden visit if the grotto is unavailable
For a self-drive Thursday, the north shore is the big day that’s actually open right now.
Hanalei Bay is the town stop. Beyond it are Hāʻena State Park and Keʻe Beach, where the Kalalau Trail sets off along the Nā Pali coast.
Hāʻena reopened October 15 after its Lowell closure. Day hikes to Hanakāpīʻai Beach and Hanakāpīʻai Falls are open; the trail beyond two miles is not.
You need a reservation from gohaena.com. Slots open 30 days ahead and sell out fast, so put a reminder in your phone the month before.
Pick the right slot. The morning parking window runs 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Pride’s reported winter arrival is 8 a.m. — by the time you’ve driven up, most of it is gone. Take the afternoon window or the shuttle on Thursday.
Black Pot Beach Park in Hanalei was on the County’s closed list on September 18. Its October 8 update doesn’t mention it, so check before you plan a swim there.
Prefer a guide? NCL’s Wailua River State Park, Lighthouse & Hanalei tour runs about 6.25 hours and stops in Hanalei for lunch.
- Time commitment
- A full day by car. The county bus needs about 88 minutes to reach Hanalei from Kauai Community College, which tells you the distance.
- Getting there
- Rental car to Hanalei, then your parking slot or the shuttle from Princeville or Waipā.
- Cost
- Hāʻena: $10 a vehicle per timeslot plus $5 entry per person, or $40 shuttle (ages 16+), $25 (ages 4 to 15).
- Ship or independent
- Independent for Hāʻena; the ship tour covers Hanalei but not the trail.
Why it's worth considering
It’s the way onto the Nā Pali coast on foot, and it’s open again.
Pride’s overnight gives you the hours a single-day call doesn’t.
The catch
Non-residents can’t walk up without a reservation — and the slots go quickly.
Cancellation costs 10%, and inside 48 hours there’s no refund.
Verify before you book
- Your Hāʻena slot, booked 30 days out
- The DLNR park notices that week
- Drive time back to Nawiliwili before dark
Kipu Ranch is private land just outside Līhuʻe, so it doesn’t wait on a state park to reopen.
Kipu Ranch Adventures runs two 3-hour off-road tours — the Waterfall Trail Expedition and an off-road ranch tour — from $190, for ages 9 and up.
They run Tuesday to Friday, which lines up with Pride’s Thursday arrival. NCL also sells a Kipu Ranch Zipline & Waterfall Swim at about 3.75 hours.
Book early. The ranch keeps a waitlist and phones people in order when a seat frees up.
- Time commitment
- 3 hours on the ranch’s own tours; about 3.75 hours on NCL’s zipline version.
- Getting there
- 235 Kipu Road, Līhuʻe — a short drive from the harbor.
- Cost
- From $190 per person on the ranch’s site.
- Ship or independent
- Either.
Why it's worth considering
It’s close, private and unaffected by the park closures — ranch land, not state land.
Mud, trails and waterfalls suit teens who’d be bored on a riverboat.
The catch
Minimum age is 9, and it’s bumpy — a ranch track, not a paved road, so think twice with a bad back.
Verify before you book
- The tour day (Tuesday to Friday only)
- Driver rules for your group
- What to wear; you will get dirty
An overnight’s most obvious use is the evening, and a luau is the classic way to spend it.
Luau Kalamaku is held at Kilohana, a restored 1930s plantation estate near Līhuʻe. NCL sells it at about 4 hours, from $209.99 per adult and $159.99 per child.
The listing describes a buffet with local specialties, the roast pig coming out of the pit, and a show of hula, fire dancing and storytelling about Polynesian voyaging.
Prefer to drive yourself? Smith’s Garden Luau on the Wailua River is $150 for adults, $45 for ages 7 to 13 and $35 for ages 3 to 6, starting at 5:00 p.m. through October and 4:45 p.m. from November to February.
Neither luau’s own pages told us which nights it runs. Match the night to your Thursday before you pay.
- Time commitment
- About 4 hours with the ship’s transfer.
- Getting there
- Kilohana is a short drive into Līhuʻe; the ship tour includes the coach.
- Cost
- From $209.99 adults, $159.99 children on NCL’s listing.
- Ship or independent
- Ship is simplest — it handles the after-dark ride back to the pier.
Why it's worth considering
It turns the overnight into a second experience instead of a night on board.
It suits most ages, and you’re sleeping at the pier afterwards.
The catch
It’s a big, polished production — a show, not a backyard party.
NCL notes uneven ground; collapsible wheelchair users need a companion.
Verify before you book
- The luau night matches your Thursday in port
- Drinks: NCL says 21+ with ID, and doesn’t say if they’re included
Waimea Canyon is the excursion Kauai is famous for. This season, don’t book it without asking hard questions first.
As of October 19, 2026, both state parks up there are shut. DLNR’s October 13 release keeps Kōkeʻe and Waimea Canyon closed “until further notice due to extensive damage,” and the road to Kōkeʻe is barricaded.
Yet NCL’s site still sold at least two canyon tours on October 19, including an 8-hour Best of Kauai trip from $299.99 that promises a high lookout over the canyon. Its page carries no closure note.
Lines sometimes reroute to lower viewpoints or swap stops — a substitute, not the canyon rim. Ask what this tour actually does this week — and whether you’ll get a refund if the canyon stays shut.
Want the canyon anyway? The helicopter routes fly over it.
- Time commitment
- About 5 to 8 hours on NCL’s canyon tours, when they run as listed.
- Getting there
- The west side via Waimea Canyon Drive. HDOT closed it above the lower junction on September 16, and we found no newer reopening notice.
- Cost
- Not worth quoting until the tours run as described.
- Ship or independent
- Neither, for now. Don’t try to drive past the closures.
Why it's worth considering
When it reopens, it’s the island’s signature view, and the state charges just $5 a person plus $10 to park.
The catch
As of October 19, 2026, the state park itself is closed.
Verify before you book
- DLNR’s Important Park Notices page the week you sail
- What your line’s canyon tour includes now
- Refund terms if the tour is changed

Nawiliwili with the ship or on your own
An overnight tilts things toward independent
With about 30 hours on the island on the reported winter schedule, the usual argument for ship tours — that the ship waits for them — matters less on Thursday. You aren’t sailing that night.
Friday is different. The reported 2 p.m. departure isn’t all-aboard — that’s earlier and set by the ship — so keep Friday short and local.
A rental car does most of the work
Payless, Budget and Avis run pier shuttles when a ship is in, according to a Hawaii rental broker — call the counter to confirm, since their own pages are silent. With a car, Hāʻena, Hanalei, Kipu and the heliports all come within reach.
Without one, transfers are the hard part. No bus schedule we read names a harbor stop, and taxi fares aren’t published.
Where the ship earns its price
The luau, for the after-dark coach back — and the Fern Grotto, if you don’t want to drive.
And any tour the closures might change — ask how the line handles a changed tour, because a private operator’s refund terms are its own.
Where this page runs out of prices
We found no published taxi fares, and NCL’s riverboat tour showed us only a Canadian-dollar price.
Everything else on this page — the helicopters, Capt Andy’s, Smith’s, Kipu Ranch, Hāʻena and NCL’s luau and canyon tours — is priced from its own listing in US dollars.
How each option compares in Nawiliwili
| Excursion | Lean ship excursion when… | Independent works when… |
| Kalapaki Beach | Not needed — it’s a walk | Yes — start at the gangway |
| Helicopter tour | You want the transfer handled and a held slot | You have a car or a short taxi ride to Ahukini Road |
| Nā Pali catamaran | If your line offers one that fits your hours | You book the Thursday sunset sail and the operator confirms it’s running |
| Wailua River and Fern Grotto | You’d rather not drive | You have a car and book Smith’s at $35 |
| Hanalei and Hāʻena | You want Hanalei without the trail | You hold a Hāʻena reservation and a rental car |
| Kipu Ranch | You want the zipline version | Most of the time — it’s close and publishes its prices |
| Luau Kalamaku | Most of the time — the coach back is the point | You have a car, don’t mind driving after dark, or pick Smith’s |
Short answer
On Pride of America, rent a car for Thursday and do one big thing: a helicopter flight, Kipu Ranch, or the north shore with a Hāʻena reservation. Book a luau for Thursday night once you’ve confirmed it runs then, and keep Friday to Kalapaki and the harbor shops. On a one-day call from another line, the Fern Grotto or a helicopter fits. Skip anything that depends on Waimea Canyon until DLNR reopens it.

Nawiliwili port logistics: berth, rental cars, closures and timing
From the pier
Ships dock at Nawiliwili Harbor, with Kalapaki Beach and the harbor shops on foot and Līhuʻe about 2 miles off — a ride, not a walk.
Full berth detail is on our Nawiliwili cruise port guide.
- Rental shuttles: Payless, Budget and Avis when a ship is in, per a broker; no desk on the pier
- Kauai Bus: $2.00 mainline fare since October 1, exact change, no Sunday service, no harbor stop named on the six routes we checked
- Taxis and Uber/Lyft operate; no published taxi fare
Pride of America’s hours
Pride of America’s reported schedule for sailings from October 3, 2026 through March 27, 2027 is Thursday 8 a.m. arrival, Friday 2 p.m. departure. Those hours come from Cruise Hive’s reporting on NCL’s guest notification; confirm your sailing’s itinerary before booking independent activities, and note all-aboard is earlier than departure.
Plan Thursday for the long trip and Thursday night for the luau. Keep Friday close to the harbor.
The closures, as of October 19, 2026
Closed, per DLNR on October 13: Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Parks, Kōkeʻe Road, all camping, the Kalalau Trail past two miles, Uluwehi Falls, and all other Kauai state parks, Polihale among them.
Open: Hāʻena State Park (from October 15, by reservation) and the Wailua River, with limits. The County’s October 8 bulletin still lists Salt Pond Beach Park closed.
Check dlnr.hawaii.gov’s Important Park Notices and the County’s recovery bulletins the week you sail — this list will age.
Weather and sea
Hurricane season runs to November 30. Lowell made Ruby Princess skip Kauai on September 22, so calls can still change.
Capt Andy’s says swells are more common in winter and spring. Helicopter routes depend on cloud over the mountains.
