Ponta Delgada excursions, from the free walk to the long day east
Ordered by the question every Ponta Delgada tour has to answer: will you actually see the thing you’re paying to see?
The town is a yes in any weather. The lakes are a maybe — Furnas and the boats sit somewhere in between, depending on cloud and swell.
Berth details, entry rules and what the port authority publishes are on our Ponta Delgada cruise port guide. Comparing the other stops on your crossing? Our transatlantic and repositioning cruises guide has them.
This one is a habit, not an excursion — and it decides whether the paid ones below are worth their fare.
São Miguel’s headline views sit on crater rims. Sete Cidades is seen from viewpoints like Vista do Rei, high above the lakes, and Byacores says heavy fog is common there.
Visit Azores is blunt about the rest of the island too: cloud and rain are possible in any season.
So the question on the morning of the call isn’t “which tour is best?” It’s “which end of the island can I actually see today?”
If the west is in cloud, Furnas in the east — hot springs, a garden, a stew dug out of the ground — works in almost any weather. A lake view doesn’t.
- Time commitment
- A minute or two on your phone before you leave the cabin.
- Getting there
- Live webcams for the viewpoints; Byacores points readers to SpotAzores for real-time conditions.
- Suits
- Everyone with an independent plan, and anyone deciding between two ship tours that go opposite ways.
- Ship or independent
- Neither — it’s information, and it costs nothing.
Why it's worth considering
A tour to Sete Cidades on a fogged-in morning can mean a long drive to look at white.
Checking first lets you swap direction while there’s still time to.
The catch
A ship tour booked weeks ahead won’t move with the weather. Ask your line what happens if the viewpoints are clouded — we found no published policy.
Mountain weather changes by the hour, so a clear webcam at 8 a.m. is a good sign, not a promise.
Verify before you book
- Live webcam conditions at the Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo viewpoints
- Your ship tour’s weather policy, if you’ve already booked one
This is the free half of the day — and on a short call it may be the whole of it.
Portos dos Açores puts the historic centre about 500 m from the cruise terminal. You walk out of Portas do Mar, cross the seafront avenue, and the Portas da Cidade are right there on Gonçalo Velho Cabral Square.
Those gates were built in the 18th century beside the old quay and moved when the avenue was laid out, per Visit Azores. They’re the photo almost everyone takes first.
For an indoor hour, the Carlos Machado Museum dates to 1876 and opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:30. It’s closed on Mondays — check the day before you plan around it.
On the edge of town, the Augusto Arruda pineapple greenhouses are the oldest in the Azores, from the 19th century, per the regional tourism portal. It doesn’t list hours, so confirm them before you set off.
- Time commitment
- As long as you like — no duration is published for a self-guided walk.
- Getting there
- On foot from Portas do Mar. The pineapple greenhouses are further out; a taxi is the easier option.
- Suits
- Short calls, budget days, and anyone who wants solid ground after several sea days.
- Ship or independent
- Independent. Lines sell town tours, but the centre is a short walk.
Why it's worth considering
It costs nothing, and it starts the moment you step off the ship.
It’s the one part of São Miguel where the weather barely changes the plan.
The catch
The museum is closed on Mondays, and we found no published ticket price on its own site.
No hours are listed for the pineapple greenhouses on the official tourism page — check before you take a taxi out.
Verify before you book
- Carlos Machado Museum’s ticket price and whether it’s open on your call day
- Current hours at the Augusto Arruda greenhouses
This is the view on the brochure: two lakes in one crater, one bluish and one greenish, with a village on the shore.
Visit Azores lists the Sete Cidades landscape among the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. One lookout, Vista do Rei, is named for King Carlos and Queen Amélia, who visited in 1901.
The ship versions are short and simple. Princess sells a 2-hour Crater Lakes Scenic Drive from $59.95 — with a wheelchair-accessible version — and a 3.75-hour tour with wine tasting from $119.95.
Holland America lists its Sete Cidades tour at about 3¾ hours from $99, ending with an Azorean wine and cheese tasting.
Independently, Shore Excursions Group lists a 3.5-hour Sete Cidades Nature Walk at $76.99. A taxi is the other route — though we found no published fare for it.
Whichever way you go, the weather decides what you see. A clear morning makes this a strong case for the fare — a fogged one turns it into a scenic drive, not a view.
- Time commitment
- 2 to 3.75 hours on Princess’s listings; about 3¾ hours on Holland America’s.
- Getting there
- By tour, taxi or hire car to the west of the island. It isn’t walkable from the port.
- Suits
- First-timers who want the classic view, and travelers with limited mobility on the accessible scenic drive.
- Ship or independent
- Either — the ship’s version is short and well suited to a mid-crossing call.
Why it's worth considering
It’s the image people picture when they hear “Azores” — the view most of the line tours here are built around.
The shortest versions fit easily inside a half-day call.
The catch
Fog at the rim can hide both lakes. We found no ship tour that publishes a weather refund.
Taxi pricing isn’t published, so agree a fare before you get in.
Verify before you book
- Viewpoint webcam conditions that morning
- What your tour does if the lakes are clouded over
- A taxi’s round-trip price and waiting time, agreed in advance
If one excursion here survives bad weather, it’s this one — you came for warm water and steam, and both show up in the rain.
Furnas is a valley of hot springs and fumaroles in the east of São Miguel. It’s also where cozido das Furnas is made — NCL’s listing describes the pots buried in the soil to cook.
Parque Terra Nostra is the other draw. Its own ticket page lists adults (18 to 64) at €17.00, ages 6 to 17 and over-65s at €14.50, and a family ticket at €57.00, with the thermal pool and jacuzzis included.
The garden opens daily, 10:30 to 16:30, and you can enter until about 30 minutes before closing. Online tickets open only 15 days ahead.
Two pool rules matter on a ship day. Stays are capped at 30 minutes, and the iron-rich water can stain light swimwear — the park itself says to wear something dark.
The ship tours run long. NCL’s Furnas Valley with Cozido das Caldeiras is 7.5 hours from $199.99 with lunch; Princess’s Terra Nostra Gardens & Furnas Hot Springs is 5 hours from $109.95.
- Time commitment
- 5 hours (Princess) to 7.5 hours (NCL, with the cozido lunch).
- Getting there
- By tour or taxi to the east of the island; Terra Nostra’s garden is in Furnas village.
- Suits
- Couples, families with kids old enough for a hot pool, and anyone whose call day is grey.
- Ship or independent
- Ship, on most calls — it’s a long way out, and the cozido lunch needs booking.
Why it's worth considering
It’s the most weather-proof full experience on the island.
Terra Nostra publishes its price and hours, so you can plan it precisely.
The catch
It eats most of a port day. On a short call, the full cozido version won’t fit.
NCL’s tour involves about 0.62 mile (1,000 m) of walking on uneven ground.
Verify before you book
- Your all-aboard time against a 5 to 7.5-hour tour
- Whether your ship tour includes Terra Nostra entry and pool time, or only the garden
- A dark swimsuit and a towel, if you plan to swim
Lagoa do Fogo is the island’s wildest-looking lake — a crater lake that Visit Azores says has been a nature reserve since 1974 and reaches 30 m deep.
It sits high in the centre of São Miguel, so it shares Sete Cidades’ weather problem — a clear town is no guarantee of a clear rim.
Access changes with the calendar. In 2026, the regional government ran its Vulcão do Fogo shuttle from August 1 to September 30, plus Easter school holidays, at €8 for non-resident adults.
During those windows the road between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água is closed to most vehicles. Tour companies and taxis are exempt.
Most transatlantic calls land in spring or autumn, outside that window — so a tour or taxi is how you get up there, not the bus.
Princess pairs the lake with Caldeira Velha and a tea plantation in a 4-hour tour from $109.95. For hikers, Shore Excursions Group lists a 6.5-hour Lagoa do Fogo Nature Hike.
- Time commitment
- 4 hours on Princess’s combined tour; 6.5 hours for the guided hike.
- Getting there
- Tour, taxi or the seasonal shuttle from Caldeira Velha or Casa da Água.
- Suits
- Active travelers and repeat visitors who have already seen Sete Cidades.
- Ship or independent
- Either; the shuttle option only works inside its published dates.
Why it's worth considering
It’s a protected nature reserve, a different kind of stop from the lakeside village at Sete Cidades.
The Princess version adds Caldeira Velha and tea, three stops in one half-day.
The catch
Cloud at the rim hides the lake as easily as at Sete Cidades.
The shuttle’s 2026 dates mostly miss the spring and autumn crossing seasons.
Verify before you book
- Whether the shuttle runs on your date, with its operator
- Viewpoint conditions on a webcam that morning
- The hike’s fitness level against your own
Gorreana is a family tea estate on the north coast that has grown tea since 1883. Its own site bills it as the oldest tea plantation in Europe.
Entry costs nothing — visits, tastings and factory tours are all free, and Gorreana says no reservation is needed.
You can walk the rows and visit the factory.
Its contact page lists 08:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 18:00 at weekends. Those read like opening hours — confirm before a weekend call.
Getting there is the cost, not the gate. It’s on the north coast, so you need a taxi or a tour; Princess folds a tea stop into its Lagoa do Fogo tour, and NCL’s Furnas tour includes a tea-factory tasting too.
- Time commitment
- No visit length is published; Princess and NCL fold it into longer tours.
- Getting there
- Taxi or tour to Maia on the north coast — not walkable from the port.
- Suits
- Budget travelers paying for a taxi only, and anyone who wants a quieter stop.
- Ship or independent
- Either; it’s free, so the only expense is getting there.
Why it's worth considering
A free, genuine working site, not a souvenir shop with a field behind it.
It pairs naturally with Lagoa do Fogo or the drive to Furnas.
The catch
On its own, the transfer costs more than the visit.
We found no taxi fare published for the run, so price the round trip before you go.
Verify before you book
- Opening hours for your call day
- A taxi’s return price and waiting time
This is the excursion with the shortest commute in port — you walk to it, not ride. Futurismo’s Ponta Delgada trip leaves from its shop in the Portas do Mar complex — the same waterfront your ship is tied up to.
Its own page lists €70 per adult plus a €4.20 online fee, half price for ages 6 to 12, and free under 6. It runs about 3 hours including check-in and the safety briefing, and it’s offered all season.
If no whales or dolphins turn up, Futurismo offers a free extra departure — useful on a long stay, close to useless on a one-day call.
Picos de Aventura, another Ponta Delgada operator, lists half-day whale watching from €37.45 and says you may encounter up to 27 species.
Ship versions are priced in dollars. Disney Cruise Line lists a catamaran trip at $119 for ages 10 and up and a RIB-boat trip at $129; Shore Excursions Group lists a 3-hour catamaran trip at $112.99.
- Time commitment
- About 3 hours, per Futurismo and Shore Excursions Group.
- Getting there
- On foot — Futurismo’s shop is in the Portas do Mar complex.
- Suits
- Couples, families with sea-tolerant kids, and anyone whose island tour would be clouded out.
- Ship or independent
- Independent works well here, since you walk to the boat.
Why it's worth considering
The operator publishes its full price and its no-sighting policy, so there’s little to guess.
Cloud on the crater rims doesn’t ruin a day at sea level.
The catch
Sea state decides the day, and a rough Atlantic can cancel trips.
The “free re-trip” policy only helps if there’s another departure before all-aboard.
Verify before you book
- Departure times against your all-aboard time
- The operator’s cancellation policy for bad sea conditions
- Children’s minimum age on your specific boat

Ponta Delgada with the ship or on your own
For town and the whale boats, go independent
The old town is a walk. Futurismo’s boats leave from Portas do Mar, and its €70 adult fare is published up front.
Neither needs a vehicle, so a ship tour adds convenience, not access.
For the island, the ship earns its price more often
Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and Furnas all need wheels — and with no published taxi fare for any of them, you’re negotiating on the day.
A ship tour also handles the timing — a fair point on Furnas, where Princess and NCL run 5 to 7.5 hours.
Weather cuts both ways
Book independently and you can switch from west to east on the morning if fog sits on the lakes. A ship tour booked weeks ago can’t move.
That flexibility is the strongest independent argument here — stronger than price.
Where this page runs out of prices
We found no published taxi fares from the terminal and no ticket price on the Carlos Machado Museum’s own pages.
Everything else on this page — Terra Nostra, the shuttle, the whale boats and the ship tours — is priced from its own listing. Ask for current rates before you commit.
How each option compares in Ponta Delgada
| Excursion | Lean ship excursion when… | Independent works when… |
| The old town and Portas da Cidade | Rarely — it’s a short walk | Almost always; it starts at the gangway |
| Sete Cidades | You want a short, fixed half-day with the timing handled | You can check the webcam and switch plans on the morning |
| Furnas and Terra Nostra | Most calls — it’s a long day and lunch needs booking | You have a long call and a taxi price agreed up front |
| Lagoa do Fogo | Outside the shuttle season | Inside the shuttle’s published dates |
| Gorreana tea plantation | As part of a Lagoa do Fogo or Furnas tour | You’ve priced a taxi there and back |
| Whale watching | You want the line to handle a delayed return | Usually — the boats leave from the terminal complex |
Short answer
Walk the town yourself, and book whale watching direct if it fits your hours — you’re walking to the boat either way. For the island, let the cloud decide: Sete Cidades on a clear morning, Furnas and Terra Nostra on a grey one. On a short call, a ship tour to either is the low-risk choice; on a long one, an agreed taxi fare buys you the freedom to change direction.

Ponta Delgada port logistics: berth, money, weather and the shuttle
From the terminal into town
Ships use Portas do Mar, where Portos dos Açores lists a 360 m berth for ships up to 340 m. It puts the historic centre about 500 m away.
Longer ships go to the commercial port, about 2 km from downtown per Visit Azores. Full berth detail is on our Ponta Delgada cruise port guide.
- Taxis, hire cars and coach parking are at the terminal, per Visit Azores
- No taxi fare from Portas do Mar is published in any source we checked
- Futurismo’s whale-watching shop is in the Portas do Mar complex itself
Money and tipping
It’s the euro. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, American Express much less so, and many taxis and small cafés may want cash.
Tipping is optional, not expected. About 5 to 10 percent for good restaurant service is common.
Weather and the crater viewpoints
Visit Azores says cloud and rain are possible throughout the year, with average air temperatures of roughly 16 to 26°C.
The high viewpoints are where it bites. Check a live webcam before you head for Sete Cidades or Lagoa do Fogo, and keep a sea-level or Furnas plan in your pocket.
Opening hours that shape the day
Terra Nostra: 10:30 to 16:30 daily, last entry about 16:00, closed December 25. Gorreana’s contact page gives weekday hours from 08:00 and weekend hours from 09:00, both to 18:00.
Carlos Machado Museum: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:30, closed Mondays. The 2026 Lagoa do Fogo shuttle season was two months, August and September, with an Easter-holiday spell on top.
