Charlottetown

Anne of Green Gables' home port — ships dock directly downtown, footsteps from Peake's Wharf. Green Gables itself is a real drive, not a walk-up option.

Charlottetown in brief

Charlottetown docks directly downtown, run by Port Charlottetown, an easy walk to Peake's Wharf, Victoria Row, and Province House, the birthplace of Canadian Confederation. Founders' Food Hall & Market sits about a 2-minute walk from the port itself.

Since a 2016–2020 expansion project, the port has had two berths capable of docking ships simultaneously — a real upgrade from the single-berth setup. On the busiest days, though, more ships can call than there are berths (documented 4-ship days have occurred), and on those occasions an extra vessel may tender rather than dock; this isn't the norm, but it's worth knowing it can happen rather than assuming a guaranteed dock every time.

Green Gables Heritage Place in Cavendish — the farmhouse that inspired L.M. Montgomery's novel — is about a 45-minute drive away; there's a seasonal public bus route but it's impractical for a single port call, so a taxi, rideshare, or tour is the realistic way to get there.

Commonly reached from

Charlottetown is a standard Maritime-circuit stop on Canada & New England itineraries that include Prince Edward Island out of Boston; some shorter Boston round-trips skip it for Halifax and Saint John alone. Seabound hasn't built a full Boston embarkation-port guide yet — a planned next phase, not a gap in this page.

Planning your Charlottetown day

There’s essentially one reason to book a tour in Charlottetown, and it’s forty minutes north. Everything else worth doing is a walk from the ship. The full guide is honest about who will love Green Gables and who will find it thin. This page stays at the port-identity level; that one goes deep. Booking a tour yourself? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator covers which of the two suits which kind of port day — and when the ship’s own tour is still the better buy.

Practical notes

Current as of September 13, 2026 Review periodically

No visa or eTA is needed for U.S. citizens arriving by cruise ship — just a valid passport, same as the other Canadian stops on this itinerary.

Port Charlottetown docks the large majority of the time thanks to its two-berth capacity since 2020; an extra ship on a documented multi-ship peak day may tender instead, though this is the exception rather than the rule. Separately, Charlottetown was hit hard by Hurricane Fiona in September 2022, which forced the port to forfeit 10 scheduled large-ship calls during peak season — the clearest documented weather-cancellation event for this port. Canadian dollars are standard; English is spoken throughout (French is concentrated in PEI's Évangéline/Wellington region, not near Charlottetown).
