CocoCay: the island where your fare already bought lunch

No town, no taxi, no way off. You walk off the ship onto Royal Caribbean's own island, and the only real decision is what's worth paying for.

CocoCay Cruise Port Guide: What's Free, What Costs Extra

Ships dock at a pier on CocoCay's north side, two at a time, and the island tram is free; Arrivals Plaza is about a five-minute walk from the ship. Included in your fare: South Beach, Harbor Beach, Chill Island, Cove Beach, Oasis Lagoon, Splashaway Bay and lunch at Snack Shack, Skipper's Grill and Chill Grill.

  1. What costs extra

Thrill Waterpark, Coco Beach Club (all ages), Hideaway Beach (18+), cabanas, zip line and balloon, priced in your Cruise Planner.

  2. How you pay

SeaPass covers it. The craft market takes SeaPass only until 2:30 p.m. — after that, US cash.

  3. No way off

No ferry, no road, no independent boat. Great Stirrup Cay is next door, and you can't get there from here.

CocoCay in brief

Most port pages start with how you get into town.

There is no town — not a small one, none. CocoCay is Little Stirrup Cay in the Berry Islands, and Royal Caribbean has held its lease since 1988.

Wikipedia puts it about 55 miles north of Nassau, under a mile long east to west and under 480 yards north to south.

That is a small island — and the $250 million redevelopment that reopened it as Perfect Day at CocoCay in 2019 filled most of it.

Ships dock. There is a pier on the north side and you walk off the ship onto the island, with no tender ticket and no queue for a boat.

That is the single biggest variable in any private-island day.

Here it falls the right way.

whatsinport.com puts the pier's limit at two ships at once. Two were alongside on July 11, 2026 — cruisefever's account of a rescue that day names Adventure of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas both in.

We lead with that because a pier is not a guarantee — and this one proved it in early 2026.

A winter storm dropped catwalks into the sea on the eastern side. Royal Caribbean's own statement puts it plainly: the island "experienced adverse weather over the weekend of January 30–February 1 and temporarily closed," and after assessments "the eastern side of the pier was unavailable for docking."

Two calls went elsewhere. Freedom of the Seas took Cabo Rojo. Celebrity Reflection took Freeport.

Then it was over. The same Royal Caribbean statement ends "operations have since resumed." Reporting of February 6 has Adventure of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas both alongside on February 5, 2026 — days of disruption, not months.

That matches the February 5 date in our CocoCay excursion guide.

Getting around the island is a tram, and the tram is free.

cruzely.com describes it running continuously all day, stopping at the major attractions, and being completely free to ride.

If it is not running, you walk — and the walk is short. The same source puts a full loop of the island at a good twenty minutes.

Celebrity's own CocoCay FAQ does publish the first leg. Its words: "The walk from the ship along the jetty, if you don't take the tram, is about five minutes to the Arrivals Plaza."

Past the plaza, nobody publishes a figure to any individual beach — Royal Caribbean does not, and we are not going to invent one.

What is free here is genuinely most of a day.

South Beach, Harbor Beach, Chill Island and Cove Beach are all in your fare, as is Oasis Lagoon, the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean.

So is Splashaway Bay, the kids' splash park, and so is lunch at Snack Shack, Skipper's Grill and Chill Grill — loungers and towels cost nothing either.

What costs money is the headline kit — Thrill Waterpark, Coco Beach Club, Hideaway Beach, the cabanas, the zip line and the helium balloon.

And not one of them has a published price. Royal Caribbean prices everything inside a personalised Cruise Planner — so the number you see is yours, not a rate card.

The figures that circulate are estimates, and they disagree badly. Our own guide's 2026 tracker puts a Thrill Waterpark pass at roughly $72 to $74; cruzely.com's 2025 write-ups say $80 to $120 and up.

Hideaway Beach lands at roughly $48 to $52 on the tracker and about $30 on cruzely. Coco Beach Club lands at roughly $144 against about $160.

Treat all of those as a range to budget against, not a price to hold anyone to.

Price your own sailing in Cruise Planner before you decide — the number is personalised, so anyone else's is theirs.

One correction is worth making before you book anything, because it is the mistake people actually make here.

Coco Beach Club is not adults-only. Royal Caribbean's own FAQ says "All areas of Coco Beach Club, including the premium beach experience, the clubhouse, the infinity edge pool and the cabanas, are open to guests of all ages."

Hideaway Beach is the 18-plus one. The same FAQ calls it "our ultimate beachfront paradise for guests 18 and up," and it costs roughly a third as much.

Book the one you actually want, not the one with the fancier name.

Your SeaPass card covers the island. "You'll need your SeaPass card to pay for things on the island," per the line's own FAQ — and the island market is the exception, taking SeaPass until 2:30 p.m. and US cash after that.

Drinks packages work ashore. Royal Caribbean says so itself: "Beverage packages purchased onboard or on My Royal Cruise will be active on the island."

Celebrity's own CocoCay FAQ extends All Included drinks and Wi-Fi to the island too.

You cannot leave. There is no gate, no road and no independent operator — the only thing that takes you off the island is Royal Caribbean's own boat trip to Lignum Vitae Cay.

Which of the paid upgrades earns its charge is a different question, and it belongs to our CocoCay excursion guide.

02

On foot from the ship

Free · All Day
The island tram

cruzely.com describes it as completely free to ride, running continuously through the day and stopping at the major attractions — the transport answer here, not a shuttle you pay for.

~20 Min · Full Loop
Walking the island end to end

cruzely puts a loop of the whole island at a good twenty minutes on foot. That is the honest fallback if the tram queue is long, and it is short enough that plenty of guests never ride at all.

~5 Min
Gangway to Arrivals Plaza

Celebrity's own CocoCay FAQ publishes it: "The walk from the ship along the jetty, if you don't take the tram, is about five minutes to the Arrivals Plaza." It is a line's own figure — and it stops at the plaza rather than at the sand.

Under 1 Mile
The whole island, east to west

Wikipedia's record gives the cay as less than a mile long east to west and less than 480 yards north to south — every beach, pool and paid club on this page sits inside that.

Two Ships
What the pier holds at once

whatsinport.com states a maximum of two ships docked at the island. Two were alongside on July 11, 2026, per cruisefever's report of a pier rescue naming Adventure of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas.

No Exit
Off the island, on your own

There is no ferry, no road and no independent boat. The one thing that leaves is Royal Caribbean's own Lost Cays Eco Hiking Tour to nearby Lignum Vitae Cay — a boat trip, not an exit.

03

What's nearby, broadly

Arrivals Plaza Chill Island Oasis Lagoon South Beach Harbor Beach Splashaway Bay Thrill Waterpark Hideaway Beach Coco Beach Club Captain Jill's Galleon The straw market Great Stirrup Cay

Every name on that list except the last is on the island itself, which is the whole point of a private-island page — the geography is the property line. Roughly half are free and roughly half are a charge, and the tram reaches all of them. Great Stirrup Cay is the odd one out: it is the next island over, it belongs to Norwegian, and you cannot get there from here.

04

Commonly reached from

CocoCay is exclusive to Royal Caribbean Group, so the list of ships that reach it is structurally short. Our own Caribbean cruise guide lists Royal Caribbean International as the regular caller; Celebrity Cruises joined in April 2024 and Cruise Industry News reported the island added to Celebrity Eclipse's itinerary on January 4, 2026. The ranked add-on decision lives in our CocoCay excursion guide, and the private island next door has its own page at Great Stirrup Cay.

Practical notes

Current as of September 21, 2026 Review periodically

This is private property in The Bahamas, and that is the whole entry rule.

Our own Caribbean hub states it plainly: no visa is needed, and there is no formal immigration process for guests going ashore.

You carry your SeaPass card, not your passport, and the island is not a port of entry in any sense you will experience.

The flip side is that the property line is also the boundary of your day — there is no gate to walk out of.

Money here is a card, with one exception.

Your SeaPass covers drinks, cabanas, passes and rentals island-wide. Royal Caribbean's own FAQ says it in one line: "You'll need your SeaPass card to pay for things on the island."

The island market of local Bahamian crafts takes SeaPass only until 2:30 p.m. After that it is US cash — so bring a few notes if souvenirs are on your list and you might browse late.

The Bahamian dollar is pegged one to one with the US dollar — which makes the exchange question a non-question on the island anyway.

Drinks packages carry ashore, which is not true at every private island in this region.

Royal Caribbean's own FAQ: "Beverage packages purchased onboard or on My Royal Cruise will be active on the island." That is the line's own position, not a traveller's.

Celebrity guests get the same treatment. Celebrity's own CocoCay FAQ says an All Included fare carries both the drinks and the Wi-Fi ashore — the Wi-Fi being the part people do not expect.

One national rule can override all of that. Cruise Industry News reported on May 10, 2026 that the Bahamian Ministry of National Security prohibits alcohol distribution during national elections.

Royal Caribbean's notice for May 12, 2026 said the restriction applies nationwide throughout the Bahamas. Non-alcoholic service continued ashore, and alcohol continued onboard.

It hit Disney's Lookout Cay a day earlier — which is what tells you it was a country-wide election rule rather than a Royal Caribbean decision.

Crowds are the real variable on a good-weather day.

Royal Caribbean set the island's expanded daily capacity at 13,000 guests, per Cruise Industry News's February 2023 report off the line's own fourth-quarter 2022 earnings call.

cruzely puts typical attendance nearer 9,000 to 10,000 a day. Either number is a lot of people on a cay under a mile long.

Loungers at the free beaches go early on a two-ship day — check how many ships are in before you decide the free beach is the relaxed option.

Weather is the risk a pier does not remove, and this island has the receipts.

A winter storm over the weekend of January 30 to February 1, 2026 put catwalks into the sea on the pier's eastern side. Royal Caribbean's own statement says the island temporarily closed. That side of the pier was unavailable for docking.

Two calls were lost: Freedom of the Seas diverted to Cabo Rojo, Celebrity Reflection to Freeport.

It was days rather than months. The same statement ends "operations have since resumed." Two ships were docking again on February 5, 2026.

Our own excursion guide also notes wind alone keeping ships off the pier afterwards — a dock lowers the odds of a cancelled call, it does not remove them.

There is no fallback here either. A skipped CocoCay call becomes a sea day — there is no second port on this island to switch to.

Accessibility is better documented by geography than by policy.

whatsinport.com describes most of the island as wheelchair accessible. The free tram is the reason the distances work.

What Royal Caribbean's own FAQ does not publish is a ride-by-ride accessibility policy for this island — so we are not going to summarise one.

Ask your line directly about the waterpark's slides, the zip line's harness and the balloon's platform — those are the three with real physical gates.

Ask before you sail, not at the gangway.

Season, weather and the hurricane question.

Our own Caribbean hub treats this island on the same November-to-April dry-season pattern as the wider region.

Bahamian hurricane season runs June to November and peaks in September. CocoCay has closed for storms before — including a week-long closure in 2019.

Plan the shoulder months on weather, not on price alone.

Winter brings the other problem, and it is wind rather than rain — the early-2026 disruption was a winter storm, not a hurricane.

Who lives here, and the one number that complicates the phrase 'no residents'.

That same guide describes the island as having no town and no residents — which is the practical truth for a visitor, whatever the census says.

Wikipedia records 38 residents at the 2010 census. We are not going to tell you who those 38 people were, because the source does not say.

What is not in dispute is that there is no independent economy here — no local operator, no taxi, no shop that is not Royal Caribbean's, and no boat you can hire.

All-aboard, and what nobody publishes about it.

Because the ship is docked all day, you can walk back aboard for lunch, a nap or air conditioning, and go out again — a real advantage over a tender island, and a free one.

We found no official all-aboard buffer from Royal Caribbean. Secondary sources describe 30 to 60 minutes before departure — and your Cruise Compass is the authority, not this page.

Whether guest movements on the island are tracked the way SeaPass tracks reboarding is not something we could confirm either way. Treat the posted time as firm regardless.

An earlier build of this page recorded royalcaribbean.com as unreachable; its FAQ pages load, they have been read, and the line's own positions are now cited to the line — all consulted September 21, 2026.

CocoCay FAQ

Does the ship dock or tender at CocoCay?

It docks. There is a pier on the north side of the island, and you walk off the ship onto the island rather than waiting for a tender ticket.

Wikipedia's record describes the pier as built on the north side specifically to let ships dock directly instead of using tenders. whatsinport.com puts its limit at two ships at once.

Two were alongside on July 11, 2026, per cruisefever's report of a pier rescue that names Adventure of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas.

Is the pier fully repaired after the 2026 storm damage?

Yes, and Royal Caribbean announced it in its own words.

The line's statement on the damage reads: "Perfect Day at CocoCay experienced adverse weather over the weekend of January 30–February 1 and temporarily closed. Following assessments, the eastern side of the pier was unavailable for docking, and select itineraries were adjusted. Guests were informed directly, and operations have since resumed." Two calls were diverted while it lasted — Freedom of the Seas to Cabo Rojo, Celebrity Reflection to Freeport.

Reporting of February 6, 2026 has Adventure of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas both docking on February 5.

Is there a tram at CocoCay, and does it cost anything?

There is, and it is free. cruzely.com describes the island tram as completely free to ride, running continuously through the day and stopping at the major attractions.

If the queue is long, walk. The same source puts a full loop of the island at a good twenty minutes, which is short enough that plenty of guests never ride it at all.

How far is it from the pier to the beach?

The first leg is published and the rest is not.

Celebrity's own CocoCay FAQ gives the jetty walk as "about five minutes to the Arrivals Plaza" if you skip the tram. Past the plaza, no line publishes a figure to any individual beach, and cruzely's twenty minutes for a full island loop is the closest thing to one.

The useful frame is the island's size rather than any single leg — Wikipedia puts the cay at under a mile east to west, so nothing here is far.

What is actually free at CocoCay?

More than most first-timers expect. South Beach, Harbor Beach, Chill Island and Cove Beach are all included, as is Oasis Lagoon, the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean.

Splashaway Bay, the kids' splash park, is free too, and so is Captain Jill's Galleon. Lunch at Snack Shack, Skipper's Grill and Chill Grill is complimentary, and so are loungers, towels and the tram.

A full day here can genuinely cost nothing extra — that is a real baseline, not a consolation prize.

What costs extra, and how much?

Thrill Waterpark, Coco Beach Club, Hideaway Beach, cabanas and daybeds, the zip line, the Up, Up and Away balloon, wave runners, lockers and the two new September 2026 add-ons all carry a charge.

Royal Caribbean posts no flat rate for any of them. Pricing lives inside the personalised Cruise Planner, so the number you see is yours rather than a published rate.

The circulating estimates disagree. Our own guide's 2026 tracker puts Thrill Waterpark at roughly $72 to $74 and cruzely's 2025 figures say $80 to $120 and up; Hideaway Beach lands at roughly $48 to $52 against about $30; Coco Beach Club at roughly $144 against about $160. Budget against the range, then price your own sailing.

Do drinks packages work on the island?

Yes, and the line states it itself. Royal Caribbean's own FAQ: "Beverage packages purchased onboard or on My Royal Cruise will be active on the island."

Celebrity guests get the same, plus one extra. Celebrity's own CocoCay FAQ carries All Included drinks ashore and the Wi-Fi with them — the Wi-Fi being the part people do not expect.

One national rule can override it. The Bahamian Ministry of National Security prohibits alcohol distribution during national elections, and that restriction closed island bars to alcohol on May 12, 2026 while onboard service continued.

Do I need cash at CocoCay?

Almost never. Royal Caribbean's own FAQ puts it in one line: "You'll need your SeaPass card to pay for things on the island."

The one exception is the island market of Bahamian crafts, which takes SeaPass until 2:30 p.m. and US cash after that — so bring a few small notes if souvenirs are on your list.

Is Coco Beach Club the adults-only area?

No, and this is the most common expensive mistake made at this island.

Royal Caribbean's own FAQ: "All areas of Coco Beach Club, including the premium beach experience, the clubhouse, the infinity edge pool and the cabanas, are open to guests of all ages." It is a family upgrade with a sit-down lunch.

Hideaway Beach is the 18-plus one — the same FAQ calls it "our ultimate beachfront paradise for guests 18 and up" — and it typically costs roughly a third as much. Pick on what you want, not on which name sounds more exclusive.

Can I leave the island or book with a local operator?

No. There is no town, no road off, no ferry and no independent tour operator on Little Stirrup Cay.

Every paid thing here is Royal Caribbean's own product at Royal Caribbean's own price — which makes the usual ship-versus-independent comparison meaningless. The real decision is paid upgrade against free beach.

The only thing that leaves the island at all is Royal Caribbean's own Lost Cays Eco Hiking Tour, a boat trip to nearby Lignum Vitae Cay that launched in September 2026.

Which cruise lines call at CocoCay?

Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises, both under Royal Caribbean Group. No other line calls here.

Our own Caribbean hub lists Royal Caribbean alone as the regular caller, which understates it slightly. Celebrity began calling in April 2024, and Cruise Industry News reported the island added to Celebrity Eclipse's itinerary on January 4, 2026.

Great Stirrup Cay, the island next door, belongs to Norwegian and is a separate destination you cannot reach from here.

How busy does it get?

Busy enough that it shapes the day. Royal Caribbean set the island's expanded daily capacity at 13,000 guests, per Cruise Industry News's February 2023 report off the line's own fourth-quarter 2022 earnings call.

cruzely puts typical attendance closer to 9,000 or 10,000 a day. On a cay under a mile long, that shows up as full loungers by mid-morning and a queue at the free slides.

Go early to whichever free area you want, or accept the paid one — those are the two honest options, not a third.
