Crystal Grace

Nobody at today's Crystal chose Symphony or Serenity — they were bought at auction, as they were. Grace is the first ship this company has ever specified for itself, and the first of three.

Read the twenty-five-year gap precisely: it is the gap between new ocean ships. Crystal Endeavor was a Crystal newbuild delivered in 2021, and she was sold to Royal Caribbean in the same wind-down and sails for its Silversea brand.

The first ships this owner chose

It is easy to miss what is unusual here, because a cruise line ordering ships is not news. The point is who is doing the ordering. Symphony and Serenity were built in 1995 and 2003 for a different company, and A&K Travel Group acquired them out of a court-ordered sale in June 2022 in whatever configuration they happened to be in. Every decision about those two hulls — where the restaurants sit, how wide the corridors are, how many decks there are — was made by someone else, decades ago.

Grace is the first time the current Crystal has had a say. The memorandum with Fincantieri was signed in June 2024, the option for a third ship exercised that November, financing for the first two closed in July 2025, and steel was cut at Marghera on 28 May 2026. Keel laying is scheduled for December, delivery for May 2028, and the maiden voyage leaves Civitavecchia on 11 June 2028.

The specification tells you what they wanted when nobody was stopping them: about 62,000 gross tons for 650 guests, all-suite and all-veranda, with wraparound verandas and an Owner's Suite — both firsts for a Crystal ocean ship. The wraparound promenade in the announcements is not a first: Crystal describes it as carrying over the one already on Symphony and Serenity. Note the direction of travel on the guest count: the 2024 announcements said 690 and everything since says 650. This is the same owner that removed 482 berths from the two ships it inherited, so the revision looks less like a rounding and more like a habit.

Symphony and Serenity were designed for somebody else. Grace was not.

From a memorandum to a keel

How firm is any of this, actually

Announced newbuilds slip, and some never get built, so the useful question is not what has been promised but what has been paid for and cut. On these three, quite a lot has.

Order, financing and construction milestones from Crystal's and Fincantieri's own releases · tonnage is given as about 62,000 because the two parties publish 61,800 and 62,000 · ships two and three have no announced names or delivery months · verified July 2026

So should you wait?

Wait if you are buying hardware. Grace will have wraparound verandas, a suite ladder designed as one rather than carved out of an existing deck plan, and none of the compromises that come from working inside a 1995 or 2003 hull. If new is what you are paying for, waiting until mid-2028 gets you something the current pair cannot become, no matter how thoroughly they are refitted.

Do not wait if you are buying the crew. Crystal's reputation was built on service continuity, and the great majority of the pre-2022 crew came back, senior officers included. That is aboard the two ships now. It will also be aboard Grace, presumably, but a brand-new ship spends its first season finding its feet in a way a rebuilt one with a returning company does not.

And weigh the space. Serenity offers 93.1 gross tons per guest. Grace, at about 62,000 tons for 650, works out around 95 — higher, but not dramatically. Anyone expecting the new ships to be a step change in roominess should look at that arithmetic first. The step change already happened, in Trieste, in 2023.

And read the solo and world-cruise position precisely. Symphony and Serenity carry an ocean-view single with no supplement. Crystal has said the new ships will have a single-occupancy category and that it will have a veranda — but has published nothing about whether it will be sold without a supplement, which is the part that decides whether it is a bargain. On world cruises: Serenity has 2027 and Symphony has 2028, and Grace's published first year does not include one.

One caution about 2028 inventory

Grace's first season is a Mediterranean summer out of Civitavecchia with two 34-night no-repeat-port itineraries, then a fall transatlantic by way of the Azores, Halifax and New York, then Canada and New England, then Bermuda and the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale.

Maiden and inaugural-season voyages on a small ship from a brand with a loyal following are the first things to disappear, and 2028 itineraries opened for booking on 28 April 2026. If the maiden voyage specifically is what you want, that is a conversation to have now rather than in 2027.

What is not on order, whatever you may have read

Crystal has repeatedly floated a 220-guest ice-class expedition ship. Nothing has been ordered, and we would not plan around it. The line did try to buy its own former expedition ship back in 2022 and lost her to Royal Caribbean, which put her into Silversea; a senior executive said in April 2026 that they "did purchase the plans," which is suggestive and is not an order.

River cruising is not coming back either. Crystal's own senior sales executive described the prospect in April 2026 as "98% no." The former Crystal river ships went to a different operator in early 2023 and are not returning.

What actually protects a deposit held for two years

Booking an inaugural season means handing money to a cruise line and waiting up to two years for the ship. That is a longer exposure than a normal booking, and this is the one brand where there is a documented record of what happens when it goes wrong. So the machinery is worth understanding before you decide. What follows is general information about how these protections work, not legal or financial advice, and the terms that bind you are the ones in your own card agreement, insurance policy and booking contract.

The regulation is real and narrower than its reputation. Anyone in the United States who arranges, offers, advertises or provides passage on a vessel with berths for fifty or more passengers that embarks them at a US port must file evidence of financial responsibility with the Federal Maritime Commission — insurance, a surety bond, a guaranty or an escrow account — covering at least 110 percent of unearned passenger revenue. Three things about it are routinely misunderstood. It is not a government guarantee; it is a private instrument filed with a regulator. It is capped by rule, with the ceiling adjusted for inflation every two years, and that cap is a pool shared by all claimants rather than a sum written to you. And since an April 2022 rule change, ancillary fees paid to the operator count toward the protected amount, which they did not when Crystal failed.

Now the part that is specific to this ship. The protection follows the voyage, not the brand. It reaches sailings that embark passengers at a US port — so of Grace's published first year, the Mediterranean season out of Civitavecchia, including the maiden voyage itself, sits outside it entirely. The Fort Lauderdale departures later in that season do not. If you are putting money down on an inaugural voyage specifically, this is the sentence on the page to reread.

Claiming is also not automatic, and not the court process people picture. Under the FMC's rules you must first claim from the operator under its own procedure; only if that is unresolved after 180 days, or the shorter period the operator specifies, or if it is denied, may you claim against the financial instrument. Any parallel insolvency runs on its own separate timetable, and Crystal's own 2022 case is the sobering benchmark: an interim distribution ordered in June 2026 at a little over thirty cents on the dollar on allowed unsecured claims. Plan for a partial recovery a long way out, not a delayed refund.

Three questions worth asking before you pay a 2028 deposit

Will a card dispute still be open when I need it? Probably not, and this is the assumption that catches people. Card-network rights for services not received are counted in months from the date the service was due, inside a further outer limit counted from the payment itself. A deposit paid in 2026 against a 2028 sailing is a long way outside the shape of that. Ask your issuer for its actual limits in writing before you pay — and do not treat a chargeback as the safety net on an inaugural-season booking.

Does my policy name financial default, and did I buy it in time? It is a named peril rather than part of ordinary cancellation cover, many policies exclude it, and those that offer it generally require purchase within a short window of your first deposit — often a couple of weeks — and will not cover a supplier already known to be in difficulty. Bought late, it does not attach.

Who is holding the money between now and 2028? In 2022 the answer decided which process you were in: the FMC route reached only bookings made directly with the line, while the Florida liquidation took claims from everyone. Ask where your deposit sits and get the answer before you send it.

None of this is a reason not to book an inaugural season, and we book them. It is a reason to book one deliberately. Seven banks underwrote these hulls after diligence none of us can replicate, which is real reassurance that the ships will be built — and no reassurance at all about a deposit in the meantime. Those are different questions and they are worth keeping apart.

If you asked us to pick

Best call for most people
Sail now, look at Grace later
The service is the product and it is already aboard. Grace will still be there in 2029 with a season's practice behind her.
Best reason to hold out
The wraparound veranda
Of everything on the specification, it is the hardest thing to retrofit into a 1995 or 2003 hull.
Best voyage on the new ship
A 34-night no-repeat-port itinerary
Two of them in Grace's first summer. On a 650-guest ship that is an unusually serious piece of programming.
Most useful number on this page
650, revised down from 690
Forty berths came out of a ship that does not exist yet, before a single plate was cut. Nobody has said why.
Least useful thing you will read elsewhere
The expedition ship
Floated repeatedly, never ordered. They bought the plans for one they lost, and that is all anyone actually knows.

Questions we get about the new ships

When does Crystal Grace enter service?

Delivery is scheduled for May 2028, the maiden voyage leaves Civitavecchia on 11 June 2028, and the christening is on the 8 July sailing from Barcelona. Separate the scheduled from the done: steel was cut at Fincantieri Marghera on 28 May 2026 and financing closed in July 2025, both of which have happened; keel laying in December 2026 and everything after it is a plan. Two more hulls are firm for 2030 and 2032, and no delivery month has been published for either.

Is my deposit protected if I book Crystal Grace for 2028?

Partly, and less than most people assume. Anyone selling passage on a vessel with berths for fifty or more passengers that embarks them at a US port must file evidence of financial responsibility with the Federal Maritime Commission covering at least 110 percent of unearned passenger revenue. But it is a private instrument rather than a government guarantee, it is capped, the cap is a pool shared by all claimants, and — the point that matters here — it follows the voyage, so Grace's Mediterranean sailings out of Civitavecchia, the maiden voyage included, fall outside it. Claiming is a two-stage process that starts with the operator and reaches the instrument only after 180 days unresolved or a denial. Two practical checks before you pay: get your card issuer's dispute limits in writing, because a 2026 payment against a 2028 sailing will likely sit outside them; and if you want cover for supplier failure, you would need a policy that names financial default, which generally has to be bought within a short window after the first deposit — check your insurer's terms.

Will the new ships be roomier than Serenity?

Somewhat, but less than you might assume. Crystal publishes 93.1 gross tons per guest for Serenity and calls it an industry-leading space-to-guest ratio. Grace at about 62,000 tons for 650 guests works out around 95 on the same arithmetic. That is an improvement rather than a transformation, because the big change in space per guest already happened in the 2023 refits, which took 482 berths out of the two existing ships.

What will Crystal Grace have that Symphony and Serenity do not?

Two things have been named specifically and both are hard to retrofit into an existing hull: wraparound verandas and an Owner's Suite, both firsts for a Crystal ocean ship. She is all-suite and all-veranda throughout. Be careful with the rest of the list: Crystal describes the wraparound promenade as carrying over what Symphony and Serenity already have, and the Casino de Monte-Carlo carries over too, so neither is new to the brand. Two things the current ships have that Grace has not been confirmed to match: a single category sold with no supplement — Crystal has announced a single-occupancy veranda category for the new ships but said nothing about the supplement — and a world cruise.

Is Crystal bringing back expedition or river cruising?

Neither is on order. Crystal has repeatedly floated a 220-guest ice-class expedition ship without ordering one; the line lost its former expedition ship to Royal Caribbean in 2022, which put her into Silversea, and a senior executive said in April 2026 that Crystal "did purchase the plans." On river cruising, the same executive put the odds at "98% no." The former Crystal river ships transferred to another operator in early 2023. Treat both as absent from any plan you are making.
