Fukuoka in brief
Fukuoka is Kyushu’s big city, and the port treats you like a commuter, not a tourist — in a good way.
There are two cruise wharves. Chuo Wharf has Berths 5 and 6 and the purpose-built cruise center; Hakozaki Wharf has Berths 4 and 5 and sits farther from the center.
Chuo is the one to hope for.
Its cruise center opened in May 2015, with up to 20 immigration booths and free Wi-Fi. Berth 6 is 330 meters long, and CruiseMapper reports the wharf was dredged and lengthened in 2018 for bigger ships.
Hakozaki’s berths are shorter, at 185 and 240 meters, and the port doesn’t publish how passengers get to town from there. If that’s your wharf, ask the ship before you plan anything.
Downtown is close, but not on foot.
Hakata Station is about 3 km from the port. Tenjin, the shopping district, is about the same — a 10-to-15-minute drive, not a stroll.
The practical move is the city bus. Routes 80 and 88 serve the Hakata Port International Terminal stop, and from Chuo Wharf that stop is a short walk.
Fukuoka rewards eaters more than sightseers.
Tonkotsu ramen is the signature here, and the evening yatai stalls along the river are the city’s best-known food scene. The catch is timing — many stalls open around 6 pm, and plenty of ships have sailed by then.
Which tours earn the fare, and which you can do with a bus ticket, is what our Fukuoka shore excursion guide works through. Check it before you book Dazaifu through the ship.
From the wharf into Fukuoka
The main cruise wharf, with the cruise center, immigration hall and free Wi-Fi. Tourist information and currency exchange are listed here too.
The secondary wharf, farther out. Check with the ship for a shuttle or taxi plan from here.
From the Chuo Wharf cruise center to the Nishitetsu stop at Hakata Port International Terminal.
It runs between the terminal stop and the 2A stop in front of Tenjin Solaria Stage.
Between the terminal and the F stop in front of the Hakata Station Center Building.
Taxis are an option. Expect about 15 minutes to Tenjin or Hakata Station by car.
What's nearby, broadly
By the Japan Tourism Agency’s count, Canal City is about 10 minutes from the berth by road, and so are Tenjin and Ohori Park. The castle ruins in Maizuru Park are about 15 minutes, or a 15-minute walk from Tenjin.
Fukuoka Tower sits out west by Momochi, about 20 minutes away. Hakozaki-gu is the near one — about 2 km, five minutes by car.
Dazaifu Tenmangu is the outlier, not a city sight at all. It’s about 16 km inland, roughly 45 minutes by coach, and it’s the stop most ship tours are built around.
Commonly reached from
Fukuoka turns up on Japan and Korea itineraries, often paired with Nagasaki and Busan, which the port puts about 200 km away. In October 2026 alone, CruiseMapper lists calls from Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Azamara, Carnival, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Holland America and Silversea — and the port says it handles the most international cruise passengers in Japan. Planning your Fukuoka day
This page sticks to the wharf, the buses and the money. The tours have their own page.

Best Fukuoka shore excursions
Dazaifu by train or by coach, Tenjin by city bus, the tower, the castle park and the yatai. Here’s which ones earn the money.

Yen, and don’t count on dollars.
The currency is the Japanese yen. Holland America’s own excursion notes say most vendors here don’t take US dollars — bring yen or a credit card.
The cruise center has had foreign-exchange machines and a Bank of Fukuoka cash machine, open when ships are in. That detail dates from the terminal’s opening, so treat it as likely, not certain.
Buses lean cashless.
Nishitetsu, the bus operator, said in late 2024 that about 90% of its bus fares were already paid by IC card or other cashless methods. It has trialed cash-free routes taking IC cards and contactless credit cards.
Carry coins anyway, as a backup, not a plan — a cash-only stall won’t care what’s in your phone.
Taxis wait, but the fare isn’t posted.
Ask the driver for an estimate before a longer run — Dazaifu, say, which is about 16 km inland.
The US advisory is Level 1 — normal precautions.
The State Department rates Japan Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in an advisory issued May 15, 2025. It flags typhoons from summer into fall and warns that some common US prescriptions, Adderall among them, are illegal in Japan.
US citizens visit Japan visa-free for up to 90 days. On a ship designated for Japan’s cruise landing permit, the line arranges it — sightseeing only, back aboard before each departure.
Festival dates change the city.
Hakata Dontaku runs May 3 and 4 and draws more than 2 million people, with the parade route about 1.8 km from the port. Hakata Gion Yamakasa runs July 1 to 15. On those dates, expect crowds and slower roads, not a quiet port day.

Fukuoka FAQ
Can I walk from the cruise ship into Fukuoka?
Not really to the center. Hakata Station is about 3 km away, and Tenjin is a 10-to-15-minute drive.
What you can walk is the seven minutes to the city bus stop at Hakata Port International Terminal.
Does Fukuoka tender?
Not normally. The port lists docking berths at Chuo Wharf and Hakozaki Wharf, and ships tie up alongside.
Which wharf will my ship use?
Usually Chuo Wharf, which has the cruise center. Hakozaki Wharf takes some calls and is farther out.
Your line can tell you — ask, because it changes how you get to town.
Which bus goes from the port to Tenjin?
Nishitetsu route 80, about 15 minutes between Tenjin Solaria Stage and the Hakata Port International Terminal stop. Route 88 goes to Hakata Station in about 20.
Is there a cruise shuttle in Fukuoka?
It depends on your line. Some lines run their own, so check your daily program; otherwise, take the city bus or a taxi.
How far is Dazaifu from the cruise port?
About 16 km, or roughly 45 minutes by coach. On your own, it’s a bus to Tenjin and then the Nishitetsu train, with a change at Futsukaichi.
Do I need cash in Fukuoka?
Some. Cards and IC cards go a long way, but some yatai stalls are cash only, and most vendors won’t take dollars.
Is Fukuoka safe for cruise passengers?
The State Department rates Japan Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in its May 15, 2025 advisory.
Its main flags are natural hazards — typhoons and earthquakes — and the rules on prescription drugs.
