Grand Cayman in brief
Most Caribbean port pages open with where the ship ties up. This one cannot.
Grand Cayman has no cruise berth at all. Not a short one, not a shallow one. None.
Every ship that calls anchors off George Town, and local tenders run passengers in to one of three landings on Harbour Drive — the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, the North Terminal and the South Terminal.
The Royal Watler is the main one, at roughly 19.2953 north, 81.3842 west on OpenStreetMap's record. Which landing you draw varies with the day and the number of ships in — nobody publishes the allocation.
All three are within a few minutes of each other on foot — one port guide puts the North Terminal about three minutes from the Royal Watler.
The tender operation is bigger and better drilled than most people expect, and it is still the bottleneck.
Caribbean Marine Services runs it. A 2019 Cayman Compass report put the fleet at 15 boats carrying 250 to 300 people each, with Captain Renell Sosa saying the ship-to-shore run "lasts about four minutes" — his own words, on his own boats.
Sources stretch that. A Cayman-based visitor guide says about ten minutes, and our Grand Cayman shore excursion guide carries four to ten — a range, because the anchorage moves.
The ride was never the problem. The queue is.
The same 2019 report has Sosa estimating about two hours to land roughly 4,000 passengers off one Carnival Vista call, and reckoning six or seven tenders could move 4,000 to 5,000 people in two and a half to four hours — his estimate, not a published service standard.
Those are seven-year-old figures for a port now taking more ships — treat the first hour ashore as the boat's, not yours.
The return queue is the one that costs people their ship.
A local guide says be back at the terminal at least 30 minutes before all-aboard. On a tender day that is the floor, not the plan.
Ninety minutes at the landing is the number we use, and the number our own guide uses. It is ours, not the port's — nobody official publishes a buffer at all.
Note the last tender time from your daily program. It is not the same thing as all-aboard — and it is the deadline that actually binds.
The harbour is open water, which is why this call gets cancelled outright.
Nothing shelters the anchorage from a winter nor'wester — nothing at all, on that side of the island.
In early February 2026 the National Weather Service went from a marine watch to a full marine warning, with offshore waves forecast at roughly nine to 15 feet and, the following day, in excess of 13. Cayman Compass quoted Cayman Cabana's CEO saying the island lost "an entire week of business from the cruise ships that missed Cayman," after about a month of rough weather.
No one publishes a skip rate for this port — not the Port Authority, not the lines. We are not going to manufacture one.
When George Town is too rough but the ship still comes, the fallback is Spotts.
The Port Authority lists a Spotts Bay Alternate Cruise Facility on Shamrock Road, on the south coast — and that is all it publishes about it. Ships tender in there instead, and every meeting point you arranged on Harbour Drive stops lining up.
Message any independent operator before port day and ask what they do if the ship shifts — that is a two-line email, not a hedge you can buy.
The pier question itself has an answer, and it is political rather than technical.
Caymanians voted cruise berthing down on April 30, 2025, and the Elections Office's own certified count is worth reading in full — NO 11,973, or 64.15% of ballots cast; YES 5,417, or 29.03%; REJECTED 1,273, or 6.82%; 18,663 ballots in total.
You will see 68.85% quoted as the margin. That is the No share of the valid votes only, and the certificate does not publish an overall turnout percentage at all — so any figure you see for turnout came from somewhere else.
The referendum was non-binding. It has held anyway.
What has moved since is smaller than a pier. Cayman Compass reported in November 2025 that Deputy Premier Gary Rutty was considering a tender landing dock in West Bay, "possibly taking tenders into the West Bay dock," plus a George Town waterfront property as a further landing point — landings, in both cases.
That is tender infrastructure, not berthing. Plan on tendering for the life of your booking.
Traffic is climbing regardless. Rutty gave 1.1 million passengers across 363 calls in 2025, 1.3 million across 449 in 2026, and an early estimate of 1.7 million and more than 500 calls for 2027 — a minister's figures, in a newspaper, where the Port Authority publishes statistics of its own.
Which tour survives a tender day, and which one eats it, is the job of our Grand Cayman shore excursion guide.
On foot from the ship
Caribbean Marine Services runs 15 boats at 250 to 300 people each, per a 2019 Cayman Compass report, whose tender captain put the run at about four minutes. A Cayman visitor guide says about ten — the ride is short either way, and the wait is the variable.
The landings sit in central George Town on Harbour Drive. daily.ky puts the duty-free strip and the Cayman Islands National Museum at under five minutes' walk. This is one of the few tender ports where you step off into the town itself.
Inland along Harbour Drive, then right on Fort Street, per daily.ky. The depot is at 68 Edward Street, open Monday to Saturday 6am to 7pm and closed Sundays and public holidays — which rules out a bus day on a Sunday call.
daily.ky says roughly 2 miles and advises against walking it — no continuous sidewalks, no shade. cruisehive says 2.8 miles and about an hour on foot. Both say take the taxi, at roughly CI$20 / US$25 for up to four and 10 to 15 minutes.
A 2023 port guide places the shore-snorkel entry about 300 yards south of Paradise restaurant, walking distance from the terminals. Seas rough enough to disrupt tenders will spoil these sites too — the same swell, the same day.
The Port Authority's own listing gives the Spotts Bay Alternate Cruise Facility on Shamrock Road, on the south coast — no facilities, no distances and no trigger conditions alongside it. What you need to know is that it is not George Town.
What's nearby, broadly
The first three of those are a walk from the landing, and the rest are a fare and a decision. Seven Mile Beach and West Bay are a short hop; Pedro St. James is about 20 minutes; Crystal Caves, the Botanic Park and Rum Point sit 40 minutes to an hour out along the North Side. Stack two of the far ones onto a tender day and you have built a late-return problem, not an itinerary.
Commonly reached from
Grand Cayman is a Western Caribbean fixture, with Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, Disney, Princess, Holland America and MSC all regular, per our own Caribbean cruise guide. Itineraries carrying it very often also call at Cozumel and Roatán, which is worth knowing before you book two snorkel days in one week. The ranked tour decision for this port lives in our Grand Cayman shore excursion guide.

Money here is two currencies that behave like one, until they don't.
The official tourism position is that US currency is used interchangeably with the Cayman dollar — interchangeably, which is doing some work in that sentence. Change often comes back in CI$.
A September 2026 reading of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority's retail rate gave CI$1.00 = US$1.227, while shops commonly count US$1 as CI$0.80 — a gap of roughly a quarter, in the shop's favour.
We could not re-surface a retail rate table on cima.ky's public pages on September 21, 2026, so treat that figure as carried forward rather than freshly confirmed.
The practical version is simpler. Pay in US dollars, check whether a price is CI$ or US$, and expect the difference to be about a quarter.
Entry is the easy part, and the State Department's Cayman page is short on drama.
The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory, and our Caribbean hub states the operative fact: visa-free for US citizens.
The advisory adds that a passport is needed at entry and exit, no vaccinations are required and there are no currency restrictions — a short list, for once.
It is Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, issued May 21, 2026 — read on the department's current advisory path, not the legacy one that still serves years-old text. That is the lowest rating it gives.
One rule here has arrested actual tourists, and it is not a drug rule.
It is illegal to carry firearms or ammunition when arriving, departing or travelling through the Cayman Islands, in the advisory's own words.
People have been arrested, charged and fined over a single bullet, a spent casing, or spent ammunition set into jewellery or a keychain — a casing, not a cartridge.
Empty your day bag before you tender in. Check any bullet-style jewellery, and leave it aboard.
Cannabis importation is banned outright, prescriptions included. That is stricter than most of the region.
Getting around is a government fare table and a bus depot.
Taxis wait at the terminals. The Public Transport Unit publishes a Taxi Destinations and Fare Chart and runs the CI:GO Taxi Fare App — which prices a ride before you take it.
The chart we could read is headed "Prices (USD) up to 4 passengers" — a per-vehicle table rather than a per-head one. Read again on September 21, 2026, caymantransport.ky would not render that table at all, so the heading is carried forward rather than freshly confirmed.
It does not carry a cruise-terminal row we could find. A Cayman visitor guide puts the Seven Mile Beach ride at roughly CI$20 / US$25 for up to four, 10 to 15 minutes, and at least one local guide describes fares as per person instead — which is the difference between $25 and $100 for a family of four.
Settle that before the door closes, not after — check the fare on CI:GO, and ask out loud whether it is per person or per car.
Public buses leave from the depot on Edward Street, about four minutes and 350 metres from the landing — closer than the taxi rank feels.
daily.ky names routes WB1 and WB2 for Seven Mile Beach at CI$2 / US$2.50, every two to five minutes on weekday mornings, with no service on Sundays or public holidays.
Our own guide gives the government's average fare at about CI$2, rising to CI$5 beyond Hutland Road toward Rum Point — the one figure here that rests on that guide's reading and nothing else.
caymantransport.ky publishes its bus route map as an image and no readable fare text, so every bus number and price on this page is a guide's, not the government's. Check service for your date.
Traffic drives on the left. There is no rideshare answer we would stand behind — sources disagree on whether any service operates at all, so do not build a plan on it.
Clearance and the shape of the day.
Customs clears the ship before anyone goes ashore. The Port Authority's own cruise page says passengers and crew are pre-cleared in advance of arrival, with operators filing a Pre-Arrival Notification no later than 24 hours before the ship is due.
That pre-clearance does not apply to anyone arriving by ship and leaving the islands by air — a narrow case, and an expensive one to discover late.
Ships typically sit here from around 7 or 8 in the morning to between 3 and 5 in the afternoon, which a Cayman guide frames as a seven-to-nine-hour window ashore — subtract the two queues yourself.
Season, swell and the honest risk.
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. That is the season everyone plans around.
The one that actually closes this port is winter. Nor'westers between December and March push swell straight into an unsheltered harbour, and February 2026 produced a marine warning, forecast waves of nine to 15 feet and a week of missed calls — a week, in the middle of high season.
If Grand Cayman is the reason you picked the sailing, weigh that before you prepay anything ashore — the ship refunds its own tours, and nobody else refunds yours.
Read an independent operator's cancellation terms before you hand over a deposit. Ask what happens if the ship goes to Spotts, and what happens if it does not stop at all.
Accessibility is the thinnest section on this page, and the gap is the port's, not ours.
No official source publishes anything about boarding a Cayman tender with a wheelchair, a walker or a cane — not the Authority, not the operator, not the tourism board.
The State Department page says accessibility is common in George Town and limited on public transportation — that is the whole of the public record.
Start with your cruise line's access team rather than the port. Cayman Crystal Caves does not permit wheelchairs, walking aids, crutches or strollers on its terrain — and we found no current accessibility statement from Pedro St. James at all.
One last thing about the landing you leave from.
Three terminals means three places a tender can be waiting, and on a multi-ship day they are not interchangeable — note which one you landed at, and which ship name is on the boat.
Then go back earlier than feels necessary. The queue is the part nobody can publish.

Grand Cayman FAQ
Does Grand Cayman have a cruise pier?
No. There is no cruise berth in George Town, and every ship that calls anchors offshore and tenders passengers in.
Caymanians voted cruise berthing down in a referendum on April 30, 2025. The Elections Office's own certified count gives NO 11,973 and YES 5,417 — 64.15% and 29.03% of the 18,663 ballots cast, with 1,273 rejected, or 6.82%.
The 68.85% figure you will see quoted is the No share of valid votes only, and the certificate publishes no overall turnout percentage at all. The vote was non-binding and has held anyway.
Plan on tendering for the life of your booking.
Where do the tenders land?
At one of three landings on Harbour Drive in central George Town: the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, the North Terminal and the South Terminal.
Which one you use depends on the day and how many ships are in. They sit within a few minutes' walk of each other, with one port guide putting the North Terminal about three minutes from the Royal Watler.
Note which one you landed at — on a multi-ship day the boats are not interchangeable.
How long is the tender ride in Grand Cayman?
Short. The tender captain quoted by Cayman Compass in 2019 said the ship-to-shore run "lasts about four minutes," a Cayman visitor guide says about ten. Four to ten is the honest range — the anchorage moves with the weather.
The ride is not what costs you time. The same 2019 report estimated about two hours to land roughly 4,000 passengers off a single Carnival Vista call, with six or seven tenders able to move 4,000 to 5,000 people in two and a half to four hours.
Those figures are seven years old — and the port is busier now than it was.
How much time should I leave to get back to the ship?
More than the 30 minutes a local guide suggests as a minimum — that is the floor, not the plan.
Ninety minutes at the landing is the number we use. Nobody official publishes a buffer for this port, so it is ours rather than the Authority's.
And work to the last tender time in your daily program, not to all-aboard. They are different times.
How often does Grand Cayman get skipped?
Nobody publishes a rate, and we are not going to invent one.
What is documented is the mechanism. The anchorage is open water with nothing sheltering it, and in early February 2026 the National Weather Service moved from a marine watch to a full marine warning, with offshore waves forecast at roughly nine to 15 feet and, the next day, in excess of 13.
Cayman Compass quoted Cayman Cabana's CEO saying the island lost "an entire week of business from the cruise ships that missed Cayman," after about a month of rough weather. Winter nor'westers are the risk here — not hurricanes, whatever the season chart suggests.
What happens if my ship tenders at Spotts instead?
Your day moves to the south coast, and anything you arranged in town stops lining up.
The Port Authority lists a Spotts Bay Alternate Cruise Facility on Shamrock Road and publishes nothing else about it — no facilities, no distances, no trigger conditions. Ships shift there when George Town is too rough.
Message any independent operator before port day and ask what they do if the ship moves. Ship-sold tours handle it for you — that is most of what you are paying for here.
How do I get from the tender landing to Seven Mile Beach?
By taxi or by bus, not on foot. daily.ky puts the beach at roughly 2 miles and advises against walking, over roads without continuous sidewalks and with no shade; cruisehive says 2.8 miles and about an hour.
A taxi runs about CI$20 / US$25 for up to four people and 10 to 15 minutes, per daily.ky. The Public Transport Unit's own fare chart is headed "Prices (USD) up to 4 passengers," but at least one local guide describes fares as per person instead — settle that before you get in, and price the ride on the government's CI:GO app.
Buses run from the Edward Street depot, about four minutes from the landing, on routes WB1 and WB2 at CI$2 / US$2.50. There is no service on Sundays or public holidays.
How long is Seven Mile Beach really?
Just over 6.3 miles, or 10.1 kilometres, which is a little under the name but a long way past what you will walk.
It runs directly north of George Town, so the near end starts close to town and the resort strip sits further up. Public access points include West Bay Public Beach, Governor's Beach and West Bay Cemetery Beach, per the official tourism site — three of them, and they are not equally easy to reach.
Pick your access point before you get in the taxi, not when you arrive.
Can I walk into George Town from the tender landing?
You already are in it. The landings are on Harbour Drive in the centre of town, which makes this one of the easier tender ports in the Caribbean once you are ashore.
daily.ky puts the duty-free strip and the Cayman Islands National Museum at under five minutes on foot, and the Edward Street bus depot at about four minutes and 350 metres.
The reef is walkable too — Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto sit about 300 yards south of Paradise restaurant, on a 2023 port guide's reading.
What does the US travel advisory say about the Cayman Islands?
Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, issued May 21, 2026. That is the lowest level the State Department publishes.
It names two specific things. Emergency medical services may be limited at popular tourist locations such as the Stingray City sandbar, and it is illegal to carry firearms or ammunition when arriving, departing or travelling through the islands — people have been arrested and fined over a single bullet or a spent casing, including ammunition used in jewellery.
Cannabis importation is banned outright, prescriptions included.
Do I need Cayman dollars?
Generally no. The official tourism site says US currency is used interchangeably with the Cayman dollar, though change often comes back in CI$.
A September 2026 reading of the Monetary Authority's retail rate gave CI$1.00 = US$1.227, with shops commonly counting US$1 as CI$0.80. We could not re-surface a retail rate table on cima.ky when we looked on September 21, 2026 — so treat that as carried forward rather than freshly confirmed.
The habit that saves you money is asking which dollars a price is in.
Is the tender operation accessible for a wheelchair user?
We cannot tell you, and no official source can either.
Nothing the Port Authority, the tender operator or the tourism board publishes addresses boarding a tender with a wheelchair, a walker or a cane. The State Department page says only that accessibility is common in George Town and limited on public transportation.
Start with your cruise line's access team before you sail. Ashore, Cayman Crystal Caves does not permit wheelchairs, walking aids, crutches or strollers — and we found no current accessibility statement from Pedro St. James.
