Halifax in brief

Halifax is the single most-called Canadian port on this circuit, docking directly at Pavilion 20 or 22 in the Halifax Seaport district, run by the Port of Halifax, adjacent to Pier 21 — the actual pier through which more than a million immigrants and refugees entered Canada between 1928 and 1971, and now the National Museum of Immigration, about a 5-minute walk from the terminal.

The Halifax Citadel and waterfront boardwalk are an easy, mostly flat walk from the terminal — the boardwalk itself is essentially at the dock, while the Citadel is roughly 1.2–1.5 km (about 15–20 minutes) up a sustained incline; many visitors taxi up and walk back down. Peggy's Cove, the region's iconic lighthouse and the signature excursion here, is about 45 minutes away by car or tour.

This page covers the port itself — what's genuinely on foot, what needs a taxi — not the specific paid excursions, which belong in their own guide as this cluster grows.

On foot from the ship

<5 Min Walk
Pier 21 Immigration Museum

About 75 meters from the terminal — worth the stop even if Peggy's Cove is the day's main plan.

~10–12 Min Walk
Waterfront Boardwalk

Flat and fully walkable — Historic Properties and the Maritime Museum sit along it.

~15–20 Min Walk
Halifax Citadel

A genuine uphill walk (roughly 1.2–1.5 km); many take a taxi up and walk back down.

Halifax is the most complete walk-off city stop in this cluster — the boardwalk, Pier 21, and Historic Properties are all genuinely on foot, with Peggy's Cove as the one paid excursion most visitors add on.

Halifax is called on almost every Canada & New England itinerary out of Boston, regardless of line or sailing length. Seabound hasn't built a full Boston embarkation-port guide yet — a planned next phase, not a gap in this page.

Planning your Halifax day

Halifax ties up on the boardwalk, so a lot of the ship’s tour menu here is a coach to somewhere you could have walked. The full guide says which ones those are, then makes the case for the one trip that genuinely can’t be done on foot. This page stays at the port-identity level; that one goes deep. Booking a tour yourself? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator covers which of the two suits which kind of port day — and when the ship’s own tour is still the better buy.

Practical notes

Current as of September 13, 2026 Review periodically

No visa or eTA is needed for U.S. citizens arriving by cruise ship — just a valid passport, same as the other Canadian stops on this itinerary.

Halifax docks directly with no tender step and generally low weather-cancellation risk; the one documented exception is Hurricane Fiona (September 2022), which forced a 2-day suspension of cruise berthing, though the port sustained minimal damage and resumed normal operations quickly. Treat this as a low-probability, hurricane-season (Sept–Oct) risk rather than a routine one. Canadian dollars are standard; cards are the reliable payment method, since USD acceptance in shops is inconsistent.
