Hamburg in brief
Hamburg runs three cruise terminals and one overflow berth, and the gap between them is bigger than the map suggests.
Start by finding your terminal — it’s on your cruise documents, not something you can guess from the ship.
Cruise Gate Hamburg assigns berths by sailing. On October 25, 2026, for example, its schedule put Mein Schiff Relax at HafenCity and MSC Preziosa at Steinwerder, while AIDAluna is due at Altona on November 7.
HafenCity is the city-center one.
It opened in spring 2025 inside Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, a mall-and-hotel complex at Überseeboulevard 7. The U4 subway station is in the same district, and the main station is two stops away.
From this terminal the Speicherstadt warehouse district and the Elbphilharmonie are close enough to walk to — CGH calls it “just a short walk” but doesn’t give a distance.
Altona is the west-side terminal, beside a ferry pier.
It opened in 2011 at Van-der-Smissen-Straße 5 and takes ships up to 300 meters. The public ferry stop Dockland is next door, so the city is a boat ride away, not a hike.
Steinwerder is the big-ship terminal, and it’s in the port, not the city.
It handles ships over 340 meters and more than 8,000 passengers a call. You reach town by bus, by a weekday ferry or through the Old Elbe Tunnel on foot — or by taxi, which is what most people with suitcases will want.
Baakenhöft, a temporary terminal for smaller ships staying overnight, still appears on CGH’s list — you’re unlikely to see it on a big-ship sailing.
All three main terminals now supply shore power, which becomes mandatory for compatible ships in 2027.
Which tours earn the fare, and which are a boat ride you could buy at the pier yourself, is what our Hamburg shore excursion guide sorts out. Read it before you book through the ship.
From the terminal into town
In Westfield Überseequartier by the Speicherstadt, with berths of 345 and 230 meters. The U4 Überseequartier station is in the district, and the taxi rank is on Level -2.
The U4 reaches Hauptbahnhof in two stops and Jungfernstieg, on the Alster, in one. That’s the easy way in with or without luggage.
Cruise Center Altona sits beside the Dockland ferry stop. HVV ferry 62 runs east to the Landungsbrücken piers; bus 111 stops in front of the terminal for Altona station.
From the Steinwerder Cruise Terminal stop to U/S Elbbrücken, per CGH. On Saturdays the last bus back from the terminal leaves at 6:01 pm.
From Argentinienbrücke, about a 450-meter walk from the terminal, to Landungsbrücken. It runs Monday to Friday only, about every 40 minutes, 5:30 am to 9:30 pm.
CGH lists none for any terminal. Lines can run their own transfers (Cunard does for guests who fly with it), so ask yours. Otherwise it’s public transport or a taxi.
What's nearby, broadly
Read that list as two clusters. The first half — Speicherstadt, Elbphilharmonie, Miniatur Wunderland, HafenCity — sits around the HafenCity terminal.
The St. Pauli end, with the Landungsbrücken, the Fish Market and the Reeperbahn, is closer to Altona.
From Steinwerder, everything on it starts with a river crossing, not a stroll. The Old Elbe Tunnel brings you up at the Landungsbrücken, and the tunnel walk itself takes about 10 to 15 minutes — plan the stretch to its south entrance on top of that.
Commonly reached from
Hamburg is a homeport first, for Norway and the Baltic. If your cruise sails from Kiel instead, that guide covers Germany’s other big homeport, and Warnemünde is the Baltic coast call nearby. Cruise Gate’s schedule for late October 2026 shows AIDA, TUI’s Mein Schiff, MSC, Princess, P&O, Hurtigruten, Phoenix Reisen and Hapag-Lloyd ships — and calls run on into December. See the region on our Northern Europe cruises hub, or open Hamburg on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.

Embarking? Work backward from your terminal.
From the airport, about 13 km out, the S1 reaches the main station in about 25 minutes, and for HafenCity you change there to the U4.
For Altona, stay on the S1 to Landungsbrücken and take ferry 62 to Dockland.
Steinwerder with suitcases is taxi territory. The terminal has a luggage service and a car-rental desk, and the building opens only around ship calls — so don’t turn up hours early.
Parking is paid by the hour, not a cruise flat rate, at HafenCity.
As of April 2025, the Überseequartier garages charged €3.00 to €3.50 an hour with a daily cap of €39.
Use the Osakaallee entrance, which is open around the clock. Altona and Baakenhöft have shuttle and valet parking.
Taxis run on the meter, not a flat port fare.
No port fare is published. CGH links to Hamburg’s taxi dispatch numbers and a fare calculator instead of quoting a price.
Going to or from Steinwerder through the Old Elbe Tunnel, you pay the tunnel toll — and the tunnel is closed to cars at weekends.
Euros, and carry some cash.
Germany uses the euro. Holland America’s own Hamburg listing warns that most vendors won’t take US dollars and that public restrooms cost 50 cents to €1 in coins.
One transit system covers trains, buses and harbor ferries.
The hvv runs the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses and harbor ferries such as line 62. Single and day fares rose about 5.4% on January 1, 2026, and online tickets are 7% cheaper — check the price in the hvv app.
The Hamburg CARD, from €12.90, adds free hvv travel to discounts at 150-plus attractions. One card covers an adult and up to three children aged 6 to 14.
The US advisory is Level 2 — increased caution.
The State Department’s Germany advisory names terrorism as the risk and lists tourist sites, transport hubs and markets among possible targets.
Germany is in the Schengen Area, so US passport holders visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180. The EU’s Entry/Exit System is running; ETIAS isn’t yet.

Hamburg FAQ
Which cruise terminal will my ship use in Hamburg?
It depends on the sailing. Cruise Gate Hamburg uses HafenCity, Altona and Steinwerder, plus a small overflow berth at Baakenhöft.
Your documents name it. CGH’s expected-vessels page lists terminals too, though times can change at short notice.
Can I walk into Hamburg from the cruise ship?
From HafenCity, yes — the Speicherstadt and the Elbphilharmonie are close by, and the U4 is in the same district.
From Altona, the ferry is easier. From Steinwerder, plan on a bus, ferry, taxi or the tunnel walk.
Does Hamburg tender?
No. Ships dock at the terminals on the Elbe.
How do I get from Hamburg Airport to the cruise terminal?
Take the S1 to the main station, about 25 minutes, then the U4 two stops to Überseequartier for HafenCity.
For Altona, ride the S1 on to Landungsbrücken and take ferry 62 to Dockland. For Steinwerder, a taxi is simplest with bags.
Is there a shuttle from Steinwerder into the city?
Cruise Gate doesn’t list one. Bus 256 runs to Elbbrücken in about 22 minutes, and on weekdays ferry 73 crosses to Landungsbrücken in about 12.
Ask your line whether it runs its own transfer.
How much is a taxi from the Hamburg cruise port?
There’s no flat port fare. Taxis are metered, and through the Old Elbe Tunnel you pay the toll on top.
Where can I park for a Hamburg cruise?
At HafenCity, the Überseequartier garages charged €3.00 to €3.50 an hour, capped at €39 a day, as of April 2025.
Steinwerder has its own bookable car park, and Altona and Baakenhöft offer shuttle and valet parking.
Is Hamburg safe for cruise passengers?
The State Department rates Germany Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, because of terrorism.
It names tourist sites, transport hubs and markets as possible targets — so stay alert in crowds, not anxious.
