District 1 or the riverbank

The city nights, in Ho Chi Minh City

On most lines your ship waits in the delta, so no window here will show it. Choose for the transfer and the city instead — Uniworld houses its guests at the Park Hyatt, Aqua's coach leaves from The Reverie, and the other four are about Saigon itself.

How we chose

How we chose these six

Most ships board at My Tho, so a river view here buys you the Saigon River, not your ship. We started with the hotels the lines and their transfers use.

Then the ratings: a MICHELIN Key or Forbes Four-Star where one exists. Three of these six hold a Key. Two colonial classics stay on for history, and one hotel sits on the river itself.

None of it is ranked by price. Where your line's coach starts matters more.

Park Hyatt Saigon

GrandUniworld's hotel, with a MICHELIN Key

Uniworld's own pre-cruise hotel for Mekong Jewel guests.

The grand pick, in the centre. On Uniworld you'll be here anyway — on any other line, it's the address we'd book first.

The Reverie Saigon

GrandAqua's coach leaves from the door

On Nguyen Hue and Dong Khoi, in the old centre.

The night before an Aqua Mekong sailing. The shared coach to My Tho leaves from here between 12:30 and 1:30 pm, so you walk downstairs to it.

Kept on the list for its colonial character. A river-facing room isn't promised, so ask for one when you book.

Opened in 1880 at 132–134 Dong Khoi; Graham Greene stayed in Room 214.

History over polish. The city's best-known colonial hotel, for travellers who'd rather sleep inside the story than in the newest room.

Embarkation day

From the hotel to the ship

  1. 01

Find out where the coach starts

On most lines the transfer to the delta is part of the package and leaves from a hotel the line chooses. Ask which one before you book a different hotel for the last night.

  2. 02

Leave the bags, keep the morning

Aqua boards at 3:30 pm and Uniworld drives guests to the ship after lunch. Leave luggage with the concierge and give the morning to the city.

  3. 03

Allow for traffic on arrival day

Tan Son Nhat is only 7–8 km out, but at rush hour or in heavy rain the drive takes 45 minutes to an hour. Don't plan a same-day transfer tight against a landing.
