Horta in brief
Horta sits on Faial, one of the Azores islands, with Mount Pico rising to 2,351 m across a channel of about 7 km — the highest peak in Portugal.
The port turns up on transatlantic and repositioning itineraries, a short stop in the middle of a long crossing, not a destination cruise on its own.
Your ship’s length decides how you get ashore.
The cruise terminal has a 270 m berthing line, room for ships up to about 230 m, and a water depth of about 8.75 m, so a ship that fits ties up and you walk off.
Bucket List Guides says ships too big for the pier anchor in Horta Bay and tender to the marina, a ride it puts at about 5 minutes. The port’s own page doesn’t cover tendering, so treat that as the likely case for a larger ship, not a promise. CruiseSheet adds that very busy days can also push a ship to anchor. Your daily program will say.
A second, commercial pier sits about 2 km from downtown, with berthing lines of 150 m and 200 m. One guide mentions a port shuttle for it, and we found no fare or schedule.
Once you’re ashore, the harbor is the attraction. Yacht crews paint their boat names and years on the sea walls, and Peter Café Sport faces the marina, which opened in June 1986 with 300 berths.
The volcanoes are the other half of the day, and they need wheels — a taxi, a rental or a tour. Our Horta shore excursion guide sorts the options by the clock.
On foot from the ship
A 270 m berthing line for ships up to about 230 m, per the port’s own page — larger ships may anchor and tender instead.
About a third of a mile along the harbor, which guides put at 5 to 10 minutes to the main square and the marina.
One secondary guide cites about 5 minutes from ship to marina, though the same guide says afternoon swells can make the return rougher.
The port page lists tourist information, public toilets, restaurants, a bar, parking and taxis.
The working quay sits farther from town, and one guide says walking through the working port is restricted, so it mentions a shuttle.
A guide says you can cross the town on foot in under 20 minutes — wear shoes that handle a hill.
What's nearby, broadly
The first six tags are harbor and town, a few minutes from the pier, and the Regional Museum has a photographic exhibition on the Capelinhos eruption that works as a primer for the drive out.
The Caldeira is about 20 minutes by car, per Visit Faial, while guides give Capelinhos as 15 to 30 minutes by road, depending on who you ask.
Pico is the view across the water. Passenger ferries run from Horta to Madalena on Pico, but a ferry plus a mountain is a big ask for a typical port day.
Commonly reached from
Horta appears on transatlantic and repositioning sailings between the Americas and Europe. Norwegian Dawn’s 15-night Jacksonville–Lisbon crossing, departing April 4, 2027, lists the port, and Silversea has 2027 sailings listed with calls here. Our map card also names Phoenix Reisen. Taxis wait at the terminal, and ride-hailing isn’t an option.
Guides say taxis queue outside the terminal gate and work fixed-rate tourist circuits. Bucket List Guides quotes EUR 80 to 100 per car (up to four people) for a 3- to 4-hour run through the Caldeira and Capelinhos.
That’s a secondary source, and the same guide gives other figures elsewhere — no official tariff turned up in our search. Agree the price before you get in — and the stops, and the return time.
Uber and Bolt don’t operate on Faial, per the same guide, and the local bus schedule may not suit a port day.
The big sights keep their own hours.
The Capelinhos Interpretation Centre opens 9:00 to 18:00 daily from April 1 to October 31, then Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 to 17:00, from November to March. Adults pay EUR 10, last admission is an hour before closing, and weather can close it.
The Scrimshaw Museum above Peter Café Sport opens Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, and Saturday until 16:00, with Sunday closed. Admission is EUR 3.50.
Weather turns fast.
One guide gives about 15 to 25 °C (60 to 78 °F) in the main season and calls it four seasons in a day, and Visit Faial’s advice for the Caldeira is blunt: if the top of the island is in cloud, pick another day.
Pack a waterproof layer for any call — even a sunny pier doesn’t mean a clear crater.
Prices are in euros.
The sources here print prices in euros, and we couldn’t confirm card acceptance at each venue — so carry a little cash for the museum and the cafe, not just a card.
The US advisory is Level 1.
The U.S. Embassy in Portugal’s homepage banner reads Level 1: Exercise Normal Caution. The Azores are part of Portugal and the Schengen area, and the EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at external borders since April 10, 2026, while ETIAS is not in operation and the EU hasn’t announced a start date.
Check travel-europe.europa.eu before you go, since those rules can change after we publish.

Horta FAQ
Where do cruise ships dock in Horta?
At the cruise terminal, which has a 270 m berthing line and takes ships up to about 230 m, while a separate commercial pier sits about 2 km from downtown. Your daily program will name the berth.
Does Horta tender?
Ships longer than the terminal’s stated limit of about 230 m may anchor in the bay and tender, according to Bucket List Guides. The port’s own page doesn’t describe tendering, so ask your line — the answer decides your margin.
How far is the walk into town?
The port page puts downtown at 500 m, and guides say 5 to 10 minutes on foot to the main square and marina — a stroll, not a transfer.
Is there a shuttle?
One guide mentions a port shuttle for the commercial pier, with no fare or schedule given. From the cruise terminal you shouldn’t need one — it’s a walk-off.
How much is a taxi in Horta?
Taxis work fixed-rate tourist circuits, and one guide quotes EUR 80 to 100 per car for a 3- to 4-hour Caldeira and Capelinhos loop. No official fare turned up, so agree the price first — before the car moves.
How far are Capelinhos and the Caldeira?
Visit Faial says the Caldeira is about 20 minutes by car, and guides give Capelinhos as 15 to 30 minutes by road — a drive, not a walk.
Do I need a visa?
US citizens don’t need a visa for short stays in the Schengen area, and the EU Entry/Exit System is in operation at external borders. ETIAS is not in operation, with no announced start date, so check travel-europe.europa.eu.
When do cruise ships visit Horta?
Calls cluster in spring and fall on transatlantic crossings. Listed 2027 dates run from March 26 to December 13, though that list doesn’t name the ships — check your own itinerary.
