Ilulissat in brief
Ilulissat is the iceberg stop on a West Greenland cruise — and the ice is the reason to be here.
The town sits on Disko Bay, where the Ilulissat Icefjord meets the sea — Holland America puts the fjord at about 55 km long.
At its head, the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier sheds the icebergs that drift out past town. HX calls it the largest producer of icebergs in the Northern Hemisphere.
Expect a tender, not a gangway onto a pier.
MSC says ships may anchor offshore and bring guests in by tender boat. It also warns the tender may not suit anyone with reduced mobility or balance issues — worth raising with the ship before the day.
Small expedition ships may work differently, with Zodiacs, not tender boats. Ask on board how your ship is landing guests, and where.
The ice is a walk away, not a step away.
The trails all meet near the Icefjord Centre, at the old heliport on the edge of town. That’s roughly a 15-to-20-minute walk from the center.
From there, a wooden boardwalk heads past the old Inuit settlement of Sermermiut to the fjord’s edge, about 2.6 km round trip.
Some lines run a shuttle to the Centre — Seabourn’s included at-leisure tour does, for one.
Town is small, so plan the day around the ice, not the shops.
The Ilulissat Museum fills the house where polar explorer Knud Rasmussen was born in 1879. Zion’s Church dates from the 18th century, and the harbor is where the iceberg boats leave.
Which boats, flights and guided walks earn their price is the job of our Ilulissat shore excursion guide. Read it before you pay for anything with wings.
Ashore from the tender
MSC’s port page says guests come ashore by tender boat. Allow for the queue on the way in and on the way back.
The trails meet at the old heliport, now the Icefjord Centre’s end of town. Count that walk twice in your day.
A wooden walkway from the Icefjord Centre past the Sermermiut settlement site to the edge of the fjord.
A longer marked trail from the power plant toward the fjord, ending at the Icefjord Centre. Plan on roughly 1½ to 2 hours.
Now the Ilulissat Museum. One ticket also gets you into the Ilulissat Art Museum.
Ilulissat Event, for one, meets passengers at the pontoon by the whale jawbones at the harbor, 15 minutes before departure.
What's nearby, broadly
Everything on the first two rows of that list is on foot from town — some of it a fair walk. Ilimanaq is a settlement about 15 km away across the water, so it means a boat. The Sermeq Kujalleq glacier front sits at the head of the fjord and Eqi Glacier about 80 km off — on a cruise call, the flightseeing tours are what reach them.
Commonly reached from
Ilulissat is a Disko Bay call on West Greenland and Arctic expedition itineraries, usually in a short summer window — Visit Greenland says most cruise ships visit between mid-July and mid-August. CruiseMapper lists Silversea’s Silver Wind, Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic Inspiration and AIDAsol for July 2027, and Seabourn, HX, Polar Latitudes and MSC all publish Ilulissat tours or port pages. If your sailing touches Iceland, our Reykjavik cruise port guide covers that end, and Nuuk is the capital further south. See the whole coast on our Greenland cruises hub, or open Ilulissat on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.
Planning your Ilulissat day
Boats into the ice, small-plane and helicopter flights, kayaks and guided walks each get weighed in the excursion guide. Here, the job is getting ashore and out to the trails.
Booking a tour yourself? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator explains which booker suits which kind of port — and on a tender call this remote, why the ship’s own tour often makes more sense.

Bring Danish kroner, and some of it as cash.
Prices in Ilulissat are in Danish kroner (DKK) — the boat and flight operators quote in them.
Visit Greenland tells cruise guests to carry cash, since some places won’t accept every card.
Agree any taxi fare with the driver first.
If you’re counting on a ride out to the trailheads, ask the ship’s shore desk the day before. Otherwise, plan to walk it — with shoes for rock, not pavement.
Opening hours move with the season.
The Ilulissat Museum posts its summer and winter hours on Facebook, not on a fixed published timetable. The Icefjord Centre sends visitors to isfjordscentret.gl for hours and tickets.
Seabourn’s included tour lists both a Centre entry and a UNESCO fee. Neither amount is listed — ask the ship, or check isfjordscentret.gl.
The US advisory is Level 2 — increased caution.
The State Department rates Greenland Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, in an advisory issued October 28, 2024. The reasons are extreme weather and limited emergency services, with remote rescue that could take days.
It recommends travel, medical and evacuation insurance. The US Consulate in Nuuk offers no routine consular services — the embassy in Copenhagen handles them.
No visa for a US passport, but Greenland isn’t Schengen.
US citizens visit visa-free for up to 90 days, with a passport valid at least 90 days past departure. Greenland sits outside the Schengen Area, so a Schengen visa doesn’t cover it.
Summer is short here.
In Ilulissat, the midnight sun lasts until roughly the end of July — after that, evenings dim. Ilulissat Event’s boat season runs from May 15 to October 15, so the ice trips outlast the cruise window.
