Juneau in brief
Juneau's downtown cruise terminals sit within a few blocks of the city center — a genuine walk-off port under normal conditions, with tendering used only on the rare high-volume day when more ships are in port than there are berths available.
The Mount Roberts Tramway starts literally at the dock on South Franklin Street, run by Goldbelt Inc. — no transport needed to reach it. Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau's signature sight, is a different story: it's about 13 miles from downtown, reached by tour shuttle (roughly 20 minutes) or public bus, the latter still requiring a mile-and-a-half walk from the nearest stop.
This page covers the port itself — what's at the pier and what's a real trip — not the specific paid excursions, which belong in their own guide as this cluster grows.
On foot from the ship
The tramway’s base station sits right on South Franklin Street at the pier — no transport required. The tram itself has been closed since late April 2026, with no reopening date announced, though the base station stays open.
Juneau's compact downtown core is a genuine walk-off experience from any of the downtown berths.
Not walkable — a tour shuttle or public bus (plus a mile-and-a-half walk from the nearest stop) gets you there.
What's nearby, broadly
Juneau splits cleanly into a walk-off downtown day and a real excursion out to Mendenhall Glacier — the tramway would normally be the one exception that’s both a proper attraction and right at the pier, and it’s closed for now.

Juneau is a common call on Alaska sailings out of Seattle and Vancouver. Seabound hasn't built a full Seattle or Vancouver embarkation guide with this level of detail yet — a planned next phase, not a gap in this page.
Planning your Juneau day
Juneau is the rare Alaska port where spending almost nothing is a real plan, and the full guide makes that case with the numbers behind it — including the public bus that reaches Mendenhall Glacier for a few dollars. This page stays at the port-identity level on purpose; that one goes deep on which bookings actually earn their price. Booking a tour yourself? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator covers which of the two suits which kind of port day — and when the ship’s own tour is still the better buy.
Best Juneau shore excursions
Whales, a glacier you can reach on a city bus, and a helicopter landing on the icefield — three price bands, ranked honestly.

Tendering here is capacity-driven, not weather-driven — it only happens on days with more ships in port than downtown berths, which makes Juneau's cancellation risk lower than a true weather-exposed tender port. Individual excursions like floatplane tours or whale watching can still be weather-delayed on their own.
Port calls can run long here relative to some Southeast Alaska stops — some itineraries schedule evening activities like dinner cruises or extended whale watching, so check your own sailing's hours rather than assuming a standard daytime-only call.

Juneau FAQ
Do ships dock or tender at Juneau?
Dock, under normal conditions — the downtown terminals are a genuine walk-off port. Tendering only happens on high-volume days when more ships are in port than there are berths.
Is the Mount Roberts Tramway at the dock?
Yes — its base station is right on South Franklin Street at the pier, no transport needed. As of September 2026 the tram itself is closed. Goldbelt suspended rides after an incident at the end of April 2026 and its own site still says the tram is “temporarily closed as assessments continue,” with no reopening date given. The lower terminal at the pier is still open — coffee, shopping, and carving and weaving demonstrations — so it’s still worth the two-minute walk. Just don’t plan your day around the ride, and check before you sail.
Can I walk to Mendenhall Glacier?
No — it's about 13 miles from downtown. A tour shuttle (roughly 20 minutes) or the public bus, plus a mile-and-a-half walk from the nearest stop, are the real options.
Is Juneau prone to weather cancellations?
Less than a true tender port — tendering here is driven by how many ships are in port, not the weather. Individual excursions like floatplane tours can still be weather-delayed.
