Ketchikan in brief

Ketchikan runs two separate cruise facilities. The downtown berths are operated by Ketchikan Dock Company — a consortium of Holland America, Princess, Royal Caribbean, and a local landowner — under a long lease with the City of Ketchikan, and they open directly onto downtown: Creek Street and the totem-pole displays are a few minutes' walk. The newer Mill at Ward Cove, on the former pulp-mill site about seven miles north, runs a complimentary shuttle into town.

Both are dock facilities — no tender involved either way, which makes Ketchikan one of the more reliable calls in this cluster from a weather-cancellation standpoint, even though it's genuinely one of the rainiest towns in the country.

Misty Fjords National Monument, the region's signature scenery, isn't a walk or even really a drive — it's typically a floatplane or boat tour, and that's the piece of a Ketchikan day most worth booking ahead rather than deciding on the pier.

Planning your Ketchikan day

Which of Ketchikan’s two docks your ship uses changes the entire day, and the full guide is built around that split rather than treating the port as one place. This page stays at the port-identity level; that one goes deep on what to book from each berth. Booking a tour yourself? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator covers which of the two suits which kind of port day — and when the ship’s own tour is still the better buy.

Practical notes

Current as of September 13, 2026 Review periodically

Which dock your ship uses — downtown or Ward Cove — changes the shape of your day meaningfully: one puts you in town instantly, the other adds a shuttle ride first. Check your specific ship's berth before assuming a walk-off morning.

Ketchikan's weather is the real planning variable here, not the dock: it's among the wettest towns in the U.S., which mainly affects floatplane-based Misty Fjords tours rather than the dock itself, since both cruise terminals are genuine docks, not tender landings.

Ketchikan FAQ

Do ships dock or tender at Ketchikan?

Dock — at either the downtown berths or the newer Mill at Ward Cove facility, about 7 miles out. No tender is used at either.

Can I walk to Creek Street from the ship?

Yes, if your ship uses the downtown berths — it's a few minutes' walk. From Ward Cove, a free shuttle covers the roughly 7-mile trip into town instead.

Is Misty Fjords walkable or a short taxi?

Neither — it's typically a floatplane or boat tour, and worth booking ahead rather than deciding once you're on the pier.

Does weather cancel Ketchikan port calls?

Rarely, for the dock itself — both terminals are genuine docks, not weather-dependent tender landings. Ketchikan's heavy rainfall mainly affects floatplane-based excursions like Misty Fjords.
