Lerwick in brief
Lerwick is a stone-built harbor town on the east side of Shetland’s Mainland, and it works as the main pick-up point for tours across the islands.
The port expected 147 cruise arrivals in 2026, carrying about 130,000 passengers, between April and November. That’s a lot of ships for a town this size — expect company on the quay.
Most of what you came for sits in a few streets.
The old waterfront has the Lodberries, which Shetland.org ties to the TV series. Fort Charlotte is an artillery fort dating to the mid 17th century, per Celebrity.
The Shetland Museum and Archives and the arts venue Mareel are on Shetland.org’s list too.
The headline sights are farther out. Jarlshof, at the southern tip, is about 25 miles south on the Mainland, and Mousa Broch needs a boat. For those you need a tour or a car — a bus won’t do it neatly.
From the ship to the center
The port lists this pier at 1.2 km from the town center, and it takes ships up to 275 meters long. Public toilets aren’t listed near it, so use the shuttle rather than hiking in wind and rain.
The port puts Holmsgarth 5 about 1 km from the center, with a 163-meter length limit on that berth. CruiseMapper describes a longer Holmsgarth North jetty, 800 meters, which the port’s own table doesn’t list — ask your line which berth you’ve got.
The Port Authority runs a complimentary coach between these berths and the town center. The port adds a welcome leaflet and traditional music on the quay, and a meet-and-greet team answers questions. No timetable is published on the pages we read.
Bigger ships anchor. The port lists the inner anchorage at 0.3 nautical mile, about 5 minutes by tender, and the south anchorage at 1.3 nautical miles, 10 to 15 minutes. Landing pontoons sit in a sheltered dock beside the center.
These are the two spots the port names for public toilets. Celebrity adds that Victoria Pier has a welcome pavilion, wifi and a taxi rank.
The port page describes no cruise terminal. The port says tour pick-up and drop-off areas sit beside all the berths, so look for your coach number rather than a building.
What's nearby, broadly
The first five are in the center, and the museum is a 10 to 15 minute walk from Victoria Pier by a third-party guide’s estimate. Fort Charlotte is free and open daily from April to September, 9:30 to 5:30.
Clickimin Broch is farther. One guide puts it at about 25 minutes each way on foot from town, so it suits a long call, not a short one — and it’s a walk, not a ride.
The last four are a drive. Shetland’s cruise itineraries put a typical south Mainland shore excursion at 2.5 to 4.5 hours, and Mousa adds a boat crossing of about 15 minutes.
Commonly reached from
Lerwick turns up on British Isles and Northern Europe itineraries. Nearby calls include Kirkwall in Orkney, Invergordon on the Scottish mainland and Tórshavn in the Faroes. Our Cruise Atlas card lists HX Expeditions, Holland America and Viking as seasonal callers, with AIDA, MSC, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and SeaDream as occasional ones. In October 2026, CruiseMapper shows HX, AIDA and Holland America calls. The wider picture is on our Northern Europe cruises hub, and Lerwick has its own card on the Cruise Atlas.
Planning your Lerwick day
This page sticks to the berth, the money and the walking. The tour verdicts live on their own page.
If you’re weighing a third-party booking, our Shore Excursions Group and Viator comparison covers when each fits. On an island with long roads and a hard return time, a ship tour is the safer pick.

You’ll need a UK ETA before you travel.
GOV.UK says an Electronic Travel Authorisation costs £20, isn’t refundable, and lasts two years or until your passport expires. Decisions usually come within a day but can take up to three working days.
The page doesn’t mention cruise passengers, so check with your line — and apply at home, not at the last minute.
The money is pounds sterling.
Celebrity’s port guide says smaller shops may not accept cards, so carry a little cash — pounds, not dollars. We found no published taxi fares, so ask the driver before you set off.
Taxis are limited on big days.
A taxi rank sits at Victoria Pier.
One third-party guide says taxis are limited and worth pre-booking on busy cruise days, and that the public buses are built for residents. Don’t plan a self-guided trip to Jarlshof on a bus timetable — the return leg is the risk.
Mind the opening hours.
Fort Charlotte is free, open 9:30 to 5:30 from April to September and 10 to 4 from October to mid-November.
Historic Environment Scotland confirms Fort Charlotte is closed from Tuesday, October 27 to Friday, October 30, 2026, for site inspection work (checked October 29, 2026). Recheck if you’re reading this later; we haven’t independently confirmed an October 31 reopening.
Jarlshof runs 9:30 to 5 daily from April to September, then Tuesday to Saturday, 10 to 4, from October. The Shetland Museum is free. Its opening-times page lists Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10 to 5, Thursday 1 to 9 p.m., closed Monday and Sunday, and doesn’t say which season that covers — confirm for your date.
Dress for wind.
Holland America tells its Sumburgh Head guests to dress warmly in layers with a windproof, waterproof outer shell, a hat, gloves and a scarf. Take that advice for any day ashore — Shetland weather can change quickly.
The State Department rates the United Kingdom Level 2: exercise increased caution.
That is a national advisory, not a rating for Lerwick or Shetland. Confirmed on the State Department advisory index October 29, 2026; recheck if you’re reading this later.

Lerwick FAQ
Can I walk from the cruise ship into Lerwick?
Possibly, but most people will ride. Mair’s Pier is listed at 1.2 km from the center and Holmsgarth at 1 km.
A free coach runs between those berths and town. The walk is possible on a dry day.
Does Lerwick tender?
Sometimes. The port says larger vessels anchor and passengers go ashore by launch to pontoons in a sheltered dock next to the center. The inner anchorage is about a 5-minute tender ride.
Is there a free shuttle in Lerwick?
Yes. The Lerwick Port Authority provides a complimentary shuttle coach between Mair’s Pier, Holmsgarth and the town center.
It doesn’t publish a timetable on the pages we read, so ask at the quay — the meet-and-greet team is there for that.
Is there a cruise terminal?
The port’s facilities page describes none. It does say tour drop-off and pick-up areas sit next to every berth, and a meet-and-greet team works the quayside.
What currency does Shetland use?
Pounds sterling. Celebrity warns that smaller shops may not take cards, so bring a bit of cash — coins and notes, not a dollar bill.
Do I need a visa or ETA for Lerwick?
A US citizen on a short tourist visit needs a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation, which GOV.UK prices at £20. It lasts two years or until the passport expires.
GOV.UK says nothing specific about cruise passengers, so confirm with your cruise line.
How far is Jarlshof from Lerwick?
Shetland.org describes the south Mainland peninsula as running about 25 miles south from Lerwick. Shore excursions to the area typically run 2.5 to 4.5 hours.
When is the cruise season in Lerwick?
The 2026 season opened April 3 and runs through November. The port says forward bookings are strong, with demand stretching to 2030 — a busy stop.
