Destination Port Guide · Mindelo, Cabo Verde

Mindelo

Mindelo is a small port town on an old volcanic bay, and the ship ties up close to it. The quay is about 400 m long, Global Ports Holding puts the city center about 1 km away, and a secondary guide calls it roughly 15 minutes on foot. The widest views are a drive away, up Monte Verde — and a call here often lands on a crossing, not a Caribbean-style schedule.

Mindelo in brief

Mindelo is on São Vicente, in the northern group of Cabo Verde’s islands, and it sits on Porto Grande bay, which What’s in Port describes as an underwater volcanic crater.

The town is known for morna music, brightly painted colonial buildings and street art. It is a place to wander, not a place to rush.

The berth is new, and that changes the arrival.

Before 2024, CruiseMapper says, ships anchored off Porto Grande and passengers came ashore by tender.

The new cruise terminal was set to open on June 21, 2025, according to a Lusa report, with a quay 400 m long and 20 m wide that handles two ships at once, up to 6,000 passengers between them.

Global Ports Holding lists a 900 m² passenger terminal, a maximum ship length of 350 m, and depths of 9.5 to 11 m. The same page is internally inconsistent about berth counts, so we’re quoting the quay length, not a berth count.

We found nothing that says ships still tender here, and your daily program will settle it.

The center is about 1 km from the port, per Global Ports Holding, and What’s in Port puts the walk at about 15 minutes.

That’s a stroll along the waterfront, not a transfer.

The bigger sights need wheels.

Monte Verde, at 750 m by one guide and 774 m by a tour listing, looks across to Santo Antão, and there are no buses to the top, so it means a taxi or a tour.

Our Mindelo shore excursion guide sorts the options.

On foot from the ship

Docked
The cruise terminal

A 400 m quay at Porto Grande for two large ships, with shore power and a 900 m² passenger building, per the port and CruiseMapper.

∼1 km
To the city center

About 0.6 mile (1 km) by Global Ports Holding’s figure.

∼15 min
On foot into town

What’s in Port gives about 15 minutes, though we couldn’t date that guide against the new terminal.

∼5 min
To the exit gate

One tour operator says its guides meet you at the Porto Grande exit gate, about a 5-minute walk from the ship.

∼30 min
To the African market

The same guide puts the clothing-and-crafts market about 30 minutes’ walk from the port, so a taxi may suit the heat.

Tourist information

A small tourist kiosk sits near the harbor off Av Marginal, per What’s in Port. An older cruiser report found no taxi fares posted there.

The first five tags are town sights near the port. The next two are close views and sand, and the rest are a drive across São Vicente.

Santo Antão is the big island across the water. A ferry runs from Mindelo to Porto Novo in about an hour, per a secondary guide, though the usual departure times sit awkwardly against a ship’s clock.

Practical notes

Current as of October 29, 2026 Review periodically

Taxis are the way to Monte Verde, and no official fare turned up.

What’s in Port lists about 12 euros return to Monte Verde and doesn’t say whether that’s per car or per person. Cruiser reports on Noonsite, dated 2010 to 2018, warn of overcharging and suggest having the price written down first.

One 2017 report paid 75 euros for a pickup-truck trip to a lookout and beach, and police stopped the vehicle on the way back. That was a yacht crew, not a cruise passenger, and old — use it as a caution, not a price list.

Shops keep short hours.

What’s in Port gives Monday to Friday roughly 8:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 18:30, Saturday 8:30 to 12:00, and closed Sundays and public holidays. Banks are often shut in the afternoon, and markets are closed Sundays, per a tour listing. Check the weekday of your call.

Currency is the escudo, and we couldn’t confirm card acceptance.

What’s in Port says Visa and MasterCard are accepted at a growing number of upscale hotels. It doesn’t cover shops, taxis or markets, so carry small notes in the local currency for those.

The US advisory is Level 1.

The U.S. Embassy in Cabo Verde reports the advisory renewed December 15, 2025 at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, with Level 2 for Praia because of crime — not São Vicente. The embassy homepage banner also reads Level 1. We couldn’t open the State Department’s own advisory page on our final check.

When we first read the State Department page, it warned of petty theft at marketplaces and public gatherings, strong currents and undertows, and Coast Guard concerns about security practices at Cabo Verdean ports. Check the current text before you go.

Entry rules need a second look.

The map card says Cabo Verde asks foreign visitors to pre-register on its EASE platform.

A secondary guide says U.S. citizens can visit visa-free for up to 30 days and that EASE applies to nearly all international arrivals, costs 3,400 escudos and should be done at least 5 days ahead. It doesn’t address cruise passengers either.

We couldn’t find an official page that addresses cruise passengers, so ask your line before you sail.

Sources: Global Ports Holding and ENAPOR for the port; Lusa (via AMAN Alliance) for the terminal opening; CruiseMapper and CruiseTimetables for calls; What’s in Port, Noonsite and tour listings on Expedia and Princess for walks, taxis and hours; the U.S. Embassy in Cabo Verde for the advisory level (State Department page could not be re-opened); The Trip Verdict for entry rules (a secondary guide) — all consulted October 29, 2026. Taxi fares, walk times and card acceptance come from secondary or dated sources, not the port.
