Motril (Granada) in brief
Motril doesn’t pretend to be a cruise town. That’s fine — it’s a port with a very good back door.
It’s the largest town on the Costa Tropical, the stretch of Granada province’s coast between Málaga and Almería, with about 50,000 people, per Andalucia.com.
The harbor handles fishing boats, ferries and bulk cargo, and cruise ships share it. Diario del Puerto’s 2025 port profile counted 38 calls in 2024 and 48 scheduled for 2025.
That’s a big jump for a small port. MedCruise recorded 21 calls and about 4,570 cruise passengers here in 2016.
There’s no cruise terminal yet.
MedCruise lists no passenger terminal here. In June 2026, elDiario.es reported that port sources consider a private €30 million terminal plan dead. The developer’s subsidiary has since applied for about 2,500 m² on the bulk quay for a passenger services building — a separate project, the port says, with no opening date.
So you step off onto a quay, not into a hall. Celebrity’s port notes put shops, restaurants and ATMs nearby, but sort out water, sunscreen and some cash before you leave the ship anyway.
The town is a ride, not a stroll.
Motril’s center is about 2 km from the port, and the shuttle buses are how most people get there. When Norwegian Getaway called in October 2024 — 4,099 passengers, the most the port had ever seen — eight shuttle buses ran into Motril and its beaches.
Granada is the main event.
The city sits about 64 km inland and roughly 800 meters (about 2,600 feet) higher, so the coach climbs most of the way. By car it’s about 45 minutes; Seabourn plans about 75 minutes each way for its coach to the Alhambra.
Norwegian’s calls this October ran long — arriving between 07:00 and 10:00 and leaving between 18:00 and 23:00, per CruiseMapper — which leaves room for Granada. Shorter calls exist too: Saga’s Spirit of Discovery was listed from 09:00 to 17:00.
The Alhambra runs on timed entry for the Nasrid Palaces, and the ticket is tied to your passport. Read our Motril shore excursion guide before you book anything — it walks through the ticket rules in detail.
From the quay to town and beyond
Diario del Puerto names these two as the cruise quays, with the berth set by the ship’s size. MedCruise lists Dique for ships up to 215 meters, and up to 300 by exception.
MedCruise lists no passenger terminal. Celebrity says shops, restaurants, pharmacies and ATMs sit next to the port — near it, not on the quay itself.
MedCruise describes a free shuttle into town, and the port’s 2025 profile says shuttles run depending on the ship. Ask at guest services which kind you’ve got before you count on it.
About 1.2 miles each way. On foot that’s roughly 25 to 30 minutes by our estimate, and we found no published walking route from the quay.
About 64 km (40 miles) on the highway, climbing most of the way. Coaches heading for the Alhambra gate run longer — Seabourn allows about 75 minutes.
Route planners show a roughly hourly service from the Motril bus station, about an hour each way. You’d still need to get from the port to the station.
What's nearby, broadly
The first four are in Motril itself, a shuttle ride from the quay. Celebrity calls Playa Poniente family-friendly and close to downtown; Norwegian points to Playa de Torrenueva.
Salobreña, with its hilltop castle, sits just west along the coast. Almuñécar turns up on the ship-day excursion lists too. The Nerja caves, the Alpujarras villages and Sierra Nevada all appear on local excursion menus — Diario del Puerto puts Sierra Nevada about 40 minutes from the beaches.
Granada is the long one. Give it the whole call, not a spare afternoon.

Motril sits on Western Mediterranean itineraries along Spain’s southern coast, between ports such as Málaga and Gibraltar to the west and Cartagena to the east. In October 2026, CruiseMapper listed calls from Norwegian Cruise Line (Norwegian Dawn, Escape, Star and Viva), P&O Cruises, Star Clippers, Aurora Expeditions, Saga Cruises and Explora Journeys. The port’s 2025 profile also names Oceania, Regent, Sea Cloud, SeaDream and Holland America among its lines. This page sticks to the quay, the shuttle and the road. The question of which Granada tour to buy, or whether to skip Granada for the coast, lives on the excursion guide.

Euros, and bring some cash.
Spain uses the euro, and Celebrity’s port notes say cards are less widely accepted than in the US, especially for small purchases. A few coins for a café or a beach chair help.
No taxi fare is published for the port.
We couldn’t find an official Motril taxi tariff or a fixed port-to-Granada fare. Agree on the price before you get in, not at the end.
The Alhambra keeps seasonal hours.
From April 1 to October 14 the complex opens 8:30 to 20:00. From October 15 to March 31 it closes at 18:00 instead, and it’s open every day of the week.
The Junta de Andalucía’s price order, in force since August 1, 2025, sets the Alhambra General daytime ticket at €21 and the gardens-and-Alcazaba ticket at €12. Advance sales add a management commission on top; Granada guides put the General at €22.27 online. Under-12s go free, but the official site says every minor still needs a ticket.
Spain is Level 2 on the US advisory scale.
Spain is at Level 2, exercise increased caution, due to terrorism and unrest, according to the advisory banner on the US Embassy in Spain’s site when we checked on October 28, 2026. We couldn’t load travel.state.gov directly, so check it the week you sail.
US passport holders don’t need a visa for Spain for stays up to 90 days in any 180. The EU’s Entry/Exit System has run at Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026; ETIAS isn’t operating and has no announced start date.
Airports, if you’re joining or leaving here.
MedCruise lists Granada’s airport about 75 km away and Málaga’s about 108 km away. That matters if you’re flying in for a pre-cruise night in Granada.
A mild coast, a cooler city.
MedCruise says Motril averages above 20°C (68°F) on more than 300 days a year — a promotional figure. Granada sits about 800 meters up, so it can run cooler than the quay. Bring a layer for the city, not just sunscreen.
