Naha in brief
Naha is a city port with a monorail, which makes it an easy stop on an Asia itinerary — and the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, with the Naha Port Authority managing the cruise berths.
Most of what you came for sits along one rail line, and the berth is a short walk from it.
Ships use the Wakasa berth, also called Tomari Wharf No. 8. The Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau lists it at about 340 m long, with roughly 10 m of water alongside, and says the terminal opened in 2014.
The Japan Tourism Agency puts Kokusai Dori about a 20-minute walk from the terminal, and the street itself runs roughly 1.6 km — so you’ll be on foot for a while once you get there.
Shuri Castle is the other draw, and it has news.
The castle’s main hall burned in 2019. Shuri Castle’s restored main hall is scheduled to open to the public on November 23, 2026, and the park says adult admission goes to ¥1,000 from that day — up from the old fare. The rest of the park is a separate matter, so check its calendar for your date.
Going inside the hall needs a timed online reservation. Buy it before you sail, not at the gate.
A second cruise berth opened in 2023 at Shinko Wharf, about 4 km from Wakasa by one local guide’s count, and your ship’s port paperwork will say which one you get.
From the berth into the city
About 340 m long, on Naha’s harbor. Ships tie up alongside, so there’s no tender, and the terminal has a rain shelter and permanent customs and immigration.
Okinawa’s tourism site lists restrooms, Wi-Fi, a ramp and money exchange — but it doesn’t publish exchange hours or rates, so don’t plan around it.
Kencho-mae is the station the Japan Tourism Agency names, and a local guide says Asahibashi is about the same walk — across ordinary city streets, not a pier road.
That’s the Japan Tourism Agency’s figure, and a charter-taxi firm puts the road distance near 2 km and the drive at about 5 minutes. Shops mostly open around 10 or 11 a.m., so an early arrival gets you a quiet street.
Adult fares are ¥320 to Shuri (about 16 minutes), ¥250 to Makishi (about 5) and ¥250 to Kencho-mae (about 2) — and IC cards work, per a local guide.
CruiseMapper lists it at 430 m long and in service since February 2023. The tourism site shows no facilities there, and a local guide says walking to town isn’t practical — so plan on a taxi, not a stroll.
What's nearby, broadly
Kokusai Dori, Makishi market and the pottery lanes of Tsuboya are the city half of the day. The Japan Tourism Agency calls Makishi the “Kitchen of Naha” and lists Tsuboya pottery as the draw of the lane named for it.
Closer to the berth, Tomari Iyumachi fish market is about a 10-minute walk, per the charter-taxi firm, and Naminoue Beach about 15 — a diving and snorkeling beach on the western bay, says the Japan Tourism Agency.
Shuri Castle is about 6 km away by road, and Shikinaen Garden and the old Navy Underground Headquarters ride along on the 6-hour history tours we found. The Kerama Islands are a ferry day from Tomarin, inside Naha Port — a trip, not a detour.
Commonly reached from
Naha sits on Japan itineraries. Our map card lists MSC as a regular caller. CruiseMapper’s October 2026 data shows MSC’s Bellissima, Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas, Azamara Pursuit, and Star Cruises and StarDream ships, and a local charter firm names Windstar’s Star Seeker. The card also lists Regent as occasional; we found no Regent call to confirm that. Neighbors on the same routes: Miyakojima, Keelung (Taipei), Kagoshima and Nagasaki. Our Asia cruises hub shows how they fit together.

Entry: no visa for a short tourist visit.
Ordinary U.S. passport holders can enter Japan visa-free for qualifying short tourist visits of up to 90 days, and the passport must remain valid throughout the stay (Japan’s foreign ministry, checked October 29, 2026). Your cruise line’s boarding-document rules are separate from Japan’s immigration minimum, so check what your line asks for. The State Department rates Japan Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions — a national advisory, not a Naha-specific rating.
Carry yen.
The currency is the Japanese yen, and Okinawa’s tourism site lists money exchange at the Wakasa berth — with no hours or rates. We couldn’t source how widely cards work at small shops and stalls, so bring cash for markets and snacks.
MSC’s Naha page notes that a Japan exit fee applies, so check your own line’s fees.
Taxis: no metered tariff is published.
A charter-taxi firm that meets cruise guests inside the terminal lists a ¥14,000 minimum for pre-booked cars and courses from ¥28,000 for 4 hours, with a return guaranteed at least 90 minutes before sailing. That’s a private-car price, not a street-taxi fare.
The same firm says a shuttle between gangway and terminal is “sometimes provided.” A trial shuttle to Kokusai Dori ran through March 2026, but we found no word on this season.
Shuri Castle: main hall opens November 23, 2026.
Shuri Castle’s restored main hall is scheduled to open to the public on November 23, 2026. From that date adults pay ¥1,000, per the park. Entry to the main hall (the Seiden) needs a timed reservation for everyone, and a ticket without one covers the paid area but not the interior. Congestion peaks from about 8:30 to 11:00, and the park recommends public transport over a car.
Paid-area hours run roughly 8:30 to 19:00, or 18:00 from December to March, according to japan-guide.com — so check the park’s calendar for your date, and recheck if you’re reading this later.
Weather: typhoon season is the risk.
Okinawa.com puts typhoon season at roughly June to October, with August and September the worst. The rainy season usually runs from mid-May to late June, and sea temperatures sit near 25°C in November and 21–22°C from January to March — so winter is a city day, not a beach day.

Naha FAQ
Can I walk from the cruise ship to Kokusai Dori?
Yes, from the Wakasa berth — the Japan Tourism Agency puts it about a 20-minute walk. From the second berth, a local guide says walking isn’t practical.
Does Naha use tenders?
No. Ships dock alongside at the Wakasa berth or the second cruise berth, though you should confirm with your line, as you would at any port.
Is there a free shuttle at Naha?
A charter-taxi firm says a shuttle between the gangway and the terminal is sometimes provided, and a trial shuttle to Kokusai Dori ran through March 2026.
We found nothing confirming one for this season, so your ship’s daily program is the place to look.
How do I get from the ship to Shuri Castle?
Walk about 15 minutes to a monorail station, then ride the Yui Rail to Shuri — from Asahibashi it’s ¥320 and about 16 minutes. From Shuri Station it’s a 15- to 20-minute walk uphill, or a short bus ride, per japan-guide.com.
A charter-taxi firm puts the drive at about 15 minutes.
Is the Shuri Castle main hall open?
Shuri Castle’s restored main hall is scheduled to open to the public on November 23, 2026, when adult admission rises to ¥1,000 and going inside the hall needs a timed reservation. A ticket without the reservation still covers the rest of the paid area, so check the park’s page for your date.
Do I need a visa or cash?
Ordinary U.S. passport holders can enter Japan visa-free for qualifying short tourist visits of up to 90 days, and the passport must remain valid throughout the stay. Your cruise line may ask for more, so check its documents. The currency is the yen. The terminal lists money exchange but no hours or rates, so carry some yen.
Does a second berth ever come into play?
Naha has a second cruise berth at Shinko Wharf, in service since February 2023, and CruiseMapper says MSC and Royal Caribbean hold preferential rights there from 2028. We don't know which ships use it this season, so check your port paperwork.
When is the weather best for a Naha port day?
Okinawa.com puts typhoon season at roughly June to October, with August and September the highest risk, so watch your line's updates. Sea temperatures sit near 25°C in November and 21–22°C from January to March.
