Ocean Cay in brief
Most private-island pages answer one question: dock or tender.
This one is settled. MSC's own destination page says ships "dock directly alongside the pier, so you can walk straight off the ship and onto the island." No tender ticket, no queue, no weather-dependent boat ride.
The question that actually governs an Ocean Cay day is a different one — what time you stop treating this as a beach call.
MSC's own FAQ answers it plainly, and it is not what most people expect.
"The beaches are slowly closed in the late afternoon, furthest away first and lastly the Lighthouse beach closest to the ship. All beaches are closed before sundown which varies depending upon the season."
So the famous late stay is real, and the beach part of it is not. Our own Caribbean cruise guide describes ships staying "into the evening for a night on the beach," and we are correcting that here rather than quietly leaving it.
What you get after dark is the lighthouse end of the island — Lighthouse Bay Beach, the bars, the restaurants and the show. A different evening, not a shorter one.
MSC's own FAQ gives the departure spread: MSC Seashore, Seaside, Divina and Magnifica overnight on selected sailings, and "all other ships have itineraries with late night departures between 9pm and 12 midnight."
That is a three-hour window, not a time — your own Daily Programme is the authority, not this page.
The show is the reason the schedule exists.
MSC's own FAQ says the Lighthouse LED show runs twice each night, and adds that times may vary. Its destination page calls it the only lighthouse LED show in the Bahamas.
Nobody publishes the times. Ask at the Welcome Centre when you walk off — not at eight o'clock, when you are wondering whether you have missed it.
The island itself is small enough that the walk is never the problem.
MSC's own FAQ puts it at 95 acres with two miles of beachfront, and says "the most distant place on the island is only a 20-minute walk away." Golf carts follow a regular route for anyone who would rather not.
Wikipedia's figure for the landmass is 0.42 square kilometres, which is closer to 104 acres — so we print both rather than split the difference.
It is an artificial island — the genuinely unusual thing about it. Wikipedia records it as built in the late 1960s by Dillingham Construction to mine white oolitic aragonite sand, with MSC signing a 100-year lease in 2015.
MSC's own copy calls it "a former industrial site that we reclaimed and restored to its natural beauty." That is the company describing its own work — we are labelling it, not doubting it.
Money here is one card and no cash.
MSC's own FAQ: "Yes, you can pay for all things on the island with your Cruise Card." There is no local vendor, no market stall taking dollars and nothing to negotiate — which is rarer in this region than it sounds.
Your drink package may or may not follow you ashore, and the answer depends on which one you bought. MSC's own FAQ says Premium Extra works on the island for non-alcoholic and select alcoholic drinks, and that the Minors package works only if an accompanying adult holds Premium Extra.
MSC's destination page adds the qualifier that matters: the beverage offering "may not include the full onboard beverage selection." Select, not everything.
One berth, not two, and that runs until late 2027.
Cruise Industry News reported on January 28, 2026 that a pier extension is under construction to let two ships dock at once — only one can today — with completion due late 2027.
One brand fills that berth on a schedule, and it is not quite the only one.
MSC is the regular caller. Sister brand Explora Journeys turns up on select sailings too, per its own published itineraries — read in our own Ocean Cay excursion guide, because Explora's own pages would not load for us.
So "MSC guests only" is close, but it is not right.
That matters for one reason. Explora is a separate brand with its own booking path and its own all-inclusive fare.
The MSC package rules further down this page are MSC's — not necessarily yours.
The same outlet reported on September 7, 2026 that the first double call is expected on November 16, 2027. So for every sailing between now and then, you have the island with one ship's worth of people on it.
That is the quietest a Bahamian private island gets.
That is the best thing about Ocean Cay right now — and it has an expiry date.
Which paid add-on is worth the money, and which is a nicer chair on the same free sand, is the job of our Ocean Cay shore excursion guide.
On foot from the ship
MSC's own destination page says ships dock directly alongside the pier and guests walk straight off. Its FAQ adds walking paths to every destination, easy-to-follow signs and golf-cart transport for anyone who prefers not to walk.
MSC's own FAQ says the most distant place on the island is a 20-minute walk, and names Bimini Beach as the one furthest from the port. It is also the first beach closed in the late afternoon — so it is the one to leave early.
MSC's own FAQ calls this the beach closest to the ship, home to the 100-foot lighthouse, with "lively entertainment day and night." It is also the last beach to close, which makes it the default place to be once the far beaches have gone.
MSC's own FAQ describes golf carts following a regular route around the island, and beach wheelchairs waiting at the pier on request — the same page calls the island completely ADA compliant.
MSC's own FAQ: "you are free to come and go from the ship throughout the day and your ship cabin is always accessible." The buffet opens at select times and some bars stay open, though most specialty restaurants close during the day.
What's nearby, broadly
Every one of those is on the same 95 acres, and only one of them is closed to you — Ocean House Beach is MSC Yacht Club only, per MSC's own FAQ, and there is no day pass. The rest split by distance and by closing time rather than by price, since the sand itself costs nothing. Bimini Beach is the furthest and the first to shut; Lighthouse Bay is the closest and the last. Plan the day outward and come back inward.
Commonly reached from
Ocean Cay belongs to MSC Group, and MSC Cruises is the regular caller — short Bahamas and longer Caribbean runs out of Miami and Port Canaveral. Sister brand Explora Journeys calls on select sailings as well, per its own published itineraries, which is one line more than the flat "MSC only" shorthand allows; no third line docks here. MSC's own FAQ puts the island 20 miles south of Bimini and 65 miles east of Miami, and says "all ships sailing a Bahamas or Caribbean itinerary will visit Ocean Cay." Where it fits in a wider week is the job of our Caribbean cruise guide, and the ranked add-on decision belongs to our Ocean Cay shore excursion guide.
Planning your Ocean Cay day
The specific picks — which paid excursion is actually worth it, what to skip, and why — already have their own dedicated guide, built and kept current on its own schedule. This page stays at the port-identity level on purpose; that one goes deep.
Booking a tour yourself? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator covers which of the two suits which kind of port day — and when the ship’s own tour is still the better buy.
How does Ocean Cay compare with the other cruise-line beach stops? Our private islands and beach clubs showdown scores twelve of them in six categories, with families and couples fit shown separately.
Best Ocean Cay shore excursions
MSC's private Bahamas island has no town and no independent tours — every dollar spent here goes to MSC Group.
See the full excursion guide →Practical notes
This is private property in The Bahamas, and both halves of that matter.
There is no immigration process to go ashore and no passport stamp. You walk off with your cruise card — which MSC's own FAQ says you must carry to enter and exit the ship all day.
Bahamian law still reaches the island, and there is a recent, dated example. On May 12, 2026 the Bahamas prohibited alcohol sales for election day, and Disney, Royal Caribbean and MSC all applied it at their private destinations, per Cruise Industry News reporting of May 11, 2026.
A private island is private, not sovereign. That is the useful version of the rule.
Drones are the other place the country shows up. MSC's own FAQ permits them only with Bahamian Civil Aviation Authority certificates and MSC management's permission.
Service animals need a permit from the Bahamian Department of Agriculture as well as MSC's approval, again per MSC's own FAQ.
Money is the simplest thing on this page.
MSC's own FAQ: "Yes, you can pay for all things on the island with your Cruise Card." Bring no cash and carry no wallet.
There is nobody to tip in cash and nobody to haggle with — every transaction on the island is MSC Group's.
What your fare already covers, per MSC's own FAQ.
The Seakers buffet food court is complimentary, along with four of the five food trucks; the fifth sells food. There is an ice cream parlour, The Smiling Fish, in Ocean Village.
Complimentary water is available at all bars and buffets and at water fountains near every restroom. Ten bars operate on the island.
Towels come off the ship with you or from the island entrance, and MSC's FAQ says all of them must be returned to the entrance.
Restrooms are on every beach. Two medical centres operate on the island, with a doctor and nurse support from the ship.
What costs money, and where MSC publishes nothing.
Sunbeds, umbrellas and cabanas are rented for an additional fee, per MSC's own FAQ, which gives no prices. Lighthouse Beach carries a limited number of umbrellas, chairs and bean bags handed out at the umbrella stations.
We found no current cabana rate card from MSC anywhere. Our own excursion guide's figures come from third-party trip reports, and it says so itself — treat them as a starting point, not a rate.
Watersports gear, the spa, the lighthouse climb and the guided trips are all extra — MSC's own FAQ says booking them in advance saves up to 20%, and that online prices are already discounted.
You cannot rent any part of the island. MSC's own FAQ answers that one with a flat no.
Drinks ashore, which is the question people get wrong.
Everything in this section is MSC's own policy for MSC's own packages.
An Explora Journeys sailing runs on a different, all-inclusive fare. We could not load Explora's own terms — so take none of this as read if that is the brand that brought you.
MSC's own FAQ: the Premium Extra drink package may be used on Ocean Cay for non-alcoholic and select alcoholic beverages.
The Minors package works ashore only if the minor is with an adult holding Premium Extra. MSC Yacht Club guests have complimentary drinks served at Ocean House Restaurant and Ocean House Beach — not island-wide.
MSC's destination page adds that the beverage offering "may not include the full onboard beverage selection." Ask at the first bar what your card covers, before the third one.
Diamond Card Voyagers Club specialty dining does not transfer ashore, and neither does an Aurea Experience spa treatment — both stay on the ship, per MSC's own FAQ.
Accessibility is unusually well documented here, by private-island standards.
MSC's own FAQ calls Ocean Cay "completely ADA compliant" and says beach wheelchairs wait at the pier on disembarkation, on request.
Golf carts run a regular route. The pier removes the single hardest part of most island days — the tender transfer, which rules other islands out entirely for some guests.
Food allergies are the gap, and MSC names it itself. The FAQ says the island cannot accommodate specific allergies and recommends eating aboard; kosher food is not available ashore. Vegetarian, vegan, veggie burgers and gluten-free bread on request are.
The conservation story, reported as MSC's own account of itself.
The MSC Foundation's own Super Coral Reefs Programme page claims 630-plus coral fragments in its nursery, 250-plus outplanted, and "100% survival of nursery corals after unprecedented marine heat wave in 2023."
Its own first-year release for the Marine Conservation Center, reported by Cruise Industry News on April 22, 2026, says the centre opened in April 2025 and has since trained over 20 marine science students and engaged more than 17,000 visitors in ocean education.
Those are the Foundation's figures about the Foundation's work, not an independent audit — we are labelling them, not doubting them.
The government side we could not stand up. Our own excursion guide reports a 2019 Bahamian Cabinet approval of a marine protected area over roughly 64 square miles and a Mission Blue Hope Spot designation in 2023, and we could not reach a Bahamian government page to confirm either.
Absence of a reachable source is not evidence the claim is wrong — only a reason to stop short of printing the number as settled.
Season, crowding and the thing that changes in 2027.
Cruise Industry News reported on January 28, 2026 that the pier extension under construction will let two ships dock at once, where only one can today, for completion in late 2027.
The same outlet put the first double call at November 16, 2027, with two 205,700-ton sisters bringing more than 11,000 passengers and nearly 4,500 crew.
Sail before that and you have a one-ship island — worth more, honestly, than most of the paid upgrades on it.
The US State Department rates The Bahamas Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, updated July 28, 2026, with crime concentrated in Nassau and Freeport — neither of which is anywhere near this island.
The advisory's water warnings are the relevant half here: "Boating is not well regulated," and "Stay alert for sharks." Hurricane season runs June to November, and a private island does not change that.
Connectivity, kids and the small print.
MSC's own FAQ says the island has Wi-Fi and that internet packages are bought pre-cruise or aboard, not ashore.
There is no kids club and no babysitting on the island — though MSC schedules children's activities on South lagoon and Lighthouse beaches through the day and evening.
Parents must accompany minors leaving the ship. MSC recommends staying with them ashore throughout.
There is a wedding pavilion, hired aboard rather than on the island, for symbolic ceremonies and vow renewals.

Ocean Cay FAQ
Do ships dock or tender at Ocean Cay?
They dock. MSC's own destination page says ships "dock directly alongside the pier, so you can walk straight off the ship and onto the island."
Only one ship can dock at a time today. Cruise Industry News reported on January 28, 2026 that a pier extension is under construction to allow two, due for completion in late 2027, and on September 7, 2026 that the first double call is expected on November 16, 2027.
Until then this is a one-ship island, which is the best thing about it.
MSC is the regular caller, and sister brand Explora Journeys calls on select sailings too — one line more than the usual "MSC only" shorthand allows, and no third line docks here.
What time does the ship leave Ocean Cay?
Later than almost any other private island, and MSC publishes the range itself. Its own FAQ says MSC Seashore, Seaside, Divina and Magnifica overnight on selected sailings, and that "all other ships have itineraries with late night departures between 9pm and 12 midnight."
That is a window, not a time. Take the all-aboard from your own Daily Programme rather than from this page.
Can I stay on the beach after dark?
No, and this is the fact most Ocean Cay planning gets wrong.
MSC's own FAQ says the beaches close progressively in the late afternoon, furthest first and Lighthouse Beach last, and that "All beaches are closed before sundown which varies depending upon the season."
The evening happens around the lighthouse, the bars and the restaurants instead. Our own Caribbean hub describes the late stay as a night on the beach, and that is the part we are correcting.
What is the lighthouse show and when does it run?
An LED show on the 100-foot lighthouse at Lighthouse Bay Beach, set to music. MSC's own destination page calls it the only lighthouse LED show in the Bahamas.
MSC's own FAQ says it runs twice each night and that times may vary. Nobody publishes the times, so ask at the Welcome Centre when you first walk off.
Watching it is free. Climbing the tower is the part that costs money.
Does my drink package work on Ocean Cay?
The Premium Extra package does, partly. MSC's own FAQ says it may be used ashore "for non-alcoholic and select alcoholic beverages," and MSC's destination page adds that the island's offering "may not include the full onboard beverage selection."
All of that is MSC's policy for MSC's packages. An Explora Journeys sailing runs on its own all-inclusive fare, and we could not load Explora's own terms — so none of this transfers automatically if that brand brought you.
The Minors package works ashore only if the minor is with an adult who holds Premium Extra.
MSC Yacht Club guests have complimentary drinks at Ocean House Restaurant and Ocean House Beach specifically, not across the island. Ask at the first bar what your card covers.
Do I need cash at Ocean Cay?
No. MSC's own FAQ says you can pay for everything on the island with your cruise card.
There is no independent vendor, no market stall and no local operator to buy from. Every dollar spent here is MSC's.
Keep the card on you anyway — MSC's FAQ says you need it to get on and off the ship all day, not only to pay.
What is free at Ocean Cay and what costs extra?
Free, per MSC's own FAQ: the beaches, the Seakers buffet food court, four of the five food trucks, complimentary water at every bar and buffet, restrooms on every beach, and towels taken from the ship or collected at the island entrance.
Extra: sunbeds, umbrellas and cabanas, watersports rentals, the spa, the lighthouse climb, the guided boat trips and the fifth food truck.
MSC publishes no rate card for any of it — and MSC's own FAQ says booking excursions in advance saves up to 20%.
Can I leave Ocean Cay and see the real Bahamas?
No. There is no town, no road off, no ferry and no independent operator on the island — and no third cruise line either, beyond MSC and its sister brand Explora Journeys.
MSC's own FAQ puts it 20 miles south of Bimini and 65 miles east of Miami, and says it is not possible to rent any part of the island either.
What you can do is go back aboard whenever you like. MSC's FAQ says you are free to come and go all day with your cabin accessible throughout, which is the closest thing to leaving that exists here.
Is Ocean Cay accessible for a wheelchair user?
Better documented than most private islands, and MSC commits to it in writing. Its own FAQ calls Ocean Cay "completely ADA compliant" and says beach wheelchairs are waiting at the pier on disembarkation, on request.
Golf carts run a regular route around the island, and the pier removes the tender transfer that makes other island calls hard.
Confirm your specific needs with MSC before you sail — a published commitment is a good sign, not a guarantee for every situation.
Is the marine reserve real, or is it MSC's marketing?
The conservation work is documented, and the documentation is MSC's own. The MSC Foundation's Super Coral Reefs Programme page claims 630-plus coral fragments in its nursery, 250-plus outplanted and 100% nursery survival through the 2023 marine heatwave.
Its own first-year release for the on-site Marine Conservation Center, reported by Cruise Industry News on April 22, 2026, says the centre opened in April 2025 and has trained over 20 marine science students and engaged more than 17,000 visitors.
The government side we could not verify. Our own excursion guide reports a 2019 Bahamian marine-protected-area approval over roughly 64 square miles and a 2023 Mission Blue Hope Spot, and no Bahamian government page was reachable to confirm it. That is a gap in our checking, not proof either way.
How big is the island and how far will I walk?
Small. MSC's own FAQ gives 95 acres with two miles of beachfront and says "the most distant place on the island is only a 20-minute walk away."
Wikipedia puts the landmass at 0.42 square kilometres, closer to 104 acres. We are printing both rather than picking.
Golf carts follow a regular route for anyone who would rather ride. Bimini Beach is the far end and also the first to close — so walk out early and drift back.
Can the island handle a food allergy?
No, and MSC says so itself rather than leaving you to find out. Its own FAQ states the island cannot accommodate specific allergies and recommends eating aboard the ship, where the galley can.
Kosher food is not available ashore either. Vegetarian and vegan dishes, veggie burgers, salads and gluten-free bread on request are.
Plan the meal around the ship. Not around the buffet on the sand.
