Ponce in brief
Ponce sits on Puerto Rico’s south coast, roughly 75 miles from San Juan by road. Cruise ships here are the exception — a handful of calls, not a season.
The 2027 plan is two calls. News is My Business and El Nuevo Día reported in July 2026 that Legend of the Seas will call on March 31 and April 14, arriving at 10:00 and leaving at 18:00, an eight-hour stop. Gangwaze lists them as 6-night sailings round trip from Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades).
It isn’t the first big ship — just the next one.
Icon of the Seas called at the Port of Ponce with passengers on May 7, 2025. Primera Hora described it as the first time a passenger cruise ship had docked there, after a technical stop in January 2024 with nobody aboard.
That matters for one reason: Ponce has handled a ship of that size at a pier. The harbor isn’t the open question — the plan for the day is, and no Legend of the Seas tour list is published in what we read.
What the day is built from.
Plaza Las Delicias, the Parque de Bombas firehouse, the cathedral and the Serrallés castle on its hill make up the core of a town day. Coffee country, Tibes and the southern coast come next, by tour or hired car.
Which of those earn their fare is on our Ponce shore excursion guide. This page is about the pier, the ride and what’s open — and, for now, what isn’t.
From the Port of Ponce into town
Primera Hora reported Icon of the Seas docking here in 2025. No berth plan for Legend of the Seas has been published, so check your ship’s docking notice.
Celebrity says ships pull in about five miles south of downtown. Discover Puerto Rico puts the historic center about 10 minutes from the port without saying how. At five miles, that means wheels, not feet.
Celebrity lists a shuttle or taxi from the port, a shore excursion, or a taxi for hire. It advises against buses if you need to be back on time.
The 1882 pavilion that became the city’s firehouse in 1885, on Plaza Las Delicias. One listing gives daily hours of 9:00 to 17:00 and no admission charge.
Open 10:00 to 16:00 on those days, with a 45-minute guided tour. The aviary, Japanese Garden and Vigía Cross are part of the visit.
The museum says it is closed until further notice and, as of October 29, gives no reopening date. Leave it out of the plan.
What's nearby, broadly
The first five are in the central plaza area, which Discover Puerto Rico calls walkable — getting there is the long part. The castle and the lookout cross share a hilltop above town.
La Guancha is the waterfront boardwalk, and it’s in flux. El Nuevo Día reported on April 30, 2026 that demolition of its damaged kiosks and buildings had begun, with a food park planned in their place. One commercial listing says a food park was open by early October; we found no second source. Recheck before you count on it.
Tibes and the coffee hacienda are drives, and the southern towns that Royal Caribbean sold tours to for Icon’s 2025 call — Guánica, Yauco, Adjuntas, Coamo, Santa Isabel — are further out.
Commonly reached from
Ponce sits outside the usual San Juan routing. For 2027, Gangwaze lists one ship, Legend of the Seas, on 6-night round trips from Fort Lauderdale. Primera Hora’s 2025 preview also named dates for Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas and Marella Cruises, so Ponce has been announced for other ships before. Confirm yours is still on. San Juan is the island’s regular cruise port; see our San Juan cruise port guide. The region sits on our Caribbean cruises hub, and you can open Ponce on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.
Planning your Ponce day
The tours, the independent options and the skips live on their own page. Read it before you buy anything through the ship.
If you’re comparing outside bookers, our Shore Excursions Group and Viator comparison covers which suits which kind of day. On a call this far from the center, a ship tour can earn its price — once the line publishes one.
Best Ponce shore excursions
Downtown on your own, the castle, a mofongo workshop, coffee country and the south coast. Here’s which ones earn the fare.

You’re on U.S. soil, and the money is dollars.
Celebrity says the currency is the U.S. dollar, ATMs dispense dollars, and credit and debit cards are widely accepted. Tipping runs 15% to 20%, and some restaurants add a service charge for larger groups.
Documents depend on the whole sailing.
Discover Puerto Rico states that American citizens and permanent residents don’t need a passport to travel to the island, and should carry a valid ID. Your cruise line sets its own paperwork for the full itinerary, so follow its travel-documents page.
Plan the ride before you land.
Celebrity says the transit system isn’t well developed and recommends a shuttle, a taxi or a tour. No taxi fare for the port-to-downtown run is published in what we read. Ask the driver for a number before you get in.
For Icon’s May 2025 call, Primera Hora reported free buses run by Royal Caribbean and the Ponce municipality. Nothing we found says the same for Legend. Ask your line.
Hours are the part to check.
Castillo Serrallés keeps Thursday to Monday hours of 10:00 to 16:00, and its tour and museum listings disagree about Wednesday. Parque de Bombas is listed at 9:00 to 17:00 daily. Tibes is listed Tuesday to Sunday, 8:30 to 15:00 — call ahead.
Hacienda Buena Vista takes guided visits by reservation, on 787-722-5882 or through paralanaturaleza.org.
Two closures to know about.
The Museo de Arte de Ponce says it is closed until further notice. And as of April 30, 2026, La Guancha’s old boardwalk buildings were being demolished for a food park. Recheck both before you go — plans like these move.
