Gaia, Ribeira or Baixa

The last night ashore, in Porto

Porto lets you sleep on the same bank as your ship. Only one of these six does it — The Yeatman, up among the Gaia lodges. The rest trade that for the old city, a rooftop pool or a palace east of the centre.

How we chose

How we picked

Most Douro ships berth on the Gaia bank, so the first test here is the bank, not the view. The Yeatman passes both: every room looks across the river to historic Porto.

Three of these hotels hold a MICHELIN Key — The Yeatman, Infante Sagres and Torel Avantgarde. The other three are five-star houses without one.

We didn't rank by rate. A late flight or an early check-in will decide more than the price does.

Embarkation day

Boarding day from Porto

  1. 01

    Boarding is late; check-out isn't

Uniworld's Porto all-aboard is 9:00 pm. Leave the bags with the hotel and give the day to the river.

  2. 02

    Taxi to Gaia with luggage

The airport metro stays on the Porto side. From any Porto-bank hotel, a taxi to the quay saves dragging cases over the bridge.

  3. 03

Confirm the quay the day before

Uniworld asks guests to verify 24 hours ahead. Do the same on any line — Quebrantões is well upriver from the main Gaia quays.
