Puerto Vallarta in brief
Puerto Vallarta's cruise terminal, run by API Puerto Vallarta, sits in Marina Vallarta — with three docking positions for ships up to about 1,000 feet, ships usually dock directly, though overflow vessels can tender when the terminal is full. Either way, the terminal is not near the city's tourist core.
The Malecón (the boardwalk) and Zona Romántica (the old-town beach neighborhood) are roughly 3–4 miles from the terminal — not a walk, in the heat, with that distance. A taxi (negotiate the fare; meters aren't standard) or the public bus covers that gap cheaply. Once you're actually downtown, the Malecón and Zona Romántica are an easy walk to each other.
This page covers the port itself — the real distance, the walk once you arrive, and the practical facts — not the specific paid excursions, which belong in their own guide as this cluster grows.
On foot from the ship
Shops and restaurants immediately at the terminal — but this isn't Puerto Vallarta's tourist core.
PV's iconic boardwalk — genuinely requires a taxi or bus from the terminal, not a walk.

What's nearby, broadly
The one planning mistake to avoid here is assuming the terminal is near the sights it's famous for — it isn't. Budget the taxi or bus trip into your time ashore before deciding how ambitious a day to plan.
What kind of day are you planning?

- Zona Romántica & Isla Cuale

- Los Arcos snorkeling

Puerto Vallarta is a common call on Mexican Riviera sailings out of Los Angeles (San Pedro) and San Diego. Seabound hasn't built full embarkation-port guides for those cities yet — a planned next phase, not a gap in this page.
Practical notes
Jalisco: Level 3 state rating, Puerto Vallarta named as an exception — see the full note below, and check travel.state.gov directly before you travel.
Jalisco, Puerto Vallarta's state, carries a State Department Level 3 ("Reconsider travel") rating overall, but Puerto Vallarta itself — along with Riviera Nayarit, Guadalajara's metro area, Chapala, and Ajijic — is explicitly named as an exception where that broader caution doesn't apply. That's a genuinely different, better-documented exemption than several of the other Mexican Riviera ports carry.
Taxis from the terminal run roughly 80–100 pesos (about $5–6 USD) to the Malecón in informal reporting we found — tag that as a general range, not a guaranteed fare, and negotiate before you get in since meters aren't standard.

Puerto Vallarta FAQ
Do ships dock or tender at Puerto Vallarta?
Usually dock — the terminal has three berths for ships up to roughly 1,000 feet. On a full day, an overflow ship can tender instead, so it isn't an absolute guarantee.
Is the Malecón walkable from the ship?
No, and this is the single most important planning fact for this port: the terminal is roughly 3–4 miles from downtown. A taxi or the public bus is genuinely required to get there.
Is Puerto Vallarta safe for a port day?
The State Department rates Jalisco Level 3 overall but explicitly exempts Puerto Vallarta itself from that caution — check travel.state.gov directly for the current advisory before you travel.
Once downtown, is it walkable?
Yes. The Malecón and Zona Romántica sit an easy walk apart once you've made the trip in from the terminal.
