Rabaul in brief
Rabaul sits on the Gazelle Peninsula in East New Britain Province, on Simpson Harbour. The harbor fills an old volcanic crater, and Holland America calls it one of the deepest in the region.
Two of the crater’s vents matter to a visitor. Tavurvur and Vulcan erupted together in 1994, and the ash buried much of the town.
The provincial capital moved to Kokopo, about 20 km (12 miles) away, and the old town lost its role as the seat of government.
Tavurvur is still active. Papua New Guinea’s tourism authority lists its last eruption as “Ongoing,” with frequent ash plumes.
Calls here are rare, and the sailings that list Rabaul lean on January. Our Rabaul shore excursion guide sorts the tours — read it before the excursion desk opens.
From the wharf into town
Cruise Critic says ships will most times dock at the wharf in the old town. Holland America and Princess don’t say dock or tender on their Rabaul pages, so your daily planner settles it.
PNG Ports lists Berth 1 at Blanche Street (122 m, about 400 ft) and Berth 2 on Bay Road (252 m, about 827 ft). Which one your ship uses isn’t published.
No walking distance is published. One planning page says walking from the port reaches the town and market, not the major sights. Ask about market access with the ship.
Princess’s tour runs 15 minutes to the observatory lookout, then 30 minutes each to Matupit, Tavurvur and the old airport. About two hours of the 3.5 are driving.
Princess warns of unpaved, bumpy, dusty roads in 18-seat minibuses with no air conditioning. If your back is touchy, take that seriously.
Tunnels and other war sites are around Kokopo, about 12 miles from the old town. That’s tour or shuttle distance — no taxi fare is published.
What's nearby, broadly
Tovanumbatir is the hill with the observatory lookout, and Holland America’s tour says the lookout is a viewpoint, not the building itself.
The hot springs are heated by an underwater vent below Tavurvur. Princess says the pools are naturally boiling, so don’t touch them.
The old airport site holds the “Air Wreck,” Japanese warplanes half-buried in ash. Kokopo and its tunnels sit further out, and Sub-Base is a reef on the harbor side for diving.
Commonly reached from
Rabaul turns up on long Pacific and world itineraries, and rarely. Cruise Critic lists Princess, Holland America’s Westerdam, Costa Deliziosa and Regent’s Seven Seas Navigator for 2027, and Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth in January 2028. Those are sailing departure dates, not call dates. Another Papua New Guinea call is Alotau, and the Australian end is covered by our Cairns cruise port guide. See the region on our Australia & New Zealand cruises hub.
Planning your Rabaul day
Tours, stop-by-stop timings and the independent question have their own page, so this one stays with the wharf, the paperwork and the money.
If you’re weighing a third-party booking, our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator explains how the two differ. Both lines’ Rabaul tours run on a clock the ship keeps — a late independent one is yours to fix.

The U.S. advisory is Level 3, Reconsider Travel.
That is a national level for Papua New Guinea. OSAC, which is part of the State Department, gave it in its country report of June 24, 2026, citing crime, civil unrest and piracy, and its June 13, 2025 embassy alert page names Level 3 outright. We could not open travel.state.gov’s own page, so read it before you commit. Neither report mentions cruise ships.
Check the entry rule before you book.
This is for ordinary U.S. passport holders. Papua New Guinea’s Immigration and Citizenship Authority says visa on arrival “is only available to selected countries,” and its 2025 visa booklet doesn’t list the United States. It tells applicants to use ica.gov.pg and not third-party sites.
The booklet doesn’t address cruise passengers. Our Cruise Atlas card, which cites travel.state.gov, says a visa or eVisa is needed. We couldn’t open that page today, so plan on a visa until the authority or your line says otherwise.
What the report says about East New Britain.
The Do Not Travel areas are Central Bougainville, particularly near the Panguna mine, and the Highlands other than Mt. Hagen and Goroka. Neither is in East New Britain.
On this province, the report says crime has spiked in parts of the New Guinea Islands region, including East and West New Britain.
Volcano status: recheck before you go.
The same report says “Recent eruptions have occurred in Bougainville, East and West New Britain, and Manam Island,” and that ash from East and West New Britain “occasionally disrupt air and ground operations at the airports in Kokopo (Rabaul/Tokua, RAB).”
Holland America calls Tovanumbatir and Tavurvur active and puts participation at your own risk. We found no current alert level from the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory. The Smithsonian record we read ends with the observatory raising Stage 1 in October 2021, which is history, not today.
PNG’s tourism authority says to check the observatory or local authorities for current activity warnings before visiting, and to go with a licensed local guide.
Carry kina, small notes.
The currency is the kina. One planning guide says to carry cash in small notes. Holland America says the Tolai village stop on its tour accepts U.S. dollars in cash. No ATM, exchange or card detail is published for the wharf.
Taxis and shuttles: nothing is published.
No taxi fare and no shuttle arrangement is published for Rabaul. Ask your line what it runs, and agree any fare, and the wait time, before you get in.
Dress for heat, ash and the village.
Light, long clothing, a hat, sunglasses and water. In ash zones the tourism authority suggests closed shoes and a cloth over your nose and mouth. January falls in the November-to-April wet season, so allow for weather delays.

Rabaul FAQ
Do cruise ships dock or tender at Rabaul?
Usually docked. Cruise Critic puts the ship at the old-town wharf "most times," and PNG Ports lists two berths that can take passenger vessels.
Your daily planner will confirm it for your sailing.
Can I walk into Rabaul from the cruise ship?
Partly. The wharf is in the old town, and one planning guide says walking reaches the town and market, not the major sights.
No walking distance is published, so ask the ship about the market.
Do U.S. citizens need a visa for Papua New Guinea on a cruise?
Plan on a visa. For ordinary U.S. passport holders, the immigration authority's booklet leaves the United States off its visa-on-arrival list and says nothing about cruise passengers.
Our Cruise Atlas card, citing travel.state.gov, says a visa or eVisa is needed. Apply only through ica.gov.pg, and ask your line what your sailing requires.
Is Rabaul safe for cruise passengers?
Level 3, Reconsider Travel, is the U.S. advisory for Papua New Guinea as a whole, per OSAC’s June 2026 report. That report also notes crime has spiked in parts of the New Guinea Islands region, including East and West New Britain.
Its Do Not Travel areas are Central Bougainville and the Highlands region outside Mt. Hagen and Goroka. Take a ship tour or a licensed guide.
Is the volcano erupting?
The tourism authority lists Tavurvur’s last eruption as “Ongoing,” and the OSAC report says recent eruptions have occurred in East and West New Britain.
No current observatory alert level turned up in our search. Recheck before you go.
What currency is used in Rabaul?
The kina. Carry small notes. The Tolai village stop on Holland America’s tour takes U.S. dollars in cash, per the line.
How long are the Rabaul ship tours?
Both published ones run about 3.5 hours. Princess’s is rated easy and Holland America’s moderate, from $149.
What should I wear ashore in Rabaul?
Light, long clothing, a hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen. Closed shoes help on ash and rough ground, and the tourism authority suggests a cloth over your nose and mouth in ash zones.
