Destination Port Guide · Salvador, Bahia

Salvador

Salvador is a two-level city, and the ship parks on the bottom one. The terminal sits in the Cidade Baixa, the Lower City by the water, and the Elevador Lacerda lifts you to the Upper City and Pelourinho for R$ 1. That part is easy. The part that strands people is paperwork — US citizens need a Brazilian visa approved before they sail, and the State Department says travelers without one can’t enter.

Salvador in brief

Salvador splits in two, and a cruise day works best when you treat it that way — the Lower City for arriving, the Upper City for the reason you came.

Ships dock at the Terminal de Passageiros do Porto de Salvador, in the Cidade Baixa. The terminal is run with Contermas, and Codeba, the federal port authority for Bahia, coordinates passenger reception with the state and the city.

The first stretch is short. A Brazilian travel blog that covers the port call puts Mercado Modelo, the craft market, about 500 m from the terminal along Avenida da França. That’s roughly a third of a mile.

The Elevador Lacerda starts from the square by the market. It has linked the Lower City with the Upper City since December 8, 1873, per Bahia Notícias, and Iphan, the national heritage institute, listed it in 2006.

The lift reopened in February 2025 after about ten months of works. The fare went from R$ 0.15 to R$ 1. Cheap, for a lift that links the two levels.

The 2026–27 season runs October to April. It opened on October 7, 2026, with the World Odyssey and runs to April 9, 2027. Local press counts 46 ship calls for Salvador.

MSC Virtuosa is one ship on the schedule — MSC is sending it on seven-night loops from Santos via Búzios, Salvador and Maceió.

Plan the second half of the day around a car. Pelourinho is on foot once you’re up the lift. The Bonfim church and the Barra lighthouse are a drive (our judgment). The beaches north of the city are a full-day trip.

Which of those deserves your hours is what our Salvador shore excursion guide works through. Read it before you book anything on board.

On foot from the ship

Docked
Terminal de Passageiros, Cidade Baixa

The terminal is in the Lower City, by the water. It has metal detectors, X-ray machines and access control, and a police post at the port handles visitor support, per local press.

∼500 m
On foot to Mercado Modelo

About a third of a mile along Avenida da França, per a Brazilian travel blog — not an official figure. NCL counts about 250 shops in the market.

R$ 1
Elevador Lacerda to the Upper City

The lift starts from the square by the market. The fare became R$ 1 after a free period at the 2025 reopening, per Bahia Notícias. SalvadorCard holders ride free.

Mar 2025 Hours
When the lift runs

Bahia Notícias listed 6:30 am to 9:30 pm on weekdays, 7 am to 9:30 pm on Saturdays and 7 am to 9 pm on Sundays and holidays. Those are 2025 figures — check on the day.

Up Top
Praça Municipal and Pelourinho

MSC’s Salvador page lists Praça Municipal, with the old governor’s palace, among the sights. It’s a natural place to start a walk. Pelourinho runs on from there, and NCL warns of cobblestones on its walking stretch.

∼28 km
To the airport

MSC’s figure, with about 40 minutes by taxi or about an hour by bus, traffic permitting. Useful if Salvador is where you board or leave.

03

What's nearby, broadly

Mercado Modelo Elevador Lacerda Praça Municipal Palácio Rio Branco Pelourinho Praça da Sé Igreja de São Francisco Igreja do Bonfim Dique do Tororó Farol da Barra Rio Vermelho

The first half of that list is walkable: the market, the lift and the Upper City squares, from Praça Municipal to Praça da Sé and the São Francisco church.

Bonfim, the Dique do Tororó with its eight large orixá figures on the water and the Farol da Barra are a drive — the Barra lighthouse sits roughly 6 km from the old center, by the same travel blog’s count.

Treat the second half as a taxi or a tour, not a stroll.

04

Commonly reached from

Salvador sits on Brazil’s northeast coast, up the coast from Rio de Janeiro. MSC Virtuosa’s 2026–27 sailings start in Santos and can also board in Salvador and Maceió, per Brazilian trade press. Local press reports MSC Divina leaving Salvador on March 17, 2027, for Civitavecchia, and Corazul’s Buenavista boarding here too. MSC Lirica and MSC Musica international itineraries are also reported to include Salvador — check your own line’s itinerary. Planning your Salvador day

This page covers the port. The tour choices — which ones need a coach, which are a lift ride, and which eat the whole day — are in their own guide.

Booking with a third party? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator explains when that makes sense, and when the ship’s tour is the safer buy.

Practical notes

Current as of October 29, 2026 Review periodically

Sort the visa before you sail. Nobody at the gangway can fix it.

The State Department says US citizens must obtain a visa before they travel to Brazil, and that travelers without visas are unable to enter. The requirement took effect on April 10, 2025.

Applications go through brazil.vfsevisa.com, which Columbia University’s travel office describes as the official Brazilian e-visa site. Foster Global reports stays of up to 90 days.

We didn’t read the current fee on an official page, so check it when you apply.

Your passport needs one month’s validity at entry and a blank page for each stamp. Brazil stamps you in and out.

The advisory is Level 2, and its warnings fit a port day.

The State Department rates Brazil Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, due to crime and kidnapping (advisory issued May 25, 2026). The US Embassy’s homepage shows the same level.

It warns about sedatives used to drug and rob tourists — don’t accept drinks from strangers. It also says not to walk on beaches after dark, and it puts favelas at Level 4, Do not travel.

The embassy site lists no consulate in Salvador — its consulates are in Recife, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre. The State Department adds that the embassy and consulates cannot help with Brazilian visa issues.

Expect vendors, and keep your ribbons to yourself.

The same travel blog warns that sellers tie Senhor do Bonfim ribbons on your wrist and then ask for money. Our advice: a polite no and a steady walk.

It also advises avoiding empty Pelourinho streets at night.

Sunday changes the plan.

NCL’s tour notes say the cathedral and Mercado Modelo close on Sundays. If your call falls on one, skip the market stop.

Fares and money: less is published than you’d hope.

No official port-to-Pelourinho taxi fare is published by a source we could read, so we don’t print one. Check fares with your driver or app before you set off.

The currency is the Brazilian real. One travel blog says ship tours are priced in US dollars.

Unless you hold a SalvadorCard, which rides the lift free, plan on paying the R$ 1 yourself.

Salvador FAQ

Can I walk from the cruise terminal to Pelourinho?

Mostly. Mercado Modelo is about 500 m from the terminal, per a Brazilian travel blog, and the Elevador Lacerda lifts you from the square there to the Upper City.

From the top, Pelourinho is on foot, and NCL’s tour notes warn of cobblestones.

How much is the Elevador Lacerda?

R$ 1 a ride, since the fare rose from R$ 0.15 when the lift reopened in 2025. SalvadorCard holders ride free.

Does Salvador tender?

Not as a rule — the sources we read describe ships docking at the passenger terminal in the Lower City. We found no berth plan by sailing, so ask on board if your berth matters.

Do US citizens need a visa for a cruise stop in Salvador?

Yes, and it has to be in hand before you leave home. The State Department’s text is general and doesn’t single out cruise passengers, so treat the visa as required for going ashore. The rule has applied since April 10, 2025.

Ask your line whether it wants proof before boarding.

Is Salvador safe for cruise passengers?

The State Department rates Brazil Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, due to crime and kidnapping. It warns about drinks spiked with sedatives and beaches after dark.

For a port day, that means busy streets, daylight and your own drinks. A ship tour is the easy way if you’d rather not manage it yourself.

How far is the airport from the cruise port?

About 28 km, per MSC, which puts the taxi ride at about 40 minutes and the bus at about an hour, depending on traffic.

Which cruise ships call at Salvador in 2026–27?

MSC Virtuosa is on the schedule, on seven-night loops from Santos. The season opened October 7, 2026, with the World Odyssey and runs to April 9, 2027, with 46 calls counted for Salvador.

Other lines may call too. Check your line’s own itinerary for the date.

What’s closed in Salvador on a Sunday?

NCL says the cathedral and Mercado Modelo close on Sundays. The lift ran 7 am to 9 pm on Sundays in the 2025 hours we found.
