Destination Port Guide · Shimizu (Mt. Fuji)

Shimizu

Lines sell Shimizu as the Mt. Fuji port, and on a clear morning the mountain does hang over the harbor. The ship docks at Hinode, in Shizuoka City’s Shimizu ward — the Fuji in the photos is a long drive inland. What you can do without a coach is closer in: a waterfront mall an easy walk away, a water bus to the pine beach at Miho, and a hilltop shrine 20 minutes up by car.

Shimizu in brief

Shimizu is a working harbor on Suruga Bay, folded into Shizuoka City, and the cruise pier sits right in its old port district.

Japan’s Tourism Agency lists two cruise berths, Hinode #1 and Hinode #2, at 9-25 Hinode-cho, and two ships can tie up at once.

The name on your itinerary is a promise about the view, not the distance.

On a clear day you see Fuji from the deck as you sail in — and from the waterfront, the beach at Miho and the Nihondaira plateau above town. Getting onto the mountain is a separate, much longer day, not a side trip: tours that reach the Fifth Station are sold as all-day trips, about 10 hours for one private version.

Weather decides more here than at most ports. Fuji hides in cloud for much of the summer and early fall, and a forecast-model archive scores winter mornings as the clearest window on the south side, where Shimizu sits.

The close-in day is the stronger plan for most people, not the consolation prize.

S-Pulse Dream Plaza, a waterfront mall with a Ferris wheel and a sushi street, is a few minutes’ walk from the gangway. A water bus crosses the harbor to Miho in about 15 minutes for a flat 700 yen.

Miho no Matsubara, the pine-lined black-sand shore, is part of the Fuji World Heritage listing. Kunozan Toshogu, the burial place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, is reached by ropeway from Nihondaira.

Which of those tours earn the fare, and which spend most of the day driving you toward a mountain in a cloud, is the job of our Shimizu shore excursion guide. Check it before you commit to the long coach.

What's nearby, broadly

S-Pulse Dream Plaza Shimizu Sushi Alley Kashi no Ichi fish market Miho no Matsubara Miho Shirube Nihondaira Yume Terrace Kunozan Toshogu Sumpu Castle Park Shizuoka Sengen Shrine Mt. Fuji World Heritage Centre Shiraito Falls Mt. Fuji Fifth Station

The first two are an easy walk. Kashi no Ichi sits by JR Shimizu Station, about five minutes from its east exit, and roughly 20 minutes on foot from the pier by one traveler’s timing. Miho is a water bus or a bus ride. Nihondaira and Kunozan need a car or a tour; Sumpu Castle and Sengen Shrine are in central Shizuoka, about 13 minutes by JR train from Shimizu Station. The last three are the Fuji side of the list — Fujinomiya, the falls and the mountain road — and they’re the reason the full-day tours run so long.

Planning your Shimizu day

Choosing between the long Fuji coach and the shorter Miho-and-Nihondaira loop has its own page. This one sticks to the pier and the practical side.

Practical notes

Current as of October 23, 2026 Review periodically

Japanese yen — and carry some cash, not just cards.

Local buses take nationwide IC transit cards and collect the fare as you get off. Carry some yen for market stalls and small shops — and draw it before you go ashore if you can.

A free shuttle has run to Shimizu Station — confirm it on board.

A 2025 traveler report describes a complimentary shuttle from the pier to JR Shimizu Station, a ride of about 25 minutes. The Japan Tourism Agency’s port page doesn’t list one, so treat it as a call-by-call service, not a fixture.

Taxis here are often chartered by the hour, not hailed by the ride.

Chartered taxis seat up to four. Published rates in that same report start around 11,000 yen for about 1.5 hours, enough for Miho or Nihondaira, and reach about 43,700 yen for six hours to Shiraito Falls, with tolls and parking included. No metered fare from the pier is posted.

Tourist information is at the terminal and at the station.

The Shimizu Station tourist information center opens daily 9:00 to 17:45, with a lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00.

Getting to Fuji on your own isn’t simple.

The city’s November 2025 Shimizu map lists the Fuji Kyuko stop, the bus toward the Fuji Five Lakes, as out of service. A DIY Fuji day from here means a train-and-bus chain or a car.

The US advisory is Level 1 — normal precautions.

The State Department’s Japan advisory, issued May 15, 2025, says exercise normal precautions. It also warns that US prescriptions aren’t honored and some common medications are banned, so check yours before the trip.

US citizens visit Japan visa-free for up to 90 days. On a designated ship, the line arranges a cruise landing permit instead — your cruise line will tell you which applies.

Typhoon season is summer to fall.

Typhoons can reroute a call outright, and the water bus and harbor cruise cancel for rough seas. Keep a land-based plan in your pocket, so a cancelled boat doesn’t cancel the day.

Shimizu FAQ

Can I walk from the cruise ship into Shimizu?

To the waterfront, yes. S-Pulse Dream Plaza is about eight minutes on foot, and the water bus leaves from Hinode too.

JR Shimizu Station and the Kashi no Ichi market are further, roughly 20 minutes’ walk.

Does Shimizu tender?

No. Ships dock at the Hinode #1 and #2 berths beside the passenger terminal.

How far is Mt. Fuji from the Shimizu cruise port?

Far enough to fill the whole day, not a morning. Tours that include the Fifth Station are sold as all-day trips — about 10 hours for one private version.

A six-hour tour can reach the Fuji World Heritage Centre in Fujinomiya and still fit Miho and Kunozan.

Can I see Mt. Fuji from the ship?

On a clear day, yes — as you sail into Suruga Bay and from the harbor. Cloud often hides it, especially from June to October.

Is there a shuttle from the Shimizu cruise pier?

A free shuttle to JR Shimizu Station has run on some calls, about a 25-minute ride by one 2025 account. It isn’t on the official port listing, so ask on board.

How do I get to Miho no Matsubara?

The quickest route is the water bus from Hinode to Miho, about 15 minutes for 700 yen. A bus from Shimizu Station takes about 25 minutes, then a 15-minute walk.

What currency is used in Shimizu?

Japanese yen. Local buses accept IC transit cards; keep cash for small shops and market stalls.

Is Shimizu safe for cruise passengers?

The State Department rates Japan Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in an advisory issued May 15, 2025.

Bring prescriptions in original packaging and check that each medication is legal in Japan.
