Temple road, town or paddies

The Angkor nights, in Siem Reap

Every hotel on this list holds a MICHELIN Key, and none is anywhere near a ship. In Siem Reap you're choosing a base for Angkor — the temple road, the centre or the rice fields outside town.

How we chose

How we chose

There's no river to sleep beside here. The ship is hours away at Kampong Cham or in Phnom Penh, so we chose for the temples, the pool and a rating we trust.

All six hold MICHELIN Keys — two each for Amansara and Zannier Phum Baitang, one for the other four.

The order isn't a ranking by price. Distance matters more: the airport is about 50 km out, and the rice-field hotel adds to that.

The grand colonial pick, on the road to the temples. Book it for the pool and the cage lift as much as the location.

Leaving for the ship

Before the coach, or after it

  1. 01

    Count the airport drive

Siem Reap-Angkor International is about 50 km from town, 60–90 minutes by road. The official shuttle is $8; a private car starts around $35.

  2. 02

Buy the Angkor pass after 5:00 pm

The main ticket office is open 5:00 am–5:30 pm, and tickets bought after 5:00 pm are valid from the next day. That frees the morning for an early start.

  3. 03

    Scenic's coach leaves early

It meets at 8:30 am on boarding day, and Scenic asks you to land before 7:30 am. On Scenic, book a night in town first.
