Silver Nova
& Silver Ray

Silversea calls this the Evolution class internally, and that is the truer name. These are the first ships in the fleet that can lie alongside a small harbor town for a full day and emit nothing at all.

The quiet ships

Silver Nova was delivered from Meyer Werft on 20 July 2023, and Silver Ray was handed over at Eemshaven on 14 May 2024 and christened in Lisbon the following month. They are the biggest ships Silversea has ever run: 54,700 gross tons, 728 guests, 364 suites, 556 crew. On most fleets that would be the whole story — the new flagships, larger than what came before.

The more interesting fact is what happens when they stop. Between them the class carries a four-megawatt fuel-cell system and a battery bank, and the combination lets these ships operate emission-free while in port. Not reduced. Not offset. A fuel cell makes electricity through a chemical reaction instead of burning fuel, so with the engines off there is no exhaust and almost no noise. Across the whole system the builder puts the greenhouse-gas reduction at around forty percent against a conventional ship.

For a line built on small harbors, that changes something real. The uncomfortable truth about luxury cruising has always been that the ship idles in the pretty places it came to admire, running generators so the air conditioning stays on. These two do not have to. It is the rare case of an environmental specification that a guest can actually notice, from a balcony, in the quiet.

The first ships in this fleet that can sit in a beautiful place without contributing anything to it.

Where we would sound a note of caution

The forty percent figure is the builder's, and we report it as such rather than as an independently verified result. What is not in question is the hardware: a four-megawatt fuel cell is either installed or it is not, and on this class it is. Judge the claim on the equipment rather than on the adjective.

Christened in Lisbon on 12 June 2024. Identical to Nova in tonnage, guest count and propulsion — a true sister.

There is no meaningful difference between the two, which makes this the simplest choice in the fleet: take whichever is sailing the itinerary you want. Both carry the S.A.L.T. culinary program, both carry the Otium wellness concept, and both carry the same fuel-cell and battery arrangement.

Where the class sits against the rest of the fleet is the decision that actually matters. At 54,700 tons these are nearly twice the size of the Millennium pair and around a third larger than a Muse. That buys you the widest spread of restaurants, the largest suites and the most public space Silversea offers. It also means the smallest harbors are harder to enter, and 728 fellow guests instead of 388.

What the hybrid chain actually does

What the hybrid chain actually does

Why the engineering matters to a guest

Environmental specifications usually belong in an annual report. On this class they change what the ship is allowed to do, and where it is welcome. Four links in the chain.

Who should book this class

Book Nova or Ray
  • You want the latest and largest ships Silversea operates, with the widest choice of restaurants and the biggest suites
  • The environmental engineering genuinely matters to you, and you would rather it were hardware than a brochure page
  • You want the S.A.L.T. culinary program and the Otium wellness concept in their fullest form
  • You are traveling as a wider group and want room for everyone to disperse during sea days
  • Long stays in a handful of ports appeal more than a new harbor every morning
Look at another class
  • Your itinerary is dense with very small ports — the Millennium pair at 28,258 tons get closer to more of them
  • You would rather sail with a few hundred guests than seven hundred and twenty-eight
  • You want the fleet's gentlest fares; the latest ships are the most expensive way to buy Silversea
  • You are going to the Galápagos or the poles, which need the expedition quartet instead
  • You prefer a ship that feels like a private club to one that feels like a very good small hotel

Questions we are actually asked

How big are Silver Nova and Silver Ray?

Both are 54,700 gross tons carrying 728 guests in 364 suites with 556 crew — the largest ships Silversea has operated. Silver Nova was delivered by Meyer Werft on 20 July 2023 and Silver Ray followed in May 2024, christened in Lisbon that June.

Can Silver Nova really produce zero emissions in port?

Silversea and the builder state that the class can operate emission-free while in port, using a four-megawatt fuel-cell system together with a battery bank. A fuel cell generates electricity through a chemical reaction rather than combustion, so with the engines off there is no exhaust. Across the whole system the stated greenhouse-gas reduction is around forty percent against a conventional ship — that figure is the builder's, not an independent measurement.

What is the difference between Silver Nova and Silver Ray?

Nothing material. They are sister ships with identical tonnage, guest capacity, suite count and propulsion. Nova arrived in July 2023 and Ray in May 2024. Choose between them on itinerary and price.

What is the Evolution class?

It is Silversea's internal name for what most people call the Nova class — Silver Nova and Silver Ray. The name refers to the hybrid propulsion and environmental technology that distinguishes these two from every earlier ship in the fleet.

Is the Nova class too big for Silversea?

It depends what you came for. At 728 guests these ships are nearly twice the size of Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper, which means more restaurants, larger suites and more public space — but also less access to the smallest harbors and more people aboard. If small-ship intimacy is the reason you were looking at Silversea, the Millennium class is the more faithful answer.

Do Nova and Ray have S.A.L.T.?

Yes. Both carry S.A.L.T. — Sea and Land Taste, Silversea's destination-led culinary program — alongside the Otium wellness concept. The program is on the newer ships rather than on the older Millennium-class pair.
