St. Barts in brief
There’s no cruise pier in Gustavia, so you come ashore by tender, the way the big yachts do.
Ships drop anchor outside the harbor and ferry guests in to the marina, which WhatsInPort places at the center of town. The port’s own director has said the same of large yachts — anything big anchors outside and comes in by launch.
The callers are small, high-end ships, not megaships.
The December 2026 schedule shows five calls, from Regent, Crystal, Oceania and Azamara. February 2027 lists one.
Gustavia itself is a harbor town of boutiques, galleries and terraces, and it keeps traces of its Swedish past in its layout and buildings. Sweden held the island from 1785 until it went back to France in 1878, and the town is named for King Gustaf.
The Wall House museum is free, and it’s out on the Pointe de Gustavia.
It covers the Swedish years, salt-making, the sea and straw craft, and it closes for a long lunch — plan for that, not around it.
Shell Beach is the beach you can walk to, and the tourism board puts it about 5 minutes from the center of town.
The rest of the island is a ride, not a walk.
Saint-Jean, Saline, Flamands and the Cul-de-Sac lagoons sit over the hills, and Colombier has no road at all. Which of those trips earn their fare is in our St. Barts shore excursion guide — check it before you book anything onboard.
On foot from the Gustavia tender landing
Launches land at the marina on the harbor front, among the cafes and bars. Ships set their own tender schedules, so check the times onboard, not online.
Shells and pebbles underfoot, not soft sand, and the tourism board says you can swim and have lunch by the water.
At the Pointe de Gustavia. Weekdays 9:30 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 19:00, Wednesday from 14:00, Saturday 9:30 to 13:00.
Swedish batteries above the bay, with views back over the harbor. The Fort Gustav battery dates from 1787.
Close to the port, with calm water and the island’s sailing school — a working shoreline, not a postcard one.
Saint-Jean, Saline, Flamands and the Cul-de-Sac lagoons are over the hills. Agree the fare before you get in.
What's nearby, broadly
The first five are walkable from the tender. Corossol, a traditional village beside a small port, is a taxi ride rather than a walk.
Saint-Jean, which the Eden Rock hotel splits in two, sits beside the airport — the tourism board warns you to stay out of the planes’ way at that end. Colombier is reached only by boat or by footpath from La Petite Anse, past Flamands. Saline and Gouverneur are quieter and more remote, and Grand Cul-de-Sac’s shallow, clear lagoon is where the tourism board sends you for water sports.
Commonly reached from
St. Barts sits on Eastern Caribbean and Leeward Islands routes, a short hop from St. Maarten, with St. Kitts and Antigua further south. It’s a small-ship port. Atlas Ocean Voyages’ World Navigator and Windstar’s Star Pride call in October 2026; December brings Regent’s Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Mariner, Crystal Symphony, Oceania’s Marina and Azamara Journey. Crystal Symphony is back on February 14, 2027. Windstar’s October call runs about 8:00 to 22:00 — a long day ashore, if the tenders cooperate. See the region on our Caribbean cruises hub, or open St. Barts on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.
Planning your St. Barts day
Which tours to book, which to skip and which to do yourself are on a separate page. This one covers the harbor, the town and the rules.
If you’re booking outside the ship, our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator explains how the two differ — worth reading before you trust a third-party boat on a tender day, when the last launch back sets your deadline.

Bring a passport, not just a birth certificate.
St. Barts is French, and the State Department gives it its own entry page. It asks US citizens for a passport valid six months beyond arrival, with one blank page, and notes the 12-page emergency passport isn’t accepted for France.
No visa is needed under three months, but you may be asked for proof of lodging and onward travel. Follow your cruise line’s document rule for the whole itinerary as well — it covers the whole voyage, not this island alone.
Arriving through St. Maarten instead? Its electronic border form has to be done online before you travel.
Euros, with dollars taken at the merchant’s rate.
The euro is the currency. The State Department says US dollars are commonly accepted, but each shop sets its own exchange rate — so check the math at the till, not later on your statement.
Taxi fares are set by the island, and they rose in 2024.
The territorial council adopted a new fare grid in October 2024, to run until a review in 2028. The island’s newspaper quoted the drivers’ association: fares on some journeys went from €25 to €30, and from €40 to €55.
We couldn’t find the full route-by-route grid published online. Taxis wait at a rank, and WhatsInPort warns they’re pricey, especially on Sundays and holidays — agree the fare before you go.
A local transport guide counts about 30 licensed taxis and no public bus or Uber. When a full tender lands at once, that can mean a wait at the rank, on our reading.
Safety is mostly about the water and the roads.
The State Department notes petty theft such as purse snatching, riskier night driving on rural and hilly roads, and dengue — pack repellent, and dial 112 in an emergency. The State Department rates the French West Indies, explicitly including Saint Barthélemy, Level 1: exercise normal precautions. That is a territorial advisory, separate from metropolitan France’s, confirmed October 29, 2026 — recheck if you’re reading this later.
The sea around the island is a marine park.
The reserve has covered about 12 square kilometers of water since 1996, Colombier included. Commercial boats need its authorization to operate, which is one reason to book with a known operator.

The full taxi grid isn’t published online that we could find, so we don’t quote route fares.

St. Barts FAQ
Do cruise ships dock or tender at St. Barts?
They tender: ships anchor outside Gustavia harbor, and launches bring guests in to the marina at the center of town.
The ship sets the tender schedule, so check the last launch time before you plan a long lunch.
Can I walk from the tender into Gustavia?
Yes — you land in the middle of it. The shops, the harbor front and the Wall House museum are all within a short walk.
Is there a beach near the Gustavia tender landing?
Shell Beach. The tourism board calls it the beach closest to the center, about 5 minutes away; WhatsInPort says about 10 from the tender pier.
Expect shells and pebbles underfoot; the tourism board says lunch by the water is possible.
How much is a taxi on St. Barts?
Fares follow a grid the island adopted in October 2024, and reported examples run €30 and €55 on certain journeys.
The full grid isn’t online, so agree the price first, and expect more on Sundays and holidays.
Do I need a passport for St. Barts?
The State Department’s page asks US citizens for a passport valid six months past arrival, with a blank page. No visa is needed under three months.
Your cruise line’s document rule for the full voyage is the one to follow.
Do they take US dollars on St. Barts?
Commonly, yes — but the euro is the currency, and merchants set their own exchange rate. Know what you’re being charged in euros before you hand over dollars.
Can I get to Colombier Beach from the ship?
Yes, by boat or on foot — the tourism board says it’s reached only by boat or by trail from La Petite Anse.
Cruise lines sell catamaran trips there; the trail means a taxi out to the trailhead first.
Is the Wall House museum open when ships are in?
On most weekdays, yes: it opens 9:30 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 19:00, Wednesday from 14:00, Saturday mornings, and it’s closed Sunday. Entry is free.
