Destination Port Guide · Kingstown, St. Vincent

St. Vincent

Kingstown is a working capital, not a resort town — and the cruise terminal sits right at its edge. The market and downtown are about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the pier. Fort Charlotte and the Botanic Gardens are short taxi rides, the waterfalls and rainforest trails are an hour or more inland, and Bequia is a ferry away. Your day turns on how far from the pier you want to go.

St. Vincent in brief

St. Vincent is the big green island at the top of the Grenadines chain, and Kingstown is its capital.

Ships berth at the Kingstown Cruise Terminal, on the harbor at the edge of town. The tourism minister has described it as a port that can berth two ships at a time, and a port guide says a third ship that day anchors and tenders.

The walk into town is short, not scenic.

One cruise port guide puts downtown and the market about 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the pier. Kingstown is a place people work and shop — expect traffic, vans and errands, not a polished shopping strip.

For a lot of visitors that’s the appeal — a real capital, not a port built around ships.

The famous sights start just outside the center.

Fort Charlotte, completed in 1806, sits on a hilltop over the harbor on the far side of town. The Botanic Gardens, laid out in 1765, cover about 20 acres — Royal Caribbean calls them the oldest botanical garden in the Western Hemisphere.

Both are a short cab ride, and you can pair them in a morning.

Everything else on the island is a drive.

Dark View Falls is on the leeward coast, about 75 minutes by road, and the Vermont Nature Trail sits in the valleys northeast of Kingstown. Bequia, the first of the Grenadines, is about an hour by ferry.

Which of those trips earn their place on a port day is sorted out in our St. Vincent shore excursion guide — read it before you book.

On foot from the Kingstown Cruise Terminal

Docked
Kingstown Cruise Terminal

Two berths at the harbor’s edge, with taxis waiting outside. When a third ship is in, it anchors offshore and runs tenders, so check which one you’re on.

10–15 min
Downtown and the market

The center and the market are a short walk from the pier. Carry small bills — many shops don’t take cards.

Taxi up
Fort Charlotte

Completed in 1806, on the hill on the far side of town — a ride up, not a stroll. One guide suggests walking back down.

US$2
Botanic Gardens

About 10 minutes by taxi, founded in 1765 and roughly 20 acres. Civitatis lists entry at US$2, and about 45 minutes covers the core.

About 1 hr
The ferry to Bequia

Ferries run to Port Elizabeth on Bequia. One travel guide lists a one-way ticket at EC$25, paid at the pier — we couldn’t confirm it with the operator.

15 min drive
Villa Beach

The beach port guides tend to suggest, about 15 minutes by taxi. Shared transfers start around $10 a person.

What's nearby, broadly

Kingstown Market Downtown Kingstown Fort Charlotte Botanic Gardens Villa Beach Black Point Tunnel Vermont Nature Trail Dark View Falls La Soufrière Bequia Port Elizabeth Tobago Cays

The market and downtown are on foot. Fort Charlotte, the gardens and Villa Beach are each a short taxi ride.

Dark View Falls is up the leeward coast at Chateaubelair, about 75 minutes away, and the Vermont trail is inland to the northeast. La Soufrière, the volcano, sits in the north of the island — a separate expedition, not something we’d bolt onto a port day. Bequia is about an hour by boat; the Tobago Cays are much further south and sit outside a normal call.

St. Vincent sits on Southern Caribbean routes, between Barbados, St. Lucia and Grenada. The 2026-27 season’s steadiest caller is MSC World Europa, on loops from Fort-de-France, Pointe-à-Pitre and Bridgetown from December through April. Virgin’s Valiant Lady is scheduled for March 23, 2027 from San Juan, 8:00 to 17:00, and Celebrity has sailings from Fort Lauderdale in January and March 2027. TUI’s Mein Schiff ships, Costa Fascinosa, Regent’s Seven Seas Mariner and the tall ship Royal Clipper also appear on the season’s schedules. Practical notes

Current as of October 28, 2026 Review periodically

Eastern Caribbean dollars, and cash matters here.

The EC dollar is the official currency, and the State Department warns that many places don’t accept credit cards and that ATMs are frequently out of order and may charge high fees.

US dollars are widely taken in tourist spots, one port guide says, but change may come back in EC dollars. Bring small US bills from home — cash, not a card, is what works at the market stalls.

Taxis don’t usually run meters, so agree the price first.

The State Department says meters typically aren’t used and fares should be agreed in advance. One transport guide says the government fixes the fares — but we found no current fare schedule from the terminal online, and we won’t guess at one.

Settle the number, and whether it’s per person or per car, before you get in. The State Department’s advice is to use clearly marked taxis only, with an “H” plate, and it notes Uber and Lyft aren’t available.

Local minivans with an “H” on the plate run from the bus terminal by the New Kingstown Fish Market. One guide calls them much cheaper than taxis, and warns that some drivers are reckless.

Paperwork: read your cruise line’s rule.

The State Department lists an Electronic Travel Authorization, completed online before travel, for US citizens entering St. Vincent, plus a valid passport. It also says cruise passengers may use another WHTI-compliant document.

Ask your line whether it handles the ETA for passengers on your sailing — don’t assume it does.

Safety: Level 1, with ordinary care.

The current advisory, issued July 7, 2026, is Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions. It flags petty theft and car break-ins, and advises against walking alone at night, on beaches or in poorly lit areas.

The terminal has had a rough few years.

After Hurricane Beryl damaged the main cargo pier in 2024, the Port Authority used the cruise terminal for cargo, and a damaged vehicle carrier at the berth led P&O’s Aurora to cancel a November 2024 call. Check your line’s port notes close to sailing — berth plans here have changed at short notice before.

No official taxi fare schedule, ferry-operator fare or tourism-board opening hours could be confirmed online; the garden and falls fees come from a tour reseller’s listings.

St. Vincent FAQ

Where do cruise ships dock in St. Vincent?

At the Kingstown Cruise Terminal, on the harbor in the capital. It takes two ships at a time.

If a third ship is in port the same day, it anchors and tenders passengers ashore.

Can I walk from the ship into Kingstown?

Yes. Downtown and the market are about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the pier.

Fort Charlotte is a different story — it’s uphill on the far side of town, so take a taxi up.

Does St. Vincent tender?

Usually not. Ships dock at the terminal’s two berths, and tendering comes in when more ships are in than berths.

Is there a beach near the Kingstown cruise terminal?

Not in town. Villa Beach is the one port guides tend to suggest, about 15 minutes away by taxi.

How do I get to Bequia from the cruise port?

By ferry to Port Elizabeth, about an hour each way. One recent guide lists the one-way fare at EC$25, paid at the pier.

It only works on a long call — check the return sailing time against your all-aboard before you buy.

How much is a taxi in St. Vincent?

Taxis usually don’t run meters, and we found no current fare schedule from the terminal online. Agree the price, and whether it’s per person, before you set off.

Do I need a passport and ETA for St. Vincent?

The State Department lists a valid passport and an Electronic Travel Authorization for US citizens, and says cruise passengers may use another WHTI-compliant document.

Follow your cruise line’s instructions for your sailing, not a general checklist.

Is Kingstown safe for cruise passengers?

The State Department rates St. Vincent and the Grenadines Level 1, its lowest advisory, as of July 2026. Petty theft happens, so keep valuables close and stay off empty beaches after dark.
