Trafalgar

The Tollman family privately owned Trafalgar's parent company for more than a century. On October 31, 2024, Apollo Global Management bought it. That's a genuine, recent change of control worth knowing before you assume "family-owned" still describes who's actually running things.

How Trafalgar scores

TTC's flagship, mainstream-tier brand — positioned between Costsaver's budget coach touring and Insight Vacations' premium tier within the same corporate family. Its scores reflect that middle position.

Independence from conglomerates1

Two honest notes. Independence from conglomerates scores about as low as it can — Trafalgar isn't just part of a larger corporate family, that family itself changed hands from a 104-year-old family business to a global private equity firm in 2024, a genuinely bigger structural shift than most operators on our comparison have gone through. Local/cultural access scores well because Be My Guest experiences are built into standard itineraries rather than sold separately, a real and specific inclusion rather than a marketing phrase.

02

104 years of family ownership, until October 2024

Trafalgar's parent company was one of travel's last major family-run holdouts — until it wasn't.

Trafalgar's parent, The Travel Corporation (TTC), was founded in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1920 by Stanley Tollman and remained privately owned and run by the Tollman family for more than a century. That changed on October 31, 2024, when Apollo Global Management completed its acquisition of TTC. TTC's chairman, Brett Tollman, said the sale reflected a succession decision — there was no next generation of the family ready to lead the company. One notable carve-out: The Red Carnation Hotel Collection was not part of the sale and remains separately under Tollman family stewardship.

What this means practically: Trafalgar is now a portfolio company of a major global private equity firm, alongside the rest of TTC's brands — Contiki, Costsaver, Insight Vacations, Luxury Gold, and Uniworld river cruises among others. That doesn't necessarily change what a Trafalgar trip looks like day to day, but it's worth knowing when a company's marketing still leans on heritage and family history that the actual ownership changed recently and substantially.

03

Be My Guest, and the Travel Director model

Trafalgar's signature inclusion is Be My Guest — a hosted meal with a local family, farm, or small producer, built into many itineraries rather than sold as an optional excursion. It's the kind of access that's genuinely hard to arrange independently: a pasta-making afternoon with a family in Tuscany, dinner at a Basque grill house, a drumming class in a Swazi village. Every Trafalgar trip is led by a Travel Director for the full itinerary, supported by local specialists and guides at each stop.

04

Two genuinely different group-size products

Trafalgar isn't one group size — it's two distinct products with very different scales. Standard tours vary by region: Europe averages 40 to 45 guests, US and Canada trips run up to 52, Australia and New Zealand up to 50, Latin America 40 to 45, Asia up to 28, and Africa up to 20. Separately, Trafalgar's Small Group Tours — a genuinely different product line, not just a smaller version of the same trip — average 16 guests with a cap of 18, spanning 22 itineraries across five continents. If group intimacy matters to your decision, check specifically whether the itinerary you want is a Small Group Tour or a standard departure, since the difference in scale is substantial.

05

Solo travelers — room share is the reliable benefit

Trafalgar gives solo travelers two main options. On nearly all tours, you can choose a same-sex room share and pay the twin-share price rather than a single supplement — matched with another solo traveler, two beds, no extra charge. This option isn't available on trips to Asia, Africa, or the Eastern Mediterranean, so check your specific destination first. If you want your own room, single supplements apply, though Trafalgar offers reduced supplements on select departures and itineraries. Those discounts vary by trip and date, so treat them as departure-specific pricing rather than a standing no-supplement policy.

06

Who Trafalgar fits — and who should look elsewhere

Book it if

You want genuine local access — Be My Guest experiences — built into a mainstream, widely available escorted tour rather than a niche small-group product. You're comfortable with a larger group and want broad destination coverage across nearly 300 itineraries, or you specifically want the smaller Small Group Tours line instead. You're traveling solo and comfortable with a same-sex room share to avoid the supplement. Or corporate ownership doesn't factor into your decision and you're focused purely on the itinerary and price.

07

If you asked us to pick

Our take

If Be My Guest experiences and Travel Director-led touring genuinely appeal to you, Trafalgar delivers that at a more accessible scale and price than several ultra-luxury operators on our comparison. If you're traveling solo and don't mind a roommate, the room-share option is the more reliable way to avoid the supplement than hoping for a discounted rate on your specific departure. And if independence from a larger corporate structure matters to your decision, know that this is no longer really available at Trafalgar specifically — the whole TTC family changed hands in 2024, so the same applies across its sister brands too.

Quick answers

Who owns Trafalgar now?

Apollo Global Management, through Apollo Funds, which acquired Trafalgar's parent company, The Travel Corporation (TTC), on October 31, 2024. The Tollman family had privately owned TTC since 1920 — more than a century — and stepped back from ownership because there was no next generation ready to lead it. The Tollmans kept The Red Carnation Hotel Collection separately; it wasn't part of the sale.

How big are Trafalgar tour groups?

It depends on the product. Standard tours vary by region: Europe averages 40 to 45 guests, US and Canada trips run up to 52, Australia and New Zealand up to 50, Latin America 40 to 45, Asia up to 28, and Africa up to 20. Separately, Trafalgar's Small Group Tours average 16 guests with a cap of 18 — a genuinely different, more intimate product, not just a smaller version of the standard trip.

Does Trafalgar have solo traveler discounts?

On nearly all tours, solo travelers can choose a same-sex room share and pay the twin-share price rather than a single supplement — not available on trips to Asia, Africa, or the Eastern Mediterranean. If you want your own room, single supplements apply, though Trafalgar offers reduced supplements on select departures and itineraries. Treat those discounts as departure-specific pricing rather than a standing no-supplement policy.

What is Trafalgar's Be My Guest experience?

A hosted meal with a local family, farm, or small producer, built into many Trafalgar itineraries rather than sold as an optional add-on — Trafalgar's own signature way of getting travelers past standard sightseeing into an actual local home or business.

Is Trafalgar part of a larger travel group?

Yes — Trafalgar is one of TTC's brands, alongside Contiki, Costsaver, Insight Vacations, Luxury Gold, and Uniworld river cruises among others. All of TTC (apart from the separately held Red Carnation Hotel Collection) is now owned by Apollo Global Management.
