Islands of Adventure

The resort’s thrill park is built as a ring of islands around a lagoon — you circle the water and cross a bridge into a different world each time. It pairs the best coasters on the property with the original Hogsmeade, and its landscaping is as much the attraction as its rides.

A park you circle, not cross

Islands of Adventure is a single loop of walkway around one lagoon, with a different world at every bend.

Where most parks fan lands off a hub, this one strings them along a ring. From Port of Entry you pick a direction and circle the water, crossing a bridge into each island in turn — comic-book Marvel, cartoon Toon Lagoon, the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, the snow-roofed Hogsmeade, the storybook of Seuss Landing. There is no shortcut across the middle; the lagoon is the point.

It is also the resort’s thrill park and, for many, its most beautiful. The rockwork, the planting and the forced-perspective architecture do as much work as the rides — and the rides here are the biggest on the property, from VelociCoaster to Hagrid’s. The plate draws the loop the way you actually walk it.

      Marvel Super Hero Island
1999 · the resort’s oldest thrills The loud, primary-coloured front of the loop, and still home to two of the best rides Universal ever built. The Hulk's launch and Spider-Man's dark ride have aged into classics; the rest is 1999 vintage. Rides: The Incredible Hulk Coaster (Launched steel coaster · 54″), The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man (3D motion dark ride · 40″), Doctor Doom’s Fearfall (Launch/drop tower · 52″), Storm Force Accelatron (Spinning flat ride · no minimum) Food: Captain America Diner (Burgers & A/C refuge), Café 4 (Pizza & pasta) Hulk still hits. A 1999 coaster re-tracked in 2016 that rides like new — one of the best in Florida. Spider-Man is the sleeper the whole industry copied.
      Toon Lagoon
Comic-strip country · bring a change of clothes The wettest corner of any Universal park. Two water rides here will genuinely drench you — not a splash, a soaking — so this is a hot-afternoon island, not a first-thing one. Rides: Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls (Flume with a big drop · 44″), Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges (River rapids · 42″), Me Ship, The Olive (Kids’ play ship · no minimum) Food: Comic Strip Cafe (The most varied quick menu), Blondie’s (Deli & hot dogs) You will get soaked. Ride these two in the afternoon heat, pack a poncho or a spare shirt, and don't put a phone anywhere it can drown.
      Jurassic Park
Isla Nublar, by the lagoon Lush, green and anchored by the best coaster on the property. One of its two rides is the star of the park; the other, the classic river ride, is dark for a long refurbishment through most of 2026. Rides: Jurassic World VelociCoaster (Launched coaster · 51″ · 70 mph), Jurassic Park River Adventure (Water dark ride · closed for 2026 refurb), Pteranodon Flyers (Kids’ glider · 36–56″), Camp Jurassic (Play area · no minimum) Food: Pizza Predattoria (Quick slices beside the coaster), Thunder Falls Terrace (Closed — 2027 table-service conversion) VelociCoaster is the reason to rope-drop this island. The River Adventure is closed for a long overhaul in 2026 — check before you promise it to anyone.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade
2010 · the first Wizarding World The land that changed theme parks, snowed roofs and all. It holds the hardest ride to get on in the legacy parks and the castle dark ride that started it — plus the train to Diagon Alley. Rides: Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure (Launched coaster · 48″ · the park’s longest line), Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (Castle dark ride · 48″), Flight of the Hippogriff (Family coaster · 36″), Hogwarts Express (To Diagon Alley · park-to-park) Food: Three Broomsticks (The best-themed quick-service), The Hog’s Head (Butterbeer & brews) Hagrid’s takes no Express, and its single-rider line comes and goes with capacity — rope drop it or ride it during early admission, full stop. It is the single hardest ride to get on at either original park.
      Seuss Landing
The book, in three dimensions The gentlest, most colourful island — nothing straight-edged, everything from the page. It's where the smallest members of the party get a real turn, and it hides one of the park's best snacks. Rides: The Cat in the Hat (Family dark ride · 36″), Caro-Seuss-el (Themed carousel · no minimum), One Fish, Two Fish… (Spinner, can get wet · no minimum), High in the Sky Trolley (Elevated ride · 40″) Food: Green Eggs and Ham Cafe (Famous loaded tots), Circus McGurkus (Themed food hall) The Green Eggs and Ham tots are a sleeper — one of the best cheap snacks in the park, in the island everyone under-rates because it looks like it's only for toddlers.

      The coaster ledger

The loop’s rides, ranked — and a plan built around the one money can’t skip.

Islands has the property’s two hardest-to-ride headliners, and one of them — Hagrid’s — takes no Express and runs only an intermittent single-rider line. That single fact drives the whole plan below.

The ledger · ranked and planned

The big rides, ranked — and the one money can’t skip

Quality scored on its own axis from the wait, because here they collide: the two best rides also post the two longest lines. Sort the ledger, then answer the two questions.

      When you arrive
      Your line game
      Sort by

The scores are one editor’s, with quality judged apart from the length of the line. As of July 2026 Hagrid’s takes no Express; its single-rider line runs only intermittently. The Jurassic Park River Adventure is closed for a long 2026 refurbishment. Verify live waits in the Universal Orlando app.

      The blunt fact

Whatever the sort, Hagrid’s decides your day — the highest-rated ride, the longest line, and the only headliner you cannot buy or single-rider your way onto. Rope-drop it or ride it at early admission, and the rest of the loop is easy.

      Fuel for the loop

The best-themed quick-service on the property, and a grotto restaurant to book now, while it still can be.

Islands’ food is led by Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade — a must-do for the room as much as the pie — while the island’s next flagship takes shape on the old Thunder Falls Terrace site. Filter the board to the meal you want; the ratings weigh quality against price and theming.

      Three Broomsticks
Hogsmeade · British pub, quick · $$ · Do not miss. The best-themed quick-service in the park — shepherd’s pie, fish & chips, roast chicken, and Butterbeer at the Hog’s Head next door.

Who the loop is really for

It’s the coaster park and, to many, the prettiest. That doesn’t make it the gentle option.

      Build the day here

Coaster and thrill fans. VelociCoaster, Hulk and Hagrid’s are the biggest, best rides at the resort’s two original parks — this is their gate.

Design-minded visitors. The landscaping and rockwork are the best on the property; this park rewards a slow lap as much as a fast one.

Harry Potter fans. The original Hogsmeade, Hagrid’s and Forbidden Journey live here, with the train to Diagon Alley.

Express-hotel guests. Your free Express does real work on the big coasters here (Hagrid’s aside).

      Weigh it carefully

Families with only toddlers. There’s Seuss Landing and Camp Jurassic, but the headliners carry 48″–54″ minimums — check heights before you promise them.

The line-averse on peak days. Hagrid’s and VelociCoaster post the longest waits on the property; without a rope-drop plan they can eat a day.

Anyone who hates getting wet. Toon Lagoon’s two rides genuinely soak you — fun in July, less so in January.

      The one-line verdict

The best coasters and the best theming on the property — rope-drop Hagrid’s, lap the lagoon slowly, and save the soakers for the afternoon heat.

      Straight answers

What travellers actually ask about Islands of Adventure, answered plainly.

How does Early Park Admission work at Islands of Adventure?

Universal hotel guests — and some ticket packages — enter ahead of the general public, and the early door at this park is typically centred on the Wizarding World, which is precisely where Hagrid's lives; check the day's calendar for the confirmed land. With Hagrid's off Express, that head start is the single most valuable perk a hotel can hand you at this gate. Without it, be at the turnstiles well before the posted opening and walk straight there.

      Does Hagrid's take Express Pass?

No — not anymore. Universal added Hagrid's to Express in May 2025, then removed it again effective 1 July 2026, so as of mid-2026 it is effectively standby-only — a single-rider line exists but opens and closes with capacity, so never build a plan on it. The only reliable ways to ride it short are to rope-drop it at opening or to catch it during Early Park Admission. Plan your day around it, not through it.

Is VelociCoaster too intense for me?

It's an intense ride — two launches to 70 mph, a 155-foot top hat, four inversions and a lap bar only — but it's exceptionally smooth, so the intensity comes from speed and airtime rather than roughness. If you're comfortable with big modern coasters you'll love it; if launches and inversions aren't for you, sit this one out and enjoy the rest of the island.

Is the Jurassic Park River Adventure open?

No — it closed in early 2026 for a lengthy refurbishment and is expected back around late 2026. Its reopening date is a target and could move, so don't build a day around it. VelociCoaster and the rest of the island are unaffected.

How does the Hogwarts Express work?

It's a real ride that carries you between the two Wizarding Worlds — Hogsmeade here at Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida — with different scenes each direction. You need a Park-to-Park ticket to ride it — and unlike Hagrid's, it does take Express. Riding it both ways is worth doing.

Is Islands of Adventure better than Universal Studios Florida?

For coaster-and-thrill fans, yes — Islands has the biggest rides and the most beautiful theming on the property. Universal Studios Florida edges it for screen-based rides, shows and younger children, and holds Diagon Alley. Most trips do both; a Park-to-Park ticket and the Hogwarts Express tie them together.

Where should I eat at Islands of Adventure?

Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade is the must-do quick-service for its theming and above-average pub food. For a sit-down meal, Mythos is the marquee booking — now officially in its final stretch, with the Lost Continent's retirement announced and a new signature restaurant rising on the old Thunder Falls Terrace site for 2027 — and Confisco Grille near the gate is the underrated fallback. The loaded tots at Green Eggs and Ham Cafe are the sleeper snack, when its seasonal window is open.
