Destination Port Guide · Visby, Gotland

Visby

Visby puts most ships on a cruise quay built in 2018, about 1.2 km from the old town. That’s roughly three-quarters of a mile, an easy walk, and shuttle buses run too. Inside the 13th-century wall you’ll find the cathedral, the church ruins, the Botanical Garden and the Gotland Museum, all close together on cobblestones. This is a walking port — a coach earns its keep mostly out on the island.

Visby in brief

Visby is the main town on Gotland, Sweden’s big island out in the middle of the Baltic — and it’s small enough to cross on foot in an afternoon.

UNESCO lists it as the Hanseatic Town of Visby. Its wall runs about 3.4 km with towers and gates, built in the 13th century, and the town was the main Hanseatic center in the Baltic from the 12th to the 14th century.

You’ll most likely dock at the cruise quay that opened in 2018.

Region Gotland built it and Copenhagen Malmö Port runs it. It reaches about 600 meters out into the sea and was built to take two ships of about 340 meters at the same time.

Gotland.com calls it cruise quay 14/15. Quay 4, in the older inner harbor, sits right next to the old town — CruiseMapper lists it for ships up to about 200 meters, so it’s a small-ship berth, not the default.

Next to the big quay is a terminal of about 300 square meters with tourist information, toilets and space for the border authorities and crew — a place to get your bearings, not a shopping hall.

From there, the old town is about 1.2 km away.

Gotland.com gives that distance and publishes recommended walking routes. Shuttle buses also run from the dock, though the visitor site doesn’t say what they cost or where they stop — ask at the terminal desk, not the driver, before you queue.

Inside the wall, the streets are mostly cobblestone, with slopes and changes in level that Gotland.com flags for anyone using a wheelchair or walking with difficulty. Pack shoes with grip, not sandals.

Which tours earn their fare and which you can skip is the job of our Visby shore excursion guide. Read it before you buy a coach seat for a town you can walk.

What's nearby, broadly

Almedalen Kruttornet (Powder Tower) Botanical Garden St Mary’s Cathedral St Karin ruin St Nicolai ruin Stora Torget Gotland Museum (Fornsalen) Kapitelhusgården Jungfrutornet Galgberget Högklint cliffs

The town is the cluster. Almedalen, the park where Visby’s first harbor was, sits by the Powder Tower, which Wikipedia dates to 1160–61 and calls the wall’s oldest tower.

From there it’s a short climb, uphill rather than far, to the Botanical Garden, about 2.5 hectares, founded in 1855 and free, per Visit Sweden. St Mary’s Cathedral, from the late 12th century, is the one medieval church still in use — UNESCO counts 15 inside the wall in the Middle Ages.

Further out, Högklint’s sea cliffs and the Gnisvärd fishing village are where the ship tours go. You’d want wheels for those, not feet.

04

Commonly reached from

Visby sits on the west coast of Gotland, about three hours by ferry from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn on the Swedish mainland, per Visit Sweden. It’s a Baltic stop in the same waters as Stockholm, Tallinn and Riga. CruiseMapper shows AIDA, nicko and MS Hamburg among its October 2026 callers. Practical notes

Current as of October 28, 2026 Review periodically

Swedish kronor, and pay by card.

The currency is the Swedish krona (SEK). Gotland.com says most Swedes pay by card even for small amounts, and that plenty of places don’t take cash at all.

Some spots take euros or US dollars, but most don’t, and your change comes back in kronor — so a card that works abroad is the whole money plan, not a backup.

If you want cash anyway, the visitor site points to an ATM at Visby Galleria in Östercentrum and a small exchange kiosk at Österport.

Taxis often wait at the dock.

Gotland.com says taxis are often waiting at the cruise quay, and if none are, you can call +46 498 200 200. No fare is published.

Taxi Gotland also sells guided tours by the hour — if it has cars and drivers free that day.

Bikes, sometimes right at the pier.

Rental is set up at the cruise pier for certain arrivals only — otherwise there’s a shop in Visby harbor, about 1 km away, per the visitor site.

The tourist office is in town.

It’s in Donnerska huset at Donners plats 1, open Monday to Friday 9:00–17:00 and Saturday 9:00–14:00, per Gotland.com — Sunday hours aren’t listed. Check before you lean on it.

Paperwork: Schengen, with EES at the border.

Sweden is in the Schengen Area, and our map card notes US citizens need no visa for stays under 90 days, with a passport valid at least three months beyond the stay.

The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully running since April 10, 2026. ETIAS isn’t in operation and has no announced start date. Check travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly, and ignore any site asking you to pay for it.

The US Embassy in Stockholm shows Sweden at Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution,” due to terrorism, as of October 28, 2026. Reread travel.state.gov before you sail, not just once at booking.
