Bilbao excursions, from a €12 museum ticket to a day in San Sebastián
Sorted by one test: what does the tour give you that a taxi and your own feet don’t?
For the Guggenheim, mainly the ride. For the coast and San Sebastián, a lot more — those days are hard to build alone.
Berths, metro distances and taxi estimates are on our Bilbao cruise port guide. Calling in Galicia too? Our A Coruña shore excursion guide covers the Santiago question.
For most people, this is the Bilbao day — and it’s the easiest one to do without a tour.
The museum charges €12 for adults, €6 for students aged 18 to 26 and for over-65s, and nothing for anyone under 18. A combined ticket with the Fine Arts Museum is €16.
Getting there is the real cost. A taxi from the Getxo rank takes about 20 to 30 minutes, by CruiseMapper’s estimate, and Turismo Vasco suggests about €25 to €35 each way to central Bilbao.
The metro is the other route, but you’ll walk about 1 to 1.5 km to reach it first. Allow 45 to 60 minutes each way on that route.
Ticket desks close 30 minutes before the museum does, so work backward from all-aboard, not from closing time.
- Time commitment
- Half a day for the museum plus the ride, by our estimate.
- Getting there
- Taxi from the terminal rank, or a walk to Gobela or Neguri and Metro Line 1.
- Suits
- First-timers, families with teens, couples.
- Ship or independent
- Independent — a €12 ticket and a taxi do the job.
Why it's worth considering
The museum is free for under-18s, so a family pays adult tickets only.
You set the pace in the galleries, not a guide with a coach to catch.
The catch
Mondays. Outside the summer run of June 15 to September 7 and a few listed dates, the museum is closed.
Taxi fares are estimates from a regional guide, not a published tariff. Ask before you get in.
Verify before you book
- That the museum opens on your call day, on its own calendar
- Your taxi’s price to the museum, at the rank
- The return time that leaves an hour before all-aboard
If you’d rather not price taxis on the pier, this is the cleanest way to the museum.
Princess lists Bilbao Highlights & the Guggenheim Museum at 5 hours from $104.95, rated moderate, with 4.0 from 32 reviews — a solid sample, not a handful.
Disney sells Bilbao Panoramic & Guggenheim Museum at $154 for guests 10 and up, and a lighter Guggenheim On Your Own with Panoramic Bilbao at $129. It doesn’t print a duration for either.
- Time commitment
- About 5 hours on the Princess version.
- Getting there
- Coach from the pier in Getxo.
- Suits
- First-timers, minimal-stress days, short calls.
- Ship or independent
- Ship — you’re paying for the ride and the guarantee, not the ticket.
Why it's worth considering
The 12-to-15 km ride is handled both ways, and the line has your return timing in hand.
You get the city from the coach as well as the museum, in one block of time.
The catch
Set the $104.95 fare against a €12 ticket plus your share of a €25 to €35 taxi ride, converted at your own rate.
Guided time and free time inside the museum aren’t spelled out in the listing we read.
Verify before you book
- How long you get inside the Guggenheim
- Whether entry is included or extra
- How much walking the moderate rating means
The museum is half of Bilbao. The other half is the old town and its bar counters.
Princess’s Bilbao Old Quarter Walk runs 4.5 hours from $104.95, rated strenuous, with 3.9 from 15 reviews. From Market to Plate runs 5.5 hours from $219.95 — but it scores 2.5 from only 4 reviews.
Disney’s Scenic Highlights of Bilbao and Pintxos is $119, with a $99 child price.
Shore Excursions Group lists one Bilbao tour: a 3-hour culinary history walk with pintxos tastings, $152.99, on sale at $131.99 when we checked. It had a single review.
- Time commitment
- About 3 to 5.5 hours, depending on the tour.
- Getting there
- Coach for the ship tours; for the third-party tour, your own way to the meeting point.
- Suits
- Couples, food-focused travelers, repeat visitors.
- Ship or independent
- Either — the walk itself is easy to do alone if you don’t want a guide.
Why it's worth considering
You eat the city, not just look at it.
Pintxos are the sort of thing a guide makes easier — which counter, what to order, how to pay.
The catch
The ship’s old-town walk is graded strenuous. Expect a lot of walking.
A third-party tour means getting yourself into Bilbao and back to Getxo on time.
Verify before you book
- How many tastings are included, and any drinks
- Dietary options, before you pay
- For the third-party tour, the meeting point and finish time
San Sebastián is the big outing from Bilbao, and it takes most of the call.
Princess sells Best of San Sebastián & Hondarribia at 8.5 hours from $154.95, rated strenuous, with 4.0 from 10 reviews. San Sebastián & Time on your own runs 6.5 hours from $159.95 and had no reviews yet.
Disney sells three versions: Discover the Best of San Sebastián at $154, an adults-only day at $259 and an Ultimate San Sebastián for Families at $229, or $199 for children.
- Time commitment
- About 6.5 to 8.5 hours.
- Getting there
- Coach from the pier.
- Suits
- Repeat visitors who’ve seen the Guggenheim, long calls.
- Ship or independent
- Ship — on a day this long, the ship-run return carries weight.
Why it's worth considering
A second Basque city in one call, with the road handled.
If traffic backs up on the way home, the line manages the timing — ask what its policy is.
The catch
8.5 hours is close to a whole port day. On a short call, it won’t fit.
The longer Princess version is graded strenuous — it’s a walking day.
Verify before you book
- Your ship’s time in port against the tour length
- How much of the day is free time in San Sebastián
- Whether lunch is included
This is the coast day, and it’s the cheapest of the long tours Princess lists here.
Bermeo, Guernica & the Cantabrian Coast runs 5.5 hours from $79.95, rated strenuous, with 4.3 from 16 reviews. Bermeo, Bizcaia Coast & City Drive stretches to 8 hours from $124.95, with 4.4 from 5.
Disney goes for San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: a hike at $109 for adults, or Gaztelugatxe From the Sea at $199.
- Time commitment
- About 5.5 to 8 hours.
- Getting there
- Coach from the pier.
- Suits
- Repeat visitors, active travelers, anyone who’s done the museum.
- Ship or independent
- Ship — we expect the coast towns to be hard to string together on public transport in a port day.
Why it's worth considering
The lowest starting price of any long tour on the Princess Bilbao list.
Gernika carries real history, and the fishing towns are a different Basque Country from the city.
The catch
Both Princess versions are graded strenuous.
We couldn’t confirm current access rules for Gaztelugatxe from an official source — ask the line what the tour includes.
Verify before you book
- How many steps and how much hill walking is involved
- Whether Gaztelugatxe is a viewpoint or a climb
- Lunch and free time in Bermeo
Skip the city altogether and Getxo still fills a day.
Ereaga Beach and the marina sit beside the pier. Turismo Vasco lists the Old Port of Algorta, the promenade of the great villas, Punta Begoña Galleries and La Galea Fort nearby.
The Bizkaia Bridge, a transporter bridge Turismo Vasco describes as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, links Getxo and Portugalete. Its site lists hours of 10:00 to 20:00 from Holy Week to October, and to 19:00 the rest of the year.
A lift climbs to a walkway 45 m up. An undated notice on its site says the lift runs 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 20:00 at half capacity while a technical issue is fixed — check before you go.
- Time commitment
- Two to four hours, by our estimate.
- Getting there
- On foot along the waterfront for the beach; for the bridge, a short taxi (Turismo Vasco puts the Areeta area about €10 by taxi) or the metro.
- Suits
- Short calls, budget days, families, anyone who’s seen the Guggenheim.
- Ship or independent
- Independent. Disney sells a Getxo bike ride at $169 for ages 15 and up if you want a guide.
Why it's worth considering
No run into the city, so less to time on the way back.
A beach, a transporter bridge and a waterfront of grand villas, with the ship in sight.
The catch
We couldn’t read the bridge’s public ticket prices on its site.
You’re near Bilbao but not in it — first-timers may regret skipping the museum.
Verify before you book
- Bridge lift hours and price on its own site
- The walking distance from your berth to the bridge
- Beach conditions and the weather
For anyone who can’t handle the walking, this is the tour built for it.
Princess lists Easy Bilbao at 2.75 hours from $69.95, rated easy, with 3.9 from 36 reviews. A wheelchair-accessible version runs the same length at the same price; it had no reviews when we checked.
- Time commitment
- About 2.75 hours.
- Getting there
- Coach from the pier.
- Suits
- Limited mobility, short calls.
- Ship or independent
- Ship — an accessible vehicle from the pier is hard to arrange yourself.
Why it's worth considering
The lowest starting price on the Princess Bilbao list, and graded easy.
An accessible version is listed, not just promised on request.
The catch
The listing we read doesn’t say whether the Guggenheim is a visit or a drive-by.
A 3.9 from 36 reviews is decent, not glowing.
Verify before you book
- Whether the museum is entered or seen from outside
- Lift and ramp access at each stop
- Seating on the vehicle for the accessible version
These are the repeat visitor’s options — newer tours with no reviews to lean on yet.
Princess sells Panoramic Bilbao and Gorka Izagirre Winery at 3.15 hours from $139.95, Rolls Royce Adventure & Guggenheim Museum at 5 hours from $159.95, and Coast to Coast: Castro Urdiales & Bilbao at 5 hours from $144.95. All three are rated moderate.
Disney’s comparable options are Torre Loizaga & Pozalagua Caves at $189 and Gernika with Berroja Winery at $174, adults only.
- Time commitment
- About 3 to 5 hours.
- Getting there
- Coach or car from the pier.
- Suits
- Couples, repeat visitors.
- Ship or independent
- Ship — these are packaged experiences, not things to rebuild alone.
Why it's worth considering
A different angle on the area, with the winery tour short enough for a tight call.
The car tour pairs the novelty with the museum, so you don’t give up the Guggenheim.
The catch
Not one of the three Princess versions had a review when we checked.
You’re paying a premium over the 5-hour Highlights tour for the novelty.
Verify before you book
- How many wines are poured, and the minimum age
- Time inside the museum on the car tour
- What you see in Castro Urdiales, on foot or from the coach

Bilbao with the ship or on your own
The museum: do it yourself
A taxi rank operates at the terminal while ships are in port, and the Guggenheim sells its own tickets online.
The ship’s 5-hour tour mostly buys you the transfer — worth it if you’d rather not sort out a taxi yourself.
The coast and San Sebastián: take the ship
These are long days with several stops, and the drive home is the risky part.
On a ship tour the line manages the timing of a traffic jam. On your own, it’s yours.
Third-party options
Shore Excursions Group listed a single Bilbao tour when we checked: a 3-hour pintxos and food-history walk, with one review.
For a third-party tour, you’ll still need your own way between Getxo and the meeting point. Price that taxi in before you compare.
How each option compares in Bilbao
| Excursion | Lean ship excursion when… | Independent works when… |
| The Guggenheim | If you won’t take a taxi | Usually — €12 and a taxi |
| Old town and pintxos | If you want it bundled with transport | With a firm plan for the ride back |
| San Sebastián | Yes — long day, ship-run return | Not on a port day, in our judgment |
| Gernika and the coast | Yes — the stops are spread out | Hard to link on public transport |
| Getxo and the bridge | Only if you want a guide or the bike ride | Yes — Getxo starts at the pier |
| Easy Bilbao | Yes — accessible vehicle from the pier | Hard to arrange accessible transport alone |
Short answer
On a first call, take a taxi to the Guggenheim, spend the late morning there, walk to the old town for pintxos, and be back in a taxi with an hour to spare. On a repeat visit, book the 5.5-hour coast tour. On a short call, or a Monday out of summer, stay in Getxo and ride the Bizkaia Bridge.

Bilbao port logistics: Getxo, taxis and the metro
From the ship into town
Ships berth at Getxo, at three piers beside Ereaga Beach, per the port’s catalogue. Full berth detail is on our Bilbao cruise port guide.
- Alongside berths; no tender listed
- Tourist office and restrooms in the terminal
- Metro Line 1 at Gobela, about 1 km away, or Neguri, about 1.5 km
Taxis
A cab stand operates while ships are in port. Turismo Vasco’s estimates run about €25 to €35 to central Bilbao and about €10 to the Areeta area.
No official tariff was published that we could find. Agree a rough price before you set off.
The metro
Line 1 runs from Getxo into central Bilbao. We couldn’t read a current Metro Bilbao fare table, so check the price at the machine.
Allow 45 to 60 minutes each way with the walk.
Safety and paperwork
The State Department rates Spain Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution — a national advisory, not a Bilbao rating (issued August 1, 2026; checked October 29, 2026).
The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026. ETIAS isn’t live and has no announced start date — check travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly.
