Bilbao

Your ticket says Bilbao, but the ship docks in Getxo. The cruise terminal sits beside Ereaga Beach and the marina, and the port puts the city about 12 to 15 km away — roughly 7.5 to 9 miles. A taxi takes about 20 to 30 minutes. The metro takes longer, because the stations Turismo Vasco suggests are a walk from the pier. Plan the ride first; the Guggenheim comes second.

Bilbao in brief

Bilbao is a city call where the city isn’t at the gangway — and that one fact shapes the whole day.

You dock in Getxo.

The port’s cruise catalogue puts the terminal next to Ereaga Beach, with the town marina on the other side. Piers 1 and 2 add up to about 684 m of quay, and Pier 3 adds about 355 m.

CruiseMapper says Pier 3 is served by the newer Olatua terminal, opened in March 2022, while the first two use the older maritime station. Either way you walk out into a seaside suburb, not a downtown.

The city is a ride away.

The port gives the distance to Bilbao as both 12 and 15 km in the same document. CruiseMapper calls it about 20 minutes by road and suggests 45 to 60 minutes each way if you go by shuttle and metro.

That gap is the decision. By those figures, a taxi saves you roughly 25 to 30 minutes each way.

The Guggenheim is the reason most people come.

The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 and charges €12 for adults, with under-18s free. Mondays are the trap — its site shows it shut on most of them outside high summer.

Our Bilbao shore excursion guide weighs the museum, the old town and San Sebastián against each other. Check your call day against the museum calendar before you book anything.

From the gangway in Getxo

Docked
Getxo piers 1 and 2

About 366 m and 318 m of quay, with the older maritime station. The port’s older catalogue gives a depth of about 11 m alongside, and CruiseMapper lists a 12 m maximum draft.

Docked
Getxo pier 3

About 355 m, the newest berth, with its own terminal building. Turismo Vasco describes a two-floor glazed hall and a gangway of about 169 m.

∼0.6 mi
Terminal to Gobela metro

Turismo Vasco puts Gobela, on Metro Line 1, about 1 km from the terminal. It’s the nearer of the two stations it suggests.

∼1 mi
Terminal to Neguri metro

About 1.5 km, by the same guide. The port’s older catalogue calls the metro “about a 20-minute walk”.

At the pier
Taxis and the tourist desk

A cab stand runs while ships are in port, and the terminal has a tourist office and restrooms, says Turismo Vasco.

∼20–30 min
Taxi into Bilbao

CruiseMapper’s estimate in normal traffic. Turismo Vasco suggests about €25 to €35 between the terminal and Abando station.

The first five are on the Getxo waterfront, near the ship. The Bizkaia Bridge links Getxo and Portugalete. The Guggenheim, the Fine Arts Museum and the old town are in Bilbao proper, a taxi or metro ride away.

Gernika, Bermeo and the Cantabrian coast appear on Princess’s 5.5-to-8-hour coast tours. San Sebastián is the long day — Princess sells it at 6.5 and 8.5 hours.

Bilbao sits on the Bay of Biscay, on Atlantic coast itineraries between England, France and northwest Spain. In October 2026, CruiseMapper listed calls by P&O Cruises, MSC, Viking, Oceania, Silversea, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Cunard, TUI, Hapag-Lloyd and Phoenix Reisen. The 2025 season brought 95 calls and about 181,000 passengers, by Container News’ count. Nearby ports on our site include A Coruña, Vigo and Bordeaux, and many sailings start at Southampton. Practical notes

Current as of October 28, 2026 Review periodically

Euros, and taxi estimates rather than a flat fare.

Prices in Bilbao are in euros. We found no official taxi tariff or flat cruise fare from Getxo — Turismo Vasco’s estimates are about €25 to €35 to Abando station and about €10 to the Areeta metro area.

Treat those as a guide, not a quote. Ask for an estimate at the rank before you get in.

The shuttle question.

CruiseMapper says a port shuttle links the terminals with public transport in Getxo, and the port’s catalogue says shuttle buses are arranged through the ship. We couldn’t find a public timetable for either.

Check your ship’s daily program the night before. If there’s no shuttle, the metro is a walk of about 1 to 1.5 km.

Metro Line 1 runs into the city.

Gobela and Neguri are the stations Turismo Vasco suggests. We couldn’t read a Metro Bilbao fare table — check the price at the station.

The Guggenheim keeps a Monday rule.

It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 19:00, and stays open to 20:00 from June 15 to September 13. Its 2026 calendar opens Mondays from June 15 to September 7, plus a handful of dates such as December 7 and 28. Later years may differ, so check its calendar for your date.

Tickets are €12 for adults, €6 for students and over-65s, and free under 18. Buy on the museum’s own site — it warns about fraudulent resellers.

Safety and entry.

The State Department rates Spain Level 2, exercise increased caution. That is a national advisory, not a Bilbao rating. Confirmed on the advisory index October 29, 2026; recheck if you’re reading this later.

The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026 — ask your line how it works for your ship. ETIAS isn’t running, and the EU hasn’t named a start date; it says it will announce one several months ahead. Check travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly.

Where do cruise ships dock for Bilbao?

At the Getxo cruise terminal, beside Ereaga Beach. The port lists three berths there, with about 1,039 m of quay in all.

Can I walk from the cruise ship into Bilbao?

No — not realistically. The city is about 12 to 15 km away. You can walk to the Getxo waterfront, and to a metro station about 1 to 1.5 km off.

Does Bilbao tender?

Not as far as we found. The port lists three alongside berths at Getxo, and no tender anchorage turned up in our sources.

How long does it take to get to the Guggenheim?

About 20 to 30 minutes by taxi in normal traffic. By shuttle and metro, CruiseMapper suggests allowing 45 to 60 minutes each way.

How much is a taxi from the cruise terminal?

We found no official tariff. Turismo Vasco estimates about €25 to €35 between the terminal and Abando station, in central Bilbao.

Is there a shuttle from the port?

Sometimes. CruiseMapper mentions a shuttle to public transport in Getxo, and the port says shuttle buses are arranged through the ship.

We found no public timetable, so check your ship’s daily program.

Is the Guggenheim open on Mondays?

Mostly not. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, plus Mondays from June 15 to September 7 and a few listed dates, such as December 7 and 28, on its 2026 calendar.

Is Bilbao safe for cruise passengers?

The State Department rates Spain Level 2, exercise increased caution. That is a national advisory, not a Bilbao rating; recheck it before you fly.

Ordinary city sense covers most of it: keep your phone zipped away on the metro and in the old town, not just at the museum.
