Chania Shore Excursions: A Bus-Fare Old Town, an Overlooked Ruin, and the Days Worth Paying For

A simple plan works here. The ship berths at Souda, roughly 4 miles out, and line 13 runs you to the market for a couple of euros. The harbor, the mosque and the fortress are free from there. Pay for distance — a beach, a winery, Rethymno — and keep the old town for yourself.

Chania in 30 seconds: bus in, walk the harbor, pay only for distance

Known for
A Venetian harbor and lighthouse, the Küçük Hasan Mosque and Firka fortress, ancient Aptera above Souda Bay, and western Crete’s beaches and wineries.
Strongest excursion styles
Independent for the old town, Aptera and water sports. A coach for beach breaks and Rethymno.
Booking on your own
Easy. A city bus covers the gap to town, and SEG lists plenty of half-days.
The one thing to know
Souda isn’t Chania. Count the bus or taxi each way before you plan anything.
02

Quick picks for a Chania port day

Two of these cost a few euros. Put your money into getting somewhere, not into walking streets you could do alone.

03

Chania excursions, from a bus-fare harbor walk to a day across the island

Eight options, from a bus-fare walk to a full day inland. Prices are the listings’ own, in the currency they print, and they change.

For the berth, the bus and the taxis, see our Chania cruise port guide first.

Chania’s old town and Venetian harbor, by city bus

  • Line 13 from Souda
  • Venetian harbor and lighthouse
  • Firka fortress and the mosque
  • Museum in Halepa

Begin with the cheap option, because much of Chania is streets and a waterfront — you pay for the bus, not for entry.

Line 13 leaves Souda Port about every 30 minutes on the operator’s timetable and finishes at the Agora (market) stop. From there, head for the harbor.

Royal Caribbean describes boats beneath a 16th-century lighthouse, and lists the Küçük Hasan Mosque and the Firka fortress on its old-town walk.

Want one indoor stop? The Archaeological Museum of Chania holds over 4,000 objects in a building opened in 2022.

It sits in Halepa, though, about 30 minutes’ walk from the center. Full entry is €15, and it’s shut on Tuesdays.

Time commitment
Three to five hours is our estimate, plus the bus each way.
Getting there
Bus 13 or a taxi from Souda, then on foot.
Suits
First-timers, short calls, budget days, anyone who’d rather skip a coach.
Ship or independent
Independent. A guide adds stories, not entry.

Why it's worth considering

It costs a bus ticket each way, a couple of euros at most if you buy ahead.

You set the pace, and you can turn back whenever the clock tells you to.

The catch

The bus timetable we read was last updated in May 2025, and it lists the weekday runs.

On-board tickets are cash only and cost more, a travel guide says.

Ancient Aptera, above Souda Bay

  • Plateau about 200 m up
  • Roman cisterns and theatre
  • Ottoman forts nearby
  • Low entry fee

Most people head for the harbor. Aptera, up the hill, is the one to try on a day with spare hours.

The site sits on a plateau about 200 meters above Souda Bay, per the Region of Crete, roughly 15 km from Chania.

Inside its walls — about 4 km of them — the Region of Crete lists Roman cisterns, a theatre and the monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos. The Ottoman fortresses of Koules and Itzedin stand nearby.

The listed ticket is €4, with €2 reduced.

Time commitment
No tour duration is published; one to two hours on site is our estimate.
Getting there
Taxi from the Souda rank, or a private driver.
Suits
Repeat visitors, history lovers, couples who want quiet.
Ship or independent
Independent — we found no ship listing for Aptera alone.

Why it's worth considering

You get a big ancient site for a few euros, with the bay below you.

It pairs well with a late afternoon in Chania if you hold the taxi or call another.

The catch

The hours we found date from a 2023 listing: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in late October, longer in summer.

There’s no published taxi fare, and getting a cab back from a hilltop site needs a plan made at the rank, not on the hilltop.

A food walk through Chania

  • Listed 3½ to 5 hours
  • Tastings in the old town
  • From about $219

If you’d like the old town explained over plates rather than plaques, a food walk does both.

Shore Excursions Group lists a Flavors of Chania walking tour at 5 hours, on sale at $218.99. Its Taste of Chania runs 3 hours 30 minutes at $234.99, with lunch.

Royal Caribbean sells a Chania Old Town Walk too, rated moderate. Its listing shows no duration or price.

Time commitment
About 3½ to 5 hours, per SEG.
Getting there

Suits
First-timers, couples, anyone who eats their way around a city.
Ship or independent
Either. Compare SEG against the ship’s own price.

Why it's worth considering

Lunch is handled and so is the context, which frees the rest of the day for wandering on your own.

The catch

At over $200 a head, it costs far more than doing the same streets on bus fare.

A beach afternoon at Agia Marina or Falassarna

  • Sunbed and umbrella included
  • Agia Marina about 30 min away
  • Falassarna is a longer day

Two beach offers here come with the sunbed already sorted.

Holland America’s Agia Marina Beach Break runs about 4 hours from $89. The beach is about a 30-minute drive, and you get roughly three hours at a beach club.

Shore Excursions Group’s Falassarna version runs 6 hours at $141.99, with a reserved sunbed, umbrella and snacks, per the listing.

Time commitment
About 4 hours (Holland America) to 6 hours (SEG).
Getting there
Coach from Souda.
Suits
Families, couples, anyone on a repeat visit.
Ship or independent
Ship for the simplest version; SEG for Falassarna.

Why it's worth considering

The ship handles the coach, and the bed’s waiting when you arrive — a booked sunbed, not a scramble for one.

The catch

Holland America’s version isn’t wheelchair accessible, and swimming is at your own risk.

Falassarna takes most of the day for a few hours on the sand — the shorter Agia Marina run looks the better trade on a tight call, our read.

Wine country and the White Mountains by jeep

  • Manousakis Winery
  • Apokoronas villages
  • From about $139

For the hills rather than the coast, the jeep tours head inland from Souda.

Shore Excursions Group lists a Cretan Wines Jeep Safari at 4 hours 30 minutes for $138.99, with a tasting at Manousakis Winery and a snack. A White Mountains version runs 7 hours, on sale at $148.99, with a Greek lunch.

Royal Caribbean sells a Manousakis Winery tour rated mild, and a White Mountains jeep tour rated strenuous, with no duration or price shown.

Time commitment
About 4½ to 7 hours, per SEG.
Getting there
Jeep from Souda.
Suits
Couples, repeat visitors, wine drinkers.
Ship or independent
Either. Compare the ship’s activity rating before you pick.

Why it's worth considering

You see rural Crete in a half-day from a jeep seat, not a rental car’s wheel.

The catch

Rough tracks and a jeep seat don’t suit everyone — Royal Caribbean calls its mountain jeep tour strenuous.

Chania town and the Botanical Park

  • Listed at 5 hours
  • Cooking demo and light lunch
  • Uneven paths

Princess pairs the old town with the Botanical Park of Crete in one 5-hour tour.

The schedule runs about 30 minutes’ drive to Chania, 1 hour 45 minutes there with a guide and free time, then 30 minutes to the park. You spend about 90 minutes at the park, with a cooking demonstration and a light lunch.

Royal Caribbean runs a similar Botanical Park and Chania Town tour, which it rates strenuous.

Time commitment
About 5 hours, per Princess.
Getting there
Motorcoach from the pier.
Suits
First-timers who want the town and a meal handled.
Ship or independent
Ship. The two stops are far apart.

Why it's worth considering

Town, garden and lunch in one booking — the logistics stay with the ship.

The catch

Princess warns of uphill and downhill walking on uneven paths, and doesn’t recommend it with mobility devices.

You get under two hours in Chania itself.

Rethymno, Arkadi Monastery and Lake Kournas

  • A second town
  • Monastery and lake
  • Private from about $237

Rethymno is a town east of Chania, and tours bundle it with Arkadi Monastery and Lake Kournas.

Shore Excursions Group lists a private Rethymno and Arkadi day at 6 hours 30 minutes, from $236.99 a person. Its From North to South tour runs 7 hours at $184.99, with lunch, and lists Lake Kournas among its stops.

Royal Caribbean sells Kournas, Arkadi and Rethymnon as a moderate tour. Its page shows no duration.

Time commitment
About 6½ to 7 hours, per SEG.
Getting there
Coach or private car from Souda.
Suits
Repeat visitors who’ve done Chania.
Ship or independent
Ship on a tight call; private on a long one.

Why it's worth considering

It puts a fresh town and a monastery on a port you already know, which is what a second call is for, not a rerun of the harbor.

The catch

It swaps Chania’s harbor for another town — first-timers should stay in Chania instead.

Paddleboard or snorkel on Souda Bay

  • SUP at Marathi and Loutraki
  • Boat and snorkel trip
  • From about $91

You’re already on Souda Bay, and SEG bills it as the Mediterranean’s largest natural harbor.

Its Stand Up Paddling Adventure runs 2 hours at $90.99, off Marathi and Loutraki, with snorkeling. A boat-and-snorkel trip on the bay runs 3 hours, on sale at $120.99.

Both are short enough to leave the afternoon free for the old town.

Time commitment
About 2 to 3 hours, per SEG.
Getting there
Check the meeting point against Souda.
Suits
Active travelers, families with confident swimmers, couples.
Ship or independent
Independent, through SEG or a local operator.

Why it's worth considering

It’s the shortest paid option in this guide, and it gets you in the water.

The catch

Weather can disrupt water trips, so ask what happens to your money if it does — a refund, not a voucher, is what you want.

Chania with the ship or on your own

In town, the ship sells you a seat

The old town is free once you’re there. A ship’s town tour mainly buys the transfer and a guide.

Bus 13 covers the same road for the price of a kiosk ticket.

For beaches and Rethymno, the ship keeps time

Holland America’s Agia Marina run, about 4 hours from $89, comes with the sunbed included and the coach handled for you.

On a 7-hour Rethymno day, having the ship handle the timing matters more than the price.

Compare before you commit

SEG, the ship and local operators all sell food walks and jeep tours. Check the duration, the pickup point and what’s actually included — three lines that tell you most of what you need.

Short answer

Take bus 13, walk the harbor, and add the museum unless it’s a Tuesday — that’s a strong first Chania day for a few euros. On a repeat call, try Aptera or a winery. Book a beach break through the ship if the kids are along, and save Rethymno for when you’ve seen Chania already.

05

What we’d skip in Chania, and what to check first

Samaria Gorge on a port day

The independent route is a morning bus to Omalos, the hike, a ferry to Chora Sfakion and a bus back, per one travel guide.

That’s a one-way chain with no slack. Leave it for a land stay in Crete.

Balos with no published duration

SEG lists a Balos and Gramvousa catamaran but shows no duration. Going alone means the bus to Kissamos and a boat timed to it.

Unless your line sells it with a return guarantee, choose a nearer beach.

Knossos from Chania

It’s a Minoan site near Heraklion, and Royal Caribbean calls it a bit of a drive from Chania.

If Knossos is the goal, book it from a Heraklion call instead.

Walking from Souda

About 6.5 to 7 km of road to the old town.

Spend the couple of euros on bus 13 and save your legs for the harbor.

Trusting a five-minute bus

CruiseMapper says buses leave every five minutes. The operator’s timetable shows about every 30.

Plan on the half-hour, and read the last departure before you set off.

A private Elafonisi day on a short call

SEG’s private Elafonisi trip runs 8 hours.

With anything less than a full day ashore, pick Agia Marina or Marathi instead.

06

Chania port logistics: Souda, bus 13 and taxis

From the ship into town

Big ships berth at Souda, where MedCruise lists four quays and says there’s no free shuttle.

Line 13 runs to the Agora (market) stop in Chania. Full detail sits on our Chania cruise port guide.

Tickets and taxis

One travel guide prices a kiosk ticket at €1.10 or €1.50 and an on-board one at €2 or €2.50, cash only.

Taxis wait at the port rank. No fare is published — agree it first.

Sight hours

The Archaeological Museum runs 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from April through October and closes Tuesdays. Aptera’s late-October hours were 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a 2023 listing.

Chania shore excursion questions

Do I need a shore excursion in Chania?

Not for the old town. Bus 13 gets you there, and the harbor costs nothing to walk.

A tour helps for beaches, wineries and Rethymno.

How long is the ride from the ship to Chania?

Greeka puts the bus at about 24 minutes and a taxi at about 20. Princess allows 30 minutes by coach.

Is Aptera worth visiting from a cruise?

On a repeat visit, yes. It’s a large ancient site above Souda Bay with a listed €4 ticket.

Can I visit Knossos from Chania?

You can, but it sits near Heraklion, well east of here. A Heraklion call is the easier way in.

Can I do Balos or Elafonisi on a port day?

Elafonisi takes 8 hours on SEG’s private trip. SEG lists a Balos catamaran but no duration, so check before you commit.

Which beach excursion from Souda is shortest?

Holland America’s Agia Marina run is the shortest we found, at about 4 hours from $89.

SEG’s Falassarna day runs 6.

Is the Archaeological Museum of Chania open every day?

No — it closes on Tuesdays. In summer it opens at 8 a.m. and shuts at 8 p.m.; entry is €15 full price.

Can I book Chania tours independently?

Yes. SEG lists about 20 Chania tours, from 2-hour paddles to 8-hour private days.

Check whether pickup is at Souda or in town.
