Chania in brief
Chania sits on Crete’s northwest coast, and its old quarter centers on a Venetian harbor with a 16th-century lighthouse, per Royal Caribbean.
Cruise ships don’t use that harbor, though — the big ones berth a few miles east, at Souda.
The berth: Souda, a working port.
CruiseMapper describes Souda as a naval and ferry port. MedCruise lists four quays, about 1,470 meters in all, able to take ships over 300 meters long.
Souda sees real traffic: the Chania Municipal Port Fund counted 112 cruise calls and about 213,500 passengers at Souda from January through August 2026, per a report in Argophilia.
That same report logs six calls at the old Venetian Port in those months. Check which of the two harbors your ship is using before you plan the walk off.
How far is town?
Sources split on the distance. MedCruise puts Chania’s center about 7 km from the port, and Greeka says about 6.5 km — CruiseMapper’s figure is lower, at about 4 km.
We use the longer pair, since it squares with a bus ride Greeka puts at about 24 minutes — a trip of several miles, not a hop.
The old town is the reason to come.
Royal Caribbean’s port notes point to the Venetian harbor and its lighthouse. Its old-town walk also takes in the Küçük Hasan Mosque and the Firka fortress.
The new Archaeological Museum of Chania is farther out, in the Halepa district. Hellenic Heritage puts it about 30 minutes on foot from the center.
Above Souda Bay, the ruins of ancient Aptera sit on a plateau about 200 meters up — about 15 km from Chania, reached by taxi or tour.
For which tours earn their fare, read our Chania shore excursion guide before you book on board.
From Souda into Chania
Four quays at the head of Souda Bay, per MedCruise. Anchorage exists, but large ships berth alongside here.
About 4 miles by road. That’s a ride, not a walk.
The urban bus timetable shows runs roughly every 30 minutes on weekdays, ending at the Agora (market) stop.
A travel guide quotes €1.10 to €1.50 bought ahead and €2 to €2.50 on board, cash only. Confirm the zone at the kiosk.
Greeka puts the drive at about 20 minutes, for up to four people. No fare is published.
Royal Caribbean puts the harbor, the Küçük Hasan Mosque and the Firka fortress on one old-town walk. Allow time for the bus back.
What's nearby, broadly
The first five sit in or beside the old town. The museum is a longer walk east, in Halepa.
Aptera looks down on Souda Bay, and Shore Excursions Group runs paddleboard trips off Marathi and Loutraki on the same water.
Agia Marina is a beach about 30 minutes from the port by coach, per Holland America. Rethymno is a separate town farther east — a long half-day, not an add-on.
Check Aptera’s hours before you go. The Region of Crete’s listing shows late-October closing at 6 p.m., and it hasn’t been updated since 2023.

Chania sits on Crete’s northwest coast, well west of Heraklion, the island’s other main cruise stop. Greek Isles itineraries often pair it with Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes, and many start or end at Piraeus for Athens. CruiseMapper lists 28 calls for October 2026, from Viking, Celebrity, Holland America and Princess to Cunard, Seabourn, Silversea and Royal Caribbean. Greece uses the euro.
Bus, museum and site prices are all quoted in euros. Greeka lists ATMs at the port, and the bus conductor takes cash only, so carry small notes.
Bus 13 is the cheap way in.
The Chania Urban Bus timetable shows the first run from the market at 6 a.m. and the last at 10:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. From Souda Port, the table runs from 6:40 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Those tables were last updated in May 2025, and the times we read are the Monday-to-Friday ones. Check chaniabus.gr for your day.
Greeka says hourly and CruiseMapper says every five minutes — the operator’s own table, at about 30 minutes, is the one we trust.
Since February 9, 2026, line 13 runs along Souda Avenue and skips Kato Souda, per the operator.
Taxis: agree the fare first.
There’s a taxi rank at the port, and Greeka lists Souda’s radio taxi at +30 28210 89555. We found no published fare to Chania, so ask before you get in.
The US advisory is Level 1.
The State Department lists Greece at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, issued October 23, 2025. It flags pickpocketing at tourist sites and on public transport.
Entry: Schengen rules apply.
US passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days, and the passport must be valid at least three months past your departure, per the State Department.
The EU’s Entry/Exit System has run at Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026. ETIAS isn’t in operation, and no start date has been announced — the EU says it will give several months’ notice. Check travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly.
How either applies on a cruise depends on your itinerary. Read your line’s pre-cruise notes.
Museum days and hours.
The Archaeological Museum of Chania is closed on Tuesdays. From April through October it’s open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and a full ticket is €15.
Check the weekday of your call before you plan around it.

Chania FAQ
Where do cruise ships dock for Chania?
At Souda, a naval and ferry port at the head of Souda Bay. MedCruise lists four quays there, about 1,470 meters long in all.
Six of the 118 calls counted from January through August 2026 used the old Venetian Port instead, so check your line’s port notes.
Can I walk from the cruise port into Chania?
Not sensibly. The old town is about 6.5 to 7 km (around 4 miles) away by road.
Take bus 13 or a taxi, then walk once you’re there.
Does Chania tender?
Big ships berth at Souda rather than tender. MedCruise does list anchorage and allows tenders, so a small ship could anchor.
How do I take the bus from Souda to Chania?
Line 13 runs between Souda Port and the market stop in Chania, about every 30 minutes on the operator’s timetable.
Buy a ticket at a kiosk if you can. On board it costs more and it’s cash only, per a travel guide.
How much is a taxi from Souda to Chania?
No fare is published. Greeka puts the ride at about 20 minutes, so settle the price at the Souda rank, not halfway into town.
Is there a free shuttle from the port?
MedCruise’s page, dated 2018, says there isn’t a free one. Some lines sell their own transfer, so ask on board what yours charges — that’s the line’s price, not the port’s.
What is there to see near the port itself?
Ancient Aptera, on a plateau about 200 meters above Souda Bay, and Marathi, a spot on Souda Bay where Shore Excursions Group runs paddleboard trips.
Aptera’s listed ticket is €4. You’ll need a taxi or a tour to reach it.
Is Chania safe for cruise passengers?
Greece sits at State Department Level 1, the lowest of four, in an advisory issued October 23, 2025.
Watch your bag on buses and in the busy harbor lanes — pickpocketing is the main risk it names.
