Durban excursions, from the beachfront out to the game reserves
Ordered from closest to farthest, since in Durban the drive sets the shape of the day — the sights come second.
The beach end is yours to run. Past it, book a guide or a transfer rather than hailing a ride.
Terminal, taxi, money and entry detail is on our Durban cruise port guide.
The easiest Durban day is the one closest to the ship — a gate ticket and a short ride, not a coach booking.
uShaka Marine World combines SeaWorld, an aquarium park, with Wet ’n Wild, a water park. Prices reported from September 1, 2026 put one attraction at R267 for an adult and R216 for a child or senior, with both parks for R399 and R324.
The southern beachfront runs past the same end of town, so walk the promenade for free — and swim only between the flags.
It’s close, but get the terminal staff’s word on the route before walking. A short taxi is the low-effort answer, and it settles the question before you start.
- Time commitment
- A few hours for one park; most of a day if you add the water park.
- Getting there
- Near the terminal. Ask staff about pedestrian access, or take a short taxi.
- Suits
- Families, short calls, a rainy-day fallback for the aquarium side.
- Ship or independent
- Independent. Buy at the park, and keep the beach to lifeguarded stretches.
Why it's worth considering
It’s the least travel for the most to do, and it’s an easy sell to children.
The aquarium half works when the weather turns, which the beach doesn’t.
The catch
Food, drinks and parking cost extra on top of the gate price.
Opening hours weren’t confirmed from uShaka’s own page — check them for your date, not the day you happen to read this.
Verify before you book
- uShaka’s current rates and opening hours on its own site
- The pedestrian route terminal staff recommend
- Lifeguard hours on the beach you pick
Downtown is near, but this is the city most visitors are told to see by car — a half-day loop with a guide handles that for you.
Cullinan Guided Journeys runs a private small-group city tour of 3 hours 30 minutes from the port, listed from about $86. It takes in the Golden Mile, the historic center, the Botanic Gardens, Victoria Street Market and a photo stop at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Morning departures leave between 08:30 and 09:00 and return around 12:00 to 12:30, and the afternoon run goes 13:00 to 16:30.
MSC’s own Durban Sightseeing Drive covers similar ground by coach — the Vasco da Gama Clock, City Hall, a Currie Road viewpoint and free time at the market — but it doesn’t publish a price or a length.
- Time commitment
- About 3½ hours on the private version.
- Getting there
- The private guide meets you at the port. Ship tours leave from the terminal.
- Suits
- First-timers, short calls, anyone who’d rather not deal with taxis.
- Ship or independent
- Either. The private tour publishes a price; the ship’s coach brings the back-to-ship guarantee.
Why it's worth considering
It packs the city’s main stops into a morning and leaves the afternoon for uShaka or the beach.
A local guide gives the market and the old center context you won’t get from a car window.
The catch
The private listing says all sales are final — no refund if your ship’s schedule moves.
Bunny chow is an optional stop — paid on top, not part of the fare.
Verify before you book
- Disembarkation time against the 08:00 meeting
- Group size and whether others join
- The refund terms, since this listing offers no refunds
This is the half-day that gets you out of the city and into the hills west of Durban — green ridges and a game drive, not more traffic lights.
MSC sells a half-day Valley of 1,000 Hills and PheZulu Park tour: a coach into the valley, then the park’s safari drive, Zulu history and a dance show.
PheZulu sits at Botha’s Hill. Its dance shows run at 10:00, 11:30, 14:00 and 15:30, while open game drives head out through the day from 09:00, weather permitting, looking for giraffe, zebra and kudu.
The park also has a reptile section with crocodiles and snakes.
- Time commitment
- A half-day on MSC’s listing.
- Getting there
- Coach from the ship, or a booked driver. Visit Durban puts the valley about 30 minutes from the center.
- Suits
- First-timers with a half-day, families, travelers who want a first look at the bush.
- Ship or independent
- Either. MSC’s version handles the road; on your own, game-drive tickets are sold at the park’s office.
Why it's worth considering
Hills, a short game drive and a cultural show fit into one morning, with the coach doing the navigating.
It’s a softer start than a full reserve, and it’s back in time for the afternoon.
The catch
The animals on PheZulu’s list are plains game such as giraffe and zebra — a taste of the bush, not a full safari.
Published prices for the drive and the show differ between listings, so check the park’s own rates.
Verify before you book
- Which show and drive times your tour hits
- Whether park entry is in the tour price
- The return time, with the city traffic in mind
If you want the city loop and the hills on one call, this joins them.
Cullinan Guided Journeys lists a 7-hour-30-minute private small-group tour that does the Golden Mile, the old center, the Botanic Gardens and Victoria Street Market, then drives to the Valley of 1000 Hills and PheZulu.
The listing wants you off the ship by 08:00 for an 08:30 start, and says your ship shouldn’t leave before 18:00. Headline prices start from about $175 for the day.
Read that last condition twice — it’s the whole test of whether this tour fits your call.
- Time commitment
- About 7½ hours.
- Getting there
- Transfers to and from the cruise terminal are included.
- Suits
- Couples or small family groups on a long call.
- Ship or independent
- Independent, and on a full-day call. Lunch, drinks and tips are extra.
Why it's worth considering
Two kinds of Durban in a single booking, with one guide all day rather than two hand-offs.
A group of two to six is far smaller than a full coach.
The catch
All sales are final on this listing, so a changed port time costs you the fare.
Other cruise passengers may join your group — private in size, not always in company.
Verify before you book
- Your all-aboard time against the 18:00 rule
- Who else is in the group
- What happens if the ship docks late
For a fuller game drive without leaving the province, Tala is the step up from PheZulu — a private reserve, with rhino on its list.
Africa Sun Safaris runs a 6-hour half-day safari from Durban, starting around 07:30, with pickups from cruise ships. It combines a 4x4 game drive at Tala Private Game Reserve with PheZulu’s village and reptile park.
Tala’s drive is where rhino come into the picture, along with giraffe, zebra, kudu and impala.
Price moves with group size on this one: the listing showed about $319 an adult, lower per head as more adults book.
- Time commitment
- About 6 hours from pickup.
- Getting there
- Pickup at the ship, per the listing.
- Suits
- Families with older kids, couples, anyone who wants rhino over reptiles.
- Ship or independent
- Independent. MSC’s Durban list shows no Tala tour.
Why it's worth considering
It’s about as near to a safari as a single Durban call is likely to get.
Pickup at the ship takes the transport question away.
The catch
A 07:30 start needs an early arrival and a quick disembarkation — check the ship’s clearance time first.
Gratuities aren’t included, and the per-person price is steep for one or two travelers.
Verify before you book
- Pickup time against your ship’s arrival
- The per-person price for your group size
- The operator’s refund terms if the ship runs late
These are the tours for people who’ve already seen the sights, or who’d rather taste the city than photograph it.
MSC’s Durban Sightseeing and Gin Tasting pairs a local distillery with time in the Botanic Gardens.
Its Sightseeing, Beer Tasting and Dance stops at Station Drive, the center of Durban’s craft beer, for several South African beers including a Zulu beer. A walk through the streets and markets follows, and it ends with a pantsula dance class.
Neither listing gives a duration or a price, so ask the excursion desk before you compare.
- Time commitment
- Ask the excursion desk.
- Getting there
- MSC coach from the terminal.
- Suits
- Couples, repeat visitors, groups of friends.
- Ship or independent
- Ship. These are MSC’s own products, sold before or during the cruise.
Why it's worth considering
Someone else handles the driving on a tasting day.
The dance class gets you moving — a lesson, not a show you watch from a seat.
The catch
Without a stated length, it’s hard to plan the rest of the day around.
Tastings and a dance class in Durban humidity is a lot for one afternoon — pace yourself.
Verify before you book
- Duration and price at the excursion desk
- Minimum age for the tastings
- How much walking the market section involves

Durban with the ship or on your own
Close in, keep it simple
uShaka and the beachfront don’t need a tour — a short taxi and a gate ticket cover it.
A ship’s coach to the aquarium adds cost and a fixed timetable to something you can run at your own pace.
For the city, a guide beats a map
Downtown is near, yet the advice is to move by car. A guided half-day gets you the market and the old center without stitching taxis together.
The private versions publish prices; for MSC’s, ask at the desk before you compare the two side by side.
Inland, mind the refund terms
The hills and Tala tours run about half a day to seven and a half hours. On a day that long, the ship’s promise to wait for its own tour has value.
Several private Durban listings say all sales are final — weigh that against the lower price.
How each option compares in Durban
| Excursion | Lean ship excursion when… | Independent works when… |
| uShaka and the beachfront | Not needed | Yes — a short taxi, or walk once staff confirm the route |
| Guided city loop | If you want the line’s back-to-ship guarantee | Private guide from the port, about 3½ hours |
| Valley of 1000 Hills and PheZulu | For a hands-off half-day | With a booked driver, tickets at the park |
| City and hills in one day | On a call that ends before 18:00 — take MSC’s half-day instead | Private small group, if the ship stays late |
| Tala game drive | Not on MSC’s list | With the operator’s ship pickup |
| Gin, beer and pantsula | These are MSC’s own tours | Book these through MSC |
Short answer
On a short call, take a taxi to uShaka and the beachfront and stay near the water. With a half-day, book the city loop or the 1000 Hills run — one, then back. Save Tala for a long call with an early arrival. Boarding here? Use the day before the cruise for the trip inland.

Durban port logistics: the terminal, the ride and the timing
From the ship into town
Ships berth at the Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal, which has two berths in the Point precinct. uShaka is close, and the city center is about 10 minutes on foot — though a taxi is the advised way in.
Taxis are available at the port, but no standard shuttle runs, so settle the taxi price before you set off.
Full terminal detail is on our Durban cruise port guide.
- Two berths, room for two large ships at once
- Tendering isn’t normally required
- Private guides meet passengers at the port
Getting back on time
Leave 45 to 60 minutes to get back to the ship from a city outing, and more from the hills.
Private full-day tours here set their own conditions — one wants a sailing no earlier than 18:00.
Money at the gate
The rand is the currency, and cards work at formal venues; small notes help with market stalls and tips.
uShaka’s reported prices from September 1, 2026 are R267 for one park and R399 for both, per adult.
Safety and paperwork
The State Department advises increased caution in South Africa for crime and civil unrest, and lists 10111 for emergencies.
U.S. visitors need two consecutive blank visa pages each time they enter.
