Durban in brief
Durban is where MSC bases its South African season — a place you board from as much as a place you visit.
The ship ties up at the Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal, opened in November 2023 in the Point precinct. It has two berths and is sized for about 4,000 passengers a day.
MSC Cruises built it with the African Armada Consortium and Transnet National Ports Authority. A joint venture, KwaZulu Cruise Terminal Limited, runs it.
Close on the map, not on foot.
Downtown Durban is about a 10-minute walk from the cruise port. Even so, the advice from port guides is to take a taxi, and the State Department warns that crime risk rises in city business districts after dark.
uShaka Marine World and the southern end of the beachfront are near the terminal too. Ask terminal staff about the pedestrian route before you set off — the short way on a map isn’t always the sensible one on foot.
No free shuttle is standard here — plan your own ride.
Taxis wait at the port, and your line may lay on a transfer of its own. Agree the fare and the pickup point before you leave — no official fare is posted.
Further out, the city spreads in three directions. The Botanic Gardens and Victoria Street Market are inland, uMhlanga is roughly 30 to 45 minutes up the coast, and the Valley of 1000 Hills lies west toward Pietermaritzburg.
If you’re boarding here, the bigger planning question is the date. MSC canceled MSC Armonia’s repositioning voyage through Suez in September 2026 and hasn’t said how the ship will get to South Africa — so check your Durban sailing is still on before you buy flights.
Which tours earn their fare, and which are a coach ride you could match with a taxi, is what our Durban shore excursion guide works through. Read it before you book through the ship.

Two berths in the Point precinct, with room for two large ships at once. Tendering isn’t normally needed.
About 6,000 square meters under one roof. MSC is the line that homeports here every season.
That’s the walking estimate to the city center. Take a taxi instead — that’s the local advice, whatever the map suggests.
uShaka Marine World and the southern beaches are close. Check the pedestrian access with terminal staff first.
Use a metered taxi from an established company, or an app ride whose plate and driver you’ve matched. Skip the street hails.
There isn’t one as standard. Ask your line whether it’s arranging one for your call or your embarkation day.
What's nearby, broadly
uShaka and the southern beachfront are the close ones. City Hall and Victoria Street Market are downtown, and the Golden Mile and Moses Mabhida Stadium are the usual stops on a city drive — a short ride, not a stroll.
The Botanic Gardens sit in the Berea, inland from the center. Founded in 1849, they’re described as the oldest surviving botanical garden in Africa.
The Valley of 1000 Hills is about 30 minutes from the city center by Visit Durban’s reckoning, with PheZulu Safari Park about 35 km out at Botha’s Hill. Tala, a private game reserve, sits further inland toward Pietermaritzburg. Treat any of those as a half-day at least — a morning, not a quick hop.

Durban is where MSC Armonia’s 2026/27 South African season begins, on November 27, 2026, with two- to 12-night sailings from here and Cape Town to Mozambique’s Portuguese Island and Pomene, Port Louis in Mauritius and La Possession in Réunion. The ship moves to Cape Town in March 2027 — see our MSC Armonia guide and our Cape Town cruise port guide for the other end of the season. South African rand, with cards at the formal places.
Durban runs on the rand (ZAR). Cards are widely taken at formal venues — keep small rand notes for tips and market stalls.
Ride with a company you can name.
The State Department points visitors to metered taxis from established firms, hotel taxis or tour buses. Minibus taxis and street-hailed cars are off limits to its own staff.
With Uber or another app, check the make, the plate and the driver’s photo before you get in. The State Department also suggests avoiding app pickups beside taxi ranks, because of friction between the two.
There’s no published fare from the terminal to town — agree it before the car moves.
The State Department advises increased caution.
Its South Africa guidance cites crime and civil unrest, and it flags armed robbery, smash-and-grab attacks and higher risk in business districts after dark. For police and emergencies, dial 10111.
Keep valuables out of sight and don’t walk alone at night. Turn down unofficial guides and drivers who approach you at the gate, however reasonable the offer sounds.
Swim where the lifeguards are.
Rip tides are common and dangerous on this coast, and the State Department also mentions sharks. Use lifeguarded beaches and follow the flags — a quiet stretch of sand is the wrong place to test the current.
Check your passport pages before you fly.
U.S. citizens need two consecutive completely blank visa pages on every arrival, or entry is refused. If you’re coming from a yellow fever country, you need the certificate at least 10 days before arrival.
Boarding here? Leave a margin.
King Shaka International is about 30 km north of the port. Fly in the day before, not the morning of — and confirm your sailing date with MSC first, given the canceled Suez repositioning.
The season runs through the southern summer, and summer here is humid — pack sun protection and light layers, not a heavy jacket.
