Cape Town

Cape Town puts the cruise terminal inside its busiest waterfront. Ships dock at E-Berth in Duncan Dock, run by the V&A Waterfront, and the Silo District and Zeitz MOCAA are about a five-minute walk from the terminal. The harder part is everything above the harbor. Table Mountain, Cape Point and the Winelands all need wheels — and the mountain needs the weather on your side.

Cape Town in brief

In Cape Town the ship ties up beside the V&A Waterfront, a shopping and dining district — not at a cargo quay out of town.

The Cape Town Cruise Terminal sits at E-Berth in Duncan Dock. Customs, immigration and baggage handling are in the building — so the formalities happen at the ship, not in town.

The V&A Waterfront has run the terminal since Transnet handed it over in December 2015, and the Waterfront later signed a 20-year agreement to keep it.

The terminal is a stop in its own right, not only a corridor.

Makers Landing, a food market of small South African producers, sits within the cruise terminal area. The building started life as a pre-cooling shed for fruit exports.

Walk out and the Silo District is about five minutes away — close enough to fit in on the way back, too. That’s where Zeitz MOCAA, the contemporary African art museum, opens daily.

Further along the Waterfront you reach the Nelson Mandela Gateway, where the Robben Island ferries leave, and the Two Oceans Aquarium, where the City Sightseeing hop-on bus has its first stop.

Above the harbor, you need a ride.

Table Mountain’s cableway, Kirstenbosch, Cape Point and the wine country around Stellenbosch are all beyond a comfortable walk — once you leave the water, this is a city for wheels. Taxis wait at the terminal building, and Uber and Bolt both work in Cape Town.

One planning rule matters more than the rest. The cableway runs weather permitting — so put it early in your stay, not on the last afternoon.

Many sailings here start or end in Cape Town rather than just calling — turnarounds were an estimated 68% of 2025/26 calls. If you have a night or two before boarding, that’s your margin for the mountain.

Which tours earn their fare, and which are a drive past things you could reach for the price of a cab, is what our Cape Town shore excursion guide sorts out. Read it before you book through the ship.

On foot from the ship

Docked
E-Berth, Duncan Dock

The Cape Town Cruise Terminal, with customs, immigration and baggage handling inside. Search “Cape Town Cruise Terminal” in a map app, not just the port.

In the terminal
Makers Landing food market

Local producers and small food businesses inside the cruise terminal area — worth a look before you head out, or on the way back.

∼5 min
Silo District and Zeitz MOCAA

An easy walk from the terminal, on the Waterfront. The museum opens 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30, and under-18s go free.

On foot
Nelson Mandela Gateway

The Robben Island ferry terminal is on the V&A Waterfront. Arrive 30 minutes before your boat, since the gates shut 10 minutes before it sails.

Taxis
At the terminal building

Metered taxis wait at the terminal, and Uber and Bolt operate in the city. Prices and waits jump when a big ship empties at once.

Hop-on bus
City Sightseeing, Stop 1

The bus starts outside the Two Oceans Aquarium and stops at the Table Mountain cableway. A paid ticket, not a free shuttle.

What's nearby, broadly

Makers Landing Silo District Zeitz MOCAA V&A Waterfront Two Oceans Aquarium Robben Island Table Mountain Bo-Kaap Kirstenbosch Boulders penguin colony Cape Point Stellenbosch Winelands

The first five are on the Waterfront itself, so they’re a walk. Robben Island is a ferry from the Gateway — about 3.5 hours, ferry included.

Table Mountain, Bo-Kaap and Kirstenbosch sit off the Waterfront, so plan on a car or the hop-on bus. Boulders and Cape Point sit down the peninsula and fill a day — the operator tours that cover them run about eight to nine hours. The Winelands take a similar slice of time, so pick one long drive, not two.

Cape Town is a turnaround port as much as a port of call. Its 2026/27 season opens on November 27, 2026 with MSC Armonia, which starts in Durban and moves to Cape Town in March 2027 for short Walvis Bay and coastal sailings — see our MSC Armonia guide. Holland America’s Volendam calls on its 2027 Grand World Voyage, and Silversea’s Silver Dawn leaves Cape Town on April 11, 2027. With the Red Sea off many routes, world cruises such as Oceania Vista’s now go around the Cape instead. About 50 ship calls a season are on the books — fewer than the record 83 of 2024/25. Open Cape Town on the Seabound Cruise Atlas to see where it sits on the route.

Practical notes

Current as of October 23, 2026 Review periodically

South African rand, and cards do most of the work.

The currency is the South African rand (ZAR). Robben Island takes rand and cards and turns away foreign cash, and the Cape Point and Boulders gates take debit and credit cards only.

Table Mountain tickets are cheaper online.

From July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027, a return trip costs R475 for an adult online and R530 at the ticket office. Children aged 4 to 17 pay R230 online, and under-4s ride free — buy ahead, not at the window.

Buy from the cableway’s own site. It says only tickets issued through Webtickets are valid, and they’re good for seven days — if the weather closes the mountain, use it the next open day or claim a refund.

Park fees on the peninsula go up on November 1, 2026.

Foreign visitors pay R592 per adult and R288 per child at Cape Point from that date, against R515 and R250 before it. Boulders rises to R282 for an adult and R138 for a child.

Use a metered taxi or an app ride, and check the car.

The State Department points visitors to metered taxis from established companies. For Uber or Bolt, match the plate, car and driver in the app before you get in, and ignore anyone offering a ride outside it.

No official port-to-city fare is published — agree or check the price before you set off.

The State Department advises increased caution for crime.

Its South Africa guidance cites crime and civil unrest. It also advises against walking alone, especially after dark — so after an evening at the Waterfront, take a car back rather than strolling to the berth through the port roads.

U.S. citizens enter without a visa for stays of 90 days or less. You need two consecutive blank visa pages in your passport on arrival, or you can be refused entry — blank pages, not just room for a stamp.

The season is the southern summer.

The 2026/27 cruise season opens on November 27, and the sailings on this page run through to April. Robben Island’s peak timetable covers September to April. Brush fires can affect the Western Cape from December to February, so check local news if you’re heading into the hills.
