One line, two trains, a night apart
You could fly from Johannesburg to Cape Town in a morning. These trains take two or three days on purpose, and the six lines below explain what that buys.
- Pretoria (Capital Park)Day 1 · 10:00Board at Rovos Rail Station; your bags are tagged and waiting in your suite.
- HighveldDay 1Open grassland as the train heads southwest out of Gauteng.
- Kimberleyoff-train stopA guided visit to the Big Hole and the Diamond Mine Museum.
- Great Karooscenic stretchThe dry interior, best from the open-air balcony of the observation car.
- Matjiesfonteinoff-train stopA Victorian village founded in 1890 as a refreshment stop, with a museum on the platform.
- Cape Winelandsfinal morningMountain ranges and vineyards on the run to the coast.
- Cape TownDay 4 · 15:00Arrival after three nights and about 1,600 km.
Rovos Rail’s 2026 running times: Pretoria 10:00 to Cape Town 15:00 on day 4; northbound, Cape Town 11:00 to Pretoria 16:00. Rovos warns of a line closure into Pretoria station, with Meyerton as the alternative arrival, so check your confirmation. Fares per person sharing, October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027, from SA Rail, an agent: Pullman R54,000, Deluxe R78,000, Royal R104,000.
Rovos Rail or the Blue Train: the head-to-head
Both trains run the same rails between the same two cities, and fares sit within a few thousand rand. Here’s where they split.
Pick Rovos Rail if
- You want the extra night, two off-train stops and the biggest suite on either train
- You’d like to go on to Victoria Falls or East Africa by rail
- A train with no TVs or radios sounds like the point
Pick the Blue Train if
- Two nights is enough, and you’d rather have a butler than a bigger room
- You’re traveling with young children
- You want the once-a-year Kruger journey in late June
Our verdict: Rovos is the better-value ride, and the Blue Train is the more pampered one. If you’re choosing on price per night, Rovos wins; on price per trip, the Blue Train’s shorter run is cheaper.
Neither is a transport choice. Ride whichever matches the trip you’re building, then book the hotel at each end.
The suites, measured
Three nights in a 7 m² room feels different from two. Measure the cabin against the length of the trip before you pick a grade.
| Suite | Size | Beds | Bathroom | Per carriage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rovos Pullman | ~7 m² | Sofa by day; double or bunks at night | Shower, toilet, basin | 5 |
| Rovos Pullman Gold (long journeys) | ~7 m² | Lengthways twin, converts to double | Shower, toilet, basin | 5 |
| Rovos Deluxe | ~10 m² | Double or twin, small lounge | Shower, toilet, basin | 3 |
| Rovos Royal | ~16 m² | Double or twin, private lounge | Victorian bath and separate shower | 2 |
| Blue Train De Luxe | 4 × 2 m (~8 m²) | Three twin, one double | Marble bathroom with shower | 4 |
| Blue Train Luxury | 5.13 × 2 m (~10 m²) | Twin or double | Marble bathroom with bath | 3 |
Rovos sizes from Rovos Rail’s own suite pages; Blue Train dimensions from SA Rail, an agent. Rovos also lists a safe, a full-size fridge in Deluxe and Royal, a hairdryer and daily servicing in every suite. Blue Train suites have underfloor heating and individually controlled air conditioning, per the same agent.
What the trains cost, 2026 to 2028
The trains price in rand, so the dollar cost moves with the exchange rate. Rovos resets its fares every October 1; the Blue Train charges more each September to mid-November.

Per person sharing, one way, from SA Rail and Luxury Trains SA, two South African agents; neither railway’s own rate page loaded for us. Rovos suites run Pullman, Deluxe, Royal; Blue Train suites run De Luxe, Luxury. Single travelers add 50% on both trains’ Cape Town routes. 2026 Blue Train fares were R40,685 and R51,905, or R50,220 and R63,420 from September 1 to November 15.
Agents’ fares divided by nights aboard, converted at the Banque de France rates for October 23, 2026 (about R16.6 to the dollar).
Per-day math
Line the train up against a safari lodge
Two train fares are in as a starting figure, converted at about R16.6 to the dollar. Add a lodge or tour from your shortlist.
Days count the calendar days on the trip: Rovos runs day 1 to day 4, the Blue Train day 1 to day 3. Rand fares are agents’ figures; the dollar amount moves with the exchange rate.
A night on Rovos in its smallest suite costs less than a night on the Blue Train in its smallest. The Blue Train’s trip is still cheaper overall, because it’s one night shorter.
Agents list one more sweetener on both: a free hotel night before or after on the Cape Town route. SA Rail lists it in Rovos’s Cape Town, Victoria Falls and Durban inclusions; the Blue Train’s offer runs through the end of 2026. Ask us to confirm it in writing on your booking.
What the fare covers on each train
Think of both as all-inclusive hotels that move. Budget for tips and the flights to and from the train, and not much else.
| Item | Rovos Rail (Cape Town route) | The Blue Train |
|---|---|---|
| Suite and all meals | Included | Plus high tea |
| Alcoholic drinks | All except French Champagne | All except French Champagne and caviar |
| Off-train excursions | Kimberley and Matjiesfontein, with entrance fees | Kimberley’s Big Hole |

Inclusions from SA Rail and Luxury Trains SA (agents) and a 2025 Blue Train rate sheet. The Rovos tip guide is from an agent’s Rovos FAQ: roughly US$10–20 per person per night, in the envelope in your suite, which the Train Manager shares among the staff.
Where else the trains go
Cape Town is the famous one. Rovos also runs north to the Zambezi and east to the Indian Ocean, and the Blue Train makes one trip a year to Kruger.
The classic run, both trains
Rovos runs it in three nights via Kimberley and Matjiesfontein; the Blue Train in two via Kimberley. Both run in either direction.
- Rovos 2026: south 10:00 to 15:00 on day 4; north 11:00 to 16:00
- Blue Train: Pretoria departures on selected Mondays, Cape Town departures on selected Thursdays, per agents
- Blue Train Pretoria check-in at Irene Station since January 2025
Rovos Rail to the Zambezi
Three or four nights north across the Tropic of Capricorn and the Limpopo, through Bulawayo and on to Victoria Falls. Rovos says it can route through Botswana.
- A game drive in Hwange National Park
- Matobo National Park and Rhodes’s grave on the four-night version only
- From R66,500 per person sharing in a Pullman (2026–27, agent)
Rovos Rail’s fifteen-night epic
Matjiesfontein, Kimberley and Pretoria, then two nights in Madikwe for game drives, a night at the Victoria Falls Hotel, the Tazara line through Zambia and a game drive in the Selous (Nyerere National Park).
- From US$18,200 per person in a Pullman (2027, agent); 16 nights in 2026
- Tanzania requires a visa: $100, online or on arrival
- An agent’s FAQ says a doctor travels on this journey
Rovos Rail’s other journeys
Durban takes two nights. Longer journeys run to Namibia (11 nights), the African Collage (12), the Southern Cross (11), the African Trilogy (15), the Copper Trail to Lobito (14) and the Malawi Meander (16).
- Pretoria to Durban from R49,900 per person (2026–27, agent)
- Durban is also a cruise port: see our Durban guide
- Ask us for the year each long journey runs; not every route departs every year
The Blue Train’s Kruger journey

- From R83,190 per person in De Luxe; R103,975 in Luxury (2027, agent)
- Cognac and Cuban cigars are in the inclusions list
- Late June is the dry winter, when the bush thins out
A day aboard Rovos Rail, by the bell
The day runs to a timetable Rovos publishes. Here it is, with where you’ll be in between.
Breakfast in the dining car
Taken at your own pace in the dining car; the bar opens at 07:00 too.
The off-train visit
On the Cape Town run, a guided stop at Kimberley’s Big Hole or a walk around Matjiesfontein.
Lunch
One sitting in the dining car, with South African wines in the fare.
Tea
Then the observation car’s open balcony as the light drops over the Karoo.
Formal dinner
One sitting; men wear a collar and tie, per an agent’s Rovos FAQ.
The lounge car
The bar stays open until about 1am. There are no TVs or radios aboard.
Pairing the train with a safari and Cape Town
A luxury train covers the scenery between the big sights. It doesn’t replace the game drive, so build both into the trip.
The neat order is safari first, train second. Two to four nights in Kruger or a private reserve such as the Sabi Sand, then a flight to Johannesburg for Pretoria and the train into Cape Town. Our South Africa safari guide compares the parks, the lodges and the tours.
Kruger’s daily fee for foreign adults is R692 from November 1, 2026, per SANParks’ new rate card. Private reserves run open vehicles off-road and after dark; the national park doesn’t.
Pack for the bush flight, not the train. Federal Air allows 20 kg in soft bags on its 2026 Sabi Sabi shuttle, and an agent’s Rovos FAQ asks for a 15 kg soft bag on plane transfers. Rovos itself sets no official limit and suggests two large suitcases at most.
Want the safari aboard? Rovos’s Victoria Falls run includes a Hwange game drive, the Dar es Salaam journey spends two nights in Madikwe, and the Blue Train’s June trip spends a day in Kruger.
One tour does it all. Great Rail Journeys’ 2027 Grand Tour of South Africa runs 17 days with 11 nights aboard Rovos in a Pullman suite: a sunrise safari in Kruger, Eswatini, Hluhluwe, Durban, Nambiti, Addo and the Garden Route, then three hotel nights in Cape Town. It’s from $13,499 per person, with no more than 24 guests and a tour manager throughout.
Ending in Cape Town? Stay two or three nights; Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula fill them. If you’re sailing on, our Cape Town cruise port guide covers the terminal. What a safari costs prices the lodge half, and African safaris helps if you’re still choosing a country.
Booking it through Seabound
There’s no fee for our help; the railway, lodge or tour company pays our commission. We line up the train, the safari and the Cape Town nights so the flights and transfers connect.
The best months to ride
South Africa has no off-season for these trains. The month changes the price and the safari, not whether the train runs.
Winter: the safari half is at its best
Safari.com recommends May to September for Greater Kruger, when the bush thins and animals gather at water. Train fares sit at the lower rate.
- No regular Blue Train departures in June; agents’ July 2027 dates disagree, so confirm
- The Blue Train’s Kruger journey runs in late June
- Rovos runs all year
Spring: the Blue Train’s high season
The Blue Train charges its high fares from September 1 to November 15. September still sits in the dry season Safari.com recommends for Kruger.
- Rovos’s new rates start each October 1 (R59,900 Pullman from October 2027)
- Book early for September and October departures
- November departures fall back to the lower Blue Train rate after the 15th
Summer: value lodges and long days
Safari.com describes the green summer as the season of baby animals, value lodge rates and afternoon storms. Both trains keep running.
- Blue Train 2027 lower rate applies January to August and from November 16
- The Blue Train’s last 2027 departures fall in mid-December, per agents
- Rovos fares for this period are the October-to-September rate
Passports, visas and safety
The Cape Town run stays inside South Africa. Go north and you’ll cross borders, so check each country’s rules for US citizens before you book.
For health, read the CDC’s Travelers’ Health pages for each country on your route and talk to your doctor. Malaria and yellow fever rules differ between South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania.
South Africa is UTC+2 with no daylight saving, so it’s six hours ahead of US Eastern in summer and seven in winter. You’ll fly into Johannesburg or Cape Town; arrive a day early for a train.
Children, solo travelers, access and tips
Neither train is built around children, and both price cabins for two. Here are the rules that decide whether it works for your group.
| Item | Rovos Rail | The Blue Train |
|---|---|---|
| Children | Not under 3; 3–9 pay 75%; 10+ full fare; over two nights not advised under 13 | Up to two under-6s free sharing; 6–11 half; 12+ full; no children in the Club Car |
| Family sharing | An under-5 may share with two adults in Deluxe or Royal only | Max two adults and two under-6s per suite (Kruger journey) |
| Solo | Add 50% on the Cape Town, Victoria Falls and Durban routes | Add 50% |
| Accessibility | Not suitable for wheelchair users; walking difficulties need an able-bodied companion | Not published; ask us |
| Wi-Fi | Station lounges; poor while moving | Listed on the Kruger journey |
| Tips | R100–300 per person a night suggested | Not included; ask for guidance |
Rovos rules from agents (The Luxury Train Club and The Luxury Train Travel Company); Blue Train rules from SA Rail and Luxury Trains SA. Agents note the Rovos train has an adult atmosphere and no child facilities.
Deposits, final payment and when to book
These trains are small and the money goes in early. Settle the dates first, then the suite.
Rovos holds a suite for up to seven days without payment, an agent’s Rovos FAQ says. After that, the deposit is non-refundable and the balance is due 90 days before departure.
Cancel inside 90 days and you lose the full fare. That’s the reason to buy insurance the day you pay the deposit; our how-far-ahead guide has the purchase windows.
The Blue Train’s deposit and cancellation terms aren’t published on the pages we read. Ask us and we’ll get them in writing before you pay.
Book Rovos once your dates are set, especially for September and October. A standard train carries 72 guests at most, and the Royal suites are two per carriage.

Who these trains suit
Book it if
- You want two or three slow days between a safari and Cape Town
- You like dressing for dinner and lingering in the lounge car
- You’d rather see the Karoo from a window than from a car
- You’re a couple sharing a suite; the price works best for two
Look elsewhere if
- You’re short on time; a flight covers the distance in a morning
- You use a wheelchair; an agent’s Rovos FAQ says the train isn’t suitable
- You’re solo on a budget; a 50% single supplement applies
- You want game drives every day; book a lodge instead and fly
- You want a seat-priced day train; see scenic rail journeys
Our take
For most first-time visitors, the Blue Train’s two nights or Rovos’s three into Cape Town is the right dose. Put the safari first and the train second, so you finish relaxed at the coast.
Pick Rovos for value per night and the bigger suites, the Blue Train for butler service and a shorter trip. If Victoria Falls is on the list, Rovos takes you there by rail.
Send us your month and who’s traveling. We’ll price both trains with the safari and the Cape Town hotel, side by side.

What South Africa rail travelers ask us
Which is better, Rovos Rail or the Blue Train?
It depends on what you want from the ride. Rovos takes three nights from Pretoria to Cape Town, stops at Kimberley and Matjiesfontein, and its Royal suites are about 16 m² with a Victorian bath. The Blue Train takes two nights, stops at Kimberley and offers a 24-hour butler. Per night, a Rovos Pullman suite costs less.
How much does Rovos Rail cost?
From October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027, a South African agent lists Pretoria to Cape Town at R54,000 per person sharing a Pullman suite, R78,000 in a Deluxe and R104,000 in a Royal: roughly US$3,250 to $6,270 for the three nights. Fares rise to R59,900 for a Pullman from October 2027. Traveling alone adds 50%.
How much does the Blue Train cost?
Agents list 2027 Pretoria to Cape Town at R45,565 per person sharing a De Luxe suite and R58,135 in a Luxury suite, except September 1 to November 15, when the fares are R56,245 and R71,030. That’s roughly US$2,745 to $4,280 for the two nights. A single traveler pays 50% more.
What is the dress code on Rovos Rail and the Blue Train?
Smart casual by day on both. Dinner is formal: Rovos Rail asks men for a collar and tie, with a jacket optional, according to an agent’s Rovos FAQ. Agents describe dinner on the Blue Train as formal, too. Long Rovos journeys add themed evenings.
Can children ride Rovos Rail or the Blue Train?
Yes, with limits. Rovos doesn’t accept children under 3, charges ages 3 to 9 at 75% of the adult rate and doesn’t recommend trips longer than two nights for under-13s, per agents. On the Blue Train, agents say up to two children aged 5 or under share their parents’ suite free, and ages 6 to 11 pay half.
Can I combine a luxury train with a Kruger safari?
Yes. The usual pairing is two to four nights at a Kruger-area lodge, flying in, plus the train to or from Cape Town. The Blue Train runs one Kruger journey a year in late June. Great Rail Journeys’ 2027 Grand Tour of South Africa spends 11 nights aboard Rovos, with game drives in Kruger, Hluhluwe and Addo.
Do I need a visa for the Victoria Falls or Dar es Salaam journeys?
South Africa doesn’t require one from US citizens for stays under 90 days. Zimbabwe does, sold on arrival for about $30, and Zambia doesn’t. Tanzania requires a tourist visa ($100, apply online or on arrival) and six months of passport validity. Check Botswana too, since the Victoria Falls train can route through it.
Is Rovos Rail safe?
A Rovos train derailed in southern Namibia, about 100 km from Keetmanshoop, on March 1, 2026, and two people died. TransNamib investigated, and its rail safety review has backed reforms. The State Department rates South Africa Level 2, “Exercise increased caution.” Ask us for the current status of any route through Namibia.
