Six things to know before you pick a Canadian train
You want to see Canada from a window, and you want to know which window. These six facts decide most of it, and the route below is the one most people mean by “across Canada by train.”
- TorontoDay 1 · 9:55amDeparts Union Station on Wednesdays and Sundays and reaches Capreol, in northern Ontario, by evening.
- Sioux LookoutDay 2 · middayNorthwestern Ontario’s lakes and forest, on the way to Manitoba.
- WinnipegDay 2 · 7:30–9:30pmAbout two hours on the ground while the train is serviced.
- Saskatoon & EdmontonDay 3The prairies by day; Saskatoon mid-morning, Edmonton in the evening.
- JasperDay 4 · 6:30–9:30amAbout three hours in the mountain town before the train heads west.
- KamloopsDay 4 · about 7:00pmDown out of the mountains into the BC Interior, at dinner time.
- VancouverDay 5 · 8:00amJourney’s end, often later than scheduled. Plan nothing tight that day.
Times from the 2026 timetable as published by Seat61; VIA’s 2027 timetable may differ. 4,466 km in all. Fares on this page are VIA Rail’s own starting fares.
Four trains worth crossing a border for
VIA Rail runs three long-distance trains worth a vacation, and Rocky Mountaineer runs the famous one. Tap through each.
VIA Rail’s The Canadian
Running since 1955, through northern Ontario, the prairies and the Rockies. Sleeper Plus passengers use the Skyline, Dining and Park cars; Prestige adds the Park car’s dome, reserved.
- Sleeper Plus: berths or private cabins, meals included, shared showers
- Prestige: a double bed, private shower, concierge, bar included
- VIA plans to renew its long-distance fleet within the decade
Rocky Mountaineer
Glass-dome trains with a hotel night in Kamloops. First Passage to the West runs to Banff or Lake Louise; Journey through the Clouds runs to Jasper.
- GoldLeaf: bi-level dome, dining room downstairs, outdoor platform
- SilverLeaf: single-level dome, meals at your seat
- Rainforest to Gold Rush looks likely to have ended after 2026
VIA Rail’s Ocean
North America’s oldest continuously operated named passenger train, first run in 1904. Three trips a week each way, about 22 to 23 hours, along the St. Lawrence and Chaleur Bay.
- Economy or Sleeper Plus; Sleeper Plus includes meals and Wi-Fi
- Berths, cabins for one with a private toilet, cabins for two with a private washroom
- A reseller lists fares from CA$434 for a berth; confirm the year when you book
Jasper to Prince Rupert
Two daytime legs with a night in Prince George, three times a week. The highlight is Mount Robson; the last stretch follows the Skeena River to the coast.
- Economy all year; Touring class in summer adds the dome and Park cars and meals
- Book your Prince George hotel unless a package includes it
- At Prince Rupert, ferries run to Haida Gwaii, Port Hardy and Southeast Alaska
Most of our readers fly to Toronto or Vancouver for these. From Texas, Houston and Dallas fly nonstop to Vancouver; our Florida and Texas flights guide has the routes.
Pick the train by the landscape first. Prairies and the long view: The Canadian. Mountains in daylight: Rocky Mountaineer. Fall color and the Atlantic: the Ocean.
Sleeper across Canada, or daylight through the Rockies
This is the decision most Canada rail trips turn on. One sells the journey; the other sells the view.
The Canadian is better value per night, not per mountain. Rocky Mountaineer costs more for two days than a berth costs for four nights, and it never misses a peak to darkness.
Some people do both: The Canadian to Jasper, the Rockies by road, and Rocky Mountaineer back to Vancouver. If that’s you, ask us to price the pieces together.

The 2027 fares, in both currencies
Every fare here is in Canadian dollars, which flatters it for US travelers. Run your class and season through the tool for the US-dollar figure.
| The Canadian, one way per person (CA$) | Economy | Sleeper Plus berth | Sleeper Plus cabin for two | Prestige |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto–Vancouver, summer 2027 | 514 | 1,750 | 3,268 | 8,123 |
| Toronto–Vancouver, winter 2026–27 | 514 | 1,083 | 1,960 | 6,040 |
| Toronto–Jasper, summer 2027 | 424 | 1,310 | 2,595 | 6,120 |
| Toronto–Jasper, winter 2026–27 | 424 | 811 | 1,467 | 4,551 |
VIA Rail’s starting fares, before tax.
First Passage to the West, rail-only, two days with the Kamloops hotel night, per an authorized seller.
The Canadian, in US dollars
What does your seat cost?
VIA Rail’s own one-way starting fares, per person before tax. Add today’s exchange rate to see it in US dollars.
Starting fares sell out first and vary by departure. Sales tax is extra. Prestige is priced per person in a cabin for two.
Season moves VIA’s price more than anything else: a Sleeper Plus berth to Vancouver costs CA$667 more in summer than in winter. If snow on the Rockies sounds good to you, travel November to April.
Rocky Mountaineer works the other way round. April is its cheapest month and September its dearest, and the Vancouver and Banff hotels aren’t in the rail-only fare. Price both ends before you compare.
Day four on The Canadian: Jasper and the mountains
The Rockies day, westbound. It’s the one day of four that most people ride this train for.
Arrive in Jasper
About three hours on the platform and in town while the train is serviced; the platform closes during servicing, so reboard when called.
Depart west
Into the mountains toward British Columbia. Dome seats are first come, first served in Sleeper Plus; Prestige has reserved Park car seats.
Brunch in the dining car
Seat61 describes a cooked breakfast or lighter lunch dishes, served roughly 10:30am to 1:30pm. Tea, coffee and juice are free in the Skyline car.
Kamloops North
The train reaches the BC Interior around dinner time.
Dinner, then the last night
Dinner sittings are reserved; in summer they run around 5, 7 and 9pm, and the 7pm fills fastest. Vancouver is due at 8:00am.
When each train is at its best
The trains run on different calendars. Pick the season first, and the fare follows.
Summer: long days, high fares
Every train runs, Rocky Mountaineer included, and the Jasper–Prince Rupert line adds its summer Touring class. VIA’s summer fares are its highest.
- Alaska season lines up: Holland America’s 2027 cruisetours run May through September
- On the Ocean, Sleeper Plus cabins often sell out in June to August, per a reseller
- Book early if you want a cabin for two
Fall: color and the season’s end
The Ocean runs through peak fall foliage in September and October. Rocky Mountaineer’s last 2027 First Passage departs October 8.
- Rocky Mountaineer’s September fares are its highest of 2027
- The Canadian is still on summer fares to October 31
- Pair with a Canada & New England cruise from the Northeast
Winter: snow, quiet and lower fares
The Canadian and the Ocean run all year. A Sleeper Plus berth to Vancouver starts at CA$1,083, and Seat61 reports Sleeper Plus passengers get the Park car without restriction.
- Rocky Mountaineer doesn’t run in winter
- Expect cold and short days
- Keep the buffer day at the end, as in any season
Spring: the bargain shoulder
Rocky Mountaineer opens its season April 12, 2027 at its lowest fares: CA$2,399 in SilverLeaf. VIA is still on winter fares until April 30.
- Few guided Rockies tours start this early; Cosmos’s first 2027 departure is April 23
- Ask us which hotels are open yet
- A good month to pair both trains for less
Rail tours: someone else books the hotels
Riding the train is simple. Lining up the hotels at each end, the transfers and a day in Jasper is the work a rail tour does for you.
| Tour | Days | Route | Train | From, per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Globus Great Canadian Rail Journey | 14 | Toronto–Vancouver | The Canadian, Sleeper Plus | $7,349 (May 10, 2027) |
| Cosmos Canadian Train Odyssey | 15 | Toronto–Vancouver | The Canadian, three nights to Jasper | £4,949 on Cosmos’s UK site (May 2027); ask us for US pricing |
| Trafalgar Canada’s Rockies with Rocky Mountaineer | 8 | Calgary–Vancouver | Rocky Mountaineer, SilverLeaf or GoldLeaf | $4,415 SilverLeaf · $5,056 GoldLeaf (2027) |
| Trafalgar Spectacular Canadian Rockies with Rocky Mountaineer | 10 | Vancouver round trip | Rocky Mountaineer | $5,545 (2027) |
| Trafalgar Spectacular Rockies and Glaciers of Alberta | 9 | Calgary–Vancouver | Rocky Mountaineer, SilverLeaf | $6,845 (2027) |
| Collette Canadian Rockies Featuring Rocky Mountaineer | 8 | Vancouver–Calgary | Rocky Mountaineer | $8,199 (2027) |
| Rocky Mountaineer Rockies Refined (new) | 10 | Vancouver to the Rockies | GoldLeaf, Fairmont Gold rooms | Not yet published |
Trafalgar and Collette prices are from a US reseller’s 2027 listing; Globus and Cosmos from their own sites. Confirm on your date.
A rail tour is the easy way to do The Canadian well. Globus and Cosmos add the Rockies by road after the train, and the hotels, transfers and Ice Explorer are booked for you.
Rail specialists such as Railbookers also sell VIA Rail trips with hotels as independent packages, with no group or guide. Our Canadian Rockies guide compares the coach tours that skip the train.
Pairing the train with an Alaska cruise
A Canadian train and an Alaska cruise share a city and a season. The trick is the day in between.
Vancouver is the hinge. The Canadian ends there, Rocky Mountaineer starts there, and many Alaska cruises sail from there; see our Vancouver cruise port guide.
Packaged versions take the guesswork out. Cosmos sells a 16-day Western Canada by Rail with Alaska Cruise from $6,334, and Globus a 17-day Great Resorts of the Canadian Rockies with Rocky Mountaineer and a Holland America cruise from $9,733 (2027).
Globus also sells its Great Canadian Rail Journey with an Alaska cruise, and Cosmos a 22-day Canadian Train Odyssey with one. Holland America, Princess and Oceania pair their own 2027 Alaska sailings with Rocky Mountaineer.
The northern option is rarer: the Jasper–Prince Rupert train meets Alaska Marine Highway ferries at Prince Rupert. It’s for travelers with time, not a schedule.
The rule we give every client
Never end The Canadian on embarkation day. It can arrive hours late, and Seat61 advises leaving 24 hours before any onward booking. Book a Vancouver hotel the night before the ship.
Order matters
Rocky Mountaineer runs both ways, so you can ride it before or after the cruise. Our Alaska cruisetours guide covers the Denali side, and Alaska cruises the ships.
Prefer the Atlantic? The Ocean ends in Halifax, a stop on many Canada and New England cruises; our Halifax port guide covers the waterfront.
Passports, money, bags and booking
Canada is easy for US travelers. The paperwork is light; the currency and the timetable are the details that catch people.
US citizens can enter Canada with a passport, a passport card or a NEXUS card. Flying home from Canada needs the passport book, so bring it. The State Department rates Canada Level 1, “Exercise normal precautions” (June 5, 2026).
All the fares here are in Canadian dollars and exclude sales tax. Your card will convert at the day’s rate; ask your bank about foreign transaction fees before you go.
Stopping in the parks costs extra: Banff charges CA$12.25 per adult per day, and Parks Canada’s Discovery Pass is CA$83.50. Rocky Mountaineer’s rail-only fare doesn’t include it.
Luggage: VIA publishes its allowances on its own baggage page; check them for your class, and pack a small overnight bag for the cabin either way. Rocky Mountaineer’s last published terms allowed two checked pieces.
Cancellation: Rocky Mountaineer’s last published terms (2023) kept 20% from 61 days out and 100% inside 45 days. Insure as soon as you pay; our purchase-window guide explains why.

Who Canada by train suits
Book it if
- You want to see the country’s size: the Shield, the prairies and the mountains in one trip
- A berth, a dining car and a dome car sound like a vacation in themselves
- You’re pairing the Rockies with an Alaska cruise from Vancouver
- You’d rather ride to Halifax than fly, especially in fall color
- You don’t mind a timetable setting the pace
Look elsewhere if
- You need to arrive on schedule; The Canadian can run hours late
- You want every mountain in daylight on a sleeper; take Rocky Mountaineer instead
- Four nights with shared showers would wear thin; Prestige solves it at a price
- You’re traveling in winter and want the Rocky Mountaineer; it doesn’t run then
- You have a week and want to see Banff and Jasper properly; a Rockies coach tour covers more ground
Our take
For a first Canadian rail trip, take The Canadian in a Sleeper Plus cabin for two, westbound in summer, and add a night in Vancouver at the end. It’s the country’s great journey at a fair price per night.
If the mountains are the point, take Rocky Mountaineer, and if you want both, let a Globus or Cosmos rail tour join them up. Book early for summer, and keep the buffer day.

What Canada rail travelers ask us
How long is the train across Canada?
VIA Rail’s The Canadian covers 4,466 km from Toronto to Vancouver in four nights. On the 2026 timetable it leaves Toronto at 9:55am on Wednesdays and Sundays and is due in Vancouver at 8:00am on the fifth day, after stops including Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper and Kamloops.
How much does The Canadian cost?
VIA Rail’s starting one-way fares per person, before tax, for summer 2027 (May to October) are CA$514 in Economy, CA$1,750 for a Sleeper Plus upper berth, CA$3,268 in a Sleeper Plus cabin for two and CA$8,123 in Prestige. Winter 2026–27 starts lower: CA$1,083, CA$1,960 and CA$6,040.
What is the difference between Sleeper Plus and Prestige?
Sleeper Plus gives you a berth or private cabin, meals in the dining car and access to the Skyline and Park cars, with shared showers. Prestige adds a cabin with a sofa that becomes a double bed, a private shower, a personal concierge, the bar including alcohol, and reserved seats in the Park, Panorama and Dining cars.
Is The Canadian or Rocky Mountaineer better?
They do different jobs. The Canadian is a four-night sleeper across the country, with meals and a dome car, from CA$1,750 for a berth in summer 2027. Rocky Mountaineer is a two-day daylight train from Vancouver to Banff or Jasper with a hotel night in Kamloops, from CA$2,399. Pick The Canadian for the journey and the prairies; pick Rocky Mountaineer if every mountain mile must be in daylight.
Does The Canadian run on time?
Not reliably. It shares track with freight trains and can run hours late, so Seat61 advises not booking onward travel within 24 hours of the scheduled arrival. If you’re meeting an Alaska cruise in Vancouver, arrive at least a day before embarkation.
What is VIA Rail’s Ocean?
An overnight train between Montreal and Halifax, 1,346 km, three times a week in each direction, in Economy or Sleeper Plus. It first ran in 1904 and is described as the oldest continuously operated named passenger train in North America. Sleeper Plus includes meals.
Can I combine a Canadian train with an Alaska cruise?
Yes. Globus sells a Great Canadian Rail Journey with an Alaska cruise, Cosmos a 22-day Canadian Train Odyssey with an Alaska cruise and a 16-day Western Canada by Rail with Alaska Cruise, and Holland America, Princess and Oceania pair 2027 Alaska cruises with Rocky Mountaineer. Most start or end in Vancouver.
Do US citizens need a passport to take the train in Canada?
To enter Canada you can use a US passport, passport card or NEXUS card, but flying home from Canada takes a passport book or another approved document, so bring the passport book. The State Department rates Canada Level 1, “Exercise normal precautions” (advisory issued June 5, 2026).
