Six decisions that shape an Iberia tour
You’ve probably picked the cities already. The decisions that change the trip are the month, the group size and how many dinners you’ll eat on your own.
- Lisbon3 nightsA guided city tour and Portuguese dinners, from the Four Seasons Hotel Ritz.
- Évora1 nightA night in the Alentejo at the Convento do Espinheiro, a converted convent.
- Seville2 nightsA horse-and-carriage ride and a walk with a local guide.
- Marbella2 nightsThe climb from the coast to cliff-top Ronda.
- Granada2 nightsThe Alhambra with a local guide, and a private flamenco performance.
- Madrid3 nightsA guided tour of the Prado, steps from The Palace hotel.
Tauck Spain and Portugal, 14 days, from $8,990 per person (2026–2028 departures). Stops and nights from Tauck’s itinerary page.
Spring, fall and the July heat inland
Iberia’s climate swings more than first-timers expect. The coast and the interior can feel like different countries in the same week.
Spring
Rick Steves rates spring and fall the best mix of weather, crowds and long days in both countries. Spring adds the festivals.
- Holy Week processions and Seville’s April Fair (it sometimes slips into May)
- Holy Week moves every year; check its dates against your tour
- Spring is also when inland Spain is most comfortable for walking
Summer
The coasts are at their most crowded and expensive in July and August. Inland, Rick Steves calls Spain “uncomfortably hot and dusty.”
- Seville, Córdoba and Madrid are the hard stops in the heat
- G Adventures warns most European hotels lack room air-conditioning (a fan is usually provided)
- Lisbon’s June festivals peak on June 13; Porto’s St. John’s Night is June 23–24
Fall
The second good window. Portugal’s October is “nearly as good” as summer with fewer people, by Rick Steves’ account.
- Most 2027 coach programs run into October
- The Algarve is past its packed July and August
- A good month for the Douro and the coast without the summer crowds
Winter
Winters can be bitter cold in Spain’s interior and rainy on the coast. Expect shorter hours and more lunch closures from November to March.
- Fewer tour departures; check your operator’s calendar
- Plan sightseeing around lunch closures
- The quiet season, if you dress for it
Our one scheduling warning
Inland Andalusia in July and August is the mistake we’d steer you away from. If summer is your only window, pick a tour weighted to Portugal or the north coast, not one that sleeps in Seville.
Your passport, EES fingerprints and an ETIAS that isn’t here yet
Two acronyms, one of them real today, and a passport rule that catches people with old books. The status as of late October 2026.
Spain and Portugal are both in the Schengen Area. You don’t need a visa for up to 90 days in any 180.
Check the passport first. Spain’s consulate in Washington wants it valid for three months after you leave the Schengen Area and issued within the last ten years. The State Department’s Portugal page adds two blank pages.
The Entry/Exit System is live. It has replaced passport stamps since April 10, 2026, and records your entries and exits plus a facial image and fingerprints.
Summer 2026 showed what that means. Airlines’ trade body IATA warned in June of passport waits of up to six hours at the worst crossings.
ETIAS isn’t live. The EU dropped its “last quarter of 2026” target in July, and as of October 19 no start date had been set.
The State Department rates Spain Level 2, “exercise increased caution,” in an advisory dated August 1, 2026 (its Ceuta enclave is Level 3). Portugal is Level 1, the lowest.
ETIAS, when it comes
An online authorization, not a visa: €20 for travelers aged 18 to 70, valid for three years or until your passport expires. The EU says it will announce the start several months ahead, then allow a six-month period where it’s optional.
What to do now
Nothing to buy yet. Ignore any website selling ETIAS “applications” today. Do pad your arrival day: a tour’s welcome dinner won’t wait for a passport line.
Fifteen tours, from 45-seat coaches to groups of 12
Almost every big operator sells Iberia. They split cleanly by group size and price, so start with the size of group you can stand.
| Tour (2027) | Operator | Days | From | Group | Route |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spanish Experience (Saver) | Trafalgar | 9 | $1,625 | Avg 45 | Madrid, Seville, Granada, Valencia, Barcelona |
| Picturesque Portugal (Saver) | Trafalgar | 7 | $1,375 | Avg 45 | Lisbon to Porto |
| Spanish Wonder | Trafalgar | 9 | $2,168 | Avg 45 | Madrid, Andalusia, Valencia, Barcelona |
| The Best of Spain & Portugal | Cosmos | 13 | $2,899 | Coach | Madrid, Andalusia, Lisbon, Porto |
| The Best of Spain | Globus | 9 | $2,629* | Avg 36 | Spain loop |
| Journey Through Spain | Collette | 10 | $4,599* | Classic avg 37 | Madrid to Barcelona |
| Sunny Portugal | Collette | 9 | $2,299* | Classic avg 37 | Portugal |
| Best of Spain | Rick Steves | 14 | $5,495 + air | 24–28 | Barcelona, Sevilla and more |
| Best of Portugal | Rick Steves | 13 | $4,795 + air | 24–28 | Porto, Douro, Algarve, Lisbon |

| A Week In… Spain | Tauck | 8 | $6,690 | Small Group avg 24 | Barcelona, Andalusia, Madrid |
From-prices are per person, sharing a room, land only, from each operator’s own page unless marked. * marks a price from an agency listing of 2027 departures, because the operator’s page didn’t show one. ~ marks an Intrepid price that isn’t tied to a year. Rick Steves prices exclude airfare, like everyone else’s.
Three details split these tours more than the logo does. The first is the Alhambra: Cosmos warns that entry to the Nasrid Palaces “is not guaranteed,” while Tauck sells a guided visit as part of the fare.
The second is Portugal. Plenty of “Spain and Portugal” tours give Lisbon two nights and skip the Douro; Rick Steves and Tauck build Portugal in properly.
The third is the tier. For 2027 Trafalgar sells three: Saver (the old Costsaver range, such as Spanish Experience and Picturesque Portugal), Classic, and Premium (the old Insight range, such as the 15-day Small Group).
Matcher
Which Iberia tour fits you?
Four taps. We match your answers against the real 2027 tours in the table.
Which Iberia tour for which traveler
The same Seville can be a 45-seat coach day or a walk with 11 other people. Find yourself in the tabs, then go back to the table.
First-timers
A classic coach loop covers the famous names with the least planning. Trafalgar’s Spanish Wonder and Cosmos’s 13-day Best of Spain & Portugal are the two we’d price first.
- Check that the Alhambra is included, and whether the Nasrid Palaces are
- Count the nights in Portugal if you want both countries
- Arrive a day early
Grand hotels, few bills
Tauck’s 14-day Spain and Portugal sleeps at the Ritz in Lisbon and the Alfonso XIII in Seville, with a guided Alhambra and Prado in the fare.
- Tauck A Week In… Spain flies you from Barcelona to Málaga rather than driving
- Small Group departures average 24 guests
- Trafalgar’s Premium Small Group is the step down in price
Lowest fare
Trafalgar’s Saver tier and Cosmos are the budget end. Spanish Experience includes 3 dinners and uses 3-star hotels.
- Budget for the dinners and optional excursions that aren’t included
- Sale prices move often; ask for the current figure
- Expect about 45 guests on the coach
Traveling alone
Trafalgar matches solo travelers with a same-gender roommate at the twin-share price on nearly all its solo tours. G Adventures doesn’t charge a single supplement on most trips. Rick Steves charges $780 for a private room on Best of Portugal.
- Cosmos waives the single supplement on select 2027 Europe tours
- Ask about a room share before you pay a supplement
- G Adventures says it’s not uncommon for half a group to be solo
Older travelers and lighter walking
Tauck rates its Spain and Portugal tour 3 for activity: most days involve about 2 to 3.5 miles of walking, with frequent stairs and cobblestones.
- Fewer hotel changes means fewer packing mornings; count them
- Avoid July and August inland if heat is a concern
- If you use a wheelchair or can’t manage stairs, ask us before the deposit
Small groups, local transport
Intrepid’s Best of Spain and G Adventures’ Best of Spain & Portugal run small groups with more free time and fewer included meals.
- G Adventures rates its trip 2 for physical demand
- Ask whether porterage is included
- Intrepid and G Adventures both require travel insurance
Traveling with kids
The tours in our table are adult itineraries. Family departures are a separate product with their own minimum ages and child pricing, and we’ll compare them for you.
- Late dinners are hard on young children; check which nights are included
- Summer is school-holiday season and the hottest inland
- A self-guided trip can suit a family better
What a day in Iberia costs, before and after the extras
The spread is roughly five to one. Most of the gap is group size and hotel location, not the sights, which are largely the same.
From-prices divided by days, before flights. Highlighted bars include every guide and driver tip; the others don’t. Sale prices can cut these: Cosmos showed $2,174 on a March 2027 date.
Price-per-day math
Line up two Iberia tours on the same scale
Divide each from-price by its days. Our starting figure is the Cosmos tour; change it, then add the tour you’re weighing it against.
Add tips if they aren’t included (they are on Rick Steves), plus the dinners you’ll buy yourself. A cheap tour with three included dinners can cost more than it looks.
The fare is the start. Four extras turn it into the real number.
Tips come first, unless you’re on Rick Steves. Trafalgar suggests $5–7 a day for the Travel Director and $3–5 for the driver, so roughly $70–110 per person on a nine-day trip.
Then the dinners you buy yourself, and any optional excursions. Spanish Experience includes 3 dinners in 9 days.
City taxes are the quiet one. Which? counted about €10–15 a person a night in Barcelona after the April 2026 increase, €4 in Lisbon (capped at €28) and €3 in Porto. Ask whether your fare includes them.
Flights and insurance
Flights to Madrid, Barcelona or Lisbon sit on top of every price here. So does insurance: Intrepid and G Adventures require it, and Tauck sells its own Guest Protection, $599 on this trip. Our booking-window guide covers when to buy it.
Nine days for Spain, two weeks for both
The operators have done this math for you. Their tour lengths cluster around three answers.
| If you have | You can do | A real 2027 example |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | Portugal, Lisbon to Porto, or one region of Spain | Trafalgar Picturesque Portugal (7); Intrepid Highlights of Andalusia (7) |
| 8–9 days | A first loop of Spain: Madrid, Andalusia, Barcelona | Trafalgar Spanish Wonder (9); Globus The Best of Spain (9); Tauck A Week In… Spain (8) |
| 13–15 days | Both countries without living on the coach | Cosmos (13); Rick Steves Best of Portugal (13); G Adventures (14); Tauck (14); Trafalgar Small Group (15); Intrepid Best of Spain (15, Spain only) |
| 3 weeks | Both countries in depth, Douro and Algarve included | Intrepid Classic Spain and Portugal (22) |
Nine days covers Spain, not Iberia. A nine-day “Spain and Portugal” tour exists (Globus sells one), and it works only if you’re happy with a taste of Lisbon.
Add a night in Madrid or Lisbon before the tour starts. Jet lag and the new border checks both argue for it.
A day in the Douro, and dinner at nine
You’re following two clocks on an Iberia tour: the coach’s and the country’s. One real day shows the first; Turespaña explains the second.
Porto to the Douro
About three hours by bus from Porto into wine country, on day 3 of Rick Steves’ Best of Portugal.
A quinta lunch
A vineyard tour, a port-wine tasting and lunch at a historic family estate.
A night in the valley
The group sleeps in the Douro Valley, the tour’s only night there.
On to Coimbra
About four hours by bus, then the university and its 18th-century library.
Day 3 and 4 of Rick Steves’ Best of Portugal in 13 Days (2027). Times aren’t published beyond travel durations.
Spain runs on a later clock. Turespaña, the national tourist office, says restaurants usually serve lunch from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and dinner from 8:00 to 11:30 pm.
Shops sometimes close from 2:00 to 5:00 pm, especially in summer. Plan your free afternoon around it.
Most Iberia tours include only some dinners: 4 of 8 nights on Spanish Wonder, about half on Rick Steves, 2 in 14 days on G Adventures. On free nights, eat a late-afternoon snack the way locals do rather than hunting for a 6:00 pm table.
Tipping is light in restaurants. Afar’s July 2026 guide says to check for “servicio incluido” and leave 5–10% only at nicer places.
Tour tips are separate, and they follow the operator. Trafalgar suggests $5–7 a day for the Travel Director and $3–5 for the driver; G Adventures suggests €30–40 a week for its CEO; Rick Steves includes every tip.
Getting there: open jaws and a night in Madrid
The tour starts when you land, not when the coach leaves. These are the travel decisions that sit outside the fare.
Most of these tours start in one city and end in another. Spanish Wonder runs Madrid to Barcelona; G Adventures runs Lisbon to Barcelona; Rick Steves’ Portugal tour runs Porto to Lisbon.
Book an open-jaw ticket to match: into the start city, home from the end city. It saves a backtrack to the start city.
Fly in a day early. Your first EES entry takes longer, and Rick Steves’ Portugal tour meets at 3:00 pm on day 1, with no wiggle room for a late flight.
Spain is six hours ahead of New York. Portugal runs an hour behind Spain, so five.
Both countries use the euro. Carry some for tips and small cafés, and ask your bank about foreign-transaction fees before you go.
Pre- and post-tour nights
Ask your operator for extra nights at the start or end hotel. We price them alongside the tour, so you can compare them with booking on your own.
Adding a cruise
Barcelona and Lisbon are big cruise ports, so a land tour pairs naturally with a Mediterranean sailing. See our Mediterranean cruise guide, the Barcelona and Lisbon port guides.
How far ahead to book
Final payment falls about 60 to 90 days out on most of these operators: 90 for Trafalgar, 60 for Rick Steves and G Adventures. Spring departures are the ones we’d book first. Our booking-window guide lays out each operator’s dates.
Book a tour, or go on your own?
Book a tour if
- You want Andalusia’s big three, Seville, Córdoba and Granada, without driving between them
- You’re traveling in spring or fall
- You’re fine with dinner at 9:00 on your free nights
- You’d rather have the Alhambra booked for you than chase timed tickets
Look elsewhere if
- You can only go in July or August and the tour sleeps inland
- You want three weeks in Portugal alone; a self-guided trip suits that better
- You need every dinner included; few Iberia tours do that
- Big coaches bother you and your budget stops near $250 a day
Our take
Iberia is good touring country: long distances between the big sights, timed entries at the Alhambra, and trains you’d otherwise book yourself.
Choose the month first, then the group size. A spring Cosmos coach and a spring Rick Steves group will see much the same places; the difference is 45 people against 28, and tips included or not.
If Portugal matters to you, count its nights before you book. Look for at least four.

What Iberia first-timers ask us
Do Americans need ETIAS for Spain or Portugal in 2027?
Not yet. As of October 2026 ETIAS isn’t operating and the EU hasn’t set a start date. It has said it will announce one several months ahead, and the rules allow a six-month optional period after launch. When it starts it will cost €20 and last three years.
What passport do I need for Spain and Portugal?
A US passport valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen Area, issued within the previous ten years. Portugal’s State Department page also asks for two blank pages. No visa is needed for stays of up to 90 days in any 180.
What is the EES?
The EU’s Entry/Exit System. It replaced passport stamps and has been fully running since April 10, 2026. On your first entry you give fingerprints and a facial image at the border, so allow extra time at passport control.
What is the best month for a Spain and Portugal tour?
Spring and fall. Rick Steves calls them the best mix of weather, crowds and long days for both countries. Inland Spain is very hot in July and August, and the coasts are at their most crowded and expensive then.
How many days do I need for Spain and Portugal?
About 9 days for a first loop of Spain, 7 for a Lisbon-to-Porto trip, and 13 to 15 days to do both countries without rushing. Those are the lengths the major operators build their 2027 tours around.
How much does a Spain and Portugal tour cost?
On the 2027 prices we checked, from about $180 a day on Trafalgar’s Spanish Experience to roughly $840 a day on Tauck’s A Week In… Spain, per person, sharing, before flights. Add tips, the dinners that aren’t included and city taxes.
Are dinners included on Spain tours?
Some, rarely all. Trafalgar’s Spanish Wonder includes 4 dinners in 9 days, Rick Steves includes about half, and G Adventures’ 14-day Best of Spain & Portugal includes 2. Spanish restaurants usually serve dinner from 8:00 pm, so plan for late meals on your free nights.
Do you tip in Spain?
Lightly in restaurants: check the bill for “servicio incluido,” and leave around 5–10% only at nicer places. On a tour, the guide and driver tips follow the operator’s guidance, such as Trafalgar’s $5–7 a day for the Travel Director. Rick Steves includes all tips.
