What a Greece tour looks like, from Athens to Santorini
Prices on this page are from-prices in US dollars per person sharing, before flights, from the operators’ own pages unless we label a reseller listing. Here is one real island route, start to finish.
- Athens1 nightArrive any time; an evening welcome meeting with your leader.
- Tinos3 nightsFerry out from Athens, then a six-hour guided tour of Dio Choria, Volax and Pyrgos with lunch.
- Mykonosday tripFerry over for the windmills and free time, back to Tinos by evening.
- Naxos2 nightsA leader-led orientation, the Temple of Apollo, and a free day for the castle or a Mount Zas hike.
- Santorini1 nightA caldera walk of just under 11 km from Fira to Oia on the last full day.
From $2,349 on the May 7, 2027 departure; May 14 and 21 were listed at $2,479. Stops and inclusions from G Adventures’ day-by-day itinerary.
Mainland or islands: two different trips
Greek tours split cleanly in two. Decide which half you came for before you look at a single price.
You’re choosing between two trips that share a flag. The mainland loop is a history tour: Globus’s Classical Greece runs Athens, Olympia, Delphi and Meteora in eight days.
It moves fast. Trafalgar’s Best of Greece spends three nights in Athens, then one night each in Nafplion, Olympia, Delphi and Kalambaka.
Island tours trade ruins for harbors, and the coach for a ferry. On G Adventures’ Highlights of the Greek Islands, transport is listed as “ferry and walking.”
Most first-timers want both. That’s what the cruise combos and the 14- to 16-day tours are for, and it’s where your budget gets tested.
How island hopping actually works
If you’ve only toured by coach, a ferry day feels different. This is a real one.
On most small-group island tours the group rides the public ferries with everyone else. Intrepid’s Athens to Santorini trip notes say the boats are large car ferries, usually without reserved seats.
That shapes what you pack. G Adventures warns that some two-story island hotels have no elevator, and that the Tinos hotel is a 15-minute walk from the ferry with your luggage.
A bag you can roll over cobbles and lift up a staircase beats a big suitcase.
Prefer to sail? Contiki runs a Greece sailing trip in groups of 8, G Adventures sells Sailing Greece on a 56-foot yacht, and Intrepid lists several Cyclades sailing trips.
Bigger coach operators lean on cruise ships instead; see the next section.
Ferry from Naxos to Santorini
Day 7 of G Adventures’ Highlights of the Greek Islands. Crossing times aren’t published; the trip notes call all travel times approximate.
Walk the caldera, Fira to Oia
A leader-led walk of just under 11 km along the cliff-top villages.
Optional group dinner
The last night of the trip. The fare includes 7 breakfasts and 1 lunch in 8 days, so dinners are yours.
Pairing a land tour with a cruise
Want ruins and islands without packing for ferries? Most coach operators solve it with a ship.
| Combo | Days | From | Per day | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Globus Classical Greece (land only) | 8 | $2,749 | ~$344 | globusjourneys.com, Jun 28 2027 |

| Cosmos Greece & Aegean Islands Cruise | 15 | $4,699 | ~$313 | reseller, 2027 |
Globus lists the cruise and island versions from $4,329 to $5,869 for 2027 departures without naming the dates; the land-only fare is for June 28, 2027. Trafalgar offers 3-, 4- and 7-night Aegean cruise extensions on its Best of Greece; ask for the combined price.
The pattern is useful. On Globus, adding the islands by ship or by ferry barely moves the cost per day, about $345 to $367 against $344 for land alone.
You’re mostly buying more days, not a pricier kind of day.
Already booked a Mediterranean cruise from Piraeus? Then you need a land tour, not a combo.
Add Globus’s or Trafalgar’s 8-day loop before or after the ship, and read our Piraeus cruise port guide for the transfer.
A fee to know about if you add a ship
Since July 1, 2025, Greece has charged cruise passengers a per-port fee: €20 on Santorini and Mykonos from June to September, €12 in April, May and October, and €4 from November to March. Other Greek ports charge €5, €3 and €1. Ask whether your cruise fare includes it.
When to go, and how hot it gets
You’re weighing heat, crowds and which tours are even running. Greece’s own fee calendar answers more of that than any brochure.
Spring: the islands open
Greece’s own fee calendars treat April, May and October as the shoulder season, with the cruise fee on Santorini and Mykonos at €12 instead of €20.
- Intrepid’s Athens to Santorini has departures from April 2027; G Adventures’ island trips from May
- Hotel climate fees switch to their higher April-to-October rates
- A good fit for a mainland-plus-islands combo before the heat
Summer: peak prices, peak heat
June 1 to September 30 is the peak band for Greece’s cruise fee. It’s also when heat closes ruins.
- In July 2025 the Culture Ministry closed the Acropolis until 5 p.m., with Athens forecast at 38°C (about 100°F) and up to 42°C elsewhere
- A 2026 visitor guide reports closures from about midday to 5 p.m. when temperatures pass 39°C
- Globus’s lowest listed Classical Greece fare, $2,749, was a June 28, 2027 departure
October: the islands wind down
October returns to shoulder rates on Greece’s calendar, and most small-group island trips run their last departures of the year.
- G Adventures and Intrepid list island departures through October in 2027 and 2028
- Fewer island departures after October on the trips we checked
- A fit for travelers who want the islands without peak-season fees
Winter: mainland only, and cheaper
Greece’s off-season fee band runs November to March. Island tours mostly stop; the mainland loop keeps running.
- Trafalgar’s Best of Greece lists winter departures from November 2026 to March 2027, most at $2,295 to $2,450
- The cruise fee on Santorini and Mykonos drops to €4, and hotel climate fees to €0.50–€4
- Pick the mainland loop; it keeps running through the winter on Trafalgar’s calendar
We don’t quote average temperatures or crowd counts; operators don’t publish them. The tabs use Greece’s own fee seasons, the operators’ departure calendars and reported heat closures.
The Acropolis: timed entry and the midday problem
The Acropolis is the one sight every Greece tour sells. Make sure yours actually gets you in.
Since September 4, 2023, the Acropolis has sold entry by time slot, capped at 20,000 visitors a day. Tickets are sold through the Culture Ministry’s Hellenic Heritage ticket site and app.
A full adult ticket rose from €20 to €30 in 2025, per Kathimerini’s reporting. Morning slots sell out first, so confirm the price and time on the official site.
On a tour, the questions are different. Is the Acropolis an included, ticketed entry, or a view from below? And what time is the slot?
Heat is the reason to ask. In July 2025 the site closed until 5 p.m. for the safety of visitors and staff.
A midday slot in July is exactly the one that gets cancelled.
What to ask your operator
Which day is Athens sightseeing, and what time is the Acropolis slot? If it’s midday in July or August, ask what happens on a heat-closure day: a later slot, a refund, or nothing.
How many days you need
You’re fitting Greece into your vacation days. The operators’ own itineraries give a clear answer.
Lengths from the operators’ 2027 listings. Days include arrival and departure days.
Our rule of thumb
Eight days for one half, about two weeks for both. Squeezing mainland and islands into ten days means ferry days and coach days back to back, with little left over.

What Greece costs per day, and all-in
Greece runs from about $150 to $640 a day. The cheapest numbers come with conditions, so check the age limit before the price.
Our arithmetic on the from-prices above. Inclusions differ: Trafalgar’s Best of Greece includes 4 dinners in 8 days; G Adventures’ island trip includes 1 lunch and no dinners.
Read the cheap end carefully. Contiki’s $150 a day comes with multi-share rooms and an age limit; G Adventures’ $221 is also an 18-to-39 trip.
For a couple in their 50s or 60s, the real floor is the mainland coach loop at about $238 to $344 a day, or a small-group island trip at about $294 to $328.
All-in math
What a Greece tour costs once you land
We filled in Trafalgar’s Best of Greece and the midpoints of Trafalgar’s tip guidance. The meals figure is our starting estimate; change it, and swap in your own quote.
Best of Greece includes 7 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 4 dinners, so about 10 meals are yours. On a G Adventures island trip, use its own tip guidance (€6–€8 a day for the leader) and leave the driver box at zero. Add your flights to the total.

Tipping and the fees nobody mentions
Tips on a Greece tour depend on who you book. Greece’s own fees depend on where you sleep and how you arrive.

| G Adventures tour leader | €6–€8 per person per day (Highlights of the Greek Islands) | Trip page |

Greece’s hotel climate fee
Greece charges a climate resilience fee per night. Under the rates in force since January 2025, April to October costs €2 at 1- and 2-star hotels, €5 at 3-star, €10 at 4-star and €15 at 5-star.
November to March, it’s €0.50 to €4. Ask whether your tour fare includes the fee; any night you add yourself pays it at the hotel.
Customs that shape a tour day
Heat is why an early start matters. Open-air sites like the Acropolis are the ones heat closes, so look for itineraries that put them first thing.
G Adventures’ guidance is about 10% for wait staff and a euro or two for other service. Carry small euro notes and coins for it.
Leave the ruins as you found them. The State Department notes that removing anything from an archaeological site, even a stone, is prohibited.
Passports, flights to Athens, and euros
Getting into Greece is easy on a US passport. Getting home from the last island takes more thought.
Almost every Greece tour starts in Athens (ATH). Island tours often end on Santorini, so price an open-jaw ticket home from there rather than a ferry back.
Fly in a day early. Trafalgar’s Best of Greece includes an arrival transfer on day one; G Adventures says arrive any time before the evening welcome meeting.
Carry your passport or a photo ID at all times; the State Department says so.
Solo, families and slower travelers in Greece
Twin-share pricing is built for couples. These are the better starting points for everyone else.
| If you are… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Traveling solo on the islands | G Adventures Highlights of the Greek Islands | No single supplement if you share with a same-sex roommate; My Own Room from $839 |
| Traveling solo on a coach tour | Trafalgar | Room matching with a same-sex traveler at the twin-share price on nearly all its solo-friendly tours |
| 18 to 35 and solo | Contiki Greek Island Hopping | Multi-share rooms of up to six keep the price near $150 a day |
| A family with kids | Intrepid Greece Family Holiday | 8 days from $2,875 on Intrepid’s US site. Trafalgar also sells a Greek Island Hopper Family version; G Adventures’ minimum age is 12. |
| Older, or slower on your feet | Trafalgar Greek Island Hopper | Three nights each on Mykonos and Santorini, by Trafalgar’s own relaxed-pace description |
| After a small group | Intrepid Athens to Santorini | A cap of 12, public ferries, 8 days from $2,625 |
| After the most comfort | Intrepid Premium Greece in Depth | 16 days, tips included, from $10,270 |
Mobility limits change the choice. G Adventures’ island hotels may have no elevator; Trafalgar’s mainland loop handles your bags but changes hotel every night for four nights.
If stairs and ferry gangways are hard, a cruise combo or a private tour is the easier way to see the islands.
Athens nights, Aegean cruises, and booking windows
Athens before, a ship after, or both. Plan the edges of the tour when you book the middle.
Before and after the tour
An extra night in Athens before you start is cheap insurance against a late flight. Ask your operator to book it; Trafalgar sells extra hotel nights around its tours.
Booking your own? The climate fee applies, by star rating, every night.
Adding a cruise
Most Greek cruises start or end at Piraeus, Athens’ port. See our Piraeus cruise port guide, the Santorini and Mykonos port pages, and Mediterranean cruises.
How far ahead to book
Island trips cap groups at 12 to 16, so a handful of couples can fill a date. For June or September, we’d book about a year out; our booking-window guide compares the operators’ deadlines.
Insurance
Some policy benefits, like pre-existing-condition cover, depend on buying soon after your deposit. Read our insurance purchase-window guide before you pay it.

Your Greece checklist
Ticks aren’t saved. Deposits and cancellation terms are on each operator’s guide below.
Who should tour Greece, and who should go alone
Book a tour if
- You want the mainland ruins: Delphi, Meteora and Olympia are hard to link without a car or a coach
- You want ruins and islands without planning ferries; a Globus cruise combo does it in 12 to 16 days
- You’re 18 to 35 and want the cheapest island trip with company; Contiki is about $150 a day
- You’re traveling solo and want a ready-made group on the islands
Look elsewhere if
- You only want one or two islands and a beach; book the ferries and hotels yourself
- You hate early starts; in summer the open-air sites are best done first thing
- You’re already on a Greek cruise; book a land tour before or after it, not a combo
- You want August on Santorini without crowds; the calendar won’t cooperate
Our take
For most first trips, do the mainland loop on a tour and the islands by ship. Globus’s Classical Greece with a 3- or 4-night Aegean cruise covers both in under two weeks, at about the same cost per day as the land tour alone.
If ferries and a rolling bag don’t bother you, G Adventures and Intrepid run the islands in groups of 16 or fewer.
Either way, avoid a midday Acropolis slot in July. Ask about it before you pay the deposit.

What Greece first-timers ask us
How many days do you need for Greece on a tour?
Eight days covers the classic mainland loop from Athens through Delphi and Meteora; Globus, Trafalgar and Intrepid all sell 8-day versions. Island-only tours run 7 to 11 days. Mainland plus islands takes about 12 to 16 days, such as Globus Classical Greece with a 3- to 7-night Aegean cruise.
Is July or August too hot for a Greece tour?
It can be. During a July 2025 heatwave Greece’s Culture Ministry closed the Acropolis until 5 p.m. for visitor and worker safety, with Athens forecast at 38°C (about 100°F). If heat worries you, look at May, June or late September and October; most island tours we checked run from April or May to October.
Do I need a timed ticket for the Acropolis?
Yes. Since September 2023 the Acropolis has sold entry in timed slots with a cap of 20,000 visitors a day, booked online through the Culture Ministry’s Hellenic Heritage ticket site. A full adult ticket rose to €30 in 2025. If your tour includes the visit, ask what time slot it holds; midday summer slots are the ones heat closures hit.
Do US citizens need a visa or ETIAS for Greece?
No visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in any 180. Greek law requires a passport valid three months beyond your departure; the US Embassy recommends six. The EU’s Entry/Exit System phased in from October 12, 2025 and has run in full since April 10, 2026: fingerprints and a photo at the border, at no charge. ETIAS isn’t live and had no confirmed start date as of late October 2026.
Can I combine a Greece tour with a cruise?
Yes. Globus sells Classical Greece with an Aegean cruise of 3, 4 or 7 nights (12 to 16 days in all, from about $4,329 to $5,869), and Trafalgar offers Aegean cruise extensions on its Best of Greece. Cosmos sells a 15-day Greece & Aegean Islands Cruise from about $4,699 on a reseller listing.
How do island-hopping tours get between islands?
Mostly by public ferry. Intrepid’s Athens to Santorini trip notes say the ferries are large car ferries, usually without reserved seats, and G Adventures lists island-trip transport as ferry and walking. Contiki, G Adventures and Intrepid also sell sailing trips on small boats.
How much should I tip on a Greece tour?
G Adventures suggests €6 to €8 per person per day for its tour leader on Highlights of the Greek Islands, €3 to €5 a day for local guides and about 10% for restaurant staff. Trafalgar suggests $5 to $7 a day for its Travel Director and $3 to $5 for the driver. Intrepid includes tips on Premium trips.
What is Greece’s hotel fee?
Greece charges a climate resilience fee per night. The rates in force since January 2025 run, from April to October, from €2 at 1- and 2-star hotels to €15 at 5-star hotels, and from €0.50 to €4 from November to March. Ask whether your tour fare includes it; nights you add yourself pay it at the hotel.
