Destination guideMorocco2027 tours

Morocco tours split on one question: the Sahara

Fes, Marrakech and the Atlantic coast fit in a week. The dunes at Merzouga add a nine-hour drive each way and a night in a tent. We priced real 2027 tours both ways, from about $111 a day to more than $900.

You’re choosing how much road you’ll trade for the dunes. The city route links Morocco’s old royal capitals in short hops; the desert route crosses the Middle and High Atlas to reach Merzouga, then loops back through the Todra Gorge and Aït Benhaddou.

Short tours that claim both usually do it with very long days. Intrepid’s 8-day Classic Morocco spends its fourth day almost entirely in the vehicle.

Read the camp line, not the brochure photo. Tauck’s Magic of Morocco has a Berber-style dinner at a desert camp outside Marrakech, which is a fine evening but not the Sahara.

Pick desert or no desert before you compare prices. Every other choice on this page follows from it.

03

A night in a Sahara camp, hour by hour

The desert night is the one most travelers remember. It’s also the one with the most variation between operators.

Morning

Fes to the Atlas

Day 4 of Intrepid’s Classic Morocco: breakfast, then about nine hours on the road, with coffee in the mountain town of Ifrane.

Midday

Lunch in Midelt

A stop on the high plains between the Middle and High Atlas.

Afternoon

Camels to the dunes

Drop your bag at camp and ride a camel to the edge of the Sahara for sunset. You can walk alongside instead, or share a 4WD for about 500 dirhams a vehicle.

Evening

Dinner by the fire

Local food, live music and dancing under the stars. Tents, a dining tent and a bathroom tent; power runs on batteries, so charge your phone before you leave Fes.

Camps aren’t all alike

G Adventures says its Morocco camps range from a developed site with a restaurant, toilets and simple showers to basic camps with pop-up tents, portable toilets and no showers. Ask which one your departure uses.

At the top end, A&K puts its Wonders of Morocco group in its own private desert camp. Collette’s Colors of Morocco spends three nights in a Sahara tented camp, reached by 4x4.

Intrepid sells a single room on Classic Morocco, but not for the desert night; you share a tent. If that matters, ask before you pay the deposit.

Pack a warm layer and a headlamp for the camp night, whatever the month.

04

Fes and Marrakech: the medinas, the mosque and the shops

Fes and Marrakech anchor nearly every itinerary. A little preparation goes a long way in both.

Fes el Bali is a walled maze, and tours treat it that way: Intrepid’s group spends a full guided day there, through the Al-Attarine Madrasa, the tanneries and the 18th-century Fondouk Nejjarine. It warns that the medina is easy to get lost in, so stay with the group.

Expect shopping stops. Intrepid says the day includes selected shops and that commissions are paid through its central system; other operators don’t say. You’re never obliged to buy.

Marrakech is the end of most tours. Tauck gives it four nights at the Four Seasons, with a choice of a cooking class, an Essaouira photography tour or a hammam.

What to wear, and what not to photograph

The State Department advises dressing modestly and not photographing palaces, government buildings and other sensitive sites.

At the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Tauck tells women to cover their hair, and provides scarves. Knees and shoulders covered is the safe default for every mosque and medina day.

Ramadan changes the rhythm. On The Go Tours notes that shops and restaurants may close during the day and that the Hassan II Mosque and museums close early, while evenings get livelier.

What to ask your operator

Which entry tickets are in the fare (Volubilis, the Hassan II Mosque, the madrasas and palaces), and how many shopping stops the itinerary includes. Both change what a medina day feels like.

05

When to go: spring and autumn, with Ramadan in the calendar

You’re weighing heat, the desert and the holy month. The operators agree on two windows.

Mar–Maythe recommended window

Spring: the operators’ first pick

On The Go Tours recommends March to May, with Marrakech highs of about 23 to 29°C. The Atlas trekking season opens in March.

  • Trafalgar’s Best of Morocco runs March 2027 departures at about $2,696
  • Ramadan is expected to end around March 8, 2027, so early-March dates fall inside it
  • Gate 1 runs its classic tours year-round in 2027

Temperatures are On The Go Tours’ published ranges for Marrakech and Essaouira, not our own. Ramadan dates depend on the moon sighting and can move by a day.

06

How many days Morocco takes

You’re fitting Morocco into your vacation days. The desert is what stretches the trip.

Tour length by trip type (days)
Cities only, coach (Globus)7
Cities plus Chefchaouen (Trafalgar Saver)8
Cities plus one Sahara night, small group (Intrepid)8
Fes and Marrakech, luxury (Tauck)10
North and Sahara, small group (G Adventures)11
Full loop with the Sahara, coach (Trafalgar)11
Small group with a private camp (A&K)12
Three Sahara nights (Collette)14–15

Lengths from the operators’ 2027 listings. Days include arrival and departure days.

Our rule of thumb

A week for the cities, 10 to 11 days if you want the Sahara without a punishing schedule, and two weeks if you want more than one night in the dunes.

Coach operators: Trafalgar, Globus, Gate 1, Collette

Trafalgar sells both versions: an 8-day Saver tour without the desert and an 11-day Best of Morocco that reaches Merzouga. Gate 1 has the widest range, 11 Morocco tours in 2027.

What Morocco costs per day, and all-in

The cheapest Morocco days cost little more than $100. The spread up to luxury is more than eightfold.

Our arithmetic on the from-prices above. Inclusions differ: Trafalgar’s Best of Morocco includes 20 meals; Intrepid’s Classic Morocco includes 11.

The cheap end is real, with conditions. Gate 1’s land-only fares leave out flights, the Trafalgar Saver date is a summer deal without the desert, and G Adventures’ fare is on sale.

For the Sahara on a full-size coach, the floor is about $146 a day on Gate 1’s Kaleidoscope and about $245 on Trafalgar’s Best of Morocco.

All-in math

What a Morocco tour costs once you land

We filled in Trafalgar’s Best of Morocco at its usual February–March 2027 fare, with the midpoints of Trafalgar’s tip guidance. The meals figure is our starting estimate; change it, and swap in your own quote.

Best of Morocco includes 10 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 7 dinners, so about 10 meals are yours. The $150 in the extras box is our starting estimate for small tips to porters and local guides plus a few tickets; change it. On G Adventures, use its own figures: about $8 to $11 a day for the leader, $230 to $300 for meals not included, and leave the driver box at zero. Add your flights to the total.

Adding Spain or Portugal, or a cruise

Morocco sits a ferry ride from Spain, and some tours use that. Here are the combinations we found.

One tour, two continents

Gate 1 sells two 16-day combinations for 2027: Tastes of Northern Morocco & Southern Spain from $2,999 and Tastes of Portugal & Northern Morocco from $3,249, land only.

Intrepid’s Premium Spain & Morocco runs 19 days from Madrid to Marrakesh, at about $11,595 on a reseller listing. G Adventures’ Explore Morocco starts in Tangier, a short hop from southern Spain.

Our Spain and Portugal tour guide covers the Iberian half.

Before or after a cruise

Already sailing the western Mediterranean? A Morocco tour can sit before or after it; see our Mediterranean cruises guide for itineraries and ports, and our Barcelona and Lisbon port guides for the cities you’d connect through.

Plan it as two trips with one flight plan. We’ll check whether the dates line up before you commit to either.

Cash, cards and the dirham

Morocco’s currency is the dirham, and you can’t take it out of the country. Keep your exchange receipts: the State Department says you’ll need one to change dirhams back to dollars.

G Adventures says Visa is the most accepted card, mainly for larger purchases, and that card access isn’t guaranteed. It suggests a mix of cash and cards and about $200 extra for emergencies.

Optional extras, in dirhams

Intrepid publishes its optional prices: a 4WD to the dunes instead of a camel, about 500 dirhams a vehicle; a Todra Gorge hike, 350; a Marrakech cooking class, 640; a balloon ride, 1,999.

Morocco’s hotel tourist tax and monument ticket prices aren’t on any official page we could check. Ask whether nights you add yourself include the tax.

12

Passports, the advisory, flights to Casablanca and the clock

Morocco is visa-free on a US passport. The details that trip people up are money and the advisory.

Passport6 months on arrivalThe State Department’s figure, with one blank page for the stamp.

FlightsCasablanca (CMN)Royal Air Maroc flies to New York, Washington and Miami, and added Los Angeles from June 7, 2026.
Local lawsRead before you goSame-sex relations are illegal in Morocco, the State Department says; proselytizing is prohibited.

The advisory says “some areas have increased risk” without naming them. Read it in full on travel.state.gov, enroll in STEP, and ask your operator how it plans around the guidance.

Most tours start in Casablanca and end in Marrakech, so book an open-jaw ticket: into Casablanca, home from Marrakech. Trafalgar’s Best of Morocco loops back to Casablanca; G Adventures starts in Tangier.

Fly in a day early. Intrepid’s welcome meeting is at 6 p.m. on day one, and Tauck sells an Arrive Early option in Rabat.

Thinking of driving yourself? The State Department calls local driving practices “very poor” and advises avoiding night driving.

Mobility limits change the choice. Tauck says wheelchairs and scooters can’t be accommodated, and warns of stairs, cobblestones and 90 minutes or more of standing.

G Adventures says you’ll carry your bag for up to 15 to 20 minutes, up and down stairs. If either is a problem, a private tour sets the pace for you.

14

Extra nights, booking windows and insurance

A spare night at each end makes the long drives easier to absorb. Plan the edges when you book the middle.

Before and after the tour

Intrepid suggests an extra night or two in Marrakech for a hammam or day trips. Tauck sells an Arrive Early night in Rabat.

Ending in Marrakech? A free day there is easy to fill: the medina, the gardens, the Atlas foothills.

How far ahead to book

Spring and autumn small groups fill first. For April or October, we’d book about nine months to a year out; our booking-window guide compares the operators’ deadlines.

Deposits

Trafalgar’s deposit starts at $200; Collette’s is $349 land only; Tauck’s is $600, with final payment 90 days out.

Insurance windows

Tauck’s Guest Protection, $799 on this tour, must be bought within 10 days of your deposit. Other plans tie some benefits to buying soon after you pay; read our purchase-window guide first.

Ticks aren’t saved. Deposits and cancellation terms are on each operator’s guide below.

16

Who should tour Morocco, and who should go another way

Book a tour if

  • You want the Sahara; the drive is long and a tour handles it
  • You’d rather not haggle for a car and driver in a new language
  • You want the medinas with a guide who knows the way out
  • You’re traveling solo and want a group, and Intrepid’s $99 supplement suits you

Look elsewhere if

  • You need wheelchair access; Tauck says it can’t accommodate one
  • You only want Marrakech; a riad and a day trip will do
  • You can only travel in July or August and want the desert
  • The advisory or local laws rule it out for you; Egypt or Jordan may suit better

Our take

For a first trip, take a 10- to 11-day tour with at least one Sahara night: Trafalgar’s Best of Morocco on a coach, or G Adventures’ Explore Morocco in a small group. Eight-day versions work, if you accept a nine-hour driving day.

If the desert doesn’t pull you, a week on Globus or Trafalgar Saver covers Fes and Marrakech for about $111 to $194 a day.

Either way, ask about the camp before you pay the deposit.

18

What Morocco first-timers ask us

How many days do you need for Morocco on a tour?

About 10 to 11 days covers the imperial cities and the Sahara: Trafalgar’s Best of Morocco runs 11 days and G Adventures’ Explore Morocco runs 11. Intrepid squeezes the desert into 8 days with long drives. A week covers the cities only, like Globus’s 7-day Moroccan Escape or Trafalgar’s 8-day Highlights of Morocco.

Do Morocco tours include a night in the Sahara?

Some do, some don’t. Intrepid’s Classic Morocco spends one night in a desert camp near Merzouga, G Adventures’ Explore Morocco spends two, and Collette’s Colors of Morocco spends three. Trafalgar’s Best of Morocco reaches Merzouga. The 7- and 8-day city tours from Globus and Trafalgar don’t go to the desert, and Tauck’s desert-camp dinner is outside Marrakech, not in the Sahara.

Is Morocco safe for a guided tour?

The US State Department rates Morocco Level 2, “exercise increased caution,” because of the risk of terrorism; it reissued the advisory on September 4, 2026 without changing the level. Read the full advisory before you book, enroll in STEP, and ask your operator how it plans around the guidance.

Do US citizens need a visa for Morocco?

No visa for stays under 90 days. The State Department says your passport should have at least six months of validity on arrival and one blank page for the entry stamp, and recommends carrying a copy of your passport.

What is the best time of year for a Morocco tour?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September and October), according to On The Go Tours’ Morocco guidance. It advises avoiding the Sahara from June to August, when Marrakech highs reach about 33 to 38°C. Winter is mild by day in Marrakech but cool and wet in the north. Ramadan is expected to run about February 8 to March 8, 2027.

How much should I tip on a Morocco tour?

G Adventures suggests about $8 to $11 per person per day for its leader and collects a group tipping kitty on day one. Trafalgar suggests $5 to $7 a day for its Travel Director and $3 to $5 for the driver. Intrepid says Morocco has a tipping culture and you’ll be expected to tip small amounts for most services, so carry small dirham notes.

Can I bring Moroccan dirhams home or exchange them back?

You can’t take dirhams out of Morocco. The State Department says you can convert them back to dollars before you leave only with the bank or exchange receipt showing you changed dollars in Morocco, so keep your receipts and spend down your cash on the last day.
