Egypt runs on the Nile, and on an early alarm

Almost every Egypt tour is Cairo at both ends and three to five nights on the river between Luxor and Aswan. What changes is the boat, the month and how much of the heat you sleep through.

Cool season, shoulder months, and the hot quiet one

Egypt barely rains. The calendar is about heat and crowds, and the two run in opposite directions.

Dec–Febthe best weather and the biggest crowds

Winter

Trafalgar Premium calls winter the best time overall: comfortable days and cool nights. It’s also when everyone else goes.

  • Luxor averages about 73°F in January and lows near 45°F
  • Aswan is its winter pick
  • Pack a sweater for evenings on deck

Trafalgar Premium’s (Insight’s) published averages. Aswan runs within a few degrees; Cairo is about 9–10°F cooler in summer (97°F in July).

Read the chart as a schedule, not a warning. Tours start the temples early because by noon the stone is hot, and in summer that matters more.

If you’re flexible, aim for the shoulder months on either side of winter. Book June to August only if you’re happy to be at Karnak before breakfast.

The Grand Egyptian Museum is open

If you last read about Egypt a few years ago, update the Cairo part of the picture.

The museum by the Giza pyramids was inaugurated on November 1, 2025 and opened to the public on November 4.

Tours now build their Cairo days around it. Trafalgar’s Best of Egypt, Globus’s Egypt with Nile Cruise and both G Adventures trips we checked include a visit.

Going on your own? From November 1, 2026 the foreign adult ticket is EGP 1,830, up from 1,570, and foreign students and children pay EGP 920, per Egyptian press.

Buy only on the official site, visit-gem.com. Tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable.

On a tour

Ask whether the museum is a guided visit or a drop-off with free time, and how long you get. It’s a big building; half a day goes fast.

Ship, dahabiya, or felucca and a sleeper train

Every Egypt tour puts you on the Nile somehow. How you’re on it shapes the price, the pace and the crowd at the dock.

Most tours land somewhere in the left column. The ship days are temple days: Karnak and Luxor, then Edfu and Kom Ombo on the way to Aswan.

A dahabiya is the slower version. You trade a bigger ship’s pool and lounges for a quiet deck and stops the big ships skip.

Want the river to be the trip itself? Viking, AmaWaterways, Uniworld and Avalon sell full Nile cruise-tours with Cairo hotel nights at each end.

Our Nile river cruise guide compares them, and Luxor, Aswan and Cairo have their own guides.

Abu Simbel sits south of Aswan, beyond where the ships go.

Trafalgar, Tauck and G’s Geluxe trip include it (Tauck by private charter); on G’s Best of Egypt it’s an optional extra. Check that line before you compare fares.

06

Pyramids, museum and the night train south

This is day 2 of G Adventures’ Best of Egypt, from its trip page. It’s a long one, and it ends on a train.

Morning

Giza

The Great Pyramid and the Sphinx with your leader, before the heat builds.

Midday

The Grand Egyptian Museum

Straight on to the museum next door to the plateau.

Evening

Board the overnight train to Aswan. You wake up in Aswan.

In Ramadan

A tighter clock

G says the pyramids and museums close at 3 p.m. then, so the day runs pyramids 9–11, museums 11:30–2:30, lunch at 3.

That last row is the only part with published times. If your dates fall in Ramadan, ask your operator how it reshapes the days.

From-prices per person, sharing a room, before international flights unless noted, as shown on each operator’s US page (O.A.T.: its press release) in October 2026. G Adventures and Nat Geo figures are regular prices; both were running sales of up to 25% when we checked. Prices move: confirm on your date.

The adventure brands own the bottom of the market and most of the choice. G Adventures alone runs at least six Egypt trips from an 18-to-39 version to its Nat Geo Signature, and Intrepid adds a six-day Simply Egypt for 2027.

The classic coach brands sell the ship version with flights handled. Globus includes internal air on all three trips above; Trafalgar’s Premium tier (formerly Insight) has run women-only Egypt departures.

At the top, Tauck uses Oberoi’s small ships and the Mena House by the pyramids.

Abercrombie & Kent runs four of its own A&K Sanctuary riverboats on the Nile, with a fifth, Nile Seray, due at the end of 2026; ask us for its 2027 Egypt fares. Cosmos also sells Egypt, and we’ll price its current departures on request.

From-price divided by days, per person, twin share, before international flights except O.A.T. (includes air). Highlighted: the two luxury picks.

The spread is about ninefold. Under $210 a day you’re on a G Adventures or Contiki trip; around $300 buys a Globus or Trafalgar cruise tour with flights inside Egypt; $800 and up is Nat Geo Signature and Tauck.

Then add what the fare leaves out. On G’s Best of Egypt that’s the tipping kitty, meals beyond 12 included ones, optionals such as Memphis and Sakkara (from $70) and Abu Simbel.

G also asks you to carry a $200 emergency fund.

Budget for the visa (about $30), your leader’s tip and international flights. Entrance fees and optionals on G trips must be paid by card, per a recent ministry change.

Visa, passport and the State Department

The paperwork is short. The two things that catch people are the visa website and the six-month passport rule.

You need a visa. The State Department says US citizens can buy one on arrival or apply in advance for an e-visa on Egypt’s official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg, and warns that other sites charge up to double.

Fees have moved.

The State Department lists $36 by card at Cairo airport and $30 in exact cash elsewhere. Trade press reported the portal’s single-entry e-visa at $30 in April 2026, after on-arrival fees rose on March 1.

Some tours pay it for you: Tauck covers it for US citizens.

Your passport needs six months of validity and a blank page. Tauck asks for six months beyond the end of the trip.

Money: the currency is the Egyptian pound (EGP).

Carrying more than $10,000 in or out is illegal and the excess can be seized.

Carry small US bills for tips; G Adventures prefers the kitty in dollars.

Time: Egypt runs about seven hours ahead of the US East Coast for most of the year. Confirm for your dates, since both countries change their clocks.

Flying in: tours start and end in Cairo. Ask us to price the routing from Florida or Texas, and arrive the day before.

State Department: Level 2

Egypt’s advisory is Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” issued July 15, 2025. Do Not Travel areas: North and Middle Sinai and the border areas, plus the Western Desert unless you go with a licensed tour company. For South Sinai and the Red Sea it says be cautious and check the news, and it notes fatal accidents on tourist boats, including overnight dive trips. Most Nile cruise boats have no doctor; hospitals in Luxor and Aswan are good.

Baksheesh, tipping and what to wear

Tips in Egypt are small and frequent. Carry small bills and the operator’s figures, and you won’t think twice.

Baksheesh is the local word for a tip, and you’ll hear it. Operators publish their own figures, so follow those, not a rule of thumb.

G Adventures’ Best of Egypt collects a group kitty of about $36.50 to $38.50 per person for the whole trip, then suggests $6 to $9 a day for your leader. Its Geluxe trip includes tips for included meals and activities and suggests $10 to $15 a day for the leader.

Nat Geo Signature includes tips for activities, meals and porterage.

Trafalgar’s Best of Egypt includes porterage, restaurant and hotel tips; Trafalgar’s general guidance for Travel Directors is $5 to $7 a day and $3 to $5 for drivers.

Tauck’s Egypt page doesn’t address tips, so ask.

On your own at a restaurant, G says a 10% tip is expected in the Middle East.

For mosques and religious sites, G Adventures says to dress modestly, cover your shoulders and skip short shorts and skirts.

Tauck says to cover knees and shoulders at some monuments and that long pants may be required.

Leave drones and binoculars at home: Tauck warns they may be confiscated.

Pack for the dress code

Loose cotton layers that cover shoulders and knees work at every stop, from a Cairo mosque to a temple at noon. Add broken-in walking shoes; Tauck rules out open toes and flip-flops.

Who a guided Egypt tour suits

Book it if

  • You want temples explained by an Egyptologist, not a sign
  • You want flights, the Nile boat and Abu Simbel in one booking
  • You’re traveling solo; G’s Solo-ish trip and O.A.T.’s free single rooms are built for it
  • You’re a family with kids 7 and up; Nat Geo’s Family Journey is made for that
  • You’d like a Nile trip with more land days than a river cruise gives you

Look elsewhere if

  • You can only travel in July or August and hate early starts
  • You need wheelchair access; Tauck, for one, can’t accommodate wheelchairs or scooters
  • You want to linger; the tours we checked move every one to four nights
  • You want the river and the ship to be the point; look at a Nile river cruise instead
  • Your trip centers on Sinai or the Western Desert; check the advisory first

Our take

Egypt is a sequence, not a menu: Cairo, the Nile, Aswan, Cairo again. That makes it easy to tour and easy to compare.

Choose the boat first, then the month.

If budget leads, G Adventures or Contiki. If you want the ship and the flights handled, Globus or Trafalgar at about $300 a day. If the hotels matter as much as the temples, Nat Geo Signature or Tauck.

Then ask two questions: is Abu Simbel included, and are the flights? The answers move the price more than the brochure does.

16

What Egypt first-timers ask us

Do US citizens need a visa for Egypt?

Yes. The State Department says a visa is required, your passport must be valid for six months and needs a blank page. You can buy a single-entry tourist e-visa before you fly on the official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg, or a 30-day visa on arrival. The State Department lists $36 by card at Cairo airport and $30 in exact cash at other entry points; the portal’s single-entry e-visa was about $30 in April 2026. Some tours, Tauck’s among them, pay for it.

Is Egypt safe to visit?

The State Department rates Egypt Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” in an advisory issued July 15, 2025. Its Do Not Travel areas are North and Middle Sinai and the border areas; the Western Desert is on that list unless you go with a licensed tour company. Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and the Nile aren’t among the Level 4 areas. It asks visitors to South Sinai and the Red Sea to stay cautious and check the news.

When is the best time to visit Egypt?

October to April, per Trafalgar Premium’s guidance, with November to February the busiest. Luxor averages about 73°F in January and 106°F from June to August. Summer is the quietest and cheapest time, and sightseeing then starts as early as 6 a.m.

Is the Grand Egyptian Museum open?

Yes. It was inaugurated on November 1, 2025 and opened to the public on November 4, 2025. From November 1, 2026 the foreign adult ticket is EGP 1,830 (it was 1,570), per Egyptian press. Book only on the official site, visit-gem.com. Most of the 2027 tours on this page include a visit.

Nile cruise ship or dahabiya?

A cruise ship is the standard: three or four nights between Luxor and Aswan on most tours. A dahabiya is a small sailing boat with no engine; G Adventures’ Geluxe trip spends five nights on one with 10 cabins, docking away from the big ships. It’s slower and quieter, and it costs more per day.

Is Abu Simbel included?

It depends on the tour. Trafalgar’s Best of Egypt, G Adventures’ Geluxe trip and Tauck’s Jewels of the Nile include it; Tauck flies you there by private charter. On G’s Best of Egypt it’s an optional extra on a free day in Aswan. Ask before you compare prices.

How much should I tip on an Egypt tour?

Follow your operator’s figures. G Adventures’ Best of Egypt collects a group kitty of about $36.50 to $38.50 per person for the trip, plus a suggested $6 to $9 a day for the leader. Its Geluxe and Nat Geo Signature trips include most tips and suggest $10 to $15 a day for the leader. Trafalgar’s Best of Egypt includes porterage, restaurant and hotel tips. G adds that a 10% restaurant tip is expected.

What should I wear in mosques and temples?

Dress modestly. G Adventures advises covering your shoulders and skipping short shorts and short skirts; Tauck says to cover knees and shoulders at some monuments and that long pants may be required at some sites. Outside the big cities, and during Ramadan, dress more conservatively.
